Lifespan normative data (18-89 years) for Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices Set I.

Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) Set I is a validated and brief test of fluid intelligence, ideal for use in busy clinical settings. However, there is a dearth of normative data allowing an accurate interpretation of APM scores. To address this, we present normative data from across the adult lifespan (18-89 years) for the APM Set I. Data are presented in five age cohorts (total N= 352), including two older adult cohorts (65-79 years and 80-89 years), which allows age-standardized assessment. We also present data from a validated measure of premorbid intellectual ability, which was absent from previous standardizations of longer forms of the APM. In line with previous findings, a striking age-related decline was noted, beginning relatively early in adulthood and most marked amongst lower-scoring individuals. Older adults did not demonstrate difficulty with specific test items or make an increased proportion of specific errors. Sex was not a significant predictor of performance. The data set is of particular use in the neuropsychological assessment of older adults, given the known susceptibility of fluid intelligence to both the effects of normal ageing and acquired brain injury in older age. The results are discussed in light of theories of neurological ageing.

The Greek Australian neuropsychological normative study: tests & norms for Greek Australians aged 70-85 years

ABSTRACT Objective Access to valid and reliable neuropsychological measures for use with culturally diverse groups in Australia is limited. The aim of this study was to adapt and translate a selection of English language neuropsychological tests, employ several existing standardised Greek language tests, and provide specific reference group normative data for Greek Australian older adults. Method A convenience sample of 90 healthy older Greek Australians (M = 77.14 ± 4.46; range = 70–85), with a primary school level of education (M = 5.60 ± 0.68; Range = 4–6), was recruited throughout the Melbourne metropolitan area. Several neuropsychological measures were administered which assessed domains such as verbal and visual memory, confrontational naming, and executive functions. Results Regression modelling revealed that age, education and sex predicted between 5% and 35% of the variance of test scores, with age being the most significant predictor of performance across a majority of measures. Therefore, the normative data for all tests were stratified according to three age bands (70–74, 75–79, 80–85). Conclusions The use of culture-specific tests and norms for assessment of older Greek-Australians with limited education may facilitate accuracy of assessment findings, improve diagnostic outcomes, and reduce misclassification.

The CERAD Word List Memory Test: Normative Data Based on a Norwegian Population-Based Sample of Healthy Older Adults 70 Years and Above. The HUNT Study.

The CERAD Word List Memory Test (WLMT) is widely used in the assessment of older adults with suspected dementia. Although normative data of the WLMT exist in many different regions of the world, normative data based on large population-based cohorts from the Scandinavian countries are lacking. To develop normative data for the WLMT based on a large population-based Norwegian sample of healthy older adults aged 70 years and above, stratified by age, gender, and education. A total of 6,356 older adults from two population-based studies in Norway, HUNT4 70 + and HUNT4 Trondheim 70+, were administered the WLMT. Only persons with normal cognitive function were included. We excluded persons with a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia, and persons with a history of stroke and/or depression. This resulted in 3,951 persons aged between 70 and 90 years, of whom 56.2% were females. Regression-based normative data were developed for this sample. Age, gender, and education were significant predictors of performance on the WLMT list-learning subtests and the delayed recall subtest, i.e., participants of younger age, female sex, and higher education level attained higher scores compared to participants of older age, male sex, and lower level of education. Regression-based normative data from the WMLT, stratified by age, gender, and education from a large population-based Norwegian sample of cognitively healthy older adults aged 70 to 90 years are presented. An online norm calculator is available to facilitate scoring of the subtests (in percentiles and z-scores).

Operational Cash Flow and Return on Asset of Listed Manufacturing Firms in Kenya: A Panel Analysis

The contribution of the manufacturing sector to the Kenyan economy has, over time, portrayed a declining trend when compared to the growth of other economies and the volume of exports. The average growth in value of manufacturing exports to other countries in Africa shows Kenya ranked the last below 10%. Rwanda ranked the highest at 35%, Nigeria secured 30%, while in East Africa, Tanzania topped the list with 23%. Cash flow has posed a challenge to the listed firms in this sector. The trend analysis across the firms in the sector shows that none has a consistent cash flow raising doubt if cash is properly managed among the firms. These companies reported negative operational cash flows, reduced sales volume, extreme losses, and complications in paying suppliers. These firms reported circles of increase and decrease in cash inflows and cash outflows which later had an impact on their Return on Asset. The reviewed studies revealed mixed results and adopted different methodologies. Some revealed positive relationships, while others showed negative relationships. Locally, the majority of the studies were carried out in different sectors like Sacco and Small and Medium Enterprises using either time series data or cross-section data. In contrast, the studies on listed manufacturing companies were done in other countries. Furthermore, none of the studies reviewed has attempted to incorporate operational cash flow management and return on an asset using panel data to study listed manufacturing firms within the same study period. The study employed a correlational research design. The target population was all the 9 companies listed, out of which 8 companies were purposively sampled. The study period was seven years: 2013-2019, yielding 56 data points. The collection of secondary data was aided by data collection sheets. The test for unit root indicated order zero (p=.000) after integrating the variables. Pooled regression analysis revealed that the panel model shows a good fit with an R squared of above 85.4%. Operational cash flow is a significant predictor of performance (β=341.508), (p=0.000) meaning a unit change in operational cash flow leads to an increase in ROA of 341.508. The study concludes that operational cash flow positively affects Return on assets.

The Impact of Cognitive Impairment on Robot-Based Upper-Limb Motor Assessment in Chronic Stroke

Background Chronic upper extremity motor deficits are present in up to 65% of stroke survivors, and cognitive impairment is prevalent in 46-61% of stroke survivors even 10 years after their stroke. Robot-assisted therapy programs tend to focus on motor recovery and do not include stroke patients with cognitive impairment. Objective This study aims to investigate performance on the individual cognitive domains evaluated in the MoCA and their relation to upper-limb motor performance on a robotic system. Methods Participants were recruited from the stroke population with a wide range of cognitive and motor levels to complete a trajectory tracking task using the Haptic TheraDrive rehabilitation robot system. Motor performance was evaluated against standard clinical cognitive and motor assessments. Our hypothesis is that the cognitive domains involved in the visuomotor tracking task are significant predictors of performance on the robot-based task and that impairment in these domains results in worse motor performance on the task compared to subjects with no cognitive impairment. Results Our results support the hypothesis that visuospatial and executive function have a significant impact on motor performance, with differences emerging between different functional groups on the various robot-based metrics. We also show that the kinematic metrics from this task differentiate cognitive-motor functional groups differently. Conclusion This study demonstrates that performance on a motor-based robotic assessment task also involves a significant visuospatial and executive function component and highlights the need to account for cognitive impairment in the assessment of motor performance.

A-235 The Degree to which Age, Education and Race predict TOMM Performance in a Retired NFL Cohort

Abstract Objective: The study aimed to evaluate how performance on the TOMM was related to age, race, and level of education. Methods, 160 NFL former players (Mage= 48.9, 71% African American, 29% Caucasian) were evaluated for possible CTE. The sample consisted of 124 African American (Mage= 46.3, SD= 7.94) and 36 Whites (Mage= 43.3, SD= 8.66). Results: Age (b = .143, p = .033) and ethnicity (b = -3.740, p = .036) were significant predictor of the TOMM trial 1, F(2, 153) = 2.587, p = .079, R2 = .033 but were not significant predictors for TOMM trial 2 and 3. Independent-sample t-tests were conducted to compare participants performance on all TOMM trials between both ethnic groups. There was a significant difference in mean scores for T1 t(155) = 2.81, p = .006, d=.540, T2 t(158) = 1.762, p= .04, d= .33 and T3 t(158) = 2.187, p .015, d= .41 with African Americans performing relatively lower than Whites. Discussion: Ethnicity and age were significant predictor of performance only on TOMM trial 1. The TOMM was not resistant to the effect of ethnicity thus supporting evidence from previous studies. Differences may be due to cultural influences such as lack of prior exposure to some TOMM pictures. Moreover, consistent with the literature, there is a negative correlation between test outcome and age. Though the TOMM is a reputable measure for suboptimal effort, its content may not be appropriate for various ethnic background. Therefore, it is essential to employ culturally appropriate measures to detect insufficient effort.

Effects of Organ System Courses of the First Two Years of Medical School on the Performance of the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States (COMLEX-USA) Level 2-Cognitive Evaluation

Objectives: The Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States (COMLEX-USA) Level 2-Cognitive Evaluation (CE) is a board examination that medical students usually take in the third or fourth year of medical school. A few researchers have investigated the prediction of COMLEX Level 2-CE scores based on the performance in third-year clerkships. However, given how close the clerkships are to the board exam, this type of prediction is too late for students to have adequate time to get assistance to prepare for COMLEX Level 2-CE. We aimed to investigate the predictive value of each organ system course during the first two years in predicting COMLEX Level 2-CE performance. Our findings will help students at risk focus on important basic and clinical sciences much earlier before preparing for COMLEX Level 2-CE.Methods: Academic data from students enrolled at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2011 to 2017 were retrieved. Data included the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores, course grades in the first two years of medical school, COMLEX Level 1 scores, and COMLEX Level 2-CE scores. Pearson correlation coefficients, a multiple linear regression model, and a backward stepwise regression model were generated for analysis.Results: The highest correlation with COMLEX Level 2-CE scores was the COMLEX Level 1 score, followed by the performances in the third-semester Cardiovascular System II (CV II) and Renal System II (REN II) courses. Multiple linear regression and backward stepwise regression predictive models found that scores on third-semester CV II and Principles of Clinical Medicine III (PCM III) were the most significant predictors of performance on Level 2-CE. Both models explained 46% of the variance in COMLEX Level 2-CE scores.Conclusions: Performances in third-semester courses are the most important predictors of COMLEX Level 2-CE scores.

Slower upper extremity function in older adults with hyperkyphosis negatively impacts the 6-min walk test

BackgroundApproximately 30% to 40% of older adults have hyperkyphosis, defined as excessive curvature of the thoracic spine. Hyperkyphosis is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to determine whether hyperkyphosis (Cobb’s angle) and upper extremity tasks were independently associated with the 6-min walk test (6MWT) in community-dwelling older adults with hyperkyphosis.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, we studied 71 women and 28 men aged 60–87 from the study of hyperkyphosis, exercise, and function trial (SHEAF) who had kyphosis, 3 timed upper extremity tasks and the 6MWT assessed at their baseline visit. We used standing lateral spine radiographs and a standardized protocol for thoracic kyphosis (T4-T12) to measure Cobb angle of kyphosis. In addition, 3 activity of daily living (ADL) extremity tests (putting on and removing a laboratory coat, picking up a penny from the floor, and lifting a 7-lb. book to a shelf) were used.ResultsThe mean ± SD age was 70.1 ± 6.1 years. The mean ± SD Cobb angle of kyphosis was 57.4 ± 12.5 degrees. On average ± SD, the participants walked 504.8 ± 84.2 m in 6 min and took 2.4 ± 2.2 prescription medications. The mean ± SD height was 164.7 ± 8.5 cm, weight was 68.7 ± 13.1 kg, and BMI was 25.2 ± 4.0 kg/m2. Multivariate regression revealed that age, height, upper extremity book lift task, and the number of prescribed medications were significant predictors of performance on the 6MWT (p < 0.05).ConclusionsWhile kyphosis was not associated with the 6MWT, timed tests of upper extremity function indicated that upper body dynamics can affect walking performance. In addition, sociodemographic factors and the number of prescribed medications were significant contributing factors to the 6MWT in older adults with mild to moderate hyperkyphosis. These results illustrate multifactorial influences on physical performance and the need for an integrated and targeted approach in helping older hyperkyphotic adults maintain healthy physical functioning as they age.

Multi-institutional Analysis of Student and Program Variables as Predictors of Performance on the NAPLEX

Objective. Understanding student characteristics and risk factors for performance on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) may help schools and colleges of pharmacy target limited resources. This study aimed to evaluate two sets of Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) student variables for their effect on NAPLEX performance.Methods. Data were collected from five schools and colleges of pharmacy over three years (2016-2018). Relationships between variables were first examined with bivariate correlations, and then by a series of multiple regressions using a structural equation modeling approach. Two sets of analyses were conducted using the outcome variable of NAPLEX scaled score. The first set examined variables at admission to the program while the second set examined performance variables during the PharmD program.Results. Students' score on the Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes Assessment (PCOA) had the highest bivariate correlation with their NAPLEX score, with area 4 and area 2 having the strongest correlations. The correlations of Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) subtest scores with NAPLEX scores were significant but smaller. Admissions variables of incoming science grade point average (GPA) and PCAT area scores were significant predictors of performance on the NAPLEX, but these variables were entered in separate models as they explained the same variance (each approximately 15%). The PCOA area scores and GPA before starting advanced pharmacy practice experiences (pre-APPE GPA) were significant predictors and explained about 25% of the variance in NAPLEX scores.Conclusion Pharmacy students' PCOA area scores and pre-APPE GPA were significant predictors of their NAPLEX scores. Information in this study can be used by pharmacy schools to efficiently target support services to students for enhanced NAPLEX performance.

Relationships between Dota 2 expertise and decision-making ability.

Esports is an often time-consuming activity that has become increasingly popular with billions of players all over the world. The objective of this study was to investigate if there is a relationship between skill level in the strategy video game Dota 2, a game that places many demands on decision making to be successful, and decision making under ambiguity and experience as measured by performance in the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a task known to have ecological validity. Two indicators of players’ performance in Dota 2, namely match-making rating (MMR) and Medal, were used as predictors of performance in the IGT in path models. Results showed that Medal was a significant predictor of performance in IGT, while MMR score was borderline significant. The cognitive reflection task, included in the models as an indicator of the ability to engage in conscious, analytical, rational, and logical thinking, was a significant predictor of performance in IGT, and was significantly and positively related to MMR. The findings from this study give insight into the cognitive demands related to performance in Dota 2. Although results suggest that strategy video gaming may be a factor that contributes to increased decision making abilities, a reversed relationship is also possible, whereby individuals who are better at decision making are also more likely to become successful in Dota-2. More studies, preferably longitudinal, are needed to replicate the findings of this study and to establish the directionality between factors.

Predictors of performance of foreign-trained medical doctors in the registration examination of the Ghana medical and dental council: A 5-year analysis.

Although the influx of foreign-trained medical doctors (FTMDs) can improve the doctor-to-patient ratio in Ghana, there is the need to ensure that the quality of training is maintained. We assessed the performance of FTMDs in registration examinations over a 5-year period. Data were extracted from Ghana Medical and Dental Council (GMDC) records from 2015 to 2019. Chi-squared tests assessed the association between the selected characteristics and the final grades. A multivariate logistic regression analysis determined significant predictors of the failure. The data were analysed using the statistical software IBM SPSS (version 26). The significance level was set at P < 0.05. Of the 1356 doctors, majority (63.1%) were male, 64.3% were aged 21-30 years and 95.5% were Ghanaian. In all, there were 41 countries of training with majority training in China (35.4%) and Ukraine (31.9%). More than half (58.5%) failed the examination. Country of training, number of years from qualification to time of registration examination and number of previous attempts were statistically significantly associated with success at the examination. The logistic regression analysis showed that those who failed were more likely to have trained in Belarus (odds ratio [OR] = 3.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]; 1.50-6.82), Ukraine (OR = 2.47, 95% CI; 1.55-3.92), China OR = 2.06, 95% CI; 1.30-3.26) and Russia (OR = 1.98, 95% CI; 1.21-3.23) and were 0.58 times likely to have trained in Cuba. The performance at the examination is low. The significant predictor of performance is country of training. The authors recommend that the GMDC provides counselling services for students who leave for medical training abroad.

The seeming eternal pursuit of profit by financial institutions and other enterprises has proved to be short-sighted judging from recent studies. Emphases have shifted to securing the goose that lays the golden egg (the customer) rather than the egg itself. This study focused on the imperative of deploying evolving customer-centric platforms such as CRM to manage customer needs satisfactorily to guarantee continued patronage and profit (performance). CRM is revealed as a competitive strategy hotly becoming popular among Nigerian banks - extant literature on its dynamics was clinically x-rayed. Models of relationship management such as relational benefit, network and relational quality models were discussed about service offerings. Survey research was used in a cross-sectional study to test the nature of the association between CRM predictor variables of interactive marketing, service quality and bonding among leading banks in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. These variables were tested to ascertain whether they would become significant predictors of performance among the leading banks sampled. The outcome reveals a positive association and a strongly significant influence at 0.05%. This necessitated the rejection of all two hypotheses tested.

Cognitive and affective predictors of occupational stress and job performance: the role of perceived organizational support and work engagement

PurposeThis study aimed to (1) analyze whether the perceived organizational support (POS) was a significant predictor of performance and stress and (2) explore the mediating role of engagement in these relations.Design/methodology/approachTo test the hypotheses, the authors collected data with 200 working adults in a mandatory quarantine due to COVID-19 pandemic crisis.FindingsThe results showed that the POS contributed to increase engagement, and consequently, job performance. These relations also proved to be significant for stress, because when the POS increased, the work engagement also increased, and as a result decreased occupational stress.Research limitations/implicationsThis study relied on a cross-sectional design. Therefore, future research should consider a daily design to replicate this study and analyze daily fluctuations. Overall, the authors can conclude that work engagement is an affective process through which POS decreases stress and increases performance.Originality/valueThis study tests the mediating effect of work engagement on the link between POS, stress and performance, and its theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Standardization and normative data for a new test of visual long-term recognition memory

The assessment of recognition memory is useful in several neurological conditions, but normative data for visual recognition memory of complex figures are still missing for the Italian population. The aim of this study is to present a new short test of visual recognition memory that consists in a supplementary task to be administered after the free delayed recall trial of the Modified Taylor Complex Figure (MTCF). The MTCF-Recognition Trial (MTCF-RT) includes 10 tables, each with a sub-component of the MTCF coupled with two interfering stimuli. Participants are asked to point, for each triplet, the item that was part of the original picture. Normative data were collected from a sample of 280 healthy Italian native speakers ranging in age from 18 to 89years. The mean recognition score on the MTCF-RT was 9.125 ± 0.996. Results from multiple regression analyses showed that age and education (but not gender) were significant predictors of performance. Therefore, we provided correction grids to adjust raw scores for age and education and computed equivalent scores for the use of the MTCF-RT in the clinical assessment of recognition memory.

The prognostic validity of the formative for the summative MEQ (Modified Essay Questions).

Objective: The purpose of formative examinations is that students and lecturers receive an early feedback regarding the success of learning behavior and teaching methods. These also serve as practice for later summative exams. The aim of this paper is to investigate to what extent the result of the formative MEQ* at the end of the first semester at Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H) in the study program human medicine can be used as a predictor for the summative MEQ-1 at the end of the second semester which is part of the equivalence examination replacing the state examination. Methodology: The predictive value of the score achieved in the MEQ* on the MEQ-1 score, as well as the potential influence of the variables gender, age, high school graduation grade (German Abiturnote), professional background, and self-efficacy expectancy, was determined for students of human medicine.Results: Data from two cohorts of UW/H with a total of 88 students were included. Scores on the formative MEQ* correlate with those on the summative MEQ-1 in both cohorts. In regression analyses, only the score on the MEQ* proves to be a significant predictor of performance on the MEQ-1 (40.5% variance explanation). Particularly significant predictors are the scores in the subjects anatomy and clinical reasoning. Vocational training or pre-study only appear to contribute to higher scores in the MEQ* after the first semester, but have no further significance in predicting scores in the MEQ-1. Conclusion: The MEQ* was confirmed to be a good predictor of the MEQ-1. Thus, it serves as a formative exam to inform students about their current state of knowledge with regard to the summative exam MEQ-1, so that they can adequately adapt their learning strategies in the course of the second semester.

Exploring the effects of individual innovativeness dimensions on performance: a study with pharmaceutical managers

Background and Aims: Innovation is a crucial factor for individuals and businesses, particularly in the period of Industry 4.0. The objectives of the present study are to explore the factor structure of the Individual Innovativeness Scale (IS) in a manager sample, and then to investigate the dimensions’ impact on performance. Methods: A questionnaire was administered to managers in the pharmaceutical industry. Factor structure of the Individual Innovativeness Scale was determined via exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Afterwards, impacts of the dimensions on performance were assigned. Results: After exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, three dimensions emerged: resistance to change, openness to experience, and opinion leading. The regression model showed that opinion leading and openness to experience were significant predictors of performance. Conclusion: The IS is three dimensional in the pharmaceutical manager sample. Performance of pharmaceutical managers are affected from opinion leading and openness to experience. This paper has both theoretical and practical contributions.

Functional Connectivity Within the Fronto-Parietal Network Predicts Complex Task Performance: A fNIRS Study.

Performance in complex tasks is essential for many high risk operators. The achievement of such tasks is supported by high-level cognitive functions arguably involving functional activity and connectivity in a large ensemble of brain areas that form the fronto-parietal network. Here we aimed at determining whether the functional connectivity at rest within this network could predict performance in a complex task: the Space Fortress video game. Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) data from 32 participants were recorded during a Resting-State period, the completion of a simple version of Space Fortress (monotask) and the original version (multitask). The intrinsic functional connectivity within the fronto-parietal network (i.e., during the Resting-State) was a significant predictor of performance at Space Fortress multitask but not at its monotask version. The same pattern was observed for the functional connectivity during the task. Our overall results suggest that Resting-State functional connectivity within the fronto-parietal network could be used as an intrinsic brain marker for performance prediction of a complex task achievement, but not for simple task performance.

Assessment of Pediatric Resident Knowledge and Comfort in Addressing Childhood Obesity in Clinical Practice

Background: Recent data estimate the prevalence of pediatric obesity at 19.3%. Emphasis on primary prevention and early identification is needed to avoid development of serious medical and psychosocial sequelae. The objective of this initiative is to assess baseline knowledge and comfort among trainees at an inner-city pediatric residency program in identifying children with overweight/obesity, evaluating associated risk factors and comorbidities, and providing effective counseling. Methods: Key topics from 2 major guidelines on pediatric obesity assessment, prevention, and treatment were incorporated into the development of a resident questionnaire, which consisted of 12 knowledge-based questions and a Likert scale evaluating self-perceived knowledge and comfort on 7 skills. Results: Forty-six percent of eligible residents completed the questionnaire (n = 28). The mean score on the objective knowledge-based section was 44% ± 13%, with no differences by training year. The percentage of residents with correct responses by topic ranged from 14% to 79%. The mean self-perceived knowledge rating was 3.56 ± 0.86. The mean self-perceived comfort rating was 3.53 ± 0.89. Neither the self-perceived knowledge nor comfort rating was a significant predictor of performance on the objective knowledge-based section when controlling for postgraduate year status. Conclusions: Significant gaps in knowledge were discovered among pediatric residents with regard to appropriate screening, assessment, and counseling practices related to pediatric overweight/obesity. These deficits were not consistently reflected in residents' self-perceived knowledge and comfort ratings. The results of this initiative highlight the need for incorporation of standardized curricula on childhood overweight/obesity into pediatric resident education.

How does self-regulated learning influence formative assessment and summative grade? Comparing online and blended learners

The literature regarding formative assessment and Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) has focused on the ways in which formative assessment improves SRL. This study, on the other hand, evaluated whether SRL characteristics impact successful engagement with formative assessment, and subsequent summative performance in both online and blended learning contexts. Ninety-six blended and 85 online learners completed a formative assessment task, received feedback, and then resubmit the assessment for a summative grade. Overall, while there were differences between learning contexts, SRL, and performance, many variables were not significant predictors of performance. Online learners who were confident, managed their time well and regulated their efforts saw the greatest benefits, though these effects were small when viewed individually. Blended learners, to a lesser extent, also benefited from confidence and effort regulation. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to test SRL characteristics as drivers of performance during a formative task across two learning contexts.

Developmental Differences in the Availability of Cognitive Resources Supporting Rhyming and Dual Tasking.

Purpose We investigated developmental differences in a dual task involving rhyming and tone judgment/decisions and the effects of varying cognitive demands on task performance. Method Participants were 7- to 11-year-olds, 12- to 15-year-olds, and adults between 18 and 40 years (n = 19 per group). The rhyming task consisted of three stimuli categories (nonrhyme, rhyme, and replica), and the tone task stimuli were presented at short (100 ms) versus long (900 ms) stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) from the onset of the rhyme task to vary cognitive demands. Response time (RT) and error data were analyzed using linear and binomial mixed-methods analysis, respectively. Results and Conclusions Adults did not show an SOA-based effect in rhyming RT, while the 12- to 15-year-olds showed the most effect (RT, long > short SOA). Response to the replica category was significantly faster than for the other categories in all age groups. A reverse SOA effect was evident in the tone task (RT, short > long SOA) in all age groups. The 7- to 11-year-olds showed twice the task switch cost effect in the tone task RT. Age grouping and phoneme awareness were significant predictors of performance in both tasks, and additionally, SOA was a significant predictor of performance in the secondary task. The findings have implications for (a) understanding maturational differences in rhyming and executive control for dual tasking and the cognitive mechanisms supporting such effects and (b) identifying variables contributing to the developmental differences.
