Chondrosarcoma in Japan: an analytic study using population-based National Cancer Registry.

Chondrosarcoma (CS) is a rare malignant bone tumor exhibiting diverse histological features and clinical behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics, clinical features, prognostic factors, and subtype-specific differences of CS in Japan using National Cancer Registry data. We analyzed data from CS cases diagnosed between 2016 and 2019, calculating age-adjusted incidence, estimating overall survival, and identifying prognostic factors through multivariate analysis. The study identified 1015 CS cases with an age-adjusted incidence of 0.159 per 100 000 population and a mean overall survival of 1205.2days. Multivariate analysis revealed that female sex, younger age (15-39years), histological subtypes other than dedifferentiated CS, localized disease, and surgical treatment were associated with better prognoses. Conversely, male sex, older age (≥75years), dedifferentiated subtype, advanced stage, and non-surgical treatment were linked to a higher risk of death. Significant differences in sex distribution, age at diagnosis, tumor location, disease stage, and tumor differentiation were observed among CS subtypes. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights into CS epidemiology, prognostic factors, and subtype-specific characteristics in Japan. The identification of high-risk groups emphasizes the need for improved therapeutic strategies and supportive care. The observed heterogeneity among CS subtypes underscores the importance of individualized management approaches in treating this complex malignancy.

Comparing outcomes for early and late drainage of malignant ascites.

842 Background: Malignant ascites (MA) is a common sequela of peritoneal carcinomatosis resulting in significant morbidity and poses substantial management challenges for clinicians. Large volume paracentesis remains the gold standard treatment. The impact of time to drainage of MA is poorly studied. The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes of hospitalized patients with MA that had drainage performed within 48 hours of admission and after 48 hours of admission. Methods: The NIS was queried between the years 2016 and 2020 to identify all adult patients hospitalized with malignant ascites (ICD-10 code R18.0) and had a drainage procedure performed (ICD-10 Procedure code 0W9Gx). These patients were then stratified into an early cohort (<48 hours after admission) and late cohort (>48 hours after admission). Baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes were collected and analyzed using chi squared tests, independent sample t-tests, and binary logistic regression (adjusted for age, gender, and Charlson comorbidity index or CCI). Adjusted Odds ratios (aOR) are presented with 95% Confidence intervals (CI). Results: A total of 129,040 patients were analyzed, with 89,905 (69.7%) hospitalizations in the early cohort and 39,135 (30.3%) in the late cohort. Baseline characteristics were similar between the groups, with no significant differences in age (63.8 vs 63.6, p = .06) or gender distribution (63.6% vs 63.1%, p = .09). However, patients in the early paracentesis group exhibited a lower CCI (9.8 vs 10.2, p<.001). Notably, early paracentesis was associated with significantly improved outcomes, including lower mortality (aOR 0.67, 95% CI 0.64–0.69), reduced incidence of sepsis (aOR 0.67, 95% CI 0.65–0.69), decreased need for transfusions (aOR 0.69, 95% CI 0.66–0.71), lower rates of mechanical ventilation (aOR 0.44, 95% CI 0.42–0.47) and vasopressor use (aOR 0.79, 95% CI 0.73–0.87). Conclusions: Early paracentesis in patients with malignant ascites was found to be associated with significantly improved clinical outcomes, independent of comorbidity burden. These findings underscore the importance of timely intervention to mitigate complications and enhance quality of life. Systematic identification of factors influencing the spatial distribution of soil organic matter in croplands within the black soil region of Northeastern China across multiple scales

Cultivated soil organic matter (SOM) plays a critical role in maintaining soil health and promoting ecosystem services. However, the multi-scale influences on SOM changes in cropland and their interactions in the Black Soil Region of Northeastern China (BSR-NEC) remain unclear. Existing studies mainly focus on a single scale and lack a systematic multi-scale analysis. In this study, we systematically examined the multi-scale influences on SOM spatial variation in cropland within BSR-NEC using spatial autocorrelation analysis (SA), random forest models (RF), geodetector (GD), and structural equation modeling (SEM). We integrated multi-scale SOM spatial distribution influences across grid scale (GS), watershed scale (WS), and prefecture level city scale (PLS) to unveil significant differences in the spatial distribution of SOM in cropland across regions in BSR-NEC. The research indicated that: (1) the proportion of cropland with SOM content greater than 30 g/kg in BSR-NEC was 68.31 %, where the spatial distribution of SOM was more uniform at the watershed scale; (2) the Moran indices of the spatial distribution of SOM content all indicated that cropland SOM showed a trend of spatial concentration, with the grid scale (GS) > watershed scale (WS) > prefecture level city scale (PLS), mainly manifested in the form of “high-high (HH)” and “low-low (LL)” aggregation types; (3) at multiple scales, temperature and cropland type are always the main factors driving the changes of cropland SOM in BSR-NEC; (4) factors such as precipitation, elevation, and distance from urban centers exhibited varying impacts on SOM; moreover, interactions between any two factors typically resulted in nonlinear enhancements. By developing region-specific management strategies that target these key factors, our findings contribute to advancing precision and efficiency in cropland protection, aligning with the goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG2030) to promote sustainable land use, improve soil health, and enhance ecosystem resilience.

Retrospective, descriptive study of acute myelitis in French Guyana.

Acute myelitis is a neurological entity, often posing the problem of etiology. The two main causes are infectious or autoimmune. French Guyana is a region of the world where infectious etiologies are multiple, in particular human immunodeficiency virus infection, and autoimmune diseases appear to be emerging. The aim of our study was firstly to determine the proportion of each etiology of acute myelitis in French Guyana, and secondly to describe the clinical, paraclinical and epidemiological characteristics of autoimmune myelitis in French Guyana, with particular reference to neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). This retrospective, observational study included all patients who presented with acute myelitis between January 2015 and August 2023 at Cayenne Hospital Center. Each patient's chart was reviewed and patients were classified according to etiology. Demographic and clinical data were collected, as well as blood, lumbar puncture, and cerebral and spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging results. Of the 40 patients included, immune etiology was found in 74%, including 49% with NMOSD (37% with positive anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies) compared with three patients with infectious etiology. There was no statistically significant difference in complementary examinations between immune and infectious etiologies. The prevalence of NMOSD in French Guyana was estimated at 8/100,000 (6/100,000 for patients with positive anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies). No significant difference in the geographic distribution of patients with NMOSD in French Guyana was demonstrated. Our results show a high proportion of autoimmune etiology of acute myelitis in French Guyana, and more particularly of NMOSD. There is a high prevalence of NMOSD, the second highest in the world after the French West Indies. Given this high proportion of autoimmune myelitis, several hypotheses can be put forward, with genetic and environmental factors in the foreground. For patients with acute myelitis in French Guyana, an immune cause is the most likely. It is therefore important to think about this and look for NMOSD in particular, without ignoring an infectious etiology.

P-1187. Comparative Evaluation of Clinical Characteristics in Pediatric Patients Hospitalized in Taiwan with RSV and hMPV Infections

Abstract Background Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) are prevalent pathogens responsible for respiratory tract infections in infants and young children. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the clinical presentations and outcomes among hospitalized infants and young children with RSV and hMPV infections. Methods This retrospective observational study was conducted at China Medical University Children's Hospital (CMUCH) from January 2020 to December 2021. The study enrolled patients under 5 years old admitted due to respiratory tract infections, with RSV or hMPV detection confirmed using a commercial respiratory panel employing real-time polymerase chain reaction. Demographic details, clinical manifestations, and outcomes were gathered and analyzed to facilitate comparative assessments. Results A total of 145 pediatric patients were included in the study. Among them, 82 patients tested positive for RSV, while 63 patients tested positive for hMPV. There were no significant differences in age and gender distribution between the two groups. Common symptoms such as fever, cough, and rhinorrhea were observed in both groups without notable disparities. No significant differences were found in laboratory parameters between the groups. Pneumonia patches were more frequently observed in the hMPV group and less frequently observed in the RSV group (28.3% vs. 8.3%, p=0.001). Medical interventions did not significantly differ between the two groups. However, the hMPV group exhibited a notably higher rate of antibiotic usage compared to the RSV group (90.5% vs. 57.3%, p<0.001). Moreover, there were no significant discrepancies in the duration of hospitalization (5 vs. 5 days, p=0.110), requirement for oxygen (36.6% vs. 25.4%, p=0.151), and admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) (14.6% vs. 9.5%, p=0.355) between the two groups. Only one RSV patient required intubation, and there were no reported fatalities in either group during the study period. Conclusion The findings indicate that RSV and hMPV infections have similar clinical presentations, highlighting diagnostic challenges in the absence of molecular methods. P-300. Antimicrobial Resistance Focus in French ICU: A national surveillance network analysis on Pseudomonas aeruginosa nosocomial infections

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive description on a cohort of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infected patients in ICU, comparing their characteristics between susceptible and resistant strains, to understand the impact of resistance on clinical decisions and to characterize patients at risk of MDR. Site of infection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Methods Adult patients hospitalized in France for at least 48 hours in ICU participating to REA-REZO surveillance between 2018 and 2021 were included in the data base used to create this cohort. Resistance patterns of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Results 4196 patients with nosocomial Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections were included in this cohort. Most infections were identified in patients with pneumonia, with a consistently high prevalence ranging from 71.5% to 74.5% depending on the year. Among the Pseudomonas, 1734 (31.0%) were resistant to piperacillin/tazobactam, 1331 (23.8%) were resistant to ceftazidime, and 1191 (21.3%) were carbapenem resistant. A statistically significant difference (p< 0.001) in resistance patterns between the first and subsequent infections is seen, notably for resistance to carbapenems which rose markedly from initial to subsequent infections, from 16.3% to 27.8% (p< 0.001). Regarding occurrence of resistant Pseudomonas strains, statistically significant differences in age distribution among the resistance groups are noted (p< 0.001), particularly evident in patients under 55, where 24.0% of those with dual resistance are under this age threshold, compared to 19.7% with no resistance. The SAPS II score was higher among resistant strains, as well as the duration in ICU stay, suggesting more challenging infections. Description of the patient with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections Conclusion These results reaffirm the critical challenge posed by resistant Pseudomonas in the ICU. It highlights the need for comprehensive antibiotic strategies that address the clinical, psychological, and economic dimensions of this issue. Harvesting Underdevelopment: Exploring the Water–Food Nexus in Brazilian Municipalities

Efforts to promote human development through agriculture highlight issues that require balanced approaches, considering socio-environmental factors, including equitable water allocation in regions with significant inequalities. This study aims to assess human development disparities across Brazilian regions, particularly in municipalities with high water consumption for irrigation in agriculture and livestock watering. Using public data from 2007 and 2016, a total of 300 municipalities were selected each year for analysis based on water use types. The study compared groups using the Firjan Index of Municipal Development (FIMD) as a measure of human development, employing the Kruskal–Wallis test with a 95% confidence level. We found statistically significant differences in FIMD distribution across all of the groups studied. We also verified that a set of municipalities in the Southeast did not experience significant advancements in development between 2007 and 2016, despite having high water allocations for livestock watering. Additionally, intense water use for irrigation was insufficient to elevate less advantaged regions, such as the Northeast, where half of the municipalities were classified with moderately low values in both years. The challenges in this water–food nexus study highlight the need for more integrated policies to ensure greater justice in human development and in the distribution of natural resource exploitation for agribusiness income.

Spatiotemporal distribution patterns of cephalopods and their responses to changes in the marine environment in the coastal waters of Zhejiang, China

IntroductionLike pelagic fishes, cephalopods represent fishery resources with high worldwide potential and an important evolutionary node animal group. Thus, exploring the spatial and seasonal variations in cephalopod distribution and their associations with environmental factors is important for elucidating cephalopod diversity and the distribution of cephalopods under changing environmental conditions and for developing reasonable resource management and conservation measures.MethodsOn the basis of trawl survey data from 123 stations in the coastal waters of Zhejiang, China, in the spring and autumn of 2021, the relationships among the cephalopod species composition and diversity characteristics and the spatial and seasonal changes and environmental factors were investigated via the relative importance index (IRI), the alpha diversity index, and the GAM.ResultsThe results revealed that the cephalopods in the coastal waters of Zhejiang belonged to three orders, six families, and 10 genera and that the dominant species were gradually replaced by species of minor economic importance and endemic small-scale fishery species. In spring, Uroteuthis duvaucelii was the dominant species, the resource density in the southern coastal waters of Zhejiang was relatively high, and the overall distribution increased from northeast to southwest. In autumn, U. duvaucelii and Abralia multihamata were the dominant species, and the coastal waters of Zhejiang presented two high-density distribution areas in the northern and central waters, with lower resource density in the southern waters. Analysis of the alpha diversity index revealed relatively low cephalopod community diversity, with significant differences in spatial and seasonal distributions. The GAM revealed that, in spring, surface dissolved oxygen and sea bottom temperature led to significant changes in cephalopod resource density (p<0.05), and water depth significantly affected cephalopod resource density (p<0.01); in autumn, only water depth significantly affected cephalopod resource density (p<0.01).DiscussionThe cephalopod resources in the coastal waters of Zhejiang are under the dual stresses of fishing and environmental changes. The protection and restoration of traditional economic cephalopod resources are needed to ensure their sustainable development and utilization.

A comparative study on the diagnostic value of 18F-PSMA PET/CT PRIMARY score and PSMA expression score for clinically significant prostate cancer

Objective: To compare the diagnostic value of fluorine 18-labelled prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT PRIMARY score and PSMA expression score for clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa). Methods: The data of 70 patients with prostate cancer who underwent radical prostatectomy at Beijing Hospital from February 1, 2019 to February 29, 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent whole body 18F-PSMA PET/CT examination before surgery and pathological large sections of prostate specimens were made after surgery. According to the pathological section results, the lesions were divided into csPCa group (Gleason scores≥7) and non-csPCa group (Gleason scores=6 or benign). The PRIMARY score and PSMA expression score were used to evaluate prostatic lesions on PSMA PET/CT images, respectively. The differences in PRIMARY score, PSMA expression score, maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), lesion-to-background ratios (LBR), PSMA uptake characteristics, and location distribution were compared between csPCa group and non-csPCa group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the correlation factors for the incidence of csPCa. By plotting the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve and calculating the area under the curve (AUC), the optimal diagnostic threshold for csPCa of each factor was determined. The differences in AUC were compared using the Delong test. Quantitative data was represented as M (Q1, Q3). Results: The 70 patients aged 70 (64, 75) years with a total of 108 lesions, including 83 lesions (76.9%) in the csPCa group and 25 lesions (23.1%) in the non-csPCa group. There were differences between csPCa group and non-csPCa group in PRIMARY score [4 (3, 5) vs 2 (1, 4)], PSMA expression score [2 (2, 2) vs 1 (1, 2)], SUVmax [9.10 (5.70, 15.80) vs 5.40 (3.35, 6.90)], LBR [2.86 (2.09, 4.53) vs 1.96 (1.42, 2.58)], and proportion of focal uptake patterns [74.7% (62/83) vs 32.0% (8/25)] (all P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the location distribution between the two groups (P>0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated the higher the PRIMARY score, the higher the risk of developing csPCa (OR=1.863, 95%CI: 1.360-2.552). ROC curves revealed that the AUCs of the PRIMARY score and PSMA expression score for csPCa were 0.751 (95%CI: 0.659-0.829) and 0.697 (95%CI: 0.601-0.781), respectively, without statistically difference (Z=1.438, P>0.05). The cut-off values for diagnosing csPCa were 3 score for PRIMARY score and 2 score for PSMA expression score, respectively. Conclusions: The higher the 18F-PSMA PET/CT PRIMARY score, the higher the risk of developing csPCa. The PRIMARY score has good diagnostic efficacy for csPCa.

Laser-Sintered versus Conventional Cobalt-Chromium Bars in Implant-Supported Complete Mandibular Overdentures: An In Vitro Strain Analysis Comparative Study

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to compare the effect of laser-sintered and conventional cobalt-chromium bars on strain distribution around implants in mandibular implant-supported overdentures. Materials and Methods A three-dimensional (3D) epoxy resin model for completely edentulous mandible was used for this study. Two implants were placed in the canine region, and the 3D model was scanned by a laboratory scanner. Twelve cobalt-chromium bars were divided into two groups. Group 1 includes six bars that were designed by software and created using the laser sintering method. Group 2 includes six bars that were made using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing to make a wax model, fabricated by a conventional lost wax-casting technique. Each implant was surrounded by four channels in the epoxy resin model, and four strain gauges were cemented. A universal testing machine was used to apply the load, and a strain measuring analysis was performed. Results Null hypothesis was rejected as there was significant difference in strain distribution around implants between both groups for the microstrains around the implants in bar-retained implant-supported prostheses, in both bilateral and unilateral results. Conclusion The laser sintering method showed better results in comparison with conventional methods in fabrication of bar-retained implant-supported prostheses due to less trauma to the implant and supporting structures.

Impact of particulate matter exposure on melanoma risk: A multicentre case-control study.

The relationship between particulate matter (PM) exposure and melanoma risk remains largely unexplored. This study aims to investigate the association between PM10 and PM2.5 long-term exposure and melanoma risk. Case-control study involving 2575 participants, comprising 1473 melanoma patients and 1102 healthy controls attending Departments of Dermatology of University Hospital in North and Central Italy. Demographic data, smoking status, history of sunburns and skin type were collected. PM10 and PM2.5 exposure levels were estimated for each participant's residential address using a Bayesian hierarchical model, providing daily concentrations at a 1 km2 spatial resolution from 2013 to 2021. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between PM exposure and melanoma risk, adjusting for potential confounders. Melanoma patients and controls were 52% males and had a mean age of 63.89 and 61.66 years, respectively. The majority of melanoma patients had Fitzpatrick phototypes 2 (59%) and 3 (36%). There were no significant differences in the geographical distribution of cases and controls based on ZIP codes (p = 0.894). The average melanoma Breslow thickness was 1.01 mm, with 68.15% of cases diagnosed at stage 0 and IA. The multivariate logistic regression revealed a protective effect for higher PM10 (OR = 0.89, 95%CI: 0.86-0.92, p < 0.001) and PM2.5 levels (OR = 0.72, 95%CI: 0.68-0.76, p < 0.001). Darker skin phototypes (Fitzpatrick 4) and cigarette smoking were also associated with a reduced risk of melanoma. Higher levels of PM10 and PM2.5 may have a protective effect against melanoma, potentially due to the reduction in ultraviolet radiation exposure. Further research to understand the complex interactions between environmental factors and melanoma risk are needed.

Gender Disparities and Lung Cancer Screening Outcomes Among Individuals Who Have Never Smoked

Lung cancer in individuals who have never smoked (INS) is a growing global concern, with a rapidly increasing incidence and proportion among all lung cancer cases. Particularly in East Asia, opportunistic lung cancer screening (LCS) programs targeting INS have gained popularity. However, the sex-specific outcomes and drawbacks of screening INS remain unexplored, with data predominantly focused on women. To compare LCS outcomes between Asian women and men with no smoking history. This multicenter cohort study was conducted at health checkup centers in South Korea from 2009 to 2021. Participants included individuals aged 50 to 80 years with no smoking history who underwent low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening. Data were retrospectively analyzed from November 2023 to June 2024. Opportunistic LDCT screening for lung cancer. Participants were followed up until December 2022 for the outcome of death. Lung cancer diagnosis, diagnostic characteristics, clinical course, and lung cancer-specific deaths (LCSD) were compared between women and men. A total of 21 062 participants (16 133 [76.6%] women and 4929 [23.4%] men) with a mean (SD) age of 59.8 (7.2) years were included. From baseline screening, 176 participants (139 women [0.9%] and 37 men [0.8%]) were diagnosed with lung cancer (screen-detected); 131 of 139 women (94.3%) and 33 of 37 men (89.2%) were diagnosed with stage 0 to I disease, with 133 of 139 women (95.7%) and 36 of 37 men (97.3%) having adenocarcinoma. There were no significant sex-based differences in stage or histologic type distribution. Among the 21 062 screened individuals, LCSD was reported in 8 women and 3 men during a mean (SD) follow-up of 83.8 (41.7) months. Multivariable analyses found no significant association between sex and cumulative hazards of lung cancer diagnosis (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.90 [95% CI, 0.64-1.26] for men vs women) or LCSD (aHR, 1.06 [95% CI, 0.28-4.00] for men vs women). The estimated 5-year lung cancer-specific survival rate was 97.7% for women and 100% for men with screen-detected lung cancer, showing no significant sex differences. In this cohort study of Asian individuals with no smoking history who underwent LDCT screening, no significant sex-based differences were detected in lung cancer diagnosis, stage distribution, or LCSD. These findings suggest that men and women who have never smoked would experience similar risks of overdiagnosis with little to no benefit when exposed to indiscriminate screening.

Assessing Variability in Children's Exposure to Contaminants in Food: A Longitudinal Non-Targeted Analysis Study in Miami, Florida.

Food is essential for human survival; however, food can be an important route of exposure to contaminants. This study investigated the presence and distribution of anthropogenic contaminants in food consumed by families with small children in South Florida, United States, evaluating seasonal and socio-economic variabilities in chemical composition. QuEChERS protocols, followed by non-targeted analysis (NTA) using an LC-Orbitrap HRMS system, were used for the comprehensive screening of organic contaminants. The compounds were annotated and identified with the Compound Discoverer (CD) software, and contaminant distributions were analyzed using boxplots and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The results showed significant seasonal and socio-economic differences in contaminant distributions (p < 0.05). In the wet season, a predominance of polymers and surfactants, such as dodecanedioic acid and N-dodecylacrylamide, were found in food, which might be due to increased transport of industrial pollutants during increased precipitation, while plasticizers (e.g., bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) and drugs (e.g., warfarin) were more prevalent during the dry season, which could be related to less dilution effects in this period. A higher abundance of 1-nitrosopiperidine, present in cured meats, was noted in food from upper socio-economic classes, while the lower class showed higher abundance of benzocaine, a common topical anesthetic.

Clinical characteristics and risk factors of severe pneumonia caused by human bocavirus in children

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of severe pneumonia caused by human bocavirus (HBoV) infection to explore the associated risk factors.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective review of data from children hospitalized with HBoV pneumonia. Based on the severity of pneumonia, patients were categorized into severe pneumonia and non-severe pneumonia groups. Clinical manifestations, laboratory examination results, chest imaging and pathogens were analyzed. Logistic regression was employed to identify the risk factors for severe HBoV pneumonia.ResultsA total of 334 patients were admitted, with 44 (13.17%) patients diagnosed with severe pneumonia and 290 (86.83%) with non-severe pneumonia. There were no significant differences in age distribution, presence of fever, lung moist rales, pleural effusion and reduced breath sounds between the two groups (all P > 0.05). 57.19% of the HBoV-positive children co-infected with other pathogens and HRV was the most common co-infected pathogens with HBoV. No significant differences were observed in the rate of co-infection between the two groups (χ2 = 0.50, p = 0.48). The univariate analysis revealed significant differences between the severe pneumonia group and the non-severe group in terms of gender distribution, presence of underlying chronic diseases, wheezing, premature delivery, lung wheezing rales, pneumothorax, bronchoscopy procedures, length of hospital stay, duration of symptoms prior to admission, neutrophil count, CRP levels, CKMB levels, IgA levels, CD3+(%), CD3+CD4+(%), CD3+CD8+%, and CD3−CD19+% (all P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified female gender, wheezing and neutrophil count were independent risk factors and the ratio of CD3+CD4+ cells was protective factor for severe HBoV pneumonia. The cut-off values of neutrophil count and the ratio of CD3+CD4+ cells were 6.81 × 109/L and 32.48 respectively.ConclusionOur study indicated that female gender, wheezing and neutrophil count greater than 6.81 × 109/L were independent risk factors and the ratio of CD3+CD4+ cells greater than 32.48 was protective factor for severe HBoV pneumonia.

A Multi-Source Domain Adaptation Method for Bearing Fault Diagnosis with Dynamically Similarity Guidance on Incomplete Data

In actual industrial scenarios, collecting a complete dataset with all fault categories under the same conditions is challenging, leading to a loss in fault category knowledge in single-source domains. Deep learning domain adaptation methods face difficulties in multi-source scenarios due to insufficient labeled data and significant distribution differences, hindering domain-specific knowledge transfer and reducing fault diagnosis efficiency. To address these issues, the Dynamic Similarity-guided Multi-source Domain Adaptation Network (DS-MDAN) is proposed. This method leverages incomplete data from multiple-source domains to address distribution disparities in deep domain adaptation. It enhances diagnostic performance in the target domain by transferring knowledge across diverse domains. DS-MDAN uses convolution kernels of different scales to extract multi-scale feature information and achieves feature fusion through upsampling and operations like addition and concatenation. Adversarial training with domain and fault classifiers optimizes feature extraction for widely applicable representations. The similarity between source and target domain data is calculated based on features extracted by a shared-weight network, dynamically adjusting the contribution of different source domain data to minimize distribution differences. Finally, matched source and target domain samples are mapped to the same feature space for fault diagnosis. Experimental validation on various bearing fault datasets shows that DS-MDAN improves performance in multiple fault diagnosis tasks, increasing accuracy and demonstrating good generalization capabilities.

Loss of Myostatin Affects m6A Modification but Not Semen Characteristics in Bull Spermatozoa.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification is a key methylation modification involved in reproductive processes. Myostatin gene editing (MT) in cattle is known to enhance muscle mass and productivity. However, the changes in m6A modification in MT bull sperm remain poorly understood. In the MT and wild-type (WT) groups, we identified 25,542 and 22,253 m6A peaks, respectively, mainly concentrated in the coding sequence (CDS) and 3' untranslated region (UTR) of genes. The MT group showed an increase in gene transcription, but there was no significant difference in the overall m6A peaks pattern. There was also no significant difference in m6A motif and chromosome distribution between MT and WT groups. Most genes had less m6A modification sites. A total of 1120 m6A peaks were significantly different, corresponding to 1053 differentially m6A-methylated genes (DMMGs). These DMMGs are mainly associated with G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathways and the overall composition of the cell membrane. Furthermore, an MCL clustering analysis of 111 differentially m6A-methylated and expressed genes identified seven key genes (RHOA, DAAM1, EXOC4, GNA12, PRICKLE1, SCN1A, and STXBP5L), with the cytoskeleton and migration-related gene, RHOA, being the most important gene located at the center of the gene network. However, the analysis of sperm morphology and motility indicated no significant changes in semen volume, sperm count, sperm viability, plasma membrane integrity, acrosome membrane integrity, or mitochondrial membrane integrity. This study provides a map of m6A methylation in spermatozoa from MT and WT bulls, identifies key differential m6A genes that are affected by the myostatin gene but do not affect sperm morphology and viability in MT bulls, and provides a theoretical basis for the breeding quality of MT bulls.

Antibiotic Resistance Genes and Microbiota in Brassica oleracea var. acephala Cultivated in South Korea: Potential for Resistance Transmission.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a critical global public health challenge. This study investigates the microbiome of Brassica oleracea var. acephala (kale) to evaluate the role of food production systems, particularly plant-derived foods, in AMR dissemination. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomic shotgun sequencing, we analyzed microbial diversity and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in kale samples. Results showed significant regional differences in microbiota composition and ARG distribution, with traditional fertilizer use linked to higher ARG prevalence in coliform bacteria compared to farms using other fertilization methods. Additionally, we confirmed ARG transfer potential by Klebsiella pneumoniae within coliform populations. Storage conditions notably affected microbial dynamics, with higher temperatures promoting K. pneumoniae growth in washed samples. These findings revealed the importance of AMR research in plant-derived foods and highlight the need for improved agricultural practices to mitigate the risks associated with high ARG abundance in coliform bacteria.

Distribution Characteristic and Environment Response of DOM in Different Regions of Northern City

To explore the source information and composition characteristics of dissolved organic matter （DOM） in different regions of water bodies in northern cities, considering the urban water system of Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province as an example, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy （UV-vis） and three-dimensional fluorescence parallel factor analysis （EEM-PARAFAC） were used to explain the optical parameters, abundance, and proportion of different components of DOM in water bodies of different regions. The results showed that： ① The concentrations of NO3--N, NO2--N, NH4+-N, TN, TP, and COD in the upstream were significantly lower than those in urban water bodies and downstream （P&lt;0.01）, and TSIM increased after the water entered the city. ② The ultraviolet parameter a254 indicated that the concentration of DOM significantly increased after entering the city （P&lt;0.001）. E2/E3 showed that the relative molecular weight of DOM in different regions was： upstream&lt;urban water&lt;downstream, and the SR of DOM in different regions was &gt;1, indicating that the main source of DOM was endogenous input. ③ Three fluorescent components were identified, namely C1 （visible light region fulvic acid）, C2 （tryptophan）, and C3 （long wave humic substance）. The upstream and urban water bodies were mainly composed of protein-like components （C2）, while the downstream humic substances （C1+C3） accounted for a relatively high proportion （80.1%）. The PCA analysis showed significant spatial distribution differences. According to the results, SR&gt;1, FI&gt;1.8, and HIX&lt;4 indicated that DOM exhibited low humification and strong autogenesis in different regions. ④ A significant correlation （P&lt;0.01） was observed between C1 and C3 in the upstream and downstream. C1, C2, and C3 in urban water bodies were all significantly correlated （P&lt;0.01）. In addition, C1 and C3 posed a significant correlation with NO3--N in different regional water bodies. RDA indicated that NO2--N, TDN, TDP, and COD were the main environmental driving factors for DOM distributions. In summary, the multiple pressures of the city exhibited a significant influence on the spectral properties of DOM in the flowing water system.

Evaluation of ACE I/D and ATIR A1166C variants in patients with diabetes mellitus with and without peripheral neuropathy in Turkish patients

Objective Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) can lead to long-term vascular complications such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). This study aimed to investigate the role of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion (I)/deletion (D) and angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) A1166C variants in the predisposition to T2DM in the Turkish population and their association with DPN. Methods The study included 90 T2DM patients (42 with DPN) and 50 healthy individuals. ACE I/D and ATIR A1166C gene regions were analyzed for the variant. Both the general genotype distribution of these variants and the observed genotype ratios were examined separately. Results In the T2DM group, the proportion of individuals with the AA genotype of the AT1R A1166C variant was lower than in the control group, and the proportion of individuals with the AC genotype was higher. There was no significant difference in the genotype distribution between the groups for the ACE I/D variant. There was no significant difference in the genotype distribution of the ACE I/D and ATIR A1166C variants in patients with and without DPN. Conclusion In the Turkish population, no significant difference was observed in the overall genotype distribution of ACE I/D and AT1R A1166C variants between T2DM patients and healthy individuals, whereas the AC genotype of the AT1R A1166C variant was more frequent in T2DM patients, and the AA genotype was less frequent. For both variants, no significant difference was observed in the genotype distribution between T2DM patients with and without DPN.

Characterization of Photo-Cross-Linked Polyethylene Pipes for Geothermal Energy Storage.

This study investigates the morphology and thermo-mechanical properties of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes for potential use in high-temperature borehole thermal energy storage systems. Particular attention is given to a novel type of PEX pipe produced through photoinitiated cross-linking (PEX-e). Two formulations, PEX-e1 and PEX-e2, were analyzed and compared to peroxide-cross-linked polyethylene (PEX-a) and non-cross-linked bimodal polyethylene (PE100) pipes. The degree of cross-linking was evaluated via gel content, while cross-link density and molecular weight between cross-links were determined using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Phase composition and molecular mobility were explored through 1H static nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and the melting and crystallization behavior was assessed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Oxidative stability and degradation were examined by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, oxidation induction time (OIT) measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Both PEX-e formulations achieved satisfactory cross-linking degrees and exhibited remarkable OIT values. However, significant differences in cross-link distribution were noted, with PEX-e2 showing a less uniform dispersion of cross-links, which resulted in a lower storage modulus. FTIR analysis indicated that oxidation products were formed in PEX-e1 during cross-linking, highlighting the need for further optimization of the formulation and processing conditions.
