Comparing the Balance, Strength, and Range of Motion of Hip and Ankle Joints in Volleyball Players With and Without Dynamic Knee Valgus

Background and Aims Dynamic knee valgus (DKV) is an abnormal pattern of movement or abnormal alignment of the lower limb that causes changes in lower limb function in the frontal plane and absorption of excessive reaction force by the knee ligaments during sports activities, which can increase the risk of anterior cruciate ligament injury. This study aims to compare the balance, strength, and range of motion (ROM) of hip and ankle joints in volleyball players with and without DKV. Methods This is a quasi-experimental and causal-comparative study. Participants were 60 volleyball players (30 with DKV and 30 without DKV). The tuck jump test was used to evaluate their DKV. The ROM of knee and ankle joints was measured using a goniometer, while the isometric strength of the hip and ankle muscles was determined using a hand dynamometer. Then static and dynamic balances were evaluated by the Stork test and the Y balance test, respectively. Independent t-test was used to compare the means of variables between the two groups in SPSS software, version 24. Results The results showed a significant difference in static balance (P=0.005), dynamic balance (P≤0.05), hip abduction strength (P=0.03), hip external rotation strength (P=0.01), and ROM of ankle dorsiflexion (P=0.03) between the two groups, where those without DKV performed better. The difference in other variables was not significant between the two groups. Conclusion The results indicate the importance of improving hip abduction and hip external rotation strength as well as the ROM of ankle dorsiflexion for reducing the DKV, which should be considered in designing training protocols.

Investigation of The Pain and Muscle Strength of Individuals with Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction and Its Effect on Postural Stability

ABSTRACT
 Sacroiliac joint dysfunction(sijd) is created by repetitive stresses and is ligaments and muscles cause compressive and elastic forces [1].Muscles ligaments and joints are mechanoreceptors and retains stability and bearings of the body movements sense proprioception. [9].However there is a little research investigating the relationship between sijd and balance.
 
 Aim: To investigate the relationship between sijd and static/dynamic balance.
 
 Methods: 20 subjects with sijd and 20subjects without SIJ dysfunction(control group-CG)were evaluated by standing flexion,sitting flexion and Gillet's Test.In addition to sociodemographic features, visual analog scale(VAS) was used for pain assessment.Manuel Muscle Testing (MMT) was used for assessing strength of rectus abdominis and lumbar extensors.Static balance was evaluated by single leg stance test (SLST) with open and closed eyes.Dynamic balance was evaluated by Prokin PK200.

Effects of intervention combining transcranial direct current stimulation and foot core exercise on sensorimotor function in foot and static balance

ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine the effects of combining transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and foot core exercise (FCE) on the sensorimotor function of the foot (i.e., toe flexor strength and passive ankle kinesthesia) and static balance.MethodsIn this double-blinded and randomized study, 30 participants were randomly assigned into two groups: tDCS combined with FCE and sham combined with FCE (i.e., control group). The participants received 2 mA stimulation for 20 min concurrently with FCE over 4 weeks (i.e., three sessions per week). After the first two groups completed the intervention, a reference group (FCE-only group) was included to further explore the placebo effects of sham by comparing it with the control group. Foot muscle strength, passive ankle kinesthesia, and static balance were assessed at baseline and after the intervention.ResultsCompared with the control group and baseline, tDCS combined with FCE could increase toe flexor strength (p < 0.001) and decrease the passive kinesthesia threshold of ankle eversion (p = 0.002). No significant differences in static balance were observed between tDCS + FCE and control groups. The linear regression models showed an association towards significance between the percent changes in metatarsophalangeal joint flexor strength and the anteroposterior average sway velocity of the center of gravity in one-leg standing with eyes closed following tDCS + FCE (r2 = 0.286; p = 0.057). The exploratory analysis also showed that compared with FCE alone, the sham stimulation did not induce any placebo effects during FCE.ConclusionParticipating in 4 weeks of intervention using tDCS in combination with FCE effectively enhances toe flexor strength and foot–ankle sensory function.

The purpose of this research is to analyze how proprioception training affects the balance ability of Taekwondo Poomsae players. The participants were 20 Taekwondo poomsae players. Athletes were randomly assigned to a Taekwondo Poomsae training group or a group that combined Taekwondo Poomsae training and proprioception training. For the study, it was checked the balance ability before the study and after 8 weeks. The data were analyzed using Two-way ANOVA, and the statistical significance level was set to α=.05. The study showed that there were significant difference in static balance, and the dynamic balance.BR Proprioception training had a positive impact on the players of Taekwondo Poomsae. Various sports programs should be continuously developed in consideration of the characteristics of Taekwondo Poomsae players.

The Effect of Core Muscle Strengthening Exercise Using Unstable Support Surface on the Balance Ability and Shooting Score of Shooting Athletes

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of core muscle strengthening training and core exercise on unstable support on the balance and performance of a shooter. Methods: Fourteen athletes were randomly assigned to perform core muscle strength training for seven athletes, and seven athletes were exercised on an unstable surface. Two groups were conducted three times a week for 20 minutes. Static balance, dynamic balance, and shooting scores were measured before and after the experiment. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in static balance, dynamic balance in the group trained on the unstable support surface (p<.05). Conclusion: Based on this experiment, it can be seen that the balance training of the shooter on the unstable support surface is more effective than the balance of other methods.

Effect of Paretic Side and Non-paretic Side Arm Training on Trunk Control and Upper Limb Functions in Stroke Patients

Background: Stroke patients usually have arm weakness, which affects trunks and arms. Objective: To investigate the effects of paretic side and non-paretic side arm training on trunk control and upper limb functions. Design: Randomized Controlled Trial (single blind). Methods: Twenty patients with stroke in hospital were enrolled in the study. Twenty subjects were randomly assigned to paretic side arm training group (PATG, n = 10) or non-paretic side arm training group (NATG, n = 10). Trunk impairment scale (TIS) was used for trunk control, and box and block test (BBT) was used for upper limb function. Training was conducted for 4 weeks. Results: PATG showed significant difference in TIS (static balance, dynamic balance, coordination, total score) and BBT. NATG showed significant differences in static balance, and dynamic balance and total score except for coordination and BBT. PATG also showed a more significant difference in BBT and coordination and total score than NATG. Conclusions: The arm training performed on the paretic side are more effective than those performed on the non-paretic side in improving both upper limb function and trunk control in stroke patients.

Comparison of Static Balance in Male Football and Basketball Players by Using Flamingo Balance Test

Background: Balance plays a vital role in many sports. Static Balance has an exceptional effect on the performance of sports players and for injury prevention. Football and Basketball players require static balance for execution of sports specific skill. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the static balance in male football and basketball players. Methods: A total of 50 healthy male players, football (n=25) and basketball (n=25) from Sports Academies of Ahmedabad, Gujarat were selected for the study with purposive sampling. Static balance was assessed by using Flamingo Balance test. Results: Mann-Whitney Test was used to determine the significant difference between football and basketball players. The result of the study showed that there was a significant difference in static balance between male football and Basketball players(p&lt;0.01). Conclusion: Basketball players displayed inferior static balance than the football players by using Flamingo Balance Test.

The effects of neck muscular fatigue on static and dynamic postural control in elite male volleyball players

Introduction: Muscular fatigue is a common phenomenon in daily sports activities and is worsening motor performance. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of neck muscular fatigue on static and dynamic postural control in elite male volleyball players. Correspondence: Maryam Mazidi, MSc. Bandar Abbas, Iran Tel:+98 09381787230 Email: m.mazidi100@gmail.com Methods: For this study, 30 elite male athletes with mean age of 23.3p3.5 years old, height of 184.1p7.7 cm, and weight of 76.6p3.1 kg were selected in the available form and divided randomly into control and experimental groups. Fatigue protocol was induced on both sides via maximal exhausting protocol by instructing the subjects in experimental group to perform a lDumbbell Shrug Trap Exerciser commonly used in fitness training to specifically involve Levator Scapulae and Trapezius superior muscles. The subjectsr dynamic and static postural control immediately after fatigue were assessed by Biodex System (level 4 and 3). For statistical analysis paired and sample t-test (al0.05) were used. Results: The results of this study showed that in the level 4 of Biodex system there were significant differences in Ant-Post (P=0.030), Med-Lat (P=0.020), Limit of stability (P=0.012) and dynamic balance (P=0.011). In the level 8 of Biodex system there were significant differences in Ant-Post (P=0.022), Med-Lat (P=0.020), Limit of stability (P=0.011) and dynamic balance (P=0.021). With respect to study results, there were significant differences in static balance(P=0.012) in experimental group but there were not significant differences in control group (P=0.214). Conclusion: Based on this study results, we concluded that neck muscle fatigue affects stability indexes, static and dynamic postural control so it seems that increasing the endurance of neck muscles to prevent early time fatigue, should be considered.

The effects of whole body vibration on static balance, spinal curvature, pain, and disability of patients with low back pain.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of whole body vibration (WBV) on static balance, spinal curvature, pain, and the disability of patients with chronic lower back pain. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were of 40 patients, who were randomly assigned to WBV and control groups. Twenty-five minutes of lumbar stability training and 5 minutes of WBV were conducted for the WBV group, and 30 minutes of lumbar stability training was conducted for the control group. The training was conducted three times per week for a total of 6 weeks. Static balance, spinal curvature, pain, and disability were measured before and after the intervention. [Results] After the intervention, the WBV group showed a significant differences in static balance, spinal curvature, pain, and disability. The control group presented significant differences in pain, and disability. In the comparison of the two groups, the WBV group showed more significant improvements in the fall index and pain. [Conclusion] WBV can be recommended for the improvement of the balance ability and pain of chronic lower back pain patients.

The Effect of Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) on Static Balance and Gait

To investigate whether spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has a negative effect on static balance and gait, which is implicated by the increased incidence of falls leading to frequently occurring lead migrations. A controlled trial is performed with 11 subjects (four female, seven male) with a mean age of 46 years old. A baseline measurement consisting of static balance and gait tests was performed. Within two weeks after implantation of a spinal cord stimulator, subjects performed the same tests with both stimulation switched on and off. Static balance was assessed with eyes open and eyes closed on hard surface and foam surface. The velocity of the center of pressure and weight symmetry were the main outcome parameters. Kinematics and spatiotemporal outcome parameters were used to analyze gait. ANOVAs were used to compare between baseline, stimulation on, and stimulation off. Spinal cord stimulation resulted in significant pain relief as scored on a Visual Analog Scale (p < 0.001). Gait width decreased and this change (indicative of improvement in balance) was significant (p = 0.007). No other significant group differences were found between stimulation baseline and post-surgery measurements. SCS did not influence static balance or gait when group effects were analyzed. Four subjects showed significant differences in static balance between stimulation on and off. The lack of group differences in normal gait and static balance cannot explain the increased incidence of falls. However, four subjects showed an effect of SCS on static balance. Further research to clarify why only a part of the subjects experienced balance problems is recommended and assessments of more demanding balance and gait tasks are desirable.

Effect of 6 weeks wobble board exercises on static and dynamic balance of stroke survivors

Balance is a complex motor skill and it is frequently disturbed among stroke survivors. Rehabilitation experts are still facing challenges in achieving good stability. The primary aim of this study was to determine the effect of a wobble board exercise program on static and dynamic balance of hemiplegic subjects. Seventeen (17) stroke survivors were randomly selected into two groups. The subjects in the experimental group were trained on wobble board for six weeks while the control group received only the baseline treatment programs. The modified version of the timed balance test was used to assess balance while the foursquare step test was used to assess dynamic balance. Descriptive statistics and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data obtained. The result showed that there was significant difference in the static balance (eye closed) (F=7.49, P< 0.05) and dynamic balance (F3.20, P< 0.05) between the groups but there was no significant difference in static balance (eye opened) (F= 1.75, P> 0.05). The study concluded that wobble board exercise improved both static (eye closed) and dynamic balance of stroke survivor used in this study.
