Therapeutic effectiveness of modified endoscopic retrograde appendicitis therapy for acute appendicitis of different severities in children

Objective: To investigate the effects of modified endoscopic retrograde appendicitis therapy (mERAT) on the treatment of children with different severities of acute appendicitis. Methods: This study was a case-control study. A total of 586 children with acute appendicitis, who were admitted to the Pediatric Department of Second Affiliated Hospital of Air Force Medical University between January 2019 and November 2023, were selected as the research subjects. According to the severity of the disease, the patients were divided into simple appendicitis group, suppurative appendicitis group and perforated appendicitis group. The baseline data, hospitalization treatment and costs, outcomes, and recurrence in each group were analyzed, and the difference in the effectiveness of mERAT between the groups were compared by Kruskal-Wallis H test and χ2 test. Results: Among 586 children, there were 338 males and 248 females. The age at onset was 7.0 (4.6, 9.4) years. There were 475 cases of simple appendicitis, 78 cases of suppurative appendicitis, and 33 cases of perforated appendicitis. There were no significant differences in age and gender among the three groups (F=0.59, χ2=3.31, both P>0.05). However, there were statistically significant differences in body temperature, white blood cell counts, neutrophil percentage, lymphocyte percentage, nausea or vomiting, right lower abdominal pain, umbilical pain, right lower abdominal tenderness, and right lower abdominal rebound pain (H=7.56, 161.52, 169.11, and 169.61, χ2=12.05, 13.82, 12.05, 7.74, 20.35, and 94.61, all P<0.05). Also, the treatment time, postoperative hospital stay, total hospital stay, and cost showed statistically significant differences (H=4.70, 33.66, 34.99, 30.37, all P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the initial treatment success rate (98.1% (466/475) vs. 98.7% (77/78) vs. 90.9% (30/33), P=0.057). During the 30 (23, 36) months of follow-up, the recurrence rate was 7.9% (35/433) in the simple appendicitis group, 20.8% (15/72) in the suppurative appendicitis group, and 30.0% (9/30) in the perforated appendicitis group, with a statistically significant difference (χ2=23.56, P<0.001). Among the children with recurrent appendicitis, 15 cases still chose mERAT, of them 11 cases (31.2%) had simple appendicitis, 2 cases (2/15) had suppurative appendicitis, and 2 cases (2/9) had perforated appendicitis.The latest time to recurrence in the 3 groups was 32, 35 and 10 months, respectively. Conclusion: Treatment with mERAT has a good effect in pediatric simple appendicitis, but has a higher recurrence rate despite a better initial treatment success rate in suppurative appendicitis and perforated appendicitis.

Early Predictors of Fistula Formation Following Head and Neck Reconstruction.

Salivary fistula formation is a common and serious complication following head and neck reconstruction. Because it can cause delayed wound healing and infection and carotid artery rupture in severe cases, hence, early detection and treatment are crucial. This study was designed to identify early predictors of postoperative fistula formation. We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent head and neck reconstruction between 2015 and 2022. Body temperature, serum white blood cell (WBC) count, and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were assessed until postoperative day (POD) 14 and compared between patients with and without fistula. In this study, 200 patients were included. No significant differences in body temperature and WBC count were observed between the two groups during the entire study period. CRP levels after POD2 were higher in the fistula group than in the without fistula group. From the receiver operating characteristic curves comparing the two groups, the best cutoff level for CRP was 6.27 mg/dL from POD7 to POD8, with 77.1% sensitivity, 69.8% specificity, and 90.1% negative predictive value. CRP is a valuable predictor of fistula formation following head and neck reconstruction. The course of CRP levels in patients with fistulas remains consistently elevated compared to patients without fistulas, and it is particularly useful for the exclusion diagnosis of fistula.

Activation of oxytocinergic neurons enhances torpor in mice.

Mus musculus enters a torpid state in response to caloric restriction in sub-thermoneutral ambient temperatures. This torpid state is characterized by an adaptive and controlled decrease in metabolic rate, heart rate, body temperature, and activity. Previous research has identified the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) within the hypothalamus, a region containing oxytocin neurons, as a location that is active during torpor onset. We hypothesized that oxytocin neurons within the PVN are part of this neural circuit and that activation of oxytocin neurons would deepen and lengthen torpor bouts. We report that activation of oxytocin neurons alone is not sufficient to induce a torpor-like state in the fed mouse, with no significant difference in body temperature or heart rate upon activation of oxytocin neurons. However, we found that activation of oxytocin neurons prior to the onset of daily torpor both deepens and lengthens the subsequent bout, with a 1.7 ± 0.4°C lower body temperature and a 135 ± 32min increase in length. We therefore conclude that oxytocin neurons are involved in the neural circuitry controlling daily torpor in the mouse.

Effect of intervention of music-assisted therapy on physiological parameters of premature babies - A randomized trial

PurposeTo investigate the effect of intervention of music-assisted therapy (MAT) on the physiological parameters of premature babies. MethodsA two-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial. This study randomly enrolled a total of 41, 28-to-34-week-old premature babies as the subjects to measure their physiological parameters (body temperature, heartrate, respiration, and blood oxygen level). The control group (n = 20) received general routine care, the experimental group (n = 21) received the intervention of MAT (oriental Nanguan music) for three consecutive days, and the data were collected for the following three days after the intervention. ResultsThe results showed that compared with the premature babies receiving general routine care, there were statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in the heartrate and blood oxygen level in those receiving the MAT (experimental group). However, there was no statistically significant difference in body temperature and respiration. ConclusionThe heartrate, respiration, and blood oxygen level in the premature babies receiving the MAT were gradually stabilized. In addition, this study also verified that oriental Nanguan music, which has a low frequency and a simple melody, could stabilize the physiological parameters and sleep behavior of premature babies. This study could provide an auxiliary care method for the developmental care of premature babies. In the future, it is hoped that MAT can be included into the regular curriculum of nursing education to provide family-centered holistic care, reduce the stress and anxiety of parents of premature babies, and improve the clinical quality of care indicators.

THE EFFECT OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF SOURSOP LEAVES (ANNONA MURICATA L.) ON BODY TEMPERATURE IN MALE MICE (MUS MUSCULUS) INFECTED WITH BACTERIA SALMONELLA TYPHI

Soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) are a plant that has many health benefits that can be obtained from the fruit, leaves, and seeds. Soursop leaves contain saponins, flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids which can act as an antiseptic-disinfectant or as an antibacterial. Flavonoid compounds can be used as wound medicine, antifungal, antimicrobial, anticancer, and antiviral. In society, it is used by boiling the leaves and then drinking the boiled water. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of soursop leaf ethanol extract as an antibacterial against Salmonella typhi so that fever can be reduced. The dosage includes 100; 150; 200; and 250 mg/kg BW. No treatment was given as a negative control and chloramphenicol tablets as a positive control. Based on data analysis, it shows that there is a significant difference in body temperature after being tested using the t-test with a value of 0.000 &lt; 0.05. These results prove that body temperature which was initially normal during the acclimatization stage experienced an increase in body temperature when infected with Salmonella typhi. The results of the One-Way ANOVA test also showed an effect on reducing body temperature infected with Salmonella typhi. From several doses, the EDDS dose of 100 mg/kg BW was able to reduce body temperature by an average of 36.5°C.

Assessing the body temperature and spo2 level during covid-19 pandemic among urban and ruler women

The object of this study was to examine the Body temperature and Blood oxygen level (SpO2) between Women in area of Pune District especially in Junnar Tahasil urban and Ruler area. For this research, population form Junnar Nagarpalica area have been selected as population a total of 60 among them 30 urban women and 30 Ruler women age group of 21 to 40 years old. The test was conducted during the Maharashtra governments policy of “Maze Kutumba Mazi Zababdari” during Covid-19 Pandemics in 2020, so government permitted particular area for test and the particular data was submitted to government agencies also. Samples for this research were women in urban and Ruler area of Pune District especially in Junnar Tahasil area. Researcher took around 300 test (Morning at 9.00am.to11.30 am.) for every person in that area but children, men and senior citizens were excluded from this study so researcher have been selected total of 60 women age group of 21 to 40 years old population for particular study. For this study body temperature was measured by Digital Thermometer and blood oxygen level was measured by Pulse Oximeter. For these studies, Descriptive statistics, and Independent sample t-test used for the data analysis. Results: This particular research researcher shows that the Body temperature of urban women and ruler women was normal (t-3.669: P 0.06 &gt; 0.05) and also found that no significant difference in body temperature of urban women and ruler women. Blood oxygen level of urban women and ruler women was also normal (t- 2.91: P 0.79 &lt; 0.05) and significant difference found in SpO2 level of urban women and ruler women. There were no signs of any fever or infection. In this research researcher also shows the blood oxygen level of urban women and ruler women were normal so research conclude that no fever and infection sings found in any subject.

Clustering of Deceased Patients with COVID-19 in Iran Based on Clinical Features in Hospitalization

Background: Effective clinical care and identifying susceptibility to COVID-19-related mortality requires rapid recognition of risk factors and their relations with disease outcomes. This study aimed to cluster and identify various subgroups of COVID-19 patients and examine the relationship between these subgroups and the causes of death.&#x0D; Methods: This retrospective study assessed the risk factors contributing to COVID-19 patients’ death (n = 128) by evaluating deceased patients' demographic, clinical, and laboratory features and clustering various subgroups of individuals to investigate any correlation.&#x0D; Results: The mean age of deceived patients was 69.7 years, and the majority of them were male (65.6%). The levels of blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, lactate dehydrogenase, and C-reactive protein were high at admission and increased during the hospitalization. Shortness of breath (68%) and cough (62.5%) were the most common symptoms, and hypertension (50.8%) was the most common comorbidity among deceased patients. The clustering quality based on the underlying disease and symptoms was not acceptable. However, clustering based on vital signs showed significant differences in body temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation (P&lt;0.001). Furthermore, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) was significantly higher in patients with weaker vital signs than those with better vital signs (15.36% vs. 0.0% P = 0.002).&#x0D; Conclusion: Older age, male sex, hypertension, and high inflammatory markers might be the risk factors for COVID-19-related mortality. Furthermore, considering that patients with poor vital signs were susceptible to develop DIC, prevention of these consequences might be helpful in COVID-19 management.

Oxidative response of sheep to transcervical applications.

This study aimed to investigate the stress-related changes that may occur in sheep following non-surgical cervical line passage. A total of 20 sheep underwent transcervical transition, and their heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, and blood samples were collected at specific time points: 1 h prior to the procedure, immediately after the procedure, and at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 h post-procedure. The study found that there was a statistically significant decrease in body temperature immediately after the procedure (p < .05); however, there were no significant differences in body temperature at other time points (p > .05). Respiratory rate remained similar throughout the study, and no significant differences were observed (p > .05). On the other hand, there was a significant increase in heart rate at the 1-h mark after the procedure (p < .05), which subsequently decreased to a similar level as the control group at the 4-h mark after the procedure (p > .05). The cortisol levels increased significantly after the application (p < .05) but decreased to a level similar to the control after 1 h (p > .05). The level of nitric oxide increased significantly in the first hour (p < .05) and decreased by the 5th hour (p < .05). There was a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and total oxidant capacity (TOC) levels 2 h after the application (p < .05), but this increase ceased at the 4th and 5th hours for MDA (p > .05) and at the 3rd, 4th and 5th hours for TOC (p > .05). The total antioxidant capacity decreased after the 2nd hour of application (p < .05) but remained similar at the fourth and 5th hours (p > .05). In conclusion, based on the cortisol data, transcervical manipulations create short-term stress. Therefore, it may be necessary to use various antioxidants before such procedures to reduce the effects of oxidative stress.

Goiter in Cross Breed Goat Kids at Basrah Province, Iraq.

Cases of Goiter related to iodine deficiency in cross-breed goat kids in Basrah, Iraq are very scarce, and little information has been provided; therefore, the present study highlighted a clinical case of goat kids suffering from Goiter due to iodine deficiency with hematological and biochemical evaluation. The study examined 44 cross-breed goat kids, 1-3 months old (males and females), who showed painless palpable enlargement on one side of the cranio-ventral neck region or near the throat rejoin with weakness and alopecia. Ten clinically healthy kids of the same age were considered a control group. This study's diseased and control group was subjected to complete clinical examinations. Diseased animals show painless palpable and visible enlarged thyroid glands with or without enlargement of the neck, sparse hair coats with little alopecia, slow growth rate, irregular appetite or unwillingness to suck, weakness, and emaciation. Furthermore, the presence of thyroid thrill during palpation of jugular furrow was also detected. Moreover, diseased goat kids show no significant difference in body temperature; however, a significant increase was encountered in respiratory rate with a significant decrease in heart rate. On the other hand, no significant changes have been detected in the hematological analysis between diseased goat kids and the control group concerning the chemical analysis between the diseased cross-breed goat kids and the control group; the results of the present study indicated a significant increase in TSH, whereas, T3, T4, FT4, glucose level, Vit. E (α-tocopherol) and serum glutathione peroxides were lowered in diseased cross-breed goat kids compared with the control group. In contrast, a significant hyper- cholesterolemia was indicated in diseased animals than in the control group. It was concluded that Goiter in kids could reflect harm effects terminated mostly with death. Therefore, improving the maternal diet is an important reason to reduce the development of the disease.

Prognostic Prediction for Therapeutic Effects of Mutian on 324 Client-Owned Cats with Feline Infectious Peritonitis Based on Clinical Laboratory Indicators and Physical Signs.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal disease classified as either effusive, non-effusive ('dry'), or a mixture ('mixed') of the forms of FIP, with mixed showing signs of both effusive and dry. To determine whether the therapeutic effect of Mutian on dry and mixed FIP can be predicted using clinical indicators before starting treatment, we entered 161 cats with mixed FIP and 163 cats with dry FIP into this study. Physical assessments, the reverse transcriptase-PCR detection of viral genes, and clinical laboratory tests (hematocrit, albumin/globulin ratio, serum amyloid A, α1-acid glycoprotein, and total bilirubin) were performed before Mutian was administered. These indicators were compared between the FIP groups that survived after receiving Mutian for 84 days and those that died before the completion of treatment. Significant differences in body temperature, appetite, and activity scores were confirmed between the surviving and non-surviving groups. The therapeutic effect was insufficient when total bilirubin levels increased in cats with the mixed form. In both of the FIP types, therapeutic effects were difficult to obtain when neurological clinical signs were observed. The therapeutic effects of Mutian on the cats with dry and mixed FIP can be predicted based on pre-treatment body temperature, appetite scores, and activity scores, as well as the presence of neurological signs.

Effect of Short Duration Used of Active Prewarming for Preventing Hypothermia in Non-Anesthetized Volunteer: A Randomized-Controlled Trial

Background: Prewarming with a forced-air warmer device at least 30 minutes before entering the operating room (OR) helps to prevent inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH), although doing so on a regular schedule may be difficult. Prewarming for a short time may reduce IPH and is more practical. Objective: To investigate the incidence of hypothermia in non-anesthetized volunteers who used a forced-air warmer device for 10 minutes before entering the OR. Materials and Methods: The present study was a prospective, randomized-controlled trial that included 32 non-anesthetized volunteers. Sixteen volunteers were randomly assigned to receive prewarming using a forced-air warmer set at 38℃ for 10 minutes as the PW group and 16 other volunteers did not receive prewarming as the NW group, before entering a 20℃ OR for an hour. The primary outcome was the incidence of hypothermia in the OR. The secondary outcomes were a change in body temperature in the OR, thermal comfort, the requirement for an additional forced-air warmer device, and complications such as skin rash and burn. Results: The incidence of hypothermia in the OR was 25% in the PW group and 18.75% in the NW group, with no statistically significant differences (p&gt;0.999). There were no significant differences in body temperature between groups. In the waiting room, about 50% of the PW group and none of the NW group reported feeling hot discomfort (p=0.002). However, there were no significant differences in thermal comfort when entering the OR and PACU. No participant asked for an additional forced-air warmer device, and there were no observable device-related complications. Conclusion: A short-term use of active prewarming cannot reduce the incidence of hypothermia in non-anesthetized volunteers. Keywords: Short duration; Active prewarming; Hypothermia

EFFICACY OF PERCUTANEOUS TRANSHEPATIC CHOLECYSTOSTOMY IN ACUTEOBSTRUCTIVE CHOLECYSTITIS

Acute obstructive cholecystitis is a common disease with a significant risk of mortality and complications. Active surgical tactics, such as open and laparoscopic access, pose a significant risk for elderly patients with concomitant diseases on the background of acute cholecystitis. The aim of our study is to analyze the effectiveness of percutaneous transhepatic cholecystostomy (PTCS) in acute obstructive cholecystitis (AOC) and subsequent laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LCE). Materials and methods. Retrospectively, we analyzed 64 patients treated with AOC in the period from 2017 to 2021 at the NSCS named after A.N. Syzganov. We divided them into 2 groups depending on surgical treatment. The first group: patients who were performedPTCS (n=29) at the first stage. The second stage, LCE was performed during the waiting period from 3 days to 72 days. The second group: patients who underwent LCE without drainage of the gallbladder (n=35). Also, the patients of the first group were divided into 3 subgroups depending on the waiting time: group A - LCE was performed within 10 days after PTCS, subgroup B - LCE was performed after from 2 to 4 weeks (n=12), patients of the subgroup C, LCE were performed after 4 weeks after PTCS. Preoperative, intraoperative data and postoperative complications were analyzed. Results. According to preoperative data, there was no significant difference in body temperature, laboratory data and concomitant diseases. The statistical difference was revealed only in the age of patients (65.3±9.0 vs 53.4±15.4). The duration of the operation in the second group of LCE was longer compared to the first group, but no significant difference was detected (108.1 ± 30.5 vs 117.9 ± 39.9). In the postoperative period after LCE, complications were observed in 5 (14.2%) cases: bleeding in 4 (11.4%) cases and suppuration of the postoperative wound in 1 (2.8%) case. Conversion was performed in 10 (15.6%) cases, and in one (1.5%) case, the choledochal wall was injured intraoperatively. There was no significant difference between groups A, B and C. Conclusion.The use of two-stage treatment significantly reduces the conversion to open surgery, significantly reduces postoperative complications and hospital stay in the postoperative period. According to the results of our research, the most optimal interval between PTCS and LCE is a period of more than 4 weeks.

Antiviral activity of mink interferon alpha expressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris.

Many viruses can cause infections in mink, including canine distemper virus, mink enteritis virus, and Aleutian disease virus. Current treatments are ineffective, and these infections are often fatal, causing severe economic losses. As antiviral drugs may effectively prevent and control these infections, recent research has increasingly focused on antiviral interferons. Herein, the gene encoding a mature mink interferon alpha (MiIFN-α) was synthesized according to the P. pastoris preference of codon usage and a recombinant plasmid, pPICZαA-MiIFN-α, was constructed. pPICZαA-MiIFN-α was linearized and transformed into the P. pastoris X33 strain, and zeocin-resistant transformants were selected. Protein expression was induced by methanol. SDS-PAGE and western blot analyses showed that a 25-kDa fusion protein was expressed in the culture supernatant. Antiviral activity of the expressed protein was determined using cytopathic effect inhibition (CPEI). The purified MiIFN-α significantly inhibited the cytopathic effect of vesicular stomatitis virus with a green fluorescent protein (VSV-GFP) in F81 feline kidney cells, with an antiviral activity of 6.4 × 107 IU/mL; it also significantly inhibited MEV replication in F81 cells. MiIFN-α antiviral activity against VSV-GFP was significantly reduced on treatment with pH 4 and pH 10 conditions for 24 h (p < 0.01). Serum MiIFN-α concentrations in rat were measured using enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay; MiIFN-α concentrations in rat serum peaked at ~36 h after injection. A high dose of MiIFN-α was safe for use. There were no significant differences in body temperature, tissue changes, and lymphocyte, total white blood cell, and central granulocyte counts between the injected and control groups (p > 0.05). These findings lay a foundation for the large-scale production of recombinant MiIFNs.

Method of measuring effects of study procedures in single and pair housed New Zealand White rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)

Social housing of laboratory rabbits is encouraged and thought to improve animal welfare due to the social nature of this species. However, there is limited published information comparing the physiologic and cardiovascular (CV) effects of paired and single housed adult female rabbits in commonly used laboratory caging. This study describes measurement of heart rate, systolic blood pressure, activity level, body temperature and pairing methods in four female New Zealand White rabbits that were previously implanted with M10 cardiovascular telemetry devices. Data was collected in single housed rabbits having no history of social housing while they were undisturbed in the home cage, during restraint, intramuscular injections and intravenous blood collection. The same animals were then placed in compatible pairs and housed in conventional Allentown caging. As expected, we found increased activity in paired rabbits but no significant differences in body temperatures, and CV parameters in single and paired rabbits undergoing the same procedures. These data suggest that paired rabbits can be used for safety pharmacology studies with minimal impact to data, while supporting improved animal welfare.

Comparison of two different uses of underbody forced-air warming blankets for the prevention of hypothermia in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery: a prospective randomized study

BackgroundForced-air warming (FAW) is an effective method of preventing inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH). However, its warming effects can be influenced by the style and position of the FAW blanket. This study aimed to compare the effects of underbody FAW blankets being placed under or over patients in preventing IPH.MethodsPatients (n=100) undergoing elective arthroscopic shoulder surgery in the lateral decubitus position were randomized into either under body (UB) group or the over body (OB) group (50 per group). The body temperature of the patients was recorded from baseline to the end of anesthesia. The incidences of postoperative hypothermia and shivering were also collected.ResultsA steady decline in the body temperature was observed in both groups up to 60 minutes after the start of FAW. After 60 minutes of warming, the OB group showed a gradual increase in the body temperature. However, the body temperature still decreased in UB group until 75 minutes, with a low of 35.7℃ ± 0.4℃. Then the body temperature increased mildly and reached 35.8℃ ± 0.4℃ at 90 minutes. After 45 minutes of warming, the body temperature between the groups was significantly different (P < 0.05). The incidence of postoperative hypothermia in the UB group was significantly higher than that in the OB group (P = 0.023).ConclusionsThe body temperature was significantly better with the use of underbody FAW blankets placed over patients than with them placed under patients. However, there was not a clinically significant difference in body temperature. The incidence of postoperative hypothermia was much lower in the OB group. Therefore, placing underbody FAW blankets over patients is recommended for the prevention of IPH in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery.Trial registrationThis single-center, prospective, RCT has completed the registration of the Chinese Clinical Trial Center at 13/1/2021 with the registration number ChiCTR2100042071. It was conducted from 14/1/2021 to 30/10/2021 as a single, blinded trial in Sichuan Provincial Orthopedic Hospital.

Effectiveness of hot water foot bath therapy on body temperature among patients with fever in selected ICUs of a tertiary care hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab

Fever itself is not an illness. A fever is usually a sign that immune system is busy fighting an infection or other illness. Water is an excellent conductor, which allows it to transfer heat effectively and quickly. Water has a temperature conducting capacity twenty-seven times that of air. When Hot Water Foot Bath applied for 15-20 minutes the blood vessels in the feet starts expanding and gets improved circulation, and relieving aches, tiredness and fever. The improved blood circulation resets the hypothalamic set points by heat transfer from higher heat area to lower heat area. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of hot water foot bath therapy on body temperature among patients with fever. Methodology: In this study, with Quantitative approach, pre-test and post-test control group design was used. This study was conducted in ICUs of Tertiary care Hospital, Ludhiana The target population consists of patients with fever admitted in ICUs. Purposive sampling technique was used to draw sample from target population as per inclusion and exclusion criteria. With lottery method, patients (N= 50) were divided into two groups i.e. n1=25 (experimental group) and n2=25 (Control group). Pre-test of body temperature was done by using standardized digital thermometer. For experimental group, hot water foot bath therapy at 107.6 °F (42°C) water temperature as measured with lotion thermometer was given for 15 minutes. Later, post-test of body temperature was done to determine the effectiveness of hot water foot bath therapy. Result: The findings of the study showed that significant difference has been found in experimental group and control group in pre-test and post-test between the groups and within experimental groups. In between the groups, i.e. in experimental group was 99.424±0.5811 and in control group was 100.648±05516. Within the experimental group, mean value of body temperature in pre-test was 100.632 ±0.4110 °F, in posttest it was 99.424 ±0.5811°F, whereas, in control group mean value of body temperature in pre-test was 100.624±0.4944°F, and in post-test it was 100.648±0.5516°F. Conclusion: The finding of the study demonstrated that hot water foot bath therapy was an effective non-Pharmacological method to reduce the body temperature. The mean post-test body temperature was lower than mean pre-test body temperature. There was significant difference in body temperature has been found between the experimental group and control group, as well as with in the experimental group in pre-test and post-test.

Pengaruh Metode Kangguru terhadap Penurunan Suhu Tubuh, Frekuensi Menyusu dan Durasi Tidur Bayi

Immunizations sometimes have side effects once they are given to babies. DPT immunization is one that has a low-grade fever side effect and sometimes results in high fever and seizures. One of the efforts to treat fever in infants is the kangaroo method. Through this method, heat transfer occurs between mother and baby, increasing the frequency of breastfeeding which can meet the fluid needs of the feverish baby and facilitate the baby in increasing the duration of quiet sleep, less crying and less activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the kangaroo method on decreasing body temperature, feeding frequency and infant sleep duration. Sampling using Porbability Sampling with Simple Random Sampling technique, totaling 30 people and divided into 2 groups of 15 people each, namely the experimental and control groups. The results of the analysis are based on several assumptions of One way MANOVA, namely there is linearity between variables, the data is normally distributed, multicollinearity is not detected and the covariance matrix between groups is assumed to be the same as the Box'M value p = 0.006 &gt; 0.001. The results of the multivariate test showed that there was a significant difference between the two groups with a value of F (3.26) = 49.334, p&lt; 0.001; Wilk’s ʌ 0.149, ƞp2 = 0.851, then the univariate results showed that group differences caused significant differences in body temperature, feeding frequency and sleep duration with p &lt; 0.001. The results of the bonferroni correction further test showed that the average decrease in body temperature, feeding frequency and duration of infant sleep in the experimental group was better than the control group with p &lt; 0.001. This study proves that the kangaroo method has an effect on decreasing body temperature, breastfeeding frequency and infant sleep duration after DPT immunization.

EFFECT OF CLING WRAP ON BODY TEMPERATURE AND WEIGHT AMONG LOW BIRTH WEIGHT NEONATES ADMITTED IN SICK NEWBORN CARE UNIT OF SELECTED MEDICAL COLLEGES OF WEST BENGAL

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) is a major challenging public health problem in developing countries. LBW neonates are more susceptible to evaporative heat loss and develop hypothermia immediately after birth that may lead to morbidity and mortality. An experimental study was undertaken among low birth weight neonates in selected medical colleges of West Bengal, with the objectives of effect of cling wrap on body weight and temperature among LBW neonates. Methods: 60 (E =30 &amp; C= 30) subjects were recruited by simple random sampling technique (along with neonatal characteristics). Data were collected through record analysis proforma, digital baby weighing scale and digital thermometer. All tools were tested for validity and reliability and instruments were calibrated before data collection. Permission obtained from Ethics committee before data collection. Results: The findings revealed that most of the subjects (76.67%) had hypothermia in pretest and majority of the subjects (60%) had hypothermia in posttest in control group and most of the subjects (83.33%) had hypothermia before use of cling wrap whereas no one had hypothermia after the use of cling wrap in experimental group. There was significant difference in body temperature between control and experimental group for all five days in post-test at 0.05 level of significance. There was no significant difference in body weight between the control and experimental group of neonates but weight loss is less in experimental group than control group which is not statistically significant for all five days in posttest. The results also showed the significant association between post-test level of thermoregulation and weight at birth in control group of neonates. Conclusion: Therefore, use of cling wrap might be a simple innovative intervention for maintaining body temperature and preventing weight loss to some extent among LBW neonates.

Application of a new temporary intravascular shunt device in limb injury of dogs

To explore the effectiveness and safety of a new temporary intravascular shunt (TIVS) device for limb injury in dogs. Eighteen adult beagle dogs, male or female, weighing (20±2) kg, were taken for experiment. A semi-amputated limb model was made by circular amputating the knee joint of one hindlimb, which retained only skin, femoral artery, femoral vein, femoral nerve, and femur. Then the femoral artery was clamped for 2 hours in all animals, resulting in the ischemic environment of the distal limbs. The animals were randomly divided into 3 groups ( n=6). In group A, the bypass was started by using a new TIVS device and replenishing saline through the infusion port; In group B, after intravenous injection of heparin sodium solution, the bypass was started by using a new TIVS device and replenishing 3% heparin sodium solution through the infusion port; In group C, the bypass was started by using the self-made bypass tube. The bypass was end after 12 hours. The general vital signs (body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure) before and after bypass were measured, and the time required for the insertion of the bypass tube, the patency during the bypass, shedding, and thrombosis were recorded. Routine blood test and blood coagulation indicators [white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), platelet (PLT), hemoglobin (HGB), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen (Fib)] and biochemical indicators [lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK)] were recorded before bypass and after 3, 6, 9, and 12 hours of bypass, respectively. The gastrocnemius muscles on the surgical side before and after bypass were harvested and the muscle necrosis, the wet-to-dry weight ratio, and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured. In addition, the gastrocnemius muscle and femoral artery were observed after bypass by HE staining. There was no significant difference in body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure between groups before and after bypass ( P>0.05). Compared with groups A and B, the time required for the insertion of the bypass tube in group C was significantly longer ( P<0.05), and the number of thrombus in the bypass tube, the blockage time significantly increased ( P<0.05). Shedding and sliding of bypass tube occurred in 3 cases of group C, but no shedding or sliding of bypass tube occurred in groups A and B; there was no significant difference in the incidence of shedding between groups ( P=1.000). There was no significant difference ( P>0.05) in routine blood test, blood coagulation indicators, LDH, CK, MPO, MDA, and wet-to-dry weight ratio between groups before bypass. After bypass, the routine blood test and blood coagulation indicators of the 3 groups did not change significantly, and the differences between groups was not significant ( P>0.05); LDH and CK gradually increased ( P<0.05), and group C significantly higher than groups A and B at 12 hours ( P<0.05). After bypass, thrombosis was seen in the bypass tube, the distal gastrocnemius muscle necrosis occurred in group C, and the femoral artery injury was slightly heavier than that in groups A and B. The new TIVS device is safe and effective and has the advantages of convenient implantation, lower thrombosis rate, and less limb ischemia-reperfusion injury.
