Species Diversity and Composition of Macrophytes in Shallabugh Wetland, Ganderbal, Jammu, and Kashmir, India

Macrophyte diversity, richness, and composition of the Shallabugh wetland Reserve, one of the Important Bird and Biodiversity Area in India. The wetland shows the presence of 39 plant species of 27 families and three tree species belonging to three families and a diversity index of H = 3.12 and Evenness e^H/S = 0.5836. The high Importance Value Index (IVI=22.8) was recorded for Typha latifolia, followed by Ceratophyllum demersum (IVI=19.2). The shift in macrophyte community structure is evidenced by the local extinction of Nelumbo nucifera from the Shallabugh wetland area and the near-disappearance of some economically important plants such as Trapa natans (IVI= 0.24). The investigation of various aspects of the wetland ecology of Shallabugh reveals that species composition has witnessed great changes over the years. The conversion of the 141 hectares of wetland into grassland gave way for terrestrial species to flourish. The study serves as the baseline study of the macrophyte community composition and structure of the Shallabugh wetland.

1 The role of gut microbiota on regulation of growth and metabolism by branched-chain amino acids

Abstract Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) including leucine, isoleucine and valine are essential amino acids, which are involved in energy homeostasis and regulation of many physiological paradigms including growth. The BCAA serve not only as an essential substrate in the synthesis of body proteins, but also have an important role in regulation of protein turnover. The effects of BCAA on growth and metabolism are likely mediated through different pathways including shifts in metabolic profile in peripheral organs, oxidative capacity of muscle, gut development, and protein metabolism in muscle. Although it has not been appropriately studied or fully dissected, the impact of BCAA on growth and metabolism is thought to lie in the alteration of gut microbiota by BCAA. It has long been believed that gut microbiota, more specifically, the activity of the microbiome and its metabolic products, directly influence a variety of aspects in metazoan physiology. For example, deregulation of bacterial community structure has been linked with host longevity and stress resistance, the pathogenesis of several disorders, regulation of appetite. Multiple studies have demonstrated that modulation of dietary BCAA levels could elicit clear shifts in gut microbial community structure. As part of “Physiology Symposium: The Microbiome and the Host: Functional Role in Metabolism, Immunity, and Gut-Brain Axis”, the possible involvement of intestinal microbiota on regulatory roles of BCAA on growth and metabolism will be discussed.

Experimental seabed disturbance effects on Chatham Rise deep-sea meiofaunal communities, Southwest Pacific

ABSTRACT Growing global demand for deep-sea resources may lead to increased pressure on benthic ecosystems. Here we examined changes in meiofaunal communities following an in situ physical disturbance experiment. A significant change in meiofaunal community structure in surface (0-1 cm) and subsurface (1-5 cm) sediments was observed immediately following the disturbance at both the directly and indirectly disturbed sites and adjacent potentially undisturbed/indirectly disturbed sites, reflecting a decrease in the abundance of several meiofaunal taxa. Abundance, taxon richness and diversity also decreased immediately following disturbance across all sites. Surface community parameters returned to pre-disturbance values one year post-disturbance, but only a partial recovery was observed for the subsurface community over the same period. The accumulation of recently resuspended and deposited sediment could have led to lower meiofaunal density and shifts in community structure. Passive dispersal and recolonisation from outside the study area may explain why the surface community recovered more fully than the subsurface community. We show that meiofauna were negatively affected by a relatively minor disturbance compared to proposed commercial seabed mining operations, but the finding that communities had largely recovered one year after disturbance has implications for resilience of fauna to much more pronounced impacts of potential large-scale mining.

Urban stormwater green infrastructure: Evaluating the public health service role of bioretention using microbial source tracking and bacterial community analyses

Bioretention cells (BRCs) control stormwater flow on-site during precipitation, reducing runoff and improving water quality through chemical, physical, and biological processes. While BRCs are effective in these aspects, they provide habitats for wildlife and may face microbial hazards from fecal shedding, posing a potential threat to human health and the nearby environment. However, limited knowledge exists regarding the ability to control microbial hazards (e.g., beyond using typical indicator bacteria) through stormwater biofiltration. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to characterize changes in the bacterial community of urban stormwater undergoing bioretention treatment, with the goal of assessing the public health implications of these green infrastructure solutions. Samples from BRC inflow and outflow in Columbus, Ohio, were collected post-heavy storms from October 2021 to March 2022. Conventional culture-based E. coli monitoring and microbial source tracking (MST) were conducted to identify major fecal contamination extent and its sources (i.e., human, canine, avian, and ruminant). Droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) was utilized to quantify the level of host-associated fecal contamination in addition to three antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs): tetracycline resistance gene (tetQ), sulfonamide resistance gene (sul1), and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase resistance gene (blaKPC). Subsequently, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was conducted to characterize bacterial community differences between stormwater BRC inflow and outflow. Untreated urban stormwater reflects anthropogenic contamination, suggesting it as a potential source of contamination to waterbodies and urban environments. When comparing inlet and outlet BRC samples, urban stormwater treated via biofiltration did not increase microbial hazards, and changes in bacterial taxa and alpha diversity were negligible. Beta diversity results reveal a significant shift in bacterial community structure, while simultaneously enhancing the water quality (i.e., reduction of metals, total suspended solids, total nitrogen) of urban stormwater. Significant correlations were found between the bacterial community diversity of urban stormwater with fecal contamination (e.g. dog) and ARG (sul1), rainfall intensity, and water quality (hardness, total phosphorous). The study concludes that bioretention technology can sustainably maintain urban microbial water quality without posing additional public health risks, making it a viable green infrastructure solution for heavy rainfall events exacerbated by climate change.

Disturbance of the human gut microbiota in patients with Myotonic Dystrophy type 1

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder. Although DM1 is primarily characterized by progressive muscular weakness, it exhibits many multisystemic manifestations, such as cognitive deficits, cardiac conduction abnormalities, and cataracts, as well as endocrine and reproductive issues. Additionally, the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is frequently affected, encompassing the entire digestive tract. However, the underlying causes of these GI symptoms remain uncertain, whether it is biomechanical problems of the intestine, involvement of bacterial communities, or both. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the structural changes in the gut microbiome of DM1 patients. To achieve this purpose, 35 patients with DM1 were recruited from the DM-Scope registry of the neuromuscular clinic in the Saguenay–Lac-St-Jean region of the province of Québec, Canada. Stool samples from these 35 patients, including 15 paired samples with family members living with them as controls, were collected. Subsequently, these samples were sequenced by 16S MiSeq and were analyzed with DADA2 to generate taxonomic signatures. Our analysis revealed that the DM1 status correlated with changes in gut bacterial community. Notably, there were differences in the relative abundance of Bacteroidota, Euryarchaeota, Fusobacteriota, and Cyanobacteria Phyla compared to healthy controls. However, no significant shift in gut microbiome community structure was observed between DM1 phenotypes. These findings provide valuable insights into how the gut bacterial community, in conjunction with biomechanical factors, could potentially influence the gastrointestinal tract of DM1 patients.

Effect of mineral fertilizers on microorganisms community characteristic during leaf litter decomposition under Pinus massoniana in a subtropical forest

Leaf litter decomposition is a crucial ecological process driven by bacteria and fungi, which release extracellular enzymes. However, the effects of mineral fertilizer application on microbial aspects in forest ecosystems are unclear. We hypothesized that mineral fertilizers significantly affect bacteria and fungi in terms of function, diversity, structure, and composition. We also proposed that microbial phyla respond more to fertilizers than untreated conditions and that there's a strong correlation between bacteria, fungi, and chemical factors under fertilizer treatments. Using next-generation sequencing, we investigated microbial responses in a Masson pine plantation across four sampling times (90, 180, 270, and 360 days) with control (CK), N fertilization (+N), N and P fertilization (+NP), and N, P, K fertilization (+NPK). Mineral fertilizer impacts were more pronounced on bacterial diversity than fungal diversity, especially in alpha diversity. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria, and Cyanobacteria (11.76, 0.34, 0.08, 1.86, 7.17 %), respectively, responded positively to fertilizers, while only Ascomycota and Basidiomycota (14.77, 16.51 %), respectively, were influenced among fungal phyla. Beta diversity analysis revealed distinct groupings of bacterial and fungal communities over time. Redundancy analysis indicated shifts in community structure linked to soil chemical properties. Our findings concluded that NPK fertilizer might be a preferred management option, providing valuable insights for fertilization strategies in subtropical forest ecosystems, benefiting both surface and belowground components. However, the application of mineral fertilizer requires careful consideration of the implications and limitations on microbial communities.

An abrupt regime shift of bacterioplankton community from weak to strong thermal pollution in a subtropical bay.

Thermal pollution from the cooling system of the nuclear power plants greatly changes the environmental and the ecological conditions of the receiving marine water body, but we know little about their impact on the steady-state transition of marine bacterioplankton communities. In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing based on the 16S rRNA gene to investigate the impact of the thermal pollution on the bacterioplankton communities in a subtropical bay (the Daya Bay). We observed that thermal pollution from the cooling system of the nuclear power plant caused a pronounced thermal gradient ranging from 19.6°C to 24.12°C over the whole Daya Bay. A temperature difference of 4.5°C between the northern and southern parts of the bay led to a regime shift in the bacterioplankton community structure. In the three typical scenarios of regime shifts, the steady-state transition of bacterioplankton community structure in response to temperature increasing was more likely consistent with an abrupt regime shift rather than a smooth regime or a discontinuous regime model. Water temperature was a decisive factor on the regime shift of bacterioplankton community structure. High temperature significantly decreased bacterioplankton diversity and shifted its community compositions. Cyanobium and Synechococcus of Cyanobacteria, NS5 marine group of Bacteroidota, and Vibrio of Gammaproteobacteria were found that favored high temperature environments. Furthermore, the increased water temperature significantly altered the community assembly of bacterioplankton in Daya Bay, with a substantial decrease in the proportion of drift and others, and a marked increase in the proportion of homogeneous selection. In summary, we proposed that seawater temperature increasing induced by the thermal pollution resulted in an abrupt regime shift of bacterioplankton community in winter subtropical bay. Our research might broad our understanding of marine microbial ecology under future conditions of global warming.

Microbial Community Response to Granular Peroxide-Based Algaecide Treatment of a Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Bloom in Lake Okeechobee, Florida (USA).

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) occur in fresh water globally. These can degrade water quality and produce toxins, resulting in ecological and economic damages. Thus, short-term management methods (i.e., algaecides) are necessary to rapidly mitigate the negative impacts of cyanoHABs. In this study, we assess the efficacy of a hydrogen peroxide-based algaecide (PAK® 27) on a Microcystis dominated bloom which occurred within the Pahokee Marina on Lake Okeechobee, Florida, USA. We observed a significant reduction in chlorophyll a (96.81%), phycocyanin (93.17%), and Microcystis cell counts (99.92%), and a substantial reduction in microcystins (86.7%) 48 h after treatment (HAT). Additionally, there was a significant shift in bacterial community structure 48 HAT, which coincided with an increase in the relative abundance of photosynthetic protists. These results indicate that hydrogen peroxide-based algaecides are an effective treatment method for cyanoHAB control and highlight their effects on non-target microorganisms (i.e., bacteria and protists).

Impact of prescribed fire on soil microbial communities in a Southern Appalachian Forest clear-cut.

Escalating wildfire frequency and severity, exacerbated by shifting climate patterns, pose significant ecological and economic challenges. Prescribed burns, a common forest management tool, aim to mitigate wildfire risks and protect biodiversity. Nevertheless, understanding the impact of prescribed burns on soil and microbial communities in temperate mixed forests, considering temporal dynamics and slash fuel types, remains crucial. Our study, conducted at the University of Tennessee Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center in Oak Ridge, TN, employed controlled burns across various treatments, and the findings indicate that low-intensity prescribed burns have none or minimal short-term effects on soil parameters but may alter soil nutrient concentrations, as evidenced by significant changes in porewater acetate, formate, and nitrate concentrations. These burns also induce shifts in microbial community structure and diversity, with Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria increasing significantly post-fire, possibly aiding soil recovery. In contrast, Verrucomicrobia showed a notable decrease over time, and other specific microbial taxa correlated with soil pH, porewater nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate concentrations. Our research contributes to understanding the intricate relationships between prescribed fire, soil dynamics, and microbial responses in temperate mixed forests in the Southern Appalachian Region, which is valuable for informed land management practices in the face of evolving environmental challenges.

Shifts in dominance of benthic communities along a gradient of water temperature and turbidity in tropical coastal ecosystems.

Tropical coastal benthic communities will change in species composition and relative dominance due to global (e.g., increasing water temperature) and local (e.g., increasing terrestrial influence due to land-based activity) stressors. This study aimed to gain insight into possible trajectories of coastal benthic assemblages in Raja Ampat, Indonesia, by studying coral reefs at varying distances from human activities and marine lakes with high turbidity in three temperature categories (<31°C, 31-32°C, and >32°C). The benthic community diversity and relative coverage of major benthic groups were quantified via replicate photo transects. The composition of benthic assemblages varied significantly among the reef and marine lake habitats. The marine lakes <31°C contained hard coral, crustose coralline algae (CCA), and turf algae with coverages similar to those found in the coral reefs (17.4-18.8% hard coral, 3.5-26.3% CCA, and 15-15.5% turf algae, respectively), while the higher temperature marine lakes (31-32°C and >32°C) did not harbor hard coral or CCA. Benthic composition in the reefs was significantly influenced by geographic distance among sites but not by human activity or depth. Benthic composition in the marine lakes appeared to be structured by temperature, salinity, and degree of connection to the adjacent sea. Our results suggest that beyond a certain temperature (>31°C), benthic communities shift away from coral dominance, but new outcomes of assemblages can be highly distinct, with a possible varied dominance of macroalgae, benthic cyanobacterial mats, or filter feeders such as bivalves and tubeworms. This study illustrates the possible use of marine lake model systems to gain insight into shifts in the benthic community structure of tropical coastal ecosystems if hard corals are no longer dominant.

Continuous cropping system altered soil microbial communities and nutrient cycles.

Understanding the response of microbial communities and their potential functions is essential for sustainability of agroecosystems under long-term continuous cropping. However, limited research has focused on investigating the interaction between soil physicochemical factors and microbial community dynamics in agroecosystems under long-term continuous cropping. This study probed into the physicochemical properties, metabolites, and microbial diversity of tobacco rhizosphere soils cropped continuously for 0, 5, and 20 years. The relative abundance of bacterial genera associated with nutrient cycling (e.g., Sphingomonas) increased while potential plant pathogenic fungi and beneficial microorganisms showed synergistic increases with the duration of continuous cropping. Variations in soil pH, alkeline nitrogen (AN) content, and soil organic carbon (SOC) content drove the shifts in soil microbial composition. Metabolites such as palmitic acid, 3-hydroxypropionic acid, stearic acid, and hippuric acid may play a key role in soil acidification. Those results enhance our ability to predict shifts in soil microbial community structure associated with anthropogenic continuous cropping, which can have long-term implications for crop production.

The proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbial communities in industrial wastewater treatment plant treating N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) by AAO process.

The excessive use of antibiotics has resulted in the contamination of the environment with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing a significant threat to public health. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are known to be reservoirs of ARGs and considered to be hotspots for horizontal gene transfer (HGT) between bacterial communities. However, most studies focused on the distribution and dissemination of ARGs in hospital and urban WWTPs, and little is known about their fate in industrial WWTPs. In this study, collected the 15 wastewater samples containing N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) from five stages of the anaerobic anoxic aerobic (AAO) process in an industrial WWTPs. The findings revealed a stepwise decrease in DMF and chemical oxygen demand (COD) content with the progression of treatment. However, the number and abundances of ARGs increase in the effluents of biological treatments. Furthermore, the residues of DMF and the treatment process altered the structure of the bacterial community. The correlation analysis indicated that the shift in bacterial community structures might be the main driver for the dynamics change of ARGs. Interestingly, observed that the AAO process may acted as a microbial source and increased the total abundance of ARGs instead of attenuating it. Additionally, found that non-pathogenic bacteria had higher ARGs abundance than pathogenic bacteria in effluents. The study provides insights into the microbial community structure and the mechanisms that drive the variation in ARGs abundance in industrial WWTPs.

The effects of litter input and increased precipitation on soil microbial communities in a temperate grassland.

Global warming has contributed to shifts in precipitation patterns and increased plant productivity, resulting in a significant increase in litter input into the soils. The enhanced litter input, combined with higher levels of precipitation, may potentially affect soil microbial communities. This study aims to investigate the effects of litter input and increased precipitation on soil microbial biomass, community structure, and diversity in a temperate meadow steppe in northeastern China. Different levels of litter input (0%, +30%, +60%) and increased precipitation (0%, +15%, +30%) were applied over a three-year period (2015-2017). The results showed that litter input significantly increased the biomass of bacteria and fungi without altering their diversity, as well as the ratio of bacterial to fungal biomass. Increased precipitation did not have a notable effect on the biomass and diversity of bacteria and fungi, but it did increase the fungal-to-bacterial biomass ratio. However, when litter input and increased precipitation interacted, bacterial diversity significantly increased while the fungal-to-bacterial biomass ratio remained unchanged. These findings indicate that the projected increases in litter and precipitation would have a substantial impact on soil microbial communities. In energy-and water-limited temperate grasslands, the additional litter inputs and increased precipitation contribute to enhanced nutrient and water availability, which in turn promotes microbial growth and leads to shifts in community structure and diversity.

Targeted remodeling of the human gut microbiome using Juemingzi (Senna seed extracts).

The genus Senna contains globally distributed plant species of which the leaves, roots, and seeds have multiple traditional medicinal and nutritional uses. Notable chemical compounds derived from Senna spp. include sennosides and emodin which have been tested for antimicrobial effects in addition to their known laxative functions. However, studies of the effects of the combined chemical components on intact human gut microbiome communities are lacking. This study evaluated the effects of Juemingzi (Senna sp.) extract on the human gut microbiome using SIFR® (Systemic Intestinal Fermentation Research) technology. After a 48-hour human fecal incubation, we measured total bacterial cell density and fermentation products including pH, gas production and concentrations of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The initial and post-incubation microbial community structure and functional potential were characterized using shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Juemingzi (Senna seed) extracts displayed strong, taxon-specific anti-microbial effects as indicated by significant reductions in cell density (40%) and intra-sample community diversity. Members of the Bacteroidota were nearly eliminated over the 48-hour incubation. While generally part of a healthy gut microbiome, specific species of Bacteroides can be pathogenic. The active persistence of the members of the Enterobacteriaceae and selected Actinomycetota despite the reduction in overall cell numbers was demonstrated by increased fermentative outputs including high concentrations of gas and acetate with correspondingly reduced pH. These large-scale shifts in microbial community structure indicate the need for further evaluation of dosages and potential administration with prebiotic or synbiotic supplements. Overall, the very specific effects of these extracts may offer the potential for targeted antimicrobial uses or as a tool in the targeted remodeling of the gut microbiome.

Notes from the past show how local variability can stymie urchins and the rise of the reds in the Gulf of Maine

AbstractThe impacts of global change—from shifts in climate to overfishing to land use change—can depend heavily on local abiotic context. Building an understanding of how to downscale global change scenarios to local impacts is often difficult, however, and requires historical data across large gradients of variability. Such data are often not available—particularly in peer reviewed or gray literature. However, these data can sometimes be gleaned from casual records of natural history—field notebooks, data sheet marginalia, course notes, and more. Here, we provide an example of one such approach for the Gulf of Maine, as we seek to understand how environmental context can influence local outcomes of region‐wide shifts in subtidal community structure. We explore a decade of hand‐drawn algal cover maps around Appledore Island made by Dr. Art Borror while teaching at the Shoals Marine Lab. Appledore's steep wave exposure gradient—from exposed to the open ocean to fully protected—provides a living laboratory to test interactions between global change and local conditions. We then recreate Borror's methods two and a half decades later. We show that overfishing‐driven urchin outbreaks in the 1980s were slowed or stopped by wave exposure and benthic topography. Similarly, local variation appears to have curtailed current invasions by filamentous red algae. Last, some formerly dominant kelps have disappeared over the past 40 years—an observation verified by subtidal surveys. Global change is altering life in the seas around us. While underutilized, solid natural history observations stand as a key resource for us to begin to understand how global change will translate to the heterogeneous mosaic of life in a future Gulf of Maine and other ecosystems around the world.

Carbon sequestration potential of biochar in soil from the perspective of organic carbon structural modification

Application of biochar derived from biomass resources in soil is an encouraging method to decelerate global warming via carbon sequestration. While there has been extensive research on the priming effect of biochar on the mineralization of native soil organic carbon (nSOC), its correlation with soil organic carbon (SOC) structural variations remains poorly understood. A series of incubation experiments with soils amended with biochar prepared at 300 °C, 450 °C, and 600 °C were performed to explore the shifts in nSOC structure and reveal the interconnections among soil properties, SOC structural variation, and the priming effect induced by biochar. Biochar exhibited an “inhibitory concentration” on soil microorganisms, where 1 % biochar enhanced bacterial and fungal richness and diversity, while 3 % biochar reduced bacterial richness and diversity although soil nutrient conditions were improved. Biochar-treated soil had higher humic acid- and humin-like fractions (HAL and HML) but lower fulvic acid-like components (FAL). Moreover, bulk SOC, FAL, HAL, and HML of soils with 300 °C and 450 °C biochar contained more aromatic-type species (e.g., lignin). Such changes were related to improvement of the soil nutrient condition and shifts in microbial community structures, in addition to the “accumulation of biochar-derived OC in the nSOC pool”. Stable carbon isotopes indicated that the inhibitory effect on SOC mineralization (−94.5 to −8.0 mg CO2-C kg−1 soil) induced by biochar was significantly explained by the change in FAL and HAL contents. The findings improved the understanding of the carbon sequestration potential of biochar in soils for SOC structural modification.

Understanding Salinity-Driven Modulation of Microbial Interactions: Rhizosphere versus Edaphic Microbiome Dynamics.

Soil salinization poses a global threat to terrestrial ecosystems. Soil microorganisms, crucial for maintaining ecosystem services, are sensitive to changes in soil structure and properties, particularly salinity. In this study, contrasting dynamics within the rhizosphere and bulk soil were focused on exploring the effects of heightened salinity on soil microbial communities, evaluating the influences shaping their composition in saline environments. This study observed a general decrease in bacterial alpha diversity with increasing salinity, along with shifts in community structure in terms of taxa relative abundance. The size and stability of bacterial co-occurrence networks declined under salt stress, indicating functional and resilience losses. An increased proportion of heterogeneous selection in bacterial community assembly suggested salinity's critical role in shaping bacterial communities. Stochasticity dominated fungal community assembly, suggesting their relatively lower sensitivity to soil salinity. However, bipartite network analysis revealed that fungi played a more significant role than bacteria in intensified microbial interactions in the rhizosphere under salinity stress compared to the bulk soil. Therefore, microbial cross-domain interactions might play a key role in bacterial resilience under salt stress in the rhizosphere.

Life in the PFAS lane: The impact of perfluoroalkyl substances on photosynthesis, cellular exudates, nutrient cycling, and composition of a marine microbial community

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are of great ecological concern, however, exploration of their impact on bacteria-phytoplankton consortia is limited. This study employed a bioassay approach to investigate the effect of unary exposures of increasing concentrations of PFAS (perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS)) on microbial communities from the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Each community was examined for changes in growth and photophysiology, exudate production and shifts in community structure (16S and 18S rRNA genes). 6:2 FTS did not alter the growth or health of phytoplankton communities, as there were no changes relative to the controls (no PFOS added). On the other hand, PFOS elicited significant phototoxicity (p < 0.05), altering PSII antennae size, lowering PSII connectivity, and decreasing photosynthetic efficiency over the incubation (four days). PFOS induced a cellular protective response, indicated by significant increases (p < 0.001) in the release of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) compared to the control. Eukaryotic communities (18S rRNA gene) changed substantially (p < 0.05) and to a greater extent than prokaryotic communities (16S rRNA gene) in PFOS treatments. Community shifts were concentration-dependent for eukaryotes, with the low treatment (5 mg/L PFOS) dominated by Coscinodiscophyceae (40 %), and the high treatment (30 mg/L PFOS) marked by a Trebouxiophyceae (50 %) dominance. Prokaryotic community shifts were not concentration dependent, as both treatment levels became depleted in Cyanobacteriia and were dominated by members of the Bacteroidia, Gammaproteobacteria, and Alphaproteobacteria classes. Further, PFOS significantly decreased (p < 0.05) the Shannon diversity and Pielou's evenness across treatments for eukaryotes, and in the low treatment (5 mg/L PFOS) for prokaryotes. These findings show that photophysiology was not impacted by 6:2 FTS but PFOS elicited toxicity that impacted photosynthesis, exudate release, and community composition. This research is crucial in understanding how PFOS impacts microbial communities.

Mechanisms of cadmium release from manganese-rich sediments driven by exogenous DOM and the role of microorganisms

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a crucial component of natural sediments that alters Cd sequestration. Nevertheless, how different types of DOM fuel Cd mobilization in Mn-rich sediments has not been elucidated. In the present study, four typical DOM, fluvic acid (FA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), sodium alginate (SA), and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), were used to amend Cd-contaminated sediment to study their effects on Cd/Mn biotransformation and microbial community response. The results demonstrated that different DOM drive microbial community shifts and enhance microbially mediated Mn oxide (MnO) reduction and Cd release. The amendment of terrestrial- and anthropogenic-derived DOM (FA and SDBS) mainly contributed to enriching Mn-reducing bacteria phylum Proteobacteria, and its abundance increased by 38.16–74.47 % and 56.41–73.98 %, respectively. Meanwhile, microbial-derived DOM (BSA and SA) mainly stimulated the abundances of metal(loid)-resistant bacteria phylum Firmicutes. Accompanied by microbial community structure, diversity, and co-occurrence network shifts, the DOM concentration and oxidation-reduction potential changed, resulting in enhanced Cd mobilization. Importantly, FA stimulated Cd release most remarkably, probably because of the decreased cooperative interactions between bacterial populations, stronger reduction of MnOs, and higher aromaticity and hydrophobicity of the sediment DOM after amendment. This study linked DOM types to functional microbial communities, and explored the potential roles of different DOM types in Cd biotransformation in lake sediments.

Body size modulates demographic patterns of top predators and their native and invasive prey: A biomathematical approach

The arrival of invasive species in native communities impacts the structure and functioning of ecosystems, and is considered a critical indicator of loss of biodiversity. Exploring the effects of new species in communities presents challenges addressable through theoretical ecology. Species body size not only shapes trophic relationships, but may also impact predator success and facilitate species coexistence. However, little attention has been paid to the effects of differences in species body size on interactions between native and invasive primary consumers, which could be relevant to their coexistence with higher-level predators. Our aim is to investigate demographic patterns using a dynamic, mechanistic model of two age-structured primary consumers (one invasive and one native) sharing a plant resource and preyed upon by a common predator. In our model, we highlight three crucial phenomena: the structuring of primary consumers into adults and juveniles, reproduction occurring in discrete pulses, and the seasonal addition of new individuals to the population. Hence, the success of one species over the other relies on its reproductive capacity to incorporate individuals in each reproductive cycle. Our simulations reveal that abundance patterns are influenced by body size, suggesting that changes in predator body size could serve as key indicators of shifts in community structure.
