Influence of width-to-depth and effective length-to-depth ratio on shear strength of reinforced concrete slender beams without shear reinforcement: comparative analysis

PurposeFrom the factors that affect shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, the study examines the effect of controversial parameters, width-to-depth (b/d) and effective length-to-depth (leff/d) ratio on shear strength of RC slender beams.Design/methodology/approachThe researchers utilized a database of 676 experimental test results from ACI-DAfStb database, Conducted regression analysis to examine relationship between b/d and leff/d ratios and shear strength, compare and analyze sensitivity to changes in b/d and leff/d ratios for the selected 12 shear models for RC beams.FindingsIncreasing b/d ratio enhanced shear strength until b/d ˜ 3, but further increases had limited impact and increasing leff/d ratio resulted in decreased shear strength. From comparative analysis, the models provided by various design standards were found to be safe, with EC-2 and JSCE models being conservative. From considered research models, Campione and Arslan models were conservative, while Kim and White model were observed to be unsafe. Sensitivity analysis indicated ACI318-19, JSCE, CEB-FIP-90 and Arslan models were sensitive to changes in b/d and leff/d ratios. National code models generally captured shear strength characteristics well. Certain models suggested a constant/decreasing b/d effect despite observed shear strength enhancement. Most models indicated improved shear strength with an increasing leff/d ratio, contrary to experimental findings while TS500 and Hwang models aligned with experimental results.Research limitations/implicationsThe study's limitations include the dependence on the available database, which may not encompass all possible experimental scenarios. Further research should aim to expand the database and investigate additional parameters that may influence shear strength in RC beams.Practical implicationsThe findings of this study have practical implications for the design and analysis of RC beams by suggesting that the width-to-depth and length-to-depth ratios should be carefully considered to optimize shear strength. The identified models can assist engineers in selecting appropriate shear strength prediction models based on specific design scenarios.Social implicationsThe study contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the field of reinforced concrete beam design, which has implications for the safety and reliability of structural systems. By understanding the factors influencing shear strength, engineers can design more efficient and robust structures, ensuring the safety of buildings and infrastructure.Originality/valueThis study provides valuable insights into the influence of the width-to-depth and effective length-to-depth ratios on shear strength in reinforced concrete beams. Expansive Soil Stabilization Using Steel Factory Dust

One of the geotechnical-engineering roles is soil stabilization, because it affects the long-term strength and functionality of structures. For suitability and durability of expansive soils for construction projects, shear strength, bearing capacity and other characteristics can be enhanced through the stabilization process. This study is focused on the effects of steel factory dust (SFD) as an additive on the improvement of the undesired geotechnical properties of expansive soil (CH soil). A series of laboratory tests were conducted on intact and treated samples. SFD was added by 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% to the dry soil. The conducted tests are consistency, specific-gravity, modified Proctor compaction, swelling-pressure and -percent and unconfined compression tests. The addition of SFD reduced the values of liquid and plastic limits, plasticity index, modulus of elasticity and allowable bearing capacity. Significantly, the 10% SFD addition significantly reduced swelling percent and pressure by 26.8% and 25.4%, respectively while notably increasing the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) from 475 MPa to 629 MPa. SFD was found to be a successful waste material in improving expansive soil by using 10% as the best addition percent, which usefully saves the environment. Laboratory Investigation of the Unsaturated Shear Strength Characteristics of Sand–Clay Mixtures

Sandy‐clay mixtures are commonly used in civil engineering projects, such as transportation and water resources, due to their unique construction properties. While the macromechanical characteristics of these mixtures under saturated conditions are well understood, their behavior in unsaturated states is still not fully elucidated. This study aims to investigate the mechanical behavior of sand–clay mixtures under unsaturated conditions by examining the influence of varying sand content and matric suction on their shear strength. The research includes unsaturated shear strength tests and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments to analyze the pore characteristics within the mixtures at different sand content levels. The correlation between changes in pore structure and shear strength is systematically analyzed. The unsaturated shear strength of the mixtures is predicted using the Fredlund shear strength formula and compared with the measured values. The results indicate that the unsaturated shear strength of the mixture decreases as the sand content increases but stabilizes once the sand content reaches 20%. Below 20% sand content, the changes in micropore distribution are not significant with increasing sand content. However, beyond 20% sand content, there is a noticeable increase in the ratio of large pores and a decrease in the proportion of small pores. The sand content of 20% represents a critical threshold for the strength and porosity variations in the mixture. Under constant matric suction, the unsaturated shear strength of the mixture improves with the increase in sand content. However, the predictive accuracy of the Fredlund shear strength formula gradually diminishes as the sand content increases.

Convenient Method for Large-Deformation Finite-Element Simulation of Submarine Landslides Considering Shear Softening and Rate Correlation Effects

Submarine landslides pose a serious threat to the safety of underwater engineering facilities. To evaluate the safety of undersea structures, it is important to estimate and analyze the sliding processes of potential submarine landslides. In this study, a convenient model for simulating submarine landslide processes is established by using Abaqus Eulerian large deformation technology with an explicit finite element framework. The VUSDFLD Fortran subroutine is used to consider the strain-softening and rate-dependency characteristics of soil shear strength. The proposed method is validated by comparing its results with experimental data and those of mainstream numerical methods. Then, the results of a dynamic analysis of typical potential submarine landslides in the Shenhu sea area are analyzed using the proposed method. Case studies are carried out under different soil shear strength distributions, and the influence of initial stress is also analyzed. The shear strain-softening and rate-dependency effects are highly involved in the runout process. The simulated landslide’s failure mode is consistent with the geophysical interpretation of existing landslide characteristics.

The Influence of Preconsolidation Pressure on Undrained Shear Strength Characteristics of Peaty Clay in Sri Lanka

This research study investigated the effect of preconsolidation pressure on the shear strength parameters of very soft peaty clay based on a series of laboratory tests. The study included 15 Consolidated Undrained (CU) triaxial tests on peaty clay extracted from the Nilwala river basin, with preconsolidation pressures ranging from 0 to 100 kPa in 20 kPa intervals and cell pressures of 50, 100 and 150 kPa. The results indicated that the peak deviator stress of peaty clay decreased with increasing preconsolidation pressure, indicating decrease in its shear strength parameters with preconsolidation pressure. It was observed that peaty clay is highly sensitive to disturbance and requires sufficient time to regain its shear strength once its natural microstructure is altered. The study has significant implications for the construction of embankments on soft soils, particularly peaty clays. It highlights the need for accurate estimation of the undrained shear strength parameters of peaty clay, considering soil composition, structure and type of loading. It also emphasizes the importance of minimizing disturbance during construction activities to avoid compromising the stability of embankments.

Effect of Grain Size Distribution on Shear Strength Characteristic of Random Fill Material at Keureuto Dam, Indonesia

Earth-fill dams are commonly constructed by composing different geomaterials to optimally utilize local natural resources. In Indonesia, random fill materials are frequently used as a major composition in dam construction. The term random fill material originated from its broad range of grain size. Grain size distribution influences shear strength characteristics of geomaterials. There are 2 shear strength equations to model the behavior of fill material, i.e., linear Mohr-Coulomb and non-linear power curve. Two series of large scale in situ direct shear tests were performed at Keureuto Dam, Indonesia. Sieve analysis tests were performed accordingly. The random fill material was composed of cobbles, gravel, and less than 25% of sand. The stress-displacement characteristics of random fill material indicated that plastic deformation occurred at shear strain of 1% to 4%. The shear failure was reached in shear displacements of 60 – 90 mm, equivalent to shear strain of 8% – 12 %. Stress-strain relationships showed a dilative behavior indicating the random fill was in a relatively dense form. The dilatancy tends to decrease as the normal stress increases. The linear Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria and non-linear power curve equation are suggested to characterize the shear strength of the random fill material. To obtain a realistic value of the non-cohesive strength parameter of granular material, the Mohr-Coulomb approach should be intercepted at zero. A relationship between secant friction angles for different normal stresses is presented. This angle tends to decrease at higher normal stresses.

Efficiency evaluation of a commercial superficial strengthening system applied to AAC-block walls under diagonal compression

The article presents the influence of a superficial strengthening system on the behaviour of AAC-block walls with thin bed joints and unfilled head joints. The strengthening system consisted of a high-strength fibreglass mesh applied to both wall surfaces with a mineral mortar reinforced with fibreglass. A series of strengthened and unstrengthened specimens was tested under diagonal compression according to ASTM E519-15 to determine their shear strength and stress-strain characteristics. The use of optical strain measurement made it possible to identify the failure mode for both types of the tested walls. The strengthening system changed the wall failure development, which was initiated by unfilled head joints in both cases. The application of the strengthening system on both wall surfaces improved the strength properties of the wall significantly. The load-bearing capacity of the specimens increased by nearly 90% and cracking of the walls occurred at loads about 50% higher compared to specimens with no superficial strengthening. The strengthened specimens exhibited a ductile behaviour after reaching the maximum bearing capacity. A simplified method for computing the cracking load and maximum load was also proposed, the results of which are consistent with the tests results.

Large Triaxial tests on Marginal soil admixed with Randomly Distributed with coir fiber and fly ash

The Due to a lack of suitable granular soils, it has become necessary for various construction types to use marginal soils (soils of lower strength) at various work sites. Typically, soil with higher percentages of silt and clay (finer particles) exhibits unfavourable engineering characteristics, making it unsuitable for a variety of construction-related operations. These soils are typically possessing plasticity in nature and have low strength, especially when it comes to shear strength. Common approaches like admixture stabilisation are being implemented to enhance the strength characteristics of these soils. The quality of these marginal soils to make them amenable for construction is also being improved by the chemical additives. By adopting such procedures that involve chemical admixing for the process of modifying marginal soils, the cost of construction process rises. In this work, an effort was undertaken with regard to examine the efficacy of modifying marginal soil admixing with cement/lime and with dispersed randomly with coir fibre as reinforcing material. Additionally, shear testing was carried out by admixing fly ash. The objective of the present work is to investigate the shear strength characteristics modified marginal soil and could be affected by the reinforcement of coir fibres. Using the proposed marginal soil, a number of significant triaxial laboratory works were carried out. The experimental study is intended to provide a workable answer for increasing the shear strength of marginal soil. It was observed that the shear strength of marginal soil modified/admixed with ordinary Portland cement and reinforced with random distribution of 2 percent coir fibre and admixed with 10 percent fly ash was roughly one and half to two times that of plain marginal soil.

Effect of matrix suction on the shear strength characteristics of reinforced granite residual soil

Introduction: The soil in geogrid-reinforced structures is typically unsaturated, with the shear strength provided by both the matrix suction and the reinforced body. Traditional structural designs for saturated soils only consider the shear strength provided by the reinforced body, neglecting the part provided by matrix suction. As a result, the design for reinforced structures is biased toward conservatism.Method: The study examined the matrix suction-provided shear strength in reinforced soils through strain-controlled triaxial and soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) pressure plate instrumentation. The feasibility of the Schrefler and Khalili unsaturated soil shear strength formulas for predicting shear strength based on matrix suction forces was verified.Results: The study revealed that the cohesion of saturated reinforced soil exhibits a significant decrease in contrast with unsaturated reinforced soil, with matrix suction serving as a crucial consideration for reinforced structure design.Discussion: The experimental results confirm the suitability of applying the quasi-cohesion increment theory to reinforced clays. The Khalili formula can be utilized to predict the quasi cohesion of unsaturated reinforced soils with greater accuracy under diverse dry density conditions. The results obtained using post-shear moisture content were closer to the measured values than those using initial moisture content.

Shear strength degradation of gas hydrate-bearing sediment due to partial hydrate dissociation

Extraction of methane hydrate from subseafloor reservoir may potentially trigger seabed slides and induce subsidence. To address the problems, it is crucial to properly characterize the phase equilibrium condition of pore hydrate and the shear strength of the soil. As one of the key constitutive components, the phase equilibrium condition enforces a constraint over pore gas pressure, temperature and unhydrated water content. Such a constraint, however, has been traditionally ignored in analyzing the mechanical behavior of hydrate-bearing soil. In this paper, a series of stepwise hydrate dissociation tests was performed, and the phase equilibrium condition of pore hydrate was determined, providing an effective way to evaluate the unhydrated water content during hydrate dissociation. Meanwhile, a series of direct shear tests was also conducted to explore the shear strength characteristics of the soil. It is shown that the shear strength of the hydrate-bearing soil can be significantly influenced by pore gas pressure, unhydrated water content, hydrate saturation and several other factors. In particular, the measured shear strength depends upon the initial water content of the sample, pointing to a potential problem that the shear strength could be wrongly determined if not properly interpreted. A shear strength criterion, which enforces the equilibrium condition of pore hydrate, is developed for hydrate-bearing soil, establishing a link between the equilibrium condition and the shear strength. The proposed equation describes well the shear strength characteristics of hydrate-bearing soils, remarkably unifying the effects of pore pressure, temperature, water content and hydrate saturation.

The methods used in this research involve field geotechnical data collection, laboratory testing to determine geotechnical parameters, and numerical modeling to analyze slope stability. The research results indicate that the shear strength of landslide materials is a crucial factor in evaluating slope stability. Variations in geotechnical properties of materials, such as water content, soil texture, and density, have a significant impact on shear strength and the potential for landslides. Additionally, numerical analysis shows that environmental factors, such as rainfall and human activities, can also influence slope stability. This research provides a better understanding of the relationship between shear strength characteristics of materials and slope stability, serving as a basis for the development of landslide risk mitigation strategies. This has important implications for disaster management and safe land use planning in landslide-prone areas.

The Influence of Different Shear Directions on the Shear Resistance Characteristics of Rock Joints

The joint roughness coefficient JRC of rock joints is an important parameter for measuring the geometric morphology of rock joints. However, the parameter obtained from traditional calculation methods has certain limitations in reflecting the differences in shear strength of rock joints in different shear directions with the same orientation. Firstly, native joint surface test blocks were cast using three-dimensional reverse reconstruction technology. Subsequently, direct shear tests were conducted under different normal stress and shear direction conditions, followed by numerical simulations using the finite difference software Flac3d. The JRC coefficient calculation method proposed by Yuan was modified and extended by considering the percentage of climbing sections and the effective contact area during the ramping process. This study indicates that the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the shear test results. The introduction of the shear climbing rate SCR and the curvature coefficient of profile CCP is used to reflect the geometric differences of the joint surfaces in different shear directions. These two parameters are nonlinearly fitted with the experimental results, leading to a calculation formula that characterizes the shear strength characteristics of the joint surfaces in different shear directions. This novel formula is an extension of the JRC–JCS model.

Reliability of Methods for Determination of Stress History Parameters in Soils

Abstract Stress history acquired by any cohesive soil influences, to a large extent, three groups of fundamental properties indispensable in geotechnical design i.e. state of soil, shear strength, and stiffness characteristics. The basic stress history parameter (from which other parameters are derived) determined directly from laboratory tests is a preconsolidation stress σ′ p. Since the first method proposed by Casagrande in 1936, value σ′ p is determined in the oedometer test as a border between overconsolidated (OC) and normally consolidated (NC) zones. Approach based on division between predominantly elastic, (recoverable) strain, and plastic (irrecoverable) strain is a main principle of several methods of σ′ p determination, which have been proposed over the past eighty-six years. Accumulated experiences have revealed that any laboratory procedure based on the oedometer test does not provide realistic value of preconsolidation stress, especially in heavy preconsolidated soils. The major reason for that results from the fact that the mechanism responsible for natural overconsolidation is more complicated than mechanical preloading. Therefore, there is a necessity to reevaluate effectiveness of standard methods and look for another solution of evaluation yield stress σ′ Y in natural soils. This article presents the comparison between σ′ Y determined for various soils with use of standard methods based on conventional oedometer test and yield stress determined on the basis of alternative procedures. The latter are represented by various approaches as e.g. based on SHANSEP procedure or initial shear modulus and others. The most promising among these alternative methods is a new concept based on dilatancy phenomenon that takes place during shearing of a dense soil. The parameter reflecting stress history is derived from pore pressure response and is based on characteristic values of Skempton's parameter A record. Consistency of data concerning stress history parameters profile obtained for deep subsoil on the basis of various methods is shown for comparison.

Direct shear setup for studying the THM shear response of the soil-structure interface in the context of energy geostructures

Developing pathways for climate-resilient development involves integrating mitigation and adaptation actions, ensuring sustainable development [1]. A climate-resilient development can be achieved through the inclusion of effective mitigation approaches into development planning, reducing vulnerability, conserving ecosystems, and restoring ecosystems [1]. In this regard, energy geostructures are introduced as an effective mitigating approach, providing renewable energy while limiting the emission of greenhouse gases [2-4]. The operation of the system is closely linked to daily and seasonal cycles, which leads to cyclic temperature and water content fluctuations at the soil and the soil-structure interface [4, 5]. Thus, the study of the shear response of the soil–structure interface subjected to different thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) conditions is of importance. Testing techniques used to study the THM behaviour of unsaturated soils require advanced laboratory equipment, as well as protocols for correcting measured data due to errors in the test conditions and apparatus calibration. This paper presents the development of a new direct shear setup to measure the non-isothermal shear strength of the partially saturated soils and soil-structure interface. The modified setup, a unique one to the authors' knowledge, enables simultaneous control of temperature, matric suction, and mechanical stress state within the soil specimens. The operational temperature range of energy geostructures (i.e., 5°C to 50) is applied through a thermal plate, developed from corrosion-resistant stainless steel with high thermal conductivity, placed at the base of the soil specimen. Matric suction (i.e., in the range of 0 to 100 kPa) is controlled using the axis-translation technique and measured using a pressure transducer connected to the back of the top cap, incorporating the HAE disk, facilitating the measurement (Figure 1) [2, 4-6]. The direct shear setup is modified to accurately measure the shear strength and deformation characteristics of soil samples under controlled laboratory conditions. The design of the device is based on previous direct shear devices but includes several improvements to enhance its accuracy and ease of use [4, 5]. The device has been tested to measure the shear response of both soils and soil-structure interfaces, and the results were compared to those obtained using conventional direct shear devices [2, 4, 7-10]. The results indicate that the new device is accurate and reliable and represents a significant advancement in the field of soil testing.
 In this study, the interface is formed by kaolin clay, a temperature-sensitive clay, and concrete, a structural material widely used for energy geostructures [4, 11]. The soil samples were prepared by static compaction at 30% initial water content () and an initial void ratio () of 1.2. Initially, all samples were inundated with distilled water at room temperature (24°C) [4, 12], followed by sequential hydraulic (i.e., matric suction, = 0 or 70 kPa), mechanical (i.e., net normal load, =100 or 300 kPa), and thermal (i.e., temperature, =24°C or 45°C) loading of the interface. The shearing was initiated after ensuring equilibrium criteria were met. It was necessary to limit the shearing rate to 0.005mm/min and the thermal loading rate to 3°C/hr to maintain the drained condition [4, 13]. Additionally, the vertical displacements associated with hydraulic load were subjected to an equilibrium criterion of 0.025%/day strain rate [14]. As presented in Table 1, the results revealed that the apparent interface friction angle was not significantly affected by matric suction at varying temperatures, but a slight decrease has been observed upon heating at all matric suctions. The apparent adhesion increased in response to temperature increase/decrease, with a decreasing rate as suction increased, while the interface desaturation led to higher apparent adhesion at all temperatures, corresponding to peak and residual values. In interfaces subjected to identical normal stress and temperature but different matric suction values, the shear stress-shear displacement curves showed greater peak stress with increasing matric suction. Furthermore, despite the same net normal stress and matric suction, higher temperatures resulted in slightly lower peak shear stress and less contractive volume change behaviour at the interface. Non-isothermal volumetric behaviour and soil dilatancy play a significant role in governing the THM shear response of the interface [15].

Shear strength characteristics of basalt fiber-reinforced loess

Loess owns the characteristics of collapsibility, disintegration and solubility, which pose a challenge to engineering construction. To examine the shear strength of basalt fiber-reinforced (BFR) loess, consolidated undrained (CU) triaxial tests were conducted to explore the impacts of water content (w), fiber length (FL), fiber content (FC) and cell pressure (σ3) on the shear strength. According to the results, the shear strength model was established taken into account the impacts of FL, FC, and fiber diameter (d). The results showed that the peak strength of BFR soils enhanced as FL, FC, and σ3 increasing, whereas it decreased with increasing of w. Compared to unreinforced soil, the peak strength of BFR loess improved 64.60% when FC was 0.2% and FL was 16 mm. The optimum reinforcement condition for experimental loess was that of FL was 16 mm and FC was 0.8%. The reinforcing mechanism of fibers was divided into a single tensile effect and spatial mesh effect. The experimental and calculated results agreed well, which suggested the model is suitable for predicting the shear strength of BFR loess. The research results can offer a guideline for the application of BFR loess in the subgrade and slope engineering.

PET waste management in Pakistan through use of PET shreds as additive in backfill soil.

The management of waste plastic bottles is one of the major environmental challenges in the world. Plastic bottles are composed of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is non-biodegradable, resulting in environmental problems. Various studies have been carried out on the use of waste PET bottles in the form of custom-made strips as a stabilizer. However, no significant research has been carried out on the use of waste PET bottle shreds already available in the market. These shreds do not require any special technology or arrangement for bulk production. In this study, the shear strength of low plastic silty clay was improved using locally available PET shreds, and their prospective application in the backfill soil was investigated. Standard Proctor tests and direct shear tests were conducted on soil stabilized with three different sizes of plastic shreds (2mm, 6mm, and 10mm) in four different percentages (1%, 3%, 5%, and 10%). Findings revealed that adding PET shreds in 1% content improves the shear strength characteristics. However, the shear strength parameters decrease with further increase in PET shred content. Therefore, PET shreds in 1% content can be added in backfill soil to improve its shear strength. Pakistan needs to construct 0.77 million housing units annually to keep up with its population growth. The statistics of seven major cities of Pakistan show that the PET waste management issue of Pakistan can be resolved by using PET shreds as a backfill additive in only 32% of the new houses required to be constructed.

Effect of surcharge loads during curing of lime-stabilised Cochin marine clay

Marine clays possess poor engineering properties and need to be improved prior to any construction activities. Lime stabilisation is a widely adopted method of chemical stabilisation for such types of soils. This paper evaluates the effect of surcharge loads during curing of lime stabilisation of Cochin marine clays. In the case of lime-stabilised soil cured under surcharge loads, it is necessary to consider two processes – that is, cementation and consolidation—along which the structures of stabilised soils evolve. These two processes are interrelated and cannot be considered separately, especially in the early stages of curing when significant structural changes occur. This study investigated the strength and deformation characteristics of lime-stabilised Cochin marine clay subjected to surcharge loading during curing. The marine clay with 6% lime was subjected to surcharge loads of 20, 40 and 60 kPa for different curing periods up to 180 days. The effects of surcharge loading on shear strength and compressibility characteristics were evaluated at different curing periods.

Hybrid mechanical and data-driven probabilistic model for shear strength of RC beam-column joints

In order to overcome the limitations of traditional data-driven or mechanics-based methods, a novel hybrid mechanical and data-driven probabilistic model for the shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column joints was proposed based on the modified Gaussian process (GP). A new mean function for the GP was developed first by considering the mechanical mechanisms of joint shear strength to improve the prediction accuracy and generalization ability. Then a hybrid mechanical and data-driven probabilistic model (HMDPM) for the joint shear strength was established based on the modified GP. Moreover, the hyper-parameters of the prior mean and covariance functions of the HMDPM were jointly optimized by maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). Finally, the HMDPM was compared with traditional GPs and mechanics-based methods by using 137 sets of test data. Comparisons show that the proposed model is less sensitive to training data sizes and has superior extrapolation ability for out-of-distribution predictions as compared to traditional GPs. In addition, the proposed model not only has satisfactory prediction performance, but can also reasonably describe the probabilistic characteristics of joint shear strength compared with traditional mechanics-based methods. Comparisons demonstrate that the proposed model has high prediction accuracy, robustness and generalizability, which provides an alternative approach to predicting joint shear strength.
