Reversed-phase and soap thin-layer chromatography of aliphatic mono- and polyamines

The chromatographic behaviour of 25 aliphatic mono- and polyamines has been investigated on layers of silanized silica gel alone and impregnated with anionic and cationic detergents. The influence of the percentage of detergent and of the apparent pH of the eluent on the retention mechanism has been studied. Ion exchange and/or partition contribute to the retention of the amines. Many separations of mono- and polyamine mixtures have also been carried out by two-dimensional technique.

Separation of carbohydrates on a new polar bonded phase material

The separation of a number of carbohydrates on Partisil-10 PAC, a 10-μm silica gel with a permanently bonded polar phase, is described. The basic mobile phase is acetonitrile-water, but various acids or salts may be added to the aqueous portion to change the selectivity of the separation. A study of the effect of H 3PO 4, HCl, HCLO 4, KH 2PO 4, and sodium acetate on the separation of mono-, di-, and trisaccharides is discussed and chromatograms of several real sample solutions are shown.

The parameters affecting the separation and quantification of trimethylsilyl ethers of mono- and diglycerides have been investigated by gas-liquid chromatography with QF-1 and SE-30 as stationary phases and a flame ionization detector. Results have been compared with those obtained earlier for triglycerides. The isothermal characteristics of a range of trimethylsilyl ethers of mono- and diglycerides on both stationary phases showed that log retention volume was directly proportional to carbon number and inversely proportional to absolute temperature. However, glyceride derivatives with lower carbon numbers deviated from these relationships. By using various rates of programmed temperature rise, we have determined the elution temperatures (Kelvin scale) of the mono- and diglyceride trimethylsilyl ethers relative to that of glycerol trilaurate. The "carbon equivalent of a trimethylsilyl group" is defined and shown to be useful in comparing the chromatographic properties of different glyceride classes. Weight and molar correction factors have been obtained and used to analyze diglycerides derived from egg and bovine brain lecithins.

Studies on mono- and di- n-butylphosphoric acids—I the separation of mono- and di- n-butylphosphoric acids by solvent extraction and by paper chromatography

The isolation of mono- and di- n-butylphosphoric acids from commercially available mixtures has been examined. A simple solvent extraction method based on the distribution of the acids between carbon tetrachloride-water, and diethylether-water, mixtures has been developed to obtain the individual acids with < 1 per cent of total (< 0·5 per cent acidic) impurities. A rapid paper chromatographic method of analysis is described which uses upward elution with a basic solvent mixture. The separated acids are then detected by spray reagents and the method allows approximately 0·5% v/v of each acid to be estimated visually in the presence of the other.
