Anterior rhinoscopy, radiographic examination of the nose and anterior rhinomanometry were performed in 150 patients with cleft palate. Normal values of nasal resistance were determined in 826 normal human subjects aged 3-85.1) Total nasal resistance was significantly higher in cleft palate patients than that in normal human suhjects.2) The cleft palate population has a high incidence of deviation of the nasal septum, hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate and sinusitis. It was thought that these pathological conditions raised total nasal resistance in cleft palate patients.3) About 50% of cleft palate patients had a sensation of nasal obstruction.4) The degree of sensation of nasal obstruction correlated well with the value of total nasal resjstance.5) The patients with high total nasal resistance had associated middle ear diseases more frequently than those with normal total nasal resistance.
