Philosophy for Children and the ‘whole child’

The notion of educating the ‘whole child’ invites suspicion because of the value-laden assumptions carried by such a goal. I argue that the intuitive appeal of the notion reflects the meaning of education but that the goal is also implicit in P4C in its respect for wholeness in content, rationale and practices whereby the learner is honoured and engaged. In this paper, I focus on the senior high school curriculum in which the rich resources of philosophy can speak to the broad range of students’ questions and concerns: intellectual, existential and social, addressing (and challenging) their ‘whole’ persons with its legacy of wisdom.

The study of preparation strategy of senior high school (SMA / MA) graduates in Pasuruan

Senior High School (SMA) is the formal education system of intermediate level after the junior secondary level that prepares graduates to continue their education to a higher level (college). In a policy perspective, senior high school (SMA) graduates are prepared to continue their education. Parents and the Junior High School (SMP) should prepare them comprehensively and independently. This study is intended to describe and analyze the various factors which become the references for educational success in senior high school (SMA/MA), such as the awareness of parents to determine the education of their children, the awareness of the students about the condition of a future which are full of challenges, the quality of education at the senior high school (SMA/MA) especially in strengthening educational character and the quality of workers as the need of workplace, including the role of government in addressing these conditions. The studies obtained from schools, namely accommodation and relevance of senior high school (SMA) curriculum development to the needs of workers in a good quality industry, the principal has a great commitment, availability of production units, partnerships with businesses and industries (DUDI), have a good simultaneous cooperation between vocational high school (SMK) and senior high school (SMA).

Adolescents attitude towards sex education; a study of senior high schools in Kumasi Metropolis

Morality of the young is of perennial concern to educators throughout the world. As a result numerous studies have been conducted and various suggestions have been made in order to educate the young people about their sexual functioning. The study was conducted specifically to find out about adolescents attitude towards sex education and their opinions on various sexual issues that are incumbent on development to adulthood sexuality. It was also to establish the need for sex education in schools. A descriptive design was used with a sample size for the study being 320 comprising respondents selected from form two students in eight senior secondary schools in Kumasi Metropolis. The schools were obtained from a stratified, purposive and random sampling. The research revealed a number of findings in respect of the adolescents‘ opinions about the sexual issues involved in their growth to adulthood. These findings which have significant implications are summarised below. Respondents were overwhelmingly in support of the view that sex education should be introduced in the senior high school curriculum. It was also evident that sex education can be improved in the SHSs by establishing counselling centres and also by forming virgin clubs in the schools.

A Decisionmaking Approach to Nuclear Education

This chronicle describes a senior high school curriculum that addresses four areas: personal values as a basis for political views, technological aspects of the nuclear arms race, the history of the nuclear arms race, and action for social change. An Integrated Human Service Program for Teenage Mothers and Their Children

[ Abstract: There have been various programs specially designed to help school age mothers and pregnant teenagers in the United States. The most frequent unmet needs of such special programs have been sacial services, health care, and day care for the mothers and their children. Cantinuing Education for Young Women (CEYW) in Michigan provides all of these essential services plus edu cation which meets credit requirements of the regular junior and senior high school curriculum. The public school system has assumed the responsibility of delivering compre hensive service to young mothers and their children. The paper describes the current operation and developments of Michigan' multi-faceted package of service plus education modalities provided within a single program framework. Social work is an integral part of this comprehen sive program. In particular, the inclusion of a well-organized child care pro gram into the public school setting is considered as a significant development in this area of human service. It appears from the literature and the author's communications with inter national social and health problem specialists that the experience of the Michi gan program has potential applicability to similar efforts elsewhere.]

The Permutations Triangle

During the past few years it has become popular to explore Pascal's triangle by a discovery approach similar to that which George Polya presents in Mathematical Discovery (1960), especially pages 70-73 and 83-84. (The Bibliography at the end of this article will give other references indicating the rich variety of relationships found in this triangle.) The simple beauty of these relationships can be used to experience the joy of discovery and at the same time learn an ever more general method of problem solving. Some teachers have already begun incorporating such material into the high school curriculum, and I believe this practice should be increased because of its motivational value. Furthermore, the student who has derived enjoyment and profit from discovering the relationships of Pascal's triangle needs an opportunity to expand his work in this area. This article presents what I believe to be a natural extension suitable to the senior high school curriculum.
