ASSESSMENT OF WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION IN SELF-HELP COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN REMO DIVISION OF OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

Community development constitutes a part of the overall development strategy in many nations. Over the years, women self-help efforts have been relegated to the background most especially in Nigeria. The study assessed women’s participation in self-help community development projects in Remo division of Ogun State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was used for selecting total sample size of 234 respondents. Data were collected on respondents’ socio-economic characteristics, types of self-help community development projects, reasons for their participation, and constraints limiting their participation. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency count, percentage and mean) and inferential statistics (chi-square and Spearman rho) at P≤0.05 level of significance. Results revealed that majority of the respondents (59.4%) were below 50 years of age. Majority (81.6%) of the respondents were married, educated (23.9%) up to post-secondary level. Humanitarian service 1.97), betterment of the community 1.92) were some of the reasons for women self-help efforts. The level of participation of the respondents was high with a score of (51.3%). Test of hypothesis revealed that significant relationship existed between participation in self-help development project and age (c2 = 39.740), marital status (c2 = 9.132), religion (c2 = 13.852), educational attainment (c2 = 11.087), possession of landed properties (c2 = 20.602). It was recommended that Individuals and NGOs should be encouraged to be of help to women, women associations, rural communities through execution of rural development project which has direct influence on women health status.

APPRAISING THE LEVEL OF YOUTHS’ INVOLVEMENT IN SELF-HELP COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN SOKOTO NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, SOKOTO STATE

Self help Community Development projects are basic requirements by any settlement for its effective and proper functioning and vital for the overall development of the community. This paper intends to appraise the level of youth involvement in self-help community Development Projects in Sokoto North local Government area and the problems militating against the performance of youths’ involvement in self-help community development projects. The research uses survey method of data collection which has been conducted in the Sokoto North local Government Area. A sample of 100 youths ‘was used using Simple random sampling method. The following research questions guided the study: What are the self-help communities Development Projects undertaken by the youth in Sokoto North local government area? What are the areas of youth involvement in Self-help Community development projects in Sokoto North Local government area? And what are the problems against the performance of youth’s involvement in Self-help community development projects in Sokoto North local government area? An instrument used for this study was structure questionnaire which was validated by experts from the faculty of education and extension services, department of Adult education and extension services Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. For it consistency I have pilot tested Sokoto South local Government area. The research used descriptive method of data analysis in form of percentage. The research finds out that the youth in Sokoto North local Government area undertakes six major self-help community development projects which are construction of drainage, culvert excavation, construction of mosque, and construction of slop among others. The research also finds out that the problem associated with community development efforts in the area are financial constraints, lack of educational enlightment, and lack of cooperation and mismanagement of project fund among others. The research recommends that there should be improve funding and support from government and related agencies in order to enhance activities of youth’s in Self-help Community Development Projects in the area. Also there should be educational enlightenment for youth to participate in the self-help community Development Projects. Finally youth’s should be made to understand the benefit of Self-help Community Development Projects.

Youths Involvement in Self-Help Community Development Projects (SHCDPs) in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria

<p>In developing countries like Nigeria, every citizen has the right to be involved in any development activities that is targeted at meeting the “felt needs” of their community rather than wait endlessly for government intervention. Self-help community development activities like construction and maintenance of community roads and rural electrification among others, are expected to be facilitated by all the stakeholders in the community, including the youths who are legitimately the future custodian of the welfare of their community and the greatest investment that can be utilized to mobilize local material resources for the community as well as the country’s development. This study therefore poses that, if youths are recognized as clear assets in self-help community development projects, the youths with their wealth of experiences and energy can be engaged effectively in meaningful tasks for the improvement of their environment. Thus, the issue of youth migration or abandonment of projects can also be ameliorated. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected on self-help projects embarked on in the communities studied, areas of youths involvement in self-help projects and the constraints encountered by youths. Findings of the study revealed that the Nsukka communities studied embarked on rural electrification, construction of boreholes and water drainage facilities among others; the areas of youths involvement in self help community projects was low; while youths not given free hands to be involved in SHCPs and parents not allowing their youths to be involved in SHCPs among others, were constraints to youths involvement in self help community projects. Recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.</p>

The Evolution of “August Meeting” among the Igbo Women of Southeastern Nigeria

The month of August every year witnesses a massive homecoming from different towns and cities across the world of “Igbo women” groups to their matrimonial rural hometowns, where they unite with their rural-based colleagues for what is now popularly known as the “August Meeting.” These “mothers’ congresses,” as they truly are, were originally often geared towards self-help rural community development, but have in recent times delved into conflict management, peace-building and human development in rural societies. But, what is the history of the “August Meeting” initiative among Igbo women? How different is it from the two “traditional” women’s groups among the Igbo? How independent is this assemblage from men’s influences and patronage, especially in a patriarchal society like the Igbos’? This article reconstructs the evolution of the “August Meeting” among women in the Igbo society. It develops a comprehensive view of the agency of women’s participation therein, by focusing on their grassroots initiatives and the crucial roles they play in societal development.

The Effect of Self-Help Community Development Programs on Rural County Development in Arkansas

In spite of the fact that extensive resources were committed to community resource development programs during the late 1950s and through the 1960s, virtually no evaluative information exists about the accomplishments of community development programs. Major commitments were made to community resource development in Arkansas. Using secondary data derived from administrative reports and from various census sources, an evaluation of these programs was performed for the periods from 1960 to 1970 and 1970 to 1980. The 73 nonmetropolitan counties of Arkansas were the units of analysis, and the evaluation focused upon the impacts that the programs had upon net migration of youth, unemployment, employment in retail and wholesale trade and in manufacturing. Regression analysis was used and two basic analytic models were employed. Evaluation research in community development: Increasing institutionalization of community development is reflected particularly by the Development of Black Communities Bill (to be promulgated during 1984) and the National Strategy for Community Development in South Africa (1983). This trend may effect a loss of spontaneity and flexibility in the community development movement.
