Can online transportation support low carbon?

The existence of online transportation is one of the alternative priority modes in transportation. Online transportation has the concept of car sharing, mainly by the uses of vehicles together. The function of car-sharing is expected to reduce the number of vehicles use. Through the concept of car sharing, it can help to realize the concept of a low-carbon city. In previous studies, people prefer to choose private cars than public transportation, because of their easiness in mobility and short travel time. Online Transportation is also efficient same as private vehicles, regarding mobility and travel time. Thus, Online Transportation is expected to reduce the usage of private vehicles and create more environmentally friendly. Based on this phenomenon, researchers want to explore the purpose of the preference for online transportation. The result finds out that the variables could influence the choices of online transportation. This research was conducted using the utility of transportation mode selection model.

Pengaruh Karakteristik Penumpang Pesawat Terhadap Peluang Pemilihan Moda Menuju Bandara Baru Kulonprogo

The growth of air passengers impacted not only on the addition of fleets number and flight routes, but also on the provision of airports and facilities. Airport facilities are not only about terminal space and air-side facilities, but also related to the provision of intermodal facilities to and from the airport. In Indonesia, some airports have increased number of passengers, and some of them decided to move the old airport to a new location. Adi Sutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta plans to move its location to Kulonprogo district which is still in Yogyakarta province. The existence of a new location in Kulonprogo will affect on the selection of transportation modes. On the other hand, the mode choice goes to the new airport are not just overcome, but there are some characteristics factor from the passengers which are influence it . The passengers characteristics are the distance, kind of jobs, the monthly income, private vehicle ownership, the age level and the genders of passengers. The analytical techniques in this study are quantitative descriptive with clustering based on certain criteria using cross tabulation techniques. This study was carried out by giving a questionnaire on air passengers in Adi Sutjipto airport to gain an understanding of their characteristics and their selection of modes transport used when the new airport will be operate. The result of the research is the existence of relationship between characteristics of air passengers with the selection of modes transport to the new airport. Preference for the modes selection to new airport can be taken into consideration in decision-making related to the development of inter-mode facilities to the new airport in Kulonprogo in the future.

Multi-Objective Optimization of Green Supply Chain Network Designs for Transportation Mode Selection

This research considers both cost and environmental protection to design a multi-objective optimization model. With multi-period customer demands, the model can solve a multi-plant resource allocation and production planning problem by focusing the decisions on supplier selection, facility selection, production batches, transportation mode selection, and distribution of the materials and commodities of a green supply network. In this paper, four transportation modes—namely, road, rail, air, and sea—have their corresponding transportation time, cost, and CO2 emissions. Based on multiple planning periods, this research calculates the minimal total cost and total CO2 emissions based on production and transportation capacity. Using numerical analyses, the results show that, when the budget is sufficient, only production capabilities with α = 1.5 and 2.0 are beneficial for improving environmental protection; carbon dioxide emissions of both production capacities are not significant differences. Furthermore, when the production batch size increases, total cost increases. Regarding transportation capacity, the results show that, when the budget is sufficient, increasing transportation quantity limits will be slightly beneficial for improving environmental protection.

The role of environmental sustainability in the freight transport mode choice

PurposeTransport is the European Union (EU) sector that produces the second highest amount of greenhouse gas emissions. In its attempts to promote the environmentally sustainable development of transport, the EU has focussed on intermodal transport in particular – but with limited success. It is important to understand how freight transport is selected, which criteria are used and what role environmental sustainability and intermodal transport play in the selection. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to focus on the role of environmental sustainability and intermodal transport in transport mode decisions. The authors look at this issue from the perspective of logistics service providers (LSPs) and buyers, as they are important stakeholders in guiding this process.Design/methodology/approachTo gain a holistic view of the current state of research, the authors have conducted a systematic literature review of the role of environmental sustainability and intermodal transport in transport mode decisions. The authors have further examined the findings concerning requests for quotations (RfQs), tenders and transport contracts, as these are also linked to decisions on transport choice.FindingsThe findings from the literature review include the results of descriptive and structured content analysis of the selected articles. They show that the discussion on environmental sustainability and intermodal transport as a sustainable mode, together with the transport mode selection criteria, RfQs/tenders and transport contracts, is still a rather new and emerging topic in the literature. The main focus related to the selection of transport mode has been on utility and cost efficiency, and only recently have issues such as environmental sustainability and intermodal transport started to gain greater attention. The findings also indicate that the theoretical lenses most typically used have been preference models and total cost theories, although the theoretical base has recently become more diversified.Research limitations/implicationsThere is still a need to extend the theoretical and methodological base, which could then lead to innovative theory building and testing. Such diverse application of methodologies will help in understanding how environmental sustainability can be better linked to mode choice decisions.Practical implicationsThe findings will be of interest to policy makers and companies opting for environmentally sustainable transport solutions.Social implicationsIf the EU, shippers and LSPs take a more active stance in promoting environmentally sustainable transformation models, this will have long-lasting societal impacts.Originality/valueIt seems that this systematic literature review of the topic is one of the first such attempts in the current body of literature.

Selection of coal transportation mode from the open pit mine to the thermic power plant using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process

Coal produced in open pit mines should be moved to thermic power plants for production of power. Thermic power plants require very large amounts of coal. In transportation process of this coal, both costs and technical parameters should be considered. Common alternative transportation modes in this process are belt conveyors, truck types, suspension rail conveying systems, pipelines and railways. Selection of one of these modes is influenced by transportation distance, inclination of the haulage road, amount of coal reserve, investment costs, production capacity and unit production cost of the open pit mine. In this study, advantages and disadvantages of alternative transportation modes are analysed using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (F-AHP). The results revealed, belt conveyors and trucks transportation by are superior to others.

The Methodology of Selecting the Transport Mode for Companies on the Slovak Transport Market

AbstractTransport volume in the Slovak Republic is growing continuously every year. This rising trend is influenced by the development of car industry and its suppliers. Slovak republic has also a geographic strategy position in middle Europe from the side of transport corridors (east-west and north-south). The development of transport volume in freight transport depends on the transport and business processes between the European Union and China and it is an opportunity for Slovak republic to obtain transit transport flows.In the Slovak Republic, road transport has a dominant position in the transport market. The volume of road transport has gradually increased over the past years. The increase of road transport is reflected on the highways and speed roads in regions which have higher economic potential. The increase of rail transport as seen on the main rail corridors is not as significant as in road transport. Trade globalization also has an influence on the increase of transport volume in intermodal transport. Predicted increase in transport volume for this transport mode is from 2,3 mil ton per year at present to 8 mil ton in the year 2020. Selection of transport mode and carrier is an important aspect for logistic management, because companies (customers) want to reduce the number of carriers which they trade and they create the system of several key carriers. Bigger transport volume and more qualitative transport service give a possibility to reduce transport costs. This trend is positive for carriers too, because the carriers can focus only on the selected customers and provide more qualitative services.The paper is focused on the selection of transport mode based on the proposed methodology. The aims of the paper are, definition of criteria which directly influence the selection of transport modes, determination of criteria based on the subjectively methods, creation of process for the selection of transport modes and practical application of proposed methodology.

Study on The Optimization of Collection and Distribution System of Freight Hub Ports: Illustrated by The Case of Shanghai International Shipping Center, China

Abstract The development of world-class international shipping centers has proved that there isn’t a specific pattern for the development of the freight collection and distribution system. Measures should be taken to give a full play to integrated advantages by generally considering the layout of the collection and distribution system of the port and in the rear. This article, following closely the multi-center tendency of the hub port and the integrated development of regional ports in the improvement of the essential functions of international shipping, presents an initial idea on the construction of the optimization model for the collection and distribution system in which regional ports both cooperate and compete with each other. Establishing a model combining transportation mode selection and route selection would eventually realize the network flow distribution and derive the results for hub port selection made by the hinterland, i.e. the port-hinterland collection and distribution volume and the throughput of the port. Specification and verification of the generalized cost function plays a pivotal role in the improvement of the model. In accordance with the layout of ports for Shanghai international shipping center and based on the optimization model for the freight collection and distribution system of ports with minimized generalized cost, a series of generalized cost functions for road sections of various transportation forms including highway, waterway and railway as well as for transfer hubs were established, and major parameters were defined. The software STAN for freight analysis was used to accomplish the network equilibrium assignment for overall system and data concerning the annual throughput and distribution of major hub ports were thus obtained. The output and data analysis show that Shanghai international shipping center is gradually developing into a multi-center overseas transportation hub, that the overall service capacities for major hub ports have been enhanced and that though the proportion of waterway freight transportation is on the rise, the highway freight collection and distribution system still needs to expand the scope of the transportation organization.

Transportation by Multiple Mobile Manipulators in Unknown Environments With Obstacles

A novel approach to transport a large object by multiple mobile manipulators in unknown environments with obstacles is proposed in this paper. The main moving direction of the system as well as its width and the leading mobile manipulator are first assigned manually or obtained automatically according to the geometric layout of mobile manipulators. Then, three transportation modes, i.e., default mode, shrink mode, and incline mode, are defined based on constraints from the object and mobile manipulators. In default mode, mobile manipulators are distributed around the object to be transported with the initial geometric layout. Mobile manipulators in shrink mode are required to lie inside the boundaries of the object's outlined rectangle, whereas multiple mobile manipulators in incline mode endeavor to hold the object with an inclined angle. On this basis, a decision based on the multiscale passageway is proposed to facilitate the selection of best transportation mode and moving direction. The effectiveness of the approach is verified by simulations and experiments.

Demand-responsive public transportation re-scheduling for adjusting to the joint leisure activity demand

Abstract Fixed daily trips such as trips to work/school have fixed departure/arrival times and destination points. The recurrent nature of fixed activities facilitates individuals on making more well-informed decisions about the transport mode selection. On the contrary, selecting a transportation mode for non-recurrent leisure trips, which can account for up to 60% of trips in some cities (Transport for London, 2014), is a more complex task due to the fact that individuals have little knowledge about the alternative modal options. In this paper, we try to improve the operations of demand-responsive public transportation systems by increasing their service quality and their ridership related to joint-leisure-trips via timetable rescheduling. First, we model the public transport service re-scheduling problem considering operational regulations and the quality of service. Then, a sequential heuristic method is introduced for re-scheduling the timetables of demand-responsive public transport modes in near-real time and accommodating the joint leisure activity demand without deteriorating the quality of service. The public transport re-scheduling for increasing the joint leisure activity ridership was tested in a case study using user-generated data from social media in Stockholm and the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) data from Sweden focusing especially on central bus lines 1 and 4.

Model Pemilihan Moda Transportasi Laut pada Wilayah Geografis Kepulauan; Studi Kasus Rute Kota Kendari-Kabupaten Konawe Kepulauan Provinsi Sulawesi Tenggara

The connectivity between Kendari City and Konawe Kepulauan Regency has affected the development of both regions. The connectivity between those two regions consists only of sea transportation with two types of transportation mode. The purpose of this study is to observe the behavior of users of sea transportation mode and to analyze characteristics of users of wooden ships and ferries on the Kendari City - Konawe Kepulauan Regency route, based on the preferences of passengers on the variety of attraction of the two modes. In this study, the characteristic of the selection of the sea transportation modes influences the total of traffic in the connection of both regions. The research design of this study is a modeling approach using a binomial logit model and a sample of 90 respondents. The results show that travel cost accounts for the difference in model utility which influences the selection of sea transportation modes for the two regions. Based on the perception of users, for ferries the purpose of trip is mostly for work while for wooden ships the purpose is mostly social. The reasons for selecting wooden ships are a variety of time and trip frequency, whereas the reason for selecting ferries is the cost.

Intelligent System for Transportation Mode Selection in ASEAN Countries

Association of Southeast Asian Nations: ASEAN is an organization of ten countries in Southeast Asia consisting of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. One of the major purposes of Asean is to create the Asean Economic Community: AEC as an economic organization. The mission of the AEC is to develop a single market and develop production base to be stable prosperous, highly competitive and economically, integrated with effective facilitation for trade and investment including a free flow of goods, services, investment, skilled labors and capital . This paper focuses on investigating the constraint within the three major modes of transportation (Air Sea and Truck) and reviewing the major factor influenced mode selection of the trading organization in Asean countries. Whilst constraints and complexities exist particularly within different countries, products values, lead time, a lack of knowledge on the condition of each transportation mode of the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME). At the time for those requirements can result in business limitation and restrictions. The results of research will lead to the design of an intelligent transportation system program that will not only illustrate solution for the trading organization in Asean countries but also provide variable costing and accurate transit time as management tools for users.

Transportation decision tool for optimisation of integrated biomass flow with vehicle capacity constraints

In this paper, an improved mathematical model is proposed to solve the multi-echelon biomass supply chain synthesis problem, including processing hubs selection, biomass allocation design and transportation mode selection, with the consideration of vehicle capacity constraint (weight and volume). On top of that, carbon emission penalty is introduced in the model in order to evaluate the environmental impact in the supply chain. The entire problem is modelled through mixed integer non-linear programming with the aim of maximising the overall profit, at the same time ensuring the minimal CO2 emission. A comparative study between the model developed in the previous work (vehicle capacity constraint and environmental performance are not considered) and the current improved model is carried out to compare the reliability of the outcomes. Both models are illustrated by using a same case study in Johor, Malaysia. In order to fill the gap of lacking user-friendly decision-making tool for the transportation design in supply chain management, a novel graphical decision-making tool, called smart vehicle selection diagram is proposed in this paper. The diagrams are constructed based on the optimised results obtained from the formulated model. The user manual for the proposed decision-making tool is given in this paper. Besides, five sets of sensitivity analysis are conducted to identify the sensitivity of the assumed realistic factors (i.e. terrain profile, weather changes, traffic congestion, fuel price fluctuation and individual environmental preference) to the optimal results obtained from the proposed tools. This paper shows the potential of the proposed tools in providing rigid optimal solution for the proposed research problem. Finally, several potential future works is suggested in this paper to fill up some of the remaining research gaps.

Urban Transportation Vehicle Sustainability Assessment with a Comparative Study of Weighted Sum and Fuzzy Methods

AbstractSustainability assessment in transportation planning and selection of the best transportation mode among alternatives is a challenging process. The technological differences among conventional, hybrid, and alternative fuel vehicles and buses, the large number of variables in the sustainability assessment of transportation systems, and the subjective judgment of decision makers introduce uncertainty. The objective of this paper is thus twofold: (1) to demonstrate a sustainability framework that focuses specifically on vehicle characteristics and (2) to compare two multicriteria decision making (MCDM) methods in terms of ranking sustainability performance of transportation vehicles and applicability to selected indicators. The two most widely adopted MCDM methods for decision making were used, the weighted sum method for its simplicity and the fuzzy logic method for its ability to incorporate imprecise and vague information. Sustainable transportation and order quantity: insights from multiobjective optimization

This article applies multiobjective optimization to show how the tradeoffs between cost and carbon emissions may be obtained in the context of sustainable operations. We formulate a model where transportation mode selection and order quantity decisions are considered jointly. We derive structural properties of the model and develop several insights. First, we show that switching to a greener mode of transportation while continuing to optimize the total logistics costs function may lead to a dominated solution. Second, we prove that the modal shift occurs only under strong carbon emissions reduction requirements. Third, we show that the efficient frontier is non-convex and we analyze some implications. Finally, we analyze the impacts of an increase in truck capacity. The results are illustrated through an example of a French retailer.

Stochastic Pricing and Order Model with Transportation Mode Selection for Low-Carbon Retailers

More and more enterprises have begun to pay attention to their carbon footprint in the supply chain, of which transportation has become the second major source of carbon emissions. This paper aims to study both optimum pricing and order quantities, considering consumer demand and the selection of transportation modes by retailers, in terms of carbon emissions sensitivity and price sensitivity under the conditions of a cap-and-trade policy and uncertain market demand. Firstly, we analyze the effects of transportation mode (including transportation costs and transportation-induced carbon emissions), initial emissions allowances, carbon emissions trading price and consumer sensitivity to carbon emissions on the optimum decisions and profits of retailers. The results demonstrate that when consumers are less sensitive to price, the optimum retail price and the optimum order quantity of products are proportional to the transportation cost and transportation-induced carbon emissions of retailers per unit product, the carbon emissions trading price as well as consumer sensitivity to carbon emissions. However, when consumers are highly sensitive to price, the optimum order quantity of products is inversely proportional to the transportation costs and transportation-induced carbon emissions of retailers per unit product, the carbon emissions trading price and consumer sensitivity to carbon emissions. In addition, the optimum retail price of products is inversely proportional to consumer sensitivity to carbon emissions. We also find that retailers prefer a low-carbon transportation mode when the carbon emissions trading price is high. Meanwhile, the carbon emissions trading price influences the carbon emissions trading volume of retailers. These theoretical findings are further validated by some numerical analysis.

A fuzzy multi-criteria group decision making based on ranking interval type-2 fuzzy variables and an application to transportation mode selection problem

In this paper, we propose a fuzzy multi-criteria group decision-making method based on ranking interval type-2 fuzzy variables. First, we present a ranking method developed by relative preference index which we define using generalized credibility measure to rank interval type-2 fuzzy variables. Then, based on the proposed ranking method, we develop a new method to solve fuzzy multi-criteria group decision-making (FMCGDM) problems where linguistic ratings of the alternatives and the criteria weights are represented by interval type-2 fuzzy variables. The proposed FMCGDM method is applied to a transportation mode selection problem to find most preferable mode among available modes based on some selection criteria. The proposed method is simple in computation and important as it uses interval type-2 fuzzy variables which are more reasonable and sensible to represent linguistic terms rather than by type-1 fuzzy variables. A numerical experiment has been done to illustrate the proposed method.

Design of forward supply chains: Impact of a carbon emissions-sensitive demand

We explore the impacts of a carbon emissions-sensitive demand on decisions relative to the design of forward supply chains (facility location, supplier selection, production technology selection and transportation mode selection). We investigate the design of a forward SC where a set of input items (components) are purchased from a network of external suppliers and used to manufacture a finished product in one or multiple production facilities to fulfill the demand of one or multiple customers. The demand for the final product is an endogenous variable sensitive to carbon emissions per unit and it is also assumed to increase with a decrease in the per unit carbon emissions of the product. We consider the case of a single customer and extend the model to multiple customers. Based on numerical experiments conducted on a case study from the textile industry, we use the models to provide a series of insights that might be instrumental to firms and policy makers. For instance, results indicate that customers׳ environmental awareness may encourage companies to bring the area of production close to the area of consumption and to select local suppliers. It might even be optimal to dedicate a production facility to each customer in spite of the incurred additional costs. However, if the customers are very demanding (in terms of reducing carbon emissions) then the best strategy can be to design a supply chain with relatively high emissions level because satisfying customer requirements may be very expensive in this case. Furthermore, if the customers are willing to pay a higher price for the product then this can lead to reducing per unit emissions. Our results augment the research to the fields of design of forward and greener supply chains by modeling and experimenting an endogenous demand sensitive to carbon emissions.

Effects of carbon emission reduction policies on transportation mode selections with stochastic demand

We are witnessing more frequent extreme weather events due to the global warming. There is an urgent need for governments, industries, general public, and academics to take coordinated actions in order to tackle the challenges imposed by the climate change. It is essential to incorporate the environmental objective in the transportation mode selection problem as transportation is a main contributor to carbon emissions. With this in mind, our paper studies the retailer’s ordering and transportation mode selection problem using stochastic customer demand and investigates the optimal ordering and transportation mode selection decisions under different carbon emission reduction policies. Our analytical results reveal that there are some important transportation mode shifting thresholds under different carbon emissions reduction policies. These findings do not only help firms to make optimal decisions under different carbon emission reduction policies but also support policy makers to develop effective policies on carbon emissions reduction.
