Seagull Optimization Algorithm with Share Creation with an Image Encryption Scheme for Secure Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

Α Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) allows transmission, amid moving or stationary vehicles via wireless technology. Amongst several problems, safe transmission is the most important one in smart VANETs in 5G networks. Smart vehicles require integration with advanced road systems encompassing smart payment and traffic control systems. Numerous security mechanisms are used in VANETs to ensure safe communication. One such mechanism is cryptographic digital signatures based on encryption. This study introduces the new seagull optimization algorithm involving share creation with an image encryption scheme (SGOA-SCIES) for secure VANET transmissions. The goal of the SGOA-SCIES technique is to create a considerable number of shares and encrypt them to accomplish security. In the SGOA-SCIES technique, a Multiple Share Creation (MSC) scheme is employed to generate numerous share sets. For the share encryption process, the SGOA-SCIES technique engages the Fractional-Order Chaotic System (FOCS) approach to encrypt the generated shares. The optimal keys of the FOCS method can be chosen by the SGOA usage, which ameliorates the security level. The performance evaluation of the SGOA-SCIES method is examined on benchmark data. The simulations demonstrate the enhanced SGOA-SCIES methodology outcome and compare it with the ones of other existing systems and under the implementation of various measures.

Ensuring Security and Privacy in VANET: A Comprehensive Survey of Authentication Approaches

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) are revolutionizing intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and as a result, research on their security is becoming increasingly important. As the primary security concern for VANET, authentication security is still quite difficult to achieve. Consequently, the prior knowledge of VANET is covered in this survey before outlining the primary security concerns. To set itself apart from previous surveys, this study suggests security properties and challenges among VANET. Next, the essential and significant features of a secure VANET system, such as confidentiality and integrity of data, and the availability of network systems have been reported, the authenticity of nodes and messages, and the refusal to deny data once it has been transmitted is detailed. Later, it outlined the requirement of the ITS which makes the survey unique. More importantly, the report on the most recent developments in VANET concentrates on the authentication schemes that have been proposed recently. The security features and authentication resistance against attacks, along with the overhead and efficiency of these schemes, are thoroughly examined and contrasted. A detailed analysis of V2V, V2I, and V2X authentication is been reported. Various cryptographic schemes have been discussed along with some advanced techniques such as Blockchain and hybrid schemes. An overview of the integration of 5G/6G networks is documented. Applications of VANET have been discussed in detail along with some open challenges in VANET. In summary, this work reviews a few lessons learned and explores different possibilities for future research.

Blockchain with Quantum Mayfly Optimization-Based Clustering Scheme for Secure and Smart Transport Systems

Blockchain (BC) with a clustering scheme can be used to build secure and smart Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs), which provide improved data integrity, enhanced security, efficient resource allocation, and streamlined processes. This technology has revolutionized the transport industry by enabling safer, more efficient, and transparent transportation networks. Therefore, this paper concentrates on the design of a new Blockchain with a Quantum Mayfly Optimization-based Clustering Scheme for Secure and Smart Transport Systems (BQMFO-CSSTS) technique. The objective of the presented BQMFO-CSSTS technique is to build a secure VANET via a BC-based technology and clustering process. Moreover, the BQMFO-CSSTS technique initially uses a Quantum Mayfly Optimization (QMFO) system with a fitness function for the selection of cluster heads (CHs) and the cluster construction process. In addition, BC technology is used as trust infrastructure to provide trustworthy services to the user and protect the privacy of the CHs and cluster members (CMs). The proposed scheme leverages the decentralized and immutable nature of BC to establish trust and ensure the integrity of cluster formation in VANETs. Finally, the BQMFO-CSSTS technique uses trajectory similarity metrics to protect the integrity of the CMs against attacks. The simulation results of the BQMFO-CSSTS technique are validated using a series of measures. The comprehensive results reported the superior outcomes of the BQMFO-CSSTS method over other recent approaches, with the maximum throughput being 1644.52 kbps. Therefore, integration of BC technology provides a transparent and secure framework through which to manage cluster membership, data sharing, and trust establishment among vehicles.

PAS: Privacy-Preserving Authentication Scheme Based on SDN for VANETs

Privacy disclosure has become a key challenge in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Although IEEE, ERSI, etc. suggest that a pseudonym-based scheme is a solution, how to support pseudonym management and vehicle authentication is still an open issue. In this paper, a secure VANETs authentication scheme (PAS) is proposed, where software-defined network (SDN) is integrated as a suitable infrastructure to support anonymous authentication and pseudonym management, while removing the requirement for pseudonym certification in the dynamic VANETs environment. The security and performance analysis indicate that PAS is able protect the privacy of vehicles and has a high efficiency.

Blockchain Driven Metaheuristic Route Planning in Secure Vehicular Adhoc Networks

Nowadays, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) turn out to be a core portion of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs), that mainly focus on achieving continual Internet connectivity amongst vehicles on the road. The VANET was utilized to enhance driving safety and build an ITS in modern cities. Driving safety is a main portion of VANET, the privacy and security of these messages should be protected. In this aspect, this article presents a blockchain with sunflower optimization enabled route planning scheme (BCSFO-RPS) for secure VANET. The presented BCSFO-RPS model focuses on the identification of routes in such a way that vehicular communication is secure. In addition, the BCSFO-RPS model employs SFO algorithm with a fitness function for effectual identification of routes. Besides, the proposed BCSFO-RPS model derives an intrusion detection system (IDS) encompassing two processes namely feature selection and classification. To detect intrusions, correlation based feature selection (CFS) and kernel extreme machine learning (KELM) classifier is applied. The performance of the BCSFO-RPS model is tested using a series of experiments and the results reported the enhancements of the BCSFO-RPS model over other approaches with maximum accuracy of 98.70%.

Hardware Limitations to Secure C-ITS: Experimental Evaluation and Solutions

Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) improve driving experience and safety through secure Vehicular Ad-hoc NETworks (VANETs) that satisfy strict security and performance constraints. Relevant standards, such as the IEEE 1609.2, prescribe network-efficient cryptographic protocols to reduce communication latencies through a combination of the Elliptic Curve Qu-Vanstone (ECQV) implicit certificate scheme and the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA). However, literature lacks open implementations and performance evaluations for vehicular systems. This paper assesses the applicability of IEEE 1609.2 and of ECQV and ECDSA schemes to C-ITSs. We release an open implementation of the standard ECQV scheme to benchmark its execution time on automotive-grade boards. Moreover, we evaluate its performance in real road and traffic scenarios and show that compliance with strict latency requirements defined for C-ITS requires computational resources that are not met by many automotive-grade embedded hardware platforms. As a final contribution, we propose and evaluate novel heuristics to reduce the number of signatures to be verified in real C-ITS scenarios.

CPPA-D: Efficient Conditional Privacy-Preserving Authentication Scheme With Double-Insurance in VANETs

With the establishment of the intelligent transportation system (ITS), the vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) play a significant role for improving traffic safety and efficiency. In order to avoid malicious attack and resource abuse in VANETs, the use of digital signature scheme is widely regarded as the first line of defense to achieve a secure VANETs system. However, it is still a challenging task to design a conditional privacy preserving authentication scheme, to resolve security and privacy-preserving problems in VANETs and to improve the utilization ratio of information resources. In addition, the relevant researches show that the tamper-proof device (TPD) is vulnerable to side channel attacks. If the sensitive parameters stored in TPD are extracted, the system would be totally broken. To address these issues, this paper introduces a conditional privacy-preserving authentication scheme with double-insurance supporting batch verification (CPPA-D) for VANETs, which is constructed in cyclic groups on elliptic curves. Either the master private key or the vehicle private key is leaked, it is impossible to forge a valid authenticated message to deceive the recipients, which achieves double-insurance for private keys. When multiple messages are received, our CPPA-D scheme allows the receiver to perform batch verification to improve the efficiency. Security analysis shows that our CPPA-D scheme not only can resist traditional attacks but also can solve the security problems caused by private key stolen in the TPD under side channel attack. There is also a certain advantage in computation overhead according to efficiency analysis and comparison.

MSOM: Efficient Mechanism for Defense against DDoS Attacks in VANET

The wireless nature of the Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET), a technology that offers facilities such as traffic management and safety services, makes it vulnerable to distributed denial‐of‐service (DDoS) attacks that exploit network communications and reduce network reliability and performance. This paper proposes a design of a secure VANET architecture using a Software‐Defined Networking (SDN) controller and Neural Network Self‐Organizing Maps (SOMs). In the proposed design, we adopt the SDN architecture by using its separation of the control plane from the data plane and adding intelligent capabilities to the VANET. To resolve the drawbacks of standard SOMs and to enhance the SOM’s efficiency, a Multilayer Distributed SOM (MSOM) model based on two levels of clustering and classification is used. Experimental results show that our solution can efficiently detect malicious traffic, prevent and mitigate DDoS attacks, and increase system security and recovery speed from the attacking traffic. Moreover, the proposed scheme achieves a high accuracy rate (99.67%). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the MSOM regarding detection accuracy and other studied metrics.

Secure and Efficient Data Sharing in Dynamic Vehicular Networks

With the development of wireless communication and the pervasive Internet of Things, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have attracted much attention in recent years. As a platform for vehicular communication and management, VANETs require the guarantee of security and efficiency for the resources constrained and unreliable networks. In this article, a data-sharing scheme is proposed for VANETs where both efficient key updating and dynamic property of VANETs are supported. In particular, the symmetric balanced incomplete block design (SBIBD) in combinatorics is introduced to ensure secure and efficient VANETs while the concept of indistinguishability obfuscation is employed to support efficient key updating. In order to simultaneously satisfy the resources constrained and real-time requirements of VANETs, both serial and parallel construction of the SBIBD is implemented by the shift register. Taking advantage of this efficient sequential logical circuit, we eliminate the complicated construction of the SBIBD, thereby, making it effective for the resource-constrained environment. Theoretical and experimental analyses indicate that the proposed scheme is practical for VANETs with high security and efficiency.

Integration of VANET and 5G Security: A review of design and implementation issues

The commercial adaptation of Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET) to achieve secure Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) heavily depends on the security guarantees for the end-users and consumers. Current VANET security standards address most of the security challenges faced by the vehicular networks. However, with the emergence of 5th Generation (5G) networks, and the demand for a range of new applications and services through vehicular networks, it is imperative to integrate 5G and vehicular networks. To achieve a seamless integration, various design and implementation issues related to 5G and VANETs must be addressed. We focus on the security issues that need to be considered in order to enable the secure integration of 5G and VANETs. More precisely, we conduct in-depth study of the current security issues, solutions, and standards used in vehicular networks and then we identify the security gaps in the existing VANET security solutions. We investigate the security features of 5G networks and discuss how they can be leveraged in vehicular networks to enable a seamless and efficient integration. We also propose a security architecture for vehicular networks wherein the current VANET security standards and 5G security features coexist to support secure VANET applications. Finally, we discuss some future challenges and research directions for 5G-enabled secure vehicular networks.

Toward Secure Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks an Overview and Comparative Study

Significant increasing in the number of vehicle accidents around the world and the resulting losses in both aspects human and material necessitate us to find efficient, innovative solutions to this passive phenomenon. Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET) is an emerging technology that attracts many research interests in the field of wireless communications due to its benefits in providing more road safety and enhancing traffic management. Security is one of the most critical issues that face VANETs. VANETs are vulnerable to different types of attacks as long as they are still a fertile area for attackers to compromise the network with their malicious attacks. However, to build robustness networks, a vital issue that needs to be taken into consideration is to make the networks resistant to security attacks. This paper presents an introduction to VANETs and its structure and provides an overview of fundamental security challenges and requirements in VANETs. It also discusses and investigates major security attacks and its effects on the security requirements. Afterwards, it studies, compares and finally classifies a variety of possible countermeasures that have been proposed to cope with these attacks.

LESPP: lightweight and efficient strong privacy preserving authentication scheme for secure VANET communication

Authentication in vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) is still a research challenge, as it requires not only secure and efficient authentication, but also privacy preservation. In this paper, we proposed a lightweight and efficient authentication scheme (LESPP) with strong privacy preservation for secure VANET communication. The proposed scheme utilizes self-generated pseudo identity to guarantee both privacy preservation and conditional traceability, and it only requires a lightweight symmetric encryption and message authentication code (MAC) generation for message signing and a fast MAC re-generation for verification. Compared with currently existing public key based schemes, the proposed scheme significantly reduces computation cost by $$10^2$$102---$$10^3$$103 times and decreases communication overhead by 41.33---77.60 %, thus achieving resilience to denial of service (DoS) attack. In LESPP, only key management center can expose a vehicle's real identity from its pseudo identity, therefore, LESPP provides strong privacy preservation so that the adversaries cannot trace any vehicles, even if all roadside units are compromised. Furthermore, vehicles in LESPP need not maintain certificate revocation list (CRL), so any CRL related overhead is avoided. Extensive simulations reveal that the novel scheme is feasible and has an outstanding performance of nearly 0 ms network delay and 0 % packet loss ratio, which are especially appropriate for realtime emergency event reporting applications.

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETS): status, results, and challenges

Recent advances in hardware, software, and communication technologies are enabling the design and implementation of a whole range of different types of networks that are being deployed in various environments. One such network that has received a lot of interest in the last couple of years is the Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET). VANET has become an active area of research, standardization, and development because it has tremendous potential to improve vehicle and road safety, traffic efficiency, and convenience as well as comfort to both drivers and passengers. Recent research efforts have placed a strong emphasis on novel VANET design architectures and implementations. A lot of VANET research work have focused on specific areas including routing, broadcasting, Quality of Service (QoS), and security. We survey some of the recent research results in these areas. We present a review of wireless access standards for VANETs, and describe some of the recent VANET trials and deployments in the US, Japan, and the European Union. In addition, we also briefly present some of the simulators currently available to VANET researchers for VANET simulations and we assess their benefits and limitations. Finally, we outline some of the VANET research challenges that still need to be addressed to enable the ubiquitous deployment and widespead adoption of scalable, reliable, robust, and secure VANET architectures, protocols, technologies, and services.

An Essential of Security in Vehicular Ad hoc Network

Ad-Hoc Networks (VANET) are a specific type of wireless ad-hoc networks, formed with short range wireless communication devices, each one representing a vehicle on the road or a static device. Developing applications and protocols for Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) poses unique security challenges, induced by the devices being used, the high speed and sporadic connectivity of the vehicles, the high relevance of their geographic location combined with the absence of adequate/reliable means of determining it. Since the last few years VANET have received increased attention as the potential technology to enhance active and preventive safety on the road, as well as travel comfort. Security and privacy are indispensable in vehicular communications for successful acceptance and deployment of such a technology. Generally, attacks cause anomalies to the network functionality. A secure VANET system, while exchanging information should protect the system against unauthorized message injection, message alteration, eavesdropping. This paper is an attempt to highlights the problems occurred in Vehicle Ad hoc Networks and security issues.

Vehicular ad hoc and sensor networks

Recently there has been a strong interest in developing networking techniques and important applications for moving vehicles, to enable wireless communication between roadside and vehicles or between vehicles. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) and vehicular sensor networks (VSNs) using all kinds of wireless technologies has recently received great attention. In the aspect of networking, there are many challenges on how to offer quality of service, build high performance routing, provide mobility management, and create secure VANETs and VSNs. The goal of this Special Issue is to explore the development of vehicular ad hoc and sensor network technologies about communication, networking, and applications.

Security attacks and solutions for vehicular ad hoc networks

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have attracted a lot of attention over the last few years. They have become a fundamental component of many intelligent transportation systems and VANETs are being used to improve road safety and enable a wide variety of value-added services. Many forms of attacks against VANETs have emerged recently that attempt to compromise the security of such networks. Such security attacks on VANETs may lead to catastrophic results such as the loss of lives or loss of revenue for those value-added services. Therefore making VANETs secure has become a key objective for VANET designers. To develop and deploy secure VANET infrastructures remains a significant challenge. The authors discuss some of the main security threats and attacks that can be exploited in VANETs and present the corresponding security solutions that can be implemented to thwart those attacks.

Noninteractive, Anonymously Authenticated, and Traceable Message Transmission for VANETs

Unlike sensor and other ad-hoc wireless networks, vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are characterized by its high mobility which allows a very short communication interval among onboard units (OBUs) and between an OBU and road-side units (RSUs). This major characterization motivates the design of communication protocols that are noninteractive or at least require a very limited number of rounds between units. The challenging issue is that such protocols must satisfy a number of security services that could be complex by their nature. In secure VANETs protocols, anonymity and traceability are two important services, yet, achieving a satisfactory security level for both of them—with acceptable complexity—is not an easy task due to the contradicting requirements: anonymous transmission must not be traceable by any individual while if a transmission is traceable, then anonymity is threatened. Existing secure VANETs protocols for anonymous and traceable transmissions either, provide unconditional anonymity where traceability and revocation are impossible, or grant trust to a thirdparty not to reveal the identity of a unit unless there is a legal reason. In this paper, we propose the first secure VANET protocol that allows authenticated transmission among OBUs and RSUs and at the same time enjoys the following properties. (i) The transmission among OBUs and RSUs is noninteractive (i.e., a one-move transmission without any interactive setup requirements). (ii) The authenticated transmission between any pair of units is anonymous (i.e., no single authority knows any information about the identity of the communicating OBU). (iii) In serious road crimes (e.g., hit-and-run, road rage, etc.) and under court order, an OBU could be traced to its clear identity. We also show how our protocol could be used to setup a confidential session between any pair of units without relying on extensive number of interactive rounds.

A secure and efficient communication scheme with authenticated key establishment and privacy preserving for vehicular ad hoc networks

Privacy and security should be paid much more attention in secure vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). However, as far as we know, few researches on secure VANET protocols have addressed both the privacy issues and authenticated key establishment. Therefore, in this work, a lightweight authenticated key establishment scheme with privacy preservation to secure the communications between mobile vehicles and roadside infrastructure in a VANET is proposed, which is called SECSPP. Our proposed scheme not only accomplishes vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside infrastructure authentication and key establishment for communication between members, but also integrates blind signature techniques into the scheme in allowing mobile vehicles to anonymously interact with the services of roadside infrastructure. We also show that our scheme is efficient in its implementation on mobile vehicles in comparison with other related proposals.
