Innovation performance feedback and inter-organization knowledge search in high-tech firms: The moderating role of technical knowledge complexity

Building on the knowledge search behaviors exhibited by high-tech firms, this study develops a contingency model to explore the relationship between innovation performance feedback and inter-organization knowledge search. The moderating role of technical knowledge complexity is then examined. Utilizing the sample of high-tech firms in China and employing the negative binomial regression model, this study examines the influences of different states of innovation performance feedback (below and above aspirations) on knowledge search breadth and depth. The results show a significant U-shaped relationship between innovation performance below aspiration and the breadth and depth of inter-organization knowledge search. Moreover, there exists a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between innovation performance above aspiration and the search breadth and depth. Furthermore, the technical knowledge complexity enhances the U-shaped association of innovation performance below aspiration and knowledge search breadth, while strengthening the inverted U-shaped influence of innovation performance above aspiration and knowledge search depth.

Gaining Knowledge of a New and Contested Diagnosis – A Qualitative Examination of Swedish Parents of Children with Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS)

Background: Pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) is a symptom-based and clinically heterogeneous condition characterized by an abrupt and dramatic onset of symptoms such as loss of motoric and cognitive abilities, anxiety, compulsion, tics, and eating disorders. PANS is a new diagnosis and the condition has gathered controversy in research and clinical practice. Aim: We aimed to investigate the process by which parents of children with PANS acquire knowledge about the condition; the causes that lead parents to search for knowledge; the ways in which they search for knowledge; and the manner in which this knowledge is received by medical care professionals. Method: The study employed in-depth semi-structured, individual interviews with 13 parents of children diagnosed with PANS. An inductive qualitative thematic analysis was used as a guide for analyzing the data. Results: Challenges to understand their child’s illness and receive effective care led the parents to search for knowledge about PANS and provide an explanation for their child’s symptoms. They used personal and social resources to search for knowledge. They felt trusted and encouraged when clinicians endorsed their knowledge. On the other hand, when they were dismissed as a source of knowledge, they experienced a lack of trust towards professionals. Conclusions: A driving force for parents’ search for knowledge is a perceived incapacity to give meaning to their experiences. Another reason is mistrust of healthcare staff’s existing knowledge.

How do companies adopt open innovation to enable circular economy? Insights from a qualitative meta‐analysis of case studies

AbstractOpen innovation (OI) is a pivotal driver in fostering the practical implementation of circular economy (CE). Based on 42 case studies identified through a systematic search, the present study seeks to understand how OI strategies are currently integrated within companies' circular business models (CBMs). The content analysis of the cases, interpreted through a strategy matrix, emphasises a prevalent inclination among companies towards collaborative and network‐based OI strategies. These strategies exhibit high depth and breadth of knowledge search, indicating companies' tendency to engage with numerous knowledge sources in deep partnership. Moreover, the findings underscore that the companies tend to favour OI strategies rooted in the depth of knowledge search rather than breadth in developing CBMs. In addition to contributing to the existing CE knowledge, the findings of this study offer empirical insights for managers, practitioners and policymakers, aiming to effectively integrate OI strategies into CBMs.

Artificial intelligence orientation and internationalization speed: A knowledge management perspective

This study explores the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) orientation in facilitating the internationalization speed of enterprises from emerging economies. Based upon a knowledge management perspective, the paper proposes that AI orientation positively affects internationalization speed via broadening the scope of new knowledge, promoting knowledge creation, application, and dissemination within organizations, and hastening the redundancy of existing knowledge to increase adaptability to global dynamics. Moreover, while online local knowledge search facilitates, offline local knowledge search constrains the acceleration effect of AI orientation on internationalization. Using a dataset from China, the paper finds that AI orientation has a significant positive effect on accelerating the internationalization processes of emerging market firms, and home country embeddedness negatively while regional digital development positively moderates this relationship. The findings contribute to the literature by elucidating how AI orientation expedites the process of an emerging market firm's internationalization from a knowledge management perspective, thereby providing insights for the future scholarly investigation and practical applications in this field.

The portfolio as a teaching/learning strategy in a dentistry course: students' perceptions

The use of portfolios in academic activities is used to document and reflect on learning. They allow for the organization of work, the assessment of progress and the demonstration of skills. Thus, encouraging self-assessment becomes a valuable tool for both students and educators. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the perception of students of the dentistry course at a private university in southern Brazil regarding the use of the portfolio as a teaching/learning strategy. An exploratory, descriptive case study with a qualitative approach was conducted with a convenience sample of fourth semester dental students. A semi-structured interview was held with each participant individually. The answers were recorded and subsequently transcribed. The data were submitted to the content analysis method proposed by Bardin. The sample was composed of seven students (six women and one man). The mean age was 24 years old. The aspects perceived as the most influential in the construction of the portfolio were the importance of the professor guiding the work and motivating the students, the subjectivity of the process, which depends on the individual characteristics of each student, and the importance of sharing ideas with classmates. The method was considered challenging, as it demands self-expression and the capacity for critical, reflexive thought. All students discussed the potentialities of the method. Despite being considered a challenging method, the portfolio proved to be an effective teaching/learning strategy. The use of this method encouraged the search for knowledge in a continual, holistic process that better prepared the students for evaluations.

Management innovation, digital capacity and enterprise innovation performance

Purpose Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are key players in economic activities. Yet little research focuses on their management innovation’s effect on innovation performance, this paper explores the impact of three sub-dimensions of management innovation (new organizational structure, new processes and new practices) on innovation performance (innovation outcome performance and innovation process performance) of SMEs in the manufacturing industry. It elucidates the mediating role of external knowledge search (search depth and search breadth) and identifies the moderating effect of digital capability.Design/methodology/approach By collecting primary data through a questionnaire survey, this paper employs Mplus and SPSS to analyze data.FindingsThis paper finds that management innovation positively affects innovation performance, with a greater impact on innovation outcome performance. Search breadth partially mediates the relationship between new organizational structure and innovation performance. Digital capability positively moderates the positive relationship between management innovation and external knowledge search.Originality/value The theoretical contribution of this study is to supplement the research on the consequences of management innovation and to improve the theoretical relationship between management innovation and external knowledge search based on firm behavior theory.

Heterogeneity in organizational search behaviors: The case of corporate venture capital units

AbstractResearch SummaryOur qualitative study of five corporate venture capital (CVC) units reveals that CVC is organized along one of two distinct pathways—order‐taker or free‐bird. Our two‐pathway model deconstructs the heterogeneity within CVC designs and provides detailed insights into the processual nature of CVC search mechanisms. We find evidence that the locus of problem formulation influences the chosen search behavior. While order‐takers respond to predefined corporate‐led problem formulation, free‐birds allow the venture market to guide search behavior. Differences in search processes can thus be attributed to the pursuit of distinct problem‐solution pairs. Implications for CVC and organizational search literature are discussed.Managerial SummaryOrganizations search for new knowledge and technologies using corporate venture capital (CVC) units. Despite growing evidence of heterogeneity in CVC designs, managers continue to have limited insights for designing and running such CVC units. In contrast to previous recommendations to use structural attributes and/or institutional logics to design and manage CVCs, we provide managers an organizational search lens which reveals significant variations in how corporations search for new ventures. We identified two extreme CVC designs driven by the locus of problem formulation (internal vs. external): order‐takers—who respond to a predefined and corporate‐led problem formulation approach, and free‐birds—who shape the problem formulation guided by venture market dynamics. We point to design differences across popular CVC subprocesses which can be handy for managers.

Using technology broadcasting to explore market applications: The moderating role of a firm's domain‐specific and general knowledge

AbstractInnovative firms, like startups, are increasingly making use of technology broadcasting to explore market applications for their technology. While findings from previous studies suggest that these firms can get access to a large pool of suggestions for market applications through technology broadcasting, we lack empirical evidence on whether firms that use technology broadcasting will actually be able to process and explore these suggestions. The current study points to the distinct role of firms' domain‐specific and general knowledge base in this respect. It proposes that technology broadcasting is positively related to the number of market applications a firm explores. Moreover, it hypothesizes that this relationship is weakened by the firm's domain‐specific knowledge and strengthened by its general knowledge base. We use Poisson analyses on hand‐collected survey and secondary data on a sample of 205 Flemish startups. We find that technology broadcasting is positively associated with the number of market applications a firm explores. Furthermore, this positive relationship is stronger with increasing general knowledge, but weaker with increasing domain‐specific knowledge. These findings advance our understanding of the boundary conditions of technology broadcasting. Additionally, our study contributes to the open innovation literature which has called for more attention to the challenges an organization faces in managing its external knowledge search. Finally, our study provides important practical insights for innovative firms that are trying to find market applications for their technology.

The aim of this research is to gain knowledge about the concept of the true meaning of jihad. Using qualitative methods supported by literature review with various stages containing content analysis. With the final result stating that Jihad in Islam has a broad and deep meaning. Etymologically, jihad comes from the Arabic word "جَهَدَ" which means trying seriously. M. Quraish Shihab explained that jihad includes the meaning of difficulties, tests, abilities, and struggle against Satan and lust, supported by verses from the Koran such as Q.S. ali-Imran: 142 and Q.S. al-Baqarah: 214. Jihad is divided into fardhu 'ain and fardhu kifayah. Fardhu 'ain is an individual obligation in critical situations, such as direct war, while fardhu kifayah is a collective obligation which if some people have carried it out, others are free from this obligation. Scholars such as Yusuf Qardhawi and Hassan al-Banna stated that jihad includes defending the truth, securing preaching, and fighting oppression, as well as aspects of education, politics, and material sacrifice. Knowledge identification for open innovation: a case study of biotechnology firms

PurposeDespite the increasing studies concerning external knowledge for innovative firms or for innovations, little research demonstrates as what are those capabilities that enable firms to explore and assess high-valuable knowledge. The aim of this study is to examine those capabilities that aid innovative firms to search and identify the potential knowledge for open innovation. This study is an empirical and theoretical examination of knowledge search and identification capabilities of the UK-based biotechnology firms. The literature has been drawn from the research streams into knowledge management, open innovation and dynamic capabilities.Design/methodology/approachForty-five semi-structured interviews with senior-level innovation and R&D managers were completed, and thematic analysis using NVivo 12 was performed.FindingsEvidence from 45 interviews with senior-level innovation and R&D managers in the UK-based biotechnology firms and thematic analysis was used to develop a process framework capturing the key capabilities. By identifying the role and contribution of each of the capabilities in knowledge identification in the practices of open innovation, this study contributes to open innovation and knowledge management literature.Practical implicationsManagerial implications suggest knowledge-oriented leads greatly influence the development of identification capabilities. Hence, firms with knowledge-oriented leads are better crafted approaches to achieve competitive advantages in the practices of open innovation.Originality/valueThis study offers a new theoretical perspective and empirical evidence to view knowledge identification capabilities as the dynamic capabilities. This study offers a process framework of identification capabilities.

Construction of a Multimedia Instructional Effect Assessment System of College Foreign Language Translation Based on Artificial Intelligence

The teaching evaluation module is an important guarantee of teaching effectiveness, and as an important part of the multimedia teaching system, it needs special attention. This paper combines artificial intelligence and multimedia teaching effect evaluation, proposes a foreign language translation multimedia teaching effect evaluation model based on improved support vector machine (SVM) algorithm, and provides theoretical support for the construction of foreign language translation multimedia teaching effect evaluation system. The results show that the accuracy of this assessment algorithm is improved by 22.18% compared with the traditional assessment algorithm. Therefore, it is theoretically feasible to use the improved SVM to analyse the application effect of multimedia teaching mode in foreign language translation teaching. It can be found that the automatic acquisition of model data, the cumulative search of spatial knowledge and the adaptive control of the search phase of the optimised SVM algorithm have also been significantly improved, and conclusions drawn are more reliable.

A Semi-Automated Solution Approach Recommender for a Given Use Case: a Case Study for AI/ML in Oncology via Scopus and OpenAI

Nowadays, literature review is a necessary task when trying to solve a given problem. However, an exhaustive literature review is very time-consuming in today’s vast literature landscape. It can take weeks, even if looking only for abstracts or surveys. Moreover, choosing a method among others, and targeting searches within relevant problem and solution domains, are not easy tasks. These are especially true for young researchers or engineers starting to work in their field. Even if surveys that provide methods used to solve a specific problem already exist, an automatic way to do it for any use case is missing, especially for those who don’t know the existing literature. Our proposed tool, SARBOLD-LLM, allows discovering and choosing among methods related to a given problem, providing additional information about their uses in the literature to derive decision-making insights, in only a few hours. The SARBOLD-LLM comprises three modules: (1: Scopus search) paper selection using a keyword selection scheme to query Scopus API; (2: Scoring and method extraction) relevancy and popularity scores calculation and solution method extraction in papers utilizing OpenAI API (GPT 3.5); (3: Analyzes) sensitivity analysis and post-analyzes which reveals trends, relevant papers and methods. Comparing the SARBOLD-LLM to manual ground truth using precision, recall, and F1-score metrics, the performance results of AI in the oncology case study are 0.68, 0.9, and 0.77, respectively. SARBOLD-LLM demonstrates successful outcomes across various domains, showcasing its robustness and effectiveness. The SARBOLD-LLM addresses engineers more than researchers, as it proposes methods and trends without adding pros and cons. It is a useful tool to select which methods to investigate first and comes as a complement to surveys. This can limit the global search and accumulation of knowledge for the end user. However, it can be used as a director or recommender for future implementation to solve a problem.

The purpose of this text is to relate artistic research to the search for knowledge driven by Eros. It is necessary to focus on one way of researching -in the arts- to see if its objectives and its epistemological contributions are beyond the requirements of producing proven knowledge. The artistic process that is driven by amorousness could take its epistemological nuclei -the intuitions that are expressed on every artwork- and develop them conceptually on the surface itself of the work of art, resulting in a place that reunites intuitions and concepts to resume the integration of knowledge.

Design of a large language model for improving customer service in telecom operators

AbstractTelecommunications operators are tasked with enhancing service quality, reducing operational costs, and preserving customer privacy. This study presents an innovative application of large language models (LLMs) integrated with the LangChain technology framework, aimed at revolutionizing customer service in the telecom sector. The LangChain framework features a Knowledge Organizing Module and a Knowledge Search Module, both designed to refine customer support operations. The research develops an LLM‐based approach to improve the segmentation and organization of knowledge bases, tailored for the telecommunications industry. This approach ensures seamless integration with existing LLMs while preserving distinct knowledge domains, crucial for search accuracy. Additionally, the framework includes an advanced information security protocol with a robust filtering system that effectively excludes sensitive data from the model's outputs, enhancing data security. Empirical findings indicate that the ChatGLM2‐6B+LangChain model outperforms the baseline ChatGLM2, demonstrating heightened effectiveness in telecom‐specific tasks and outstripping even more sophisticated models like GPT‐4. The implementation of this LLM‐based framework within telecom customer service systems has significantly sharpened the precision of knowledge recommendations, as reflected by a dramatic increase in acceptance rates from 15% to 70%.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to present how university (graduate) students use ChatGPT, an interactive artificial intelligence chatbot service, and what their perceptions are about it. Methods In order to achieve research objectives, We interviewed six college (graduate) students who had experience voluntarily using ChatGPT starting in early 2023, immediately after the launch of the ChatGPT service. Afterwards, we derived research results through the process of interview content analysis, member checking, and revision. Results First, university (graduate) students' satisfaction with their first experience of using ChatGPT influenced the frequency and reliability of subsequent ChatGPT use. Second, the purpose of using ChatGPT was information/ knowledge search, acquisition, confirmation, translation, coding and code modification, writing, foreign language learning, and brainstorming. Third, the method of use changed depending on the purpose of using ChatGPT. When brainstorming was needed, simple questions were asked about topics or keywords, and when in-depth information or knowledge was needed, the field, concept, and type of desired answer were specifically presented. When students checked their understanding or needed specific information, they first organized their thoughts and then asked questions. Additionally, they asked questions as if they were talking to a person, verified the information and answers provided by ChatGPT on their own rather than using them as is, and searched for related literature when necessary. Fourth, students recognized that the main characteristic of ChatGPT is that it provides easy and convenient access to various knowledge and information. Fifth, students mentioned that ChatGPT helps learning by saving time and acquiring ideas, but it has limitations such as acquiring incorrect knowledge and information, need for additional confirmation, and low learning effectiveness. Conclusions University (graduate) students are actively experiencing various areas of use of ChatGPT and are receiving meaningful help in learning using it. In the future, it will be necessary to clearly guide students on the strengths and limitations and discover and share various use cases so that they can use ChatGPT effectively.

Metabolomic Markers in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among Children and Adolescents-A Systematic Review.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), characterized by clinical diversity, poses diagnostic challenges often reliant on subjective assessments. Metabolomics presents an objective approach, seeking biomarkers for precise diagnosis and targeted interventions. This review synthesizes existing metabolomic insights into ADHD, aiming to reveal biological mechanisms and diagnostic potentials. A thorough PubMed and Web of Knowledge search identified studies exploring blood/urine metabolites in ADHD-diagnosed or psychometrically assessed children and adolescents. Synthesis revealed intricate links between ADHD and altered amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter dysregulation (especially dopamine and serotonin), oxidative stress, and the kynurenine pathway impacting neurotransmitter homeostasis. Sleep disturbance markers, notably in melatonin metabolism, and stress-induced kynurenine pathway activation emerged. Distinct metabolic signatures, notably in the kynurenine pathway, show promise as potential diagnostic markers. Despite limitations like participant heterogeneity, this review underscores the significance of integrated therapeutic approaches targeting amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitters, and stress pathways. While guiding future research, this overview of the metabolomic findings in ADHD suggests directions for precision diagnostics and personalized ADHD interventions.

Too close for comfort: the pitfall of incumbents' knowledge search during industry evolution

Innovation shocks combine technology and market disruptions. They can lead to a complete overhaul of an industry. Building on prior work on firm‐level responses to technological uncertainty, we propose and explore a model to explain R&D behavior under uncertainty. We theorize that industry incumbents adjust their knowledge search as the innovation shock unfolds, reacting to the perceived sources of uncertainty. We use a unique combination of two decades (2000–2020) of patent data and archival news to (1) identify the industry evolution stages as the shock unfolds and (2) map the firm's knowledge search response. Our analysis of three leading car manufacturers exposed to the emergence of the electric vehicle shows the path‐dependency effects that delay the incumbents’ adjustment of their innovation direction, even after the shock becomes visible. We extract insights for R&D managers by making evident the long‐lasting effects of prior R&D decisions, impeding their reaction to a shock and reducing their capability to integrate newly available knowledge.

Microplastics, physical-chemical and biological principles of this environmental liability

The advent of plastic to the social situation has suppressed a series of demands from both the industry and the population, due to cost, durability and disposal. Because they can be rigid, malleable, opaque, translucent, easy or difficult to melt by the action of fire, some make them capable of serving as raw material for various products on the market, including those widely used in the food industry. In view of the above, the present study aims at a bibliographical review on the topic of microplastics, where the search will be to verify the primary and secondary steps necessary for the formation of the compound, its direct and indirect influence on food production, the physical-chemical processes through which compounds are obtained and the presence or absence of regulation regarding this environmental liability. The present study aims to analyze as a basis the search for knowledge of the primary and secondary formation of microplastics. Subsequently, together with its main objective, this study aims to search for the physico-chemical and thermodynamic phenomena involved in the process of formation and obtaining of microplastics, the polluting potential and, like all waste, its implications for human health. A study horizon was established covering the years 2015 to 2023, where 3,750 articles were found and after applying open access filters, duplication of publication, words present only in the abstract and not in the text, 49 articles remained that are the object of this study. The direct implications of microplastic pollution are already a relevant reason for discussion and subsequent regulation by managers, researchers, international organizations and society in general. Public health problems that can transform into microplastics, containment and adsorption mechanisms of these compounds in living organisms, are points to be pursued by academia as a whole. Contamination by these compounds was found in bottled mineral water, human milk, processed foods, seafood, showing the extent of contamination of this material.
