Knowledge Hub is a multilingual public hub that catalogs and provides an index to Open Educational Resources (OERs). These open educational resources are freely available on the Internet and World Wide Web and belong to academic and professional higher education institutions with international presence worldwide. The Knowledge Hub helps to find OERs quickly. The main objective of this article is to describe the technological and educational development and implementation of this website search engine initiative. Described are different aspects and features of this website search engine for open educational resources, its technological aspects, and its developmental phases. Also presented are the findings of a survey about the uses and experiences of Tecnológico de Monterrey faculty regarding their adoption of open educational resources were located in the Knowledge Hub virtual index.

Fusing website usability and search engine optimisation

Background: Most websites, especially those with a commercial orientation, need a high ranking on a search engine for one or more keywords or phrases. The search engine optimisation process attempts to achieve this. Furthermore, website users expect easy navigation, interaction and transactional ability. The application of website usability principles attempts to achieve this. Ideally, designers should achieve both goals when they design websites.Objectives: This research intended to establish a relationship between search engine optimisation and website usability in order to guide the industry. The authors found a discrepancy between the perceived roles of search engines and website usability.Method: The authors designed three test websites. Each had different combinations of usability, visibility and other attributes. They recorded and analysed the conversions and financial spending on these experimental websites. Finally, they designed a model that fuses search engine optimisation and website usability.Results: Initially, it seemed that website usability and search engine optimisation complemented each other. However, some contradictions between the two, based on content, keywords and their presentation, emerged. Industry experts do not acknowledge these contradictions, although they agree on the existence of the individual elements. The new model highlights the complementary and contradictory aspects.Conclusion: The authors found no evidence of any previous empirical experimental results that could confirm or refute the role of the model. In the fast-paced world of competition between commercial websites, this adds value and originality to the websites of organisations whose websites play important roles.

The Design and Implementation of Micro-Blog User Interest Search Engine Base on Cloud Computing Technology

With the rapid development of Internet and the explosive growth of Internet information, massive data processing received more concerns. Micro-blog, which is an important representative pattern of the Internet development in the future, has become the essential tool of communication and marketing to all of us. Processing and using the massive data resulting from micro-blog activities has becomes a hot topic. In this paper, we propose a method to design and implement the User Interest Based Search Engine, a search engine can be used to search for the same interest micro-blog users. We at first crawl massive micro-blog data from micro-blog websites, and store this data in HBase. Then we process the massive data and build indices using MapReduce. Finally, we build a search engine web site based on Solr, and we propose a rank algorithm for searching. By employing this User Interest Based Search Engine, we can accurately search other users with the same interests as ourselves.

Extending community based health care services to counter the multi-dimensional threat of hypertension

Hypertension has been identified as an important public health concern of global distribution and as the key risk factor for most of the common cardiovascular diseases. Rationale and adequate control of hypertension is a key element in the prevention of hypertension induced-organ damage and the associated life threatening complications. An extensive search of all materials related to the topic was done in Pubmed, Medline, World Health Organization website and Google Scholar search engines. Keywords used in the search included hypertension, cardiovascular disease, public health, lifestyle modifications, and awareness. A diverse range of socio-demographic and health system related factors have been acknowledged in the causation and determining the long-term outcomes of the disease. As the natural history of hypertension is complex the strategy to combat also should be multi-pronged based on the pre-existing factors in different settings. Altogether, although some progress has been observed in the field of community awareness, blood pressure level control, and therapeutic modalities, the need is to implement sustainable and cost-effective interventions that will not only halt but also reverse the rising trend of hypertension. Community-based health education strategies, adoption of healthy dietary and lifestyle practices, and availability of effective drugs are effective measures to mitigate the overall burden of the disease.

Website Search Engine Optimization: Geographical and Cultural Point of View

The concept of Webpage visibility is usually linked to search engine optimization (SEO), and it is based on global in-link metric [1]. SEO is the process of designing Webpages to optimize its potential to rank high on search engines, preferably on the first page of the results page. The purpose of this research study is to analyze the influence of local geographical area, in terms of cultural values, and the effect of local society keywords in increasing Website visibility. Websites were analyzed by accessing the source code of their homepages through Google Chrome browser. Statistical analysis methods were selected to assess and analyze the results of the SEO and search engine visibility (SEV). The results obtained suggest that the development of Web indicators to be included should consider a local idea of visibility, and consider a certain geographical context. The geographical region that the researchers are considering in this research is the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan (HKJ). The results obtained also suggest that the use of social culture keywords leads to increase the Website visibility in search engines as well as localizes the search area such as google.jo, which localizes the search for HKJ.

Overlapping factors in search engine optimization and web accessibility

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to show that the pursuit of a high search engine relevance ranking for a webpage is not necessarily incompatible with the pursuit of web accessibility.Design/methodology/approachThe research described arose from an investigation into the observed phenomenon that pages from accessible websites regularly appear near the top of search engine (such as Google) results, without any deliberate effort having been made through the application of search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to achieve this. The reasons for this phenomenon appear to be found in the numerous similarities and overlapping characteristics between SEO factors and web accessibility guidelines. Context is provided through a review of sources including accessibility standards and relevant SEO studies and the relationship between SEO and web accessibility is described. The particular overlapping factors between the two are identified and the precise nature of the overlaps is explained in greater detail.FindingsThe available literature provides firm evidence that the overlapping factors not only serve to ensure the accessibility of a website for all users, but are also useful for the optimization of the website's search engine ranking. The research demonstrates that any SEO project undertaken should include, as a prerequisite, the proper design of accessible web content, inasmuch as search engines will interpret the web accessibility achieved as an indicator of quality and will be able to better access and index the resulting web content.Originality/valueThe present study indicates how developing websites with high visibility in search engine results also makes their content more accessible.

Péridurale obstétricale : qualité de l’information médicale en français sur Internet en 2009 et 2010

ObjectiveThe variability of the medical information available on the Internet (MedInfoWeb) raises concern about its quality. There is no data about the quality of MedInfoWeb concerning epidural analgesia for labour (EAL). Our aims were to assess the quality of MedInfoWeb concerning EAL and to study the stability of MedInfoWeb and the ranking of website into search engine (SE) during 1year. Study designObservational study. Materials and methodsWe created our own data form to analyse the firsts 40 Google®, Alta Vista® and Yahoo® websites. In 2009 and 2010, two independent assessors assessed the quality of the website structure (structure score noted out of 25) and the quality of medical information (medical score noted out of 30). The global score (noted on 55) was the addition of structure and medical scores. A HONcode labelling was noted. ResultsBetween 2009 and 2010, the average global (23 vs. 22), structure (11 vs. 11) and medical (12 vs. 12) Scores were stable. The SE's quality was comparable. A SE website's rank was not related to its global score. The labelling HONcode websites were the best (26 vs. 21, P=0.048). The best website in 2009 and 2010 was doctissimo.fr. In 2010, only 58% of the websites were still presents. ConclusionThe quality of MedInfoWeb concerning EAL is poor and did not improve between 2009 and 2010. The MedInfoWeb is unstable: 42% of the websites disappeared in 1year. No website or SE is currently able to give reliable medical information concerning EAL.

The paper presents the phenomenon of a parallel import. It describes legal aspects and retrieval heuristics of information concerning an imported product, referring to an example of Betaxolol, coming from another EU country. The author discussed the retrieval strategy for a Portuguese product, referring to selected databases, i.e. ATC/DDD Index (WHO BAZYL, the Drug Bank, and the Infarmed. The article describes also the structure and application of the ATC Classification of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as a method for finding a product in the WHO website search engine.

The emergence of commercial genomics: analysis of the rise of a biotechnology subsector during the Human Genome Project, 1990 to 2004.

BackgroundDevelopment of the commercial genomics sector within the biotechnology industry relied heavily on the scientific commons, public funding, and technology transfer between academic and industrial research. This study tracks financial and intellectual property data on genomics firms from 1990 through 2004, thus following these firms as they emerged in the era of the Human Genome Project and through the 2000 to 2001 market bubble.MethodsA database was created based on an early survey of genomics firms, which was expanded using three web-based biotechnology services, scientific journals, and biotechnology trade and technical publications. Financial data for publicly traded firms was collected through the use of four databases specializing in firm financials. Patent searches were conducted using firm names in the US Patent and Trademark Office website search engine and the DNA Patent Database.ResultsA biotechnology subsector of genomics firms emerged in parallel to the publicly funded Human Genome Project. Trends among top firms show that hiring, capital improvement, and research and development expenditures continued to grow after a 2000 to 2001 bubble. The majority of firms are small businesses with great diversity in type of research and development, products, and services provided. Over half the public firms holding patents have the majority of their intellectual property portfolio in DNA-based patents.ConclusionsThese data allow estimates of investment, research and development expenditures, and jobs that paralleled the rise of genomics as a sector within biotechnology between 1990 and 2004.

This study investigates the online presence of information services on the public Web site of the top-ranked rehabilitation hospital in the United States, as designated by the annual U.S. News & World Report. Terms commonly used to describe information services were entered individually in the site's search engine to locate Web pages that mention information services. Search results were generally of low relevance and failed to retrieve any mention of the hospital library or librarian. However, links to the hospital's consumer health collections were retrieved.

A poisson regression examination of the relationship between website traffic and search engine queries

A new area of research involves the use of normalized and scaled Google search volume data to predict economic activity. This new source of data holds both many advantages as well as disadvantages. Daily and weekly data are employed to show the effect of aggregation in Google data, which can lead to contradictory findings. In this paper, Poisson regressions are used to explore the relationship between the online traffic to a specific website and the search volumes for certain search queries, along with the rankings of that website for those queries. The purpose of this paper is to point out the benefits and the pitfalls of a potential new source of data that lacks transparency in regards to the raw data, which is due to the normalization and scaling procedures utilized by Google.

The Critical Evaluation Of A Faculty Of Education Web Site By Computer Teacher Candidates

The aim of this research is to investigate the Web site evaluation skills of computer teacher candidates as they assess the Trakya University Faculty of Education web site in terms of visual design, structure and navigation. The research utilizes a Web Site Evaluation form and a semi-structured interview in order to collect the required data. The analysis of the quantitative data has been carried out via descriptive statistical techniques; with the frequency and percentage distribution figures for each item given in charts; whereas the analysis of the qualitative data has been carried out through descriptive analysis techniques. It was concluded from the study that the computer teacher candidates found the faculty web site to be easy to use and fluid in terms of navigation and they reported that the site works as intended and without problems. However, it was also reported by the teacher candidates, that the faculty web site had neither a customized site search engine nor a promotional video and that, the promotional images needed a more professional touch in order to have a stronger effect on visitors. Another conclusion was that the computer education teacher candidates tended to pay attention on issues like color schemes in the visual design of a web site and that they preferred not having too much visual detail or animations within similar websites.

Health information politics: Reconsidering the democratic ideal of the Web as a source of medical knowledge

This paper challenges the democratic ideal of the Web as a new public sphere in the medical context. Drawing on a mix of methods it investigates how different Web site providers configure and position their diabetes sites in the multitude of online health information, search engine results in particular. Building on insights gained from critical new media studies and medical sociology, it shows that a range of power relations and information politics are involved in these practices, triggering information visibility hierarchies and a commercialisation of online health information, partly overlapping with off–line contexts. To conclude, it argues for reconsidering the democratic ideal of the Web and focusing on market dynamics involved in the production of medical Web information co–produced by Web site providers and search engine algorithms.

A Full-text Website Search Engine Powered by Lucene and The Depth First Search Algorithm

With the amount of available text data on the web growing rapidly, the need for users to search such information is dramatically increasing. Full text search engines and relational databases each have unique strengths as development tools but also have overlapping capabilities. Both can provide for storage and update of data and both support search of the data. Full text systems are better for quickly searching high volumes of unstructured text for the presence of any word or combination of words. They provide rich text search capabilities and sophisticated relevancy ranking tools for ordering results based on how well they match a potentially fuzzy search request. Relational databases, on the other hand, excel at storing and manipulating structured data -- records of fields of specific types (text, integer, currency, etc.). They can do so with little or no redundancy. They support flexible search of multiple record types for specific values of fields, as well strong tools for quickly and securely updating individual records. The web being a collection of largely unstructured document which is ever growing in size, the appeal of using RDBMS for searching this collection of documents has become very costly. This paper describes the architecture, design and implementation of a prototype website search engine powered by Lucene to search through any website. This approach involves the development of a small scale web crawler to gather information from the desired website. The gathered information are then converted to a Lucene document and stored in the index. The time taken to search the index is very short when compared with how long it takes for a relational database to process a query.

Web site search engine optimization: a case study of Fragfornet

PurposeSearch Engine Optimization (SEO) is a set of techniques used by websites in order to be better indexed by search engines. This papers aims to focus upon “white hat”, “in page” SEO: techniques to improve one's site content, hereby making it more attractive to human visitors as well as search engines, by making changes within the site's pages while focusing on chosen themes and keywords. The final goal is for the site to be better ranked by one or several targeted search engines and therefore appearing higher in their results lists for specified requests. This paper seeks to describe the steps one must take to reach such a goal, while focusing on the example of the website Fragfornet.Design/methodology/approachFragfornet web pages have been generated through a “website factory” allowing the creation of dynamic websites on demand for the employees of Cemagref. This explains the steps to take to optimize for search engines any website using Zope Plone; even more broadly, the general recommendations described can be used by any website at all to gain more visibility on search engines. After a literature review about search engine optimization, the paper describes the methods used to optimize the website before exposing the results which were quickly obtained.FindingsIt was not long before the first effects of the SEO campaign were experienced. One week later, as soon as the Googlebots had crawled the site and stored a newer version of it within their databases, it immediately went up in the results pages for requests concerning forests fragmentation. This paper describes some of the parameters that were monitored and some of the conclusions drawn from them..Originality/valueThis paper's goal is to explain which steps to take for search engines to optimize any website elaborated through Cemagref website factory, or any website using Zope Plone. Even more broadly, the general recommendations described in this paper can be used by any librarian on any website to gain more visibility on search engines.

Assessing the Comprehensiveness of Informational Content About Complementary and Alternative Medicine on Cancer Organization Websites

The quality of the information about complementary and alternative medicine provided by four reputable cancer organization websites was assessed in terms of its comprehensiveness. Using each site's search engine, coverage of four CAM modalities, green tea, selenium, acupuncture, and reiki, were investigated. The websites of the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute provided the most comprehensive coverage. However, the amount of coverage varied considerably by CAM modality, with selenium, a nutritional supplement; acupuncture, a component of traditional Chinese medicine, itself an alternative medical system; and green tea, an herbal remedy, receiving much more coverage than reiki, an energy therapy of Tibetan and Japanese Buddhist origin.

Development of the search engine as a major information and marketing channel resulted from innovative technologies that made it capable of presenting rapid, relevant responses to queries. To do this, the search engine compiles an index of web pages of information stored on the World Wide Web, ranks each page according to its incoming links, matches keywords in the query to those in its index, and returns what it determines are the most relevant pages to the searcher. Innovative and cost-effective ad placement algorithms have attracted advertisers to search engine websites and intensified the competitive dynamics among industry leaders. Their interacting software also continues to draw advertisers from traditional, mass marketing channels like television and newspapers to the online medium to cater to customers who have expressed an interest in their products and services.

Improving Web Site Performance Using Commercially Available Analytical Tools

It is easy to accurately measure web site usage and to quantify key parameters such as page views, site visits, and more complex variables using commercially available tools that analyze web site log files and search engine use. This information can be used strategically to guide the design or redesign of a web site (templates, look-and-feel, and navigation infrastructure) to improve overall usability. The data can also be used tactically to assess the popularity and use of new pages and modules that are added and to rectify problems that surface. This paper describes software tools used to: (1) inventory search terms that lead to available content; (2) propose synonyms for commonly used search terms; (3) evaluate the effectiveness of calls to action; (4) conduct path analyses to targeted content. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) uses SurfRay's Behavior Tracking software (Santa Clara CA, USA, and Copenhagen, Denmark) to capture and archive the search terms that have been entered into the site's Google Mini search engine. The AAOS also uses Unica's NetInsight program to analyze its web site log files. These tools provide the AAOS with information that quantifies how well its web sites are operating and insights for making improvements to them. Although it is easy to quantify many aspects of an association's web presence, it also takes human involvement to analyze the results and then recommend changes. Without a dedicated resource to do this, the work often is accomplished only sporadically and on an ad hoc basis.
