Trapped between Scylla and Ciris: Some Thoughts on Poetic Structure1

This chapter treats the relationship between the pseudo-Vergilian Ciris and Ovid’s Scylla-episode in Book 8 of the Metamorphoses. It does not, however, make any claims about who wrote the Ciris, or even about which text influenced which: studies of Prioritätsbestimmung are legion, dating back for a century, and in large part unconvincing, not least because they disagree about the criteria to be used in determining priority. Instead, I offer a readerly treatment of Ovidian intertextuality vis à vis pseudepigraphic poetry. In particular, I will be exploring the mutually reinforcing gaps in the two narratives. These gaps have usually been seen as clues to which author is derivative; I suggest that they instead offer insights into the different poetic goals of the two authors.

The Identification Of Morphometric Characteristics And Fattenning Of Mud Crabs (Scylla spp.) In Para Island, Tatoareng District, Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi Province

The purpose of this study was to identify the morphometric characters of mangrove crabs Scylla spp. and to grow them on the island of Para Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi Province. There were 2 types of crabs found during crab’s collection. However, the most abundant one was Scylla serrata while the olivacea is only one tail. The results of this study indicate that mangrove crabs that were kept for 2 weeks feed on trash fish three times a day experience growth. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that: the type of crab found on Pulau Para, Tatoareng District, Sangihe Islands Regency, North Sulawesi Province were mostly S. serrata (34 tails) and one tail of S. olivacea. The fattening of mangrove crabs showed results on the body weight and carapace length.Further research on mangrove crabs needs to be done on different aspects such as preferable food and time of the abundancy.Keywords: Crab, Scylla spp., identification, fattening. ABSTRAK Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi karakter morfometrik kepiting bakau Scylla spp dan cara penggemukannya di Pulau Para Kabupaten Kepulauan Sangihe Provinsi Sulawesi Utara. Dua jenis kepiting bakau ditemukan saat pengumpulan data, namun yang ditemukan paling banyak adalah Scylla serrata, sedangkan S. olivacea hanya 1 ekor saja.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa kepiting bakau yang dipelihara selama 2 minggu dengan diberi pakan ikan rucah sebanyak tiga kali sehari mengalami pertumbuhan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa: jenis kepiting yang ditemukan di Pulau Para Kecamatan Tatoareng Kabupaten Kepulauan Sangihe Provinsi Sulawesi Utara adalah Scylla serrata (34 ekor) dan S. olivacea (1 ekor). Penggemukan kepiting bakau dengan pakan ikan rucah tiga kali sehari menunjukan adanya pertumbuhan berat badan dan panjang lebar karapas. Penelitian lanjutan tentang kepiting bakau perlu dilakukan untuk melihat berbagai aspek seperti makanan kesukaan dan waktu kelimpahanya.Kata kunci : Kepiting, Scylla spp, identifikasi, penggemukan.

Scylla and Charybdis: Italian moderates between absolute monarchy and the sovereignty of the people 1843 – 1861.

Between 1843 and 1861, the role of the Italian moderates was decisive in the process of the country’s unification. The latest historiography has extensively analyzed such a role in all of its internal and international implications and has often emphasized a kind of cultural backwardness on the part of the Italian moderates with respect to the major European currents of thought. This essay aims to contribute to eliminating such prejudice against the Italian moderates of this historical period by analyzing a fundamental aspect of their politics connected to beliefs and theoretical intuitions that would prove to be decisive in the transition from the old monarchic and aristocratic world to the new democratic one. My aim in this essay is to show how the Italian moderates, from the most conservative to the most progressive, succeeded, from 1843, in controlling the patriotic movement, rejecting the republican option as unfeasible in a country that was still profoundly monarchical. They were also able to limit the democratic thrust, which came from the epic deeds of the revolutionary period, channeling it within the idea of a representative government led by public opinion and by the higher ranking monarchical power. They could benefit both from the English and French experience, the latter after the Restoration, and understood, only after the institution of a constitutional monarchy and only under its protective shield, that some of the achievements of the French Revolution, from the point of view of freedom, civil rights and political participation, could have been preserved.

Optimization of stocking density in intensification of mud crab Scylla serrata cultivation in the resirculation system

<p class="NoParagraphStyle"><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p class="NoParagraphStyle"><strong> </strong></p><p class="NoParagraphStyle">This study aimed to determine optimum stocking density of mud crab <em>Scylla serrata</em> through the applied of different stocking density in every treatment in recirculation system. Experimental design used was complete randomized design (CRD) with three density treatments which were 5 (P1), 10 (P2), and 15 ind/container (P3). All treatments replicated three times. The crab with the average of body weight 150 g/ind cultured in a plastic box (40×30×30 cm). Crab was cultured within 60 days and were fed two times a day by at satiation method. The result showed that P2 treatment gave the best result of mangrove crabs production performance among all treatments with 73.33±5.77% survival rate, 0.68±0.01 g/ind/day absolute growth rate and food conversion ratio 10.11±0.01. Treatment P1 gave the good response of stress, it indicated by the lowest glucose of all tretamnets at the level of 31.91 mg/dL in the end of treatment periods. Kepiting bakau yang digunakan memiliki berat rata-rata 150 g/ekor. Wadah pemeliharaan yang digunakan selama pemeliharaan adalah kontainer plastik yang berukuran 40×30×30 cm. Pemeliharaan kepiting bakau dilaksanakan selama 60 hari dan diberikan pakan berupa ikan rucah dua kali sehari secara at satiation. Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan P2 memberikan hasil kinerja produksi terbaik dibandingkan perlakuan lainnya dengan nilai kelangsungan hidup 73,33±5,77%, laju pertumbuhan mutlak 0,68±0,01 g/ekor/hari, dan rasio konversi pakan 10,11±0,01. Perlakuan P1 menunjukkan respons stres yang baik dengan memiliki nilai kadar glukosa paling rendah dari perlakuan lain yaitu 31,91 mg/dL pada akhir masa pemeliharaan. Transesterification of Tropical Edible Oils to Biodiesel Using Catalyst From Scylla serrata

Abstract: Scylla serata shell was decomposed at various temperatures ranging from 700-1100 o C to obtain calcium oxide. Calcium oxide from decomposed Scylla serrata shell was characterized through X-Ray analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, and morphology analysis. Furthermore, decomposed Scylla serrata shell was used as catalyst for transesterification of tropical edible oils to form biodiesel. Biodiesel was characterized through density, viscosity, fatty acid value, and iodine number. The results showed that decomposed Scylla serrata shell at 900 o C could produce calcium oxide similar with standard, which was indicated from X-ray powder diffraction pattern of decomposed shell with JCPDS data. FTIR spectrum showed that main vibration of calcium oxide was observed at 393 cm -1 . Morphology analysis using SEM indicated that uniform calcium oxide was obtained after decomposition. The use of decomposed shell as base catalyst for transesterification of tropical edible oils resulted biodiesel with density, viscosity, fatty acid value, and iodine number appropriated with SNI standard. Kalsium oksida hasil dekomposisi dari cangkang Scylla serrata dikarakterisasi melalui pengukuran sinar X, analisis FTIR, dan analisis morfologi. Lebih lanjut, dekomposisi cangkang Scylla serrata digunakan sebagai katalis transesterifikasi minyak yang dimakan dari daerah tropis menjadi biodisel. Biodiesel dikarakterisasi melalui penentuan densitas, viskositas, nilai asam lemak, dan bilangan iod. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dekomposisi cangkang Scylla serrata pada 900 o C dapat menghasilkan kalsium oksida mirip kalsium oksida standar yang diindikasikan dari pola difraksi XRD yang mirip data JCPDS. Spektrum FTIR menunjukkan vibrasi utama kalsium oksida teramati pada bilangan gelombang 393 cm -1 . Analisis morfologi menggunakan SEM menunjukkan bahwa bentuk yang lebih seragam diperoleh setelah proses dekomposisi. Penggunaan cangkang hasil dekomposisi sebagai katalis basa untuk transesterifikasi minyak yang dimakan dari daerah tropis menghasilkan biodisel dengan densitas, viskositas, nilai asam lemak, dan bilangan iod yang sesuai dengan standar SNI. KONDISI PERAIRAN DAN POTENSI KEPITING BAKAU (Scylla sp) DI KECAMATAN ALUH-ALUH KALIMANTAN SELATAN

The purpose of the research was to give information condition and potention of mud crab. This research used survey method which are a). observation, b). direct interview c). in situ treatment and d). sampling. Research location at Sungai Musang Village, Aluh-Aluh, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan Province. Parameters observe were mud crab species, water quality (water temperature, salinity, water pH, NO 2 -N, NO 3 -N, NH 3 -N, DO, and transfarance), and biology (plankton dan mud crab larvae). The results founded that 3 mud crab species 1). Scylla serrata 2). S. transquebarica and 3) S. oceanica. The range of water temperature was (30-34 0 C), Salinity (0-1%o), water pH (7,80-8), NO 2 -N (0,36 mg/L), NO 3 -N (2,01 mg/L), NH 3 -N (0,46-2,5 mg/L), DO (1,65-4,20 ppm), transparance (32 cm), diversity index of phytoplankton (0,89), and zooplankton (1,58). Ecology and biology, showed that water quality was suitable to mud crab culture. Mud crab larvae was trap zoae and megalopa stadia with density of 20 ind/L. Little number of mud crab trapped, was assumed due todisfunction condition of mangrove forest.
