Comparison of several blood lipid-related indexes in the screening of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in women: a cross-sectional study in the Pearl River Delta region of southern China

BackgroundLipid metabolism disorders play a critical role in the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the number of studies on the relationships among blood lipid-related indexes and NAFLD is limited, and few studies have emphasized the comparison of blood lipid-related indexes in the same population to identify the optimal index for NAFLD screening. This study aimed to investigate the relationships among several blood lipid-related indexes and NAFLD, and to find the index with the best screening value for NAFLD.MethodsBased on a general health examination at community health service agencies in the Pearl River Delta region of China in 2015, 3239 women were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The relationships among blood lipid-related indexes and NAFLD were assessed separately by constructing multivariate logistic regression models. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to evaluate and compare the screening abilities of the indexes for NAFLD. All data analyses were conducted in SPSS and MedCalc software.ResultsWhether in the crude model or each model adjusted for possible confounding factors, the risk of NAFLD significantly rose with increasing cardiometabolic index (CMI), triglyceride glucose index (TyG), triglycerides (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (TG/HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC) to HDL-C ratio (TC/HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) to HDL-C ratio (LDL-C/HDL-C). Moreover, the area under the curve (AUC) of CMI was 0.744, which was better than that of TyG (0.725), TG/HDL-C (0.715), TC/HDL-C (0.650), and LDL-C/HDL-C (0.644) (P < 0.001). In addition, the optimal cut-off points were 0.62 for CMI, 8.55 for TyG, 1.15 for TG/HDL-C, 4.17 for TC/HDL-C, and 2.22 for LDL-C/HDL-C.ConclusionsCMI is easy to obtain, is a recommended index in the screening of NAFLD in women and may be useful for detecting populations that are at high risk of NAFLD.

Comparison of the Triglyceride Glucose Index and Modified Triglyceride Glucose Indices to Predict Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Youths

To assess the associations between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and modified TyG indices with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and evaluate their ability as predictors of NAFLD in youths. We analyzed the cross-sectional data of 3728 individuals aged 10-19years using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a nationally representative survey. Logistic regression analysis was performed, and ORs and 95% CIs of tertiles 2 and 3 for each variable for predicting NAFLD were calculated and compared with those of tertile 1 as the reference. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to evaluate the ability of each variable for NAFLD prediction. All TyG and modified TyG indices exhibited progressively increased ORs and 95% CIs for NAFLD across all tertiles (all P<.001). In addition, all TyG and modified TyG indices significantly predicted NAFLD through ROC curves. All modified TyG indices were superior to the TyG index for predicting NAFLD in all subjects and in males. Among females, the TyG-waist-to-height ratio was superior to the TyG index, TyG-body mass index (BMI), and TyG-waist circumference (WC), and the TyG-BMI SDS and TyG-WC were superior to the TyG index. The TyG and modified TyG indices are markers for NAFLD prediction in youths, and the modified TyG indices are superior to the TyG index. Modified TyG indices have the potential to be simple and cost-effective markers in screening for NAFLD in youths.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique (non-ionizing radiation) with superior soft tissue contrasts and potential morphological and functional applications. However, long examination and interpretation times, as well as higher costs, still represent barriers to MRI use in clinical routine. Abbreviated MRI protocols have emerged as an alternative to standard MRI protocols. Abbreviated MRI protocols eliminate redundant sequences that negatively affect cost, acquisition time, patient comfort. However, the diagnostic information is generally not compromised. Abbreviated MRI protocols have already been utilized for hepatocellular carcinoma, for prostate cancer detection, and for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease screening.

A New Machine Learning-Based Complementary Approach for Screening of NAFLD (Hepatic Steatosis).

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is the major reason for liver disease globally. Early warning of liver disease at the beginning of a progressive disease spectrum is critical for reduced mortality and increased longevity. Current clinical practices focus on disease management but can be improved in terms of screening & early detection. This paper focuses on machine learning-based intelligent model development using liver functionality and physiological parameters for Hepatic Steatosis (Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver) screening. Gender-specific models were developed separately. Customized data processing techniques were incorporated. Publicly available, population data (NHANES-III) was used. The maximum sensitivity provided by the models were approximately 72% and 71% for male and female, respectively. Maximum specificities obtained by the models were 74% and 75% for male and female, respectively. Performance comparison of different models has been discussed.

Low awareness of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in patients with type 2 diabetes in Swedish Primary Health Care

Objectives Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is more common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) compared to individuals without. Recent guidelines recommend screening for NAFLD in patients with T2DM. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of NAFLD in patients with T2DM in a Swedish primary health care setting, how they are cared for and assess the risk of biochemical signs of advanced fibrosis. Material and methods In this cohort study, patients with T2DM from five primary health care centers were included. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed and living habits, medical history, results of diagnostic imaging and anthropometric and biochemical features were noted in a standardized form. The risk of steatosis and advanced fibrosis was assessed using commonly used algorithms (FLI, HSI, NAFLD-LFS, NAFLD ridge score, FIB-4 and NFS). Results In total 350 patients were included. Diagnostic imaging had been performed in 132 patients and of these, 34 (26%) had steatosis, which was not noted in the medical records in 16 (47%) patients. One patient with steatosis had been referred to a hepatologist. Of assessable patients, 71–97% had a high to intermediate risk of steatosis and 29–65% had an intermediate to high risk of advanced fibrosis according to the algorithms used. Conclusion This study indicates a high prevalence of NAFLD among T2DM patients in Swedish primary care. Patients with known NAFLD were followed up to a very low extent. Using fibrosis algorithms in primary health care would result in many patients needing further assessment in secondary care.

A clinical overview of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A guide to diagnosis, the clinical features, and complications-What the non-specialist needs to know.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has a rapidly rising prevalence worldwide and is the most common cause of liver disease in developed countries. In this article, we discuss the spectrum of disease of NAFLD with a focus on the earlier spectrum of the disease that is commonly encountered by non-specialists, as well as the hepatic and extra-hepatic associations of the disease. We discuss in detail the two common presentations of NAFLD, incidentally detected hepatic steatosis and asymptomatic raised liver enzymes, and provide an algorithm for management and continued to follow up for these patients. Considerations for the management of cardiovascular comorbidities in these patients are also discussed. Finally, we cover the topic of screening for NAFLD in high-risk populations.

Recent advances in the epidemiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in children.

Children with obesity are at risk for numerous health problems, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This review focuses on progress made in the epidemiology of NAFLD in children for the years 2015-2020. The estimated prevalence of NAFLD in children with obesity is 26%. The incidence of NAFLD in children has risen rapidly over the past decade. An understanding of the reasons for this rise is incomplete, but over the past 5 years, many studies have provided additional insight into the complexity of risk factors, diagnostic approaches, and associated comorbidities. Risk factors for NAFLD are wide-ranging, including perinatal factors involving both the mother and newborn, as well as environmental toxin exposure. Progress made in the noninvasive assessment will be critical to improving issues related to variability in approach to screening and diagnosis of NAFLD in children. The list of serious comorbidities observed in children with NAFLD continues to grow. Notably, for many of these conditions, such as diabetes and depression, the rates observed have exceeded the rates reported in children with obesity without NAFLD. Recent advancements reviewed show an increased awareness of this problem, while also calling attention to the need for additional research to guide successful efforts at prevention and treatment.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Its Association With Diabetes Mellitus.

There is a bidirectional relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The liver has a vital role in the pathophysiology of both diseases as it leads to the development of insulin resistance (IR), which in turn results in NAFLD and T2DM. It has been shown that T2DM increases the risk of NAFLD progression. Furthermore, the presence of NAFLD raises the probability of T2DM complications, which explains the increased rates of NAFLD screening in patients with T2DM. In addition, there are common management options for the two diseases. Lifestyle changes can play a role in the initial management of both diseases. Medications that are used to treat T2DM are also used in the management of NAFLD, such as metformin, thiazolidinediones (TZD), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues, and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitors. Bariatric surgery is often used as a last resort and has shown promising results. Lifestyle interventions with diet and exercise are important postoperatively to maintain the weight loss. There are many novel treatments that are being investigated for the treatment of NAFLD, targeting multiple pathophysiologic pathways. This review aims to shed some light on the intricate relationship between NAFLD and T2DM and how IR links both diseases. We also try to raise awareness among clinicians about this relationship and how the presence of one disease should raise a high index of suspicion for the existence of the other.

Association of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease with Body Fat Percentage in Normal-Weight Individuals

Background: Recent data have suggested that nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can occur in normal-weight subjects. This study examined the association of body fat percentage (BF%) with NAFLD and its risk factors in normal-weight individuals. Objectives: The present study aimed to explain the association of body fat with NAFLD and its cardiometabolic risk factors. Methods: A total of 59 subjects with body mass index (BMI) within the range of 18.5 - 24.9 kg/m2 were selected from referrals to two major university polyclinics in Shiraz, Iran, from April to June 2019. Fatty liver grade, anthropometric characteristics, body composition, and cardiometabolic risk factors were measured in this study. Results: Waist circumference (P = 0.012), fat mass (P &lt; 0.001), triglycerides (TG) (P = 0.027), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) (P = 0.007), and TG/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (P = 0.003) increased; however, skeletal muscle mass decreased (P &lt; 0.001) across the tertiles of BF%. The average of fatty liver grade was similar in the first and second tertiles; nevertheless, the fatty liver grade of participants in the third tertile was significantly higher (1.3 ± 0.9 vs. 0.4 ± 0.7; P = 0.005). In ordinal regression analysis, BF% (1.13; 95% CI: 1.04 - 1.22; P = 0.003), BMI (1.95; 95% CI: 1.02 - 3.74; P = 0.045), VLDL (1.77; 95% CI: 1.00 - 3.12; P = 0.049), and TG/HDL-C ratio (2.21; 95% CI: 1.26 - 3.86; P = 0.006) had positive associations with NAFLD; nonetheless, HDL-C (0.33; 95% CI: 0.16 - 0.67; P = 0.002) and dietary cholesterol (0.97; 95% CI: 0.95 - 0.997; P = 0.028) had inverse associations with NAFLD after the adjustments for age, gender, BMI, and physical activity. Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that within normal weight ranges, NAFLD occurs more frequently in individuals with higher BF%. In addition, BF% can be used as an important marker in NAFLD screening.

Association and interaction between vitamin D level and metabolic syndrome for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Previous studies have shown conflicting results regarding the association between hypovitaminosis D and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of this study is to explore the individual and combined effect of hypovitaminosis D and metabolic syndrome (MS) on NAFLD. In this cross-sectional study, 874 subjects were enrolled. 25(OH)D was assessed by a sequential competitive immuno-fluoro-assay method. The Fatty Liver Index (FLI) was used for NAFLD screening. Binary logistic regression and additive interaction were performed to investigate the association between vitamin D status, MS and NAFLD. Severe vitamin D deficiency was found to be positively related to NAFLD, with a higher risk in women than in men (OR = 6.4, 95% CI [2.8-15], p < 0.0001 vs. OR = 5.8, 95% CI [1.9-17.7], p = 0.002). In men, this association was partially masked by obesity. The additive interaction with MS was significant in women but not in men, the relative excess risk due to interaction was of 7.2, 95% CI [1.3-12.9], p = 0.02), the attributable proportion due to the combined effect was of 0.6, 95% CI [0.4-0.8], p < 0.0001. The interaction mechanism is synergistic; the synergy index: was of 2.9, 95% CI [1.6-5.3], p = 0.0006. A positive association has been found between severe vitamin D deficiency and NAFLD. Moreover, an excess risk in women combining both MS and severe vitamin D deficiency was quantified.

Significantly higher atherosclerosis risks in patients with obstructive sleep apnea and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

There is limited data on the relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), each associated with increased cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to determine the relationships between severity of OSA, degree of steatosis in NAFLD and cardiovascular risk via CIMT and atherosclerosis markers ie intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) an Lipoprotein-a (Lp(a)) in a group of patients with OSA. This was a cross-sectional, single center study. A total of 110 subjects between 18 to 65 years of age and diagnosed with OSA following sleep study examinations were recruited. Exclusion criteria included seropositive Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C, and significant alcohol intake. The prevalence of NAFLD was 81.8%. The mean CIMT (0.08±0.03 vs 0.06±0.01 cm, p = 0.001), ICAM-1 (334.53±72.86 vs 265.46±102.92 ng/mL, p = 0.001) and Lp(a) (85.41±52.56 vs 23.55±23.66 nmol/L, p<0.001) were significantly higher in the NAFLD group compared to the non-NAFLD group. Comparisons between the different groups showed significantly increasing levels of CIMT, ICAM-1 and Lp(a), lowest within the non-NAFLD, followed by the NAFLD 1 and NAFLD 2+3 groups. There was a significant positive correlation between degree of steatosis and the severity of OSA (r = 0.453, p<0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that patients with apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) of >30 were 52.77 (CI 6.34, 439.14) times more likely to have NAFLD compared to those with mild AHI (p<0.001). The prevalence of NAFLD is alarmingly high in this group of OSA patients. The degree of steatosis in patients with NAFLD was significantly correlated with severity of OSA, CIMT measurements, ICAM-1 and Lp(a). Our findings underscore screening for NAFLD in patients with OSA to ensure prompt risk stratification and management.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in type 2 diabetes - A specific entity?

Individuals with obesity or type 2 diabetes (T2D) have an increased risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In insulin-resistant states, altered adipose tissue function may be the initial abnormality underlying NAFLD. Hepatic lipid oversupply interferes with insulin signalling and mitochondrial function. In obese individuals, adaptation of hepatic mitochondrial respiration fails with the progression of NAFLD and can activate pro-inflammatory pathways. T2D as well as type 1 diabetes are associated with altered hepatic mitochondrial function. Screening for NAFLD remains challenging especially in those with diabetes because liver enzymes are often in the normal range and the performance of NAFLD scores is limited. Patients with T2D and severe insulin-resistant diabetes (SIRD) have the highest prevalence of NAFLD at diagnosis and the greatest risk of progression. In this subgroup, the single-nucleotide-polymorphism (SNP) rs738409(G) of the patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 (PNPLA3) gene is associated with high liver fat content and adipose tissue insulin resistance. This frequent SNP is also known to be associated with lean NAFLD so that genetic testing for this and other SNPs could improve future screening strategies to identify high-risk individuals. Although lifestyle modifications are effective, this approach is limited owing to difficulties with compliance and several classes of drugs are being tested to treat NAFLD. Antihyperglycaemic drugs such as glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA), sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and pioglitazone are promising and halt the progression of NAFLD. In conclusion, although NAFLD in diabetes may not be a separate entity, there are specific features to its pathogenesis and clinical management.

Validation of the Dallas Steatosis Index to Predict Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in the UK Biobank Population

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global public health crisis that affects one quarter of the world population.1 Preventing either cardiometabolic or liver-related complications by achieving weight loss and resolving hepatic steatosis would be the central goal of a NAFLD screening program in the primary care setting. Despite the overwhelming prevalence and the multimodal impact on health posed by NAFLD, specialty society guidelines do not recommend screening for NAFLD in the general population,2 partly owing to the as-yet unproven cost benefit.

Decreased Muscle-to-Fat Mass Ratio Is Associated with Low Muscular Fitness and High Alanine Aminotransferase in Children and Adolescent Boys in Organized Sports Clubs.

Decreased muscle-to-fat mass ratio (MFR) is associated with pediatric nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and may reduce muscular fitness. Regular exercise in sports clubs has not led to reductions in obesity in children and adolescents; they may have decreased MFR. Decreased MFR could cause reduced muscular fitness, which may put them at risk for NAFLD development. We investigated whether MFR is related to muscular fitness and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), to determine whether MFR could be used to screen for NAFLD in children and adolescent boys belonging to sports clubs. Altogether, 113 participants (aged 7–17 years) who underwent body composition, laboratory, and muscular fitness measurements during a medical checkup were divided into tertiles according to their MFR. Lower extremity muscular fitness values were significantly decreased in the lowest MFR tertile (p < 0.001); conversely, serum ALT levels were significantly increased (p < 0.01). Decreased MFR significantly increased the risk of elevated ALT, which requires screening for NAFLD, after adjusting for age, obesity, muscular fitness parameters, and metabolic risk factors (odds ratio = 8.53, 95% confidence interval = 1.60–45.6, p = 0.012). Physical fitness and body composition assessments, focusing on MFR, can be useful in improving performance and screening for NAFLD in children and adolescents exercising in sports clubs.

Prospective evaluation of the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and steatohepatitis in a large middle-aged US cohort

Large prospective studies to establish the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and steatohepatitis (NASH), are lacking. We prospectively assessed the prevalence and severity of NAFLD/NASH in a cohort of asymptomatic middle-aged Americans attending a colonoscopy class at a gastroenterology clinic. Screening for NAFLD was performed using magnetic resonance (MR)-based LiverMultiScan® proton density fat fraction (LMS-PDFF). MR exams also included corrected T1 and elastography for liver stiffness measurement (LSM). FibroScan® was also used to measure LSM. Participants with predetermined abnormal imaging parameters were proposed a liver biopsy to evaluate for NASH. Biopsies were read in a blinded fashion with consensus by two expert pathologists. The prevalence of NAFLD was determined by PDFF ≥ 5% or when PDFF and biopsy data available, by histological diagnosis of NAFLD. The prevalence of NASH was defined by biopsy. Of 835 participants, 664 subjects met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The mean age was 56 ± 6.4 years, 50% were male, the mean body mass index was 30.48 ± 5.46 kg/m2, and 52% were obese. The prevalence of NAFLD was 38% (95% CI 34-41%) and the prevalence of NASH was 14% (95% CI 12-17%). While no patient had cirrhosis on biopsy, significant fibrosis (F ≥ 2) was present in 5.9% (95% CI: 4-8%) and bridging fibrosis in 1.6% (95% CI: 1-3%). In a multivariable analysis, factors associated with the presence of NASH were race, obesity, and diabetes. Using state-of-the-art liver imaging modalities and reference biopsy, this study establishes an overall prevalence of NAFLD of 38% and NASH by biopsy of 14% in this cohort of asymptomatic middle-aged US adults. Serum Glycocholic Acid-to-Total Bile Acid Ratio Is Independently Associated with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction and Aims. Bile acids play an essential role in the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study was aimed at investigating the association of the serum glycocholic acid- (GCA-) to-total bile acid (TBA) ratio with NAFLD in the general population. Materials and Methods. A total of 6708 subjects (2859 cases with NAFLD and 3849 controls) were enrolled in the development cohort and additional 1568 subjects (784 cases with NAFLD and 784 controls) in an independent validation cohort. Demographic characteristics and biochemical data were compared between subjects with NAFLD and controls. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association of the GCA-to-TBA ratio with NAFLD. A novel model incorporating the GCA-to-TBA ratio was developed for screening NAFLD from the general population. Results. The serum TBA and GCA levels were significantly higher in subjects with NAFLD than in those without NAFLD (2.8 (2.0-4.2) μmol/L vs. 2.5 (1.8-3.7) μmol/L and 1.30 (1.10-1.53) μg/mL vs. 1.28 (1.08-1.50) μg/mL, respectively, all p ≤ 0.01 ), whereas the serum GCA-to-TBA ratio was significantly lower in subjects with NAFLD than in subjects without NAFLD (0.44 (0.33-0.60) vs. 0.48 (0.36-0.64), p ≤ 0.01 ). Logistic regression analysis showed that the GCA-to-TBA ratio was independently associated with NAFLD after adjustment for confounding factors (odds ratio: 0.81, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.71-0.92, p ≤ 0.01 ). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the novel developed GCA-to-TBA ratio score model in discriminating NAFLD was 0.84 (95% CI: 0.83-0.85) in the development cohort and was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.36-0.65) in the validation cohort. Conclusion. The serum GCA-to-TBA ratio is independently associated with NAFLD. A simple novel model incorporating the GCA-to-TBA ratio score has a good performance in discriminating NAFLD from the general population.

Prevalence of advanced liver fibrosis and steatosis in type-2 diabetics with normal transaminases: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUNDNonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have an intricate bidirectional relationship. Individuals with T2DM, not only have a higher prevalence of non-alcoholic steatosis, but also carry a higher risk of progression to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Experts still differ in their recommendations of screening for NAFLD among patients with T2DM.AIMTo study the prevalence of NAFLD and advanced fibrosis among our patient population with T2DM.METHODSDuring the study period (November 2018 to January 2020), 59 adult patients with T2DM and 26 non-diabetic control group individuals were recruited prospectively. Patients with known significant liver disease and alcohol use were excluded. Demographic data and lab parameters were recorded. Liver elastography was performed in all patients.RESULTSIn the study group comprised of patients with T2DM and normal alanine aminotransferase levels (mean 17.8 ± 7 U/L), 81% had hepatic steatosis as diagnosed by elastography. Advanced hepatic fibrosis (stage F3 or F4) was present in 12% of patients with T2DM as compared to none in the control group. Patients with T2DM also had higher number of individuals with grade 3 steatosis [45.8% vs 11.5%, (P < 0.00001) and metabolic syndrome (84.7% vs 11.5%, P < 0.00001)].CONCLUSIONA significant number of patients with T2DM, despite having normal transaminase levels, have NAFLD, grade 3 steatosis and advanced hepatic fibrosis as measured by liver elastography.

Evaluation of Different Anthropometric Indicators for Screening for Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Elderly Individuals.

Objective To explore the anthropometric indicators suitable for screening for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the elderly population. Methods This cross-sectional study screened subjects over 65 years, who had undergone a physical examination in 2019. Their height, weight, waist circumference, and fasting blood glucose and triglyceride levels were measured. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumstance (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), relative fat mass (RFM), ponderal index (PI), conicity index (CI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), and body shape index (ABSI) were calculated. Statistical analyses were performed using the Chi-square test, logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Subjects Of a total of 4985 subjects, 1173 diagnosed with NAFLD and 3812 without NAFLD were included. Results The NAFLD group had increased BMI, WC, WHtR, RFM, PI, CI, and LAP. ABSI was only significantly different in males between the groups. Logistic regression analysis showed that RFM was an effective prognostic factor for males with NAFLD, and LAP, BMI, and WC were effective prognostic factors for females. ROC curve analysis showed that LAP played a significant role in the prediction of NAFLD. Conclusion LAP is closely related to the occurrence of NAFLD and could be an efficient screening and treatment tool for NAFLD in the elderly people. Lay Summary. We conducted a screening and study of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in the elderly population by determining the association between obesity indexes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. We found that LAP is practical, easy-to-measure tool for screening and studying NAFLD in the high-risk community elderly population, making it a valuable indicator in research.
