An Investigation of The Connection of Bloom’s Taxonomy to the Core Mathematics Curriculum for Senior High Schools in Ghana

This paper attempts to preview the connection of Bloom's taxonomy to Ghana's Senior High School mathematics curriculum. Mathematics is a vital tool for economic growth and national development as a STEM subject. Bloom's taxonomy, which presents a hierarchical model, helps educators teach school mathematics to enable students to acquire basic Knowledge known as order thinking (LOT) skills and develop higher-order thinking (HOT) skills. The analysis of the mathematics syllabus concerning Bloom's taxonomy revealed that the syllabus concentrates more on the three fundamental skills in Bloom's hierarchy of teaching and assessment. Remember 18.1%, Understand 33.3%, and Apply 29.8%, totalling 81.2%, leaving only 18.8% for the top three HOT skills. The study recommends that Ghana adopt a curriculum model that focuses on teaching transversal skills that can churn out informed citizens rather than putting students under the shackles of tests.

Connectivity and Application of the Principle of Multiple Intelligences in the Three Domains of Learning Mathematics

The study aimed to examine how Gardner's Multiple Intelligences applied to Ghana's Senior High School's core mathematics curriculum and instruction. The Core Mathematics curriculum was the primary document reviewed for the study. The action verbs used in the objective, section teacher-learner activities section, and the evaluation section of the core mathematics syllabus were identified and grouped with respect to the multiple intelligences. The analysis revealed that the mathematics curriculum was linked to several intelligences, although some intelligence was underserved. The Senior High School Mathematics Curriculum fails to consider diverse learning styles and preferences. It should provide a diverse range of topics using various instructional techniques. However, children with different intelligences should not experience mathematics as a hindrance. A re-evaluation is necessary to address these issues.

The Influence of Augmented Reality-Based Learning Media on the Understanding of Mathematical Concepts in Elementary School Children

This research investigates the impact of Augmented Reality (AR) based learning media on the understanding of mathematical concepts among primary school children. Employing a literature review method, the study outlines recent findings in literature concerning the application of AR in mathematics education. The results indicate that the use of AR can enhance motivation, active participation, and the understanding of mathematical concepts among primary school children. AR's ability to present material in a more concrete and applicable form has a positive impact on the understanding of concepts that are often challenging for students at their cognitive development level. Despite challenges in implementation and infrastructure development, this research provides a foundation for the integration of AR in mathematics education in primary schools. It is recommended that the implementation of AR be carefully considered in the primary school mathematics curriculum with adequate teacher training and appropriate infrastructure investment.

Reasoning Skills in Mathematics Teaching: A Meta-Synthesis on Studies Conducted in Turkey

This research aims to analyze the results of studies conducted in Turkey on reasoning skills in mathematics teaching and to reveal what kind of trend there is in this field. Within the scope of this study, databases were searched with the keywords "reasoning"(muhakeme, akıl yürütme) and "reasoning skill" (Muhakeme becerisi, akıl yürütme becerisi), and the results were examined in accordance with the inclusion criteria regarding mathematics teaching. One hundred sixty-three studies were included. Each of the studies included in the meta-synthesis study was analyzed descriptively according to type, year, method, sample type and size, data collection tools, statistical analysis, learning field, keywords, reasoning type and purpose. In addition, the studies’ results were content analyzed and tabulated by coding the differences and similarities between them with a holistic approach. It has been determined that studies on the learning fields in the mathematics curriculum are mostly carried out in the field of learning numbers and operations in the secondary school mathematics curriculum. When evaluated in terms of reasoning types, almost half of the studies were conducted on mathematical reasoning. It has been observed that after mathematical reasoning, the most focus is on proportional reasoning. When the aims of the studies included in the research were examined, it was determined that the most focused ones were "examining the factors affecting reasoning skills", "measurement of reasoning skills" and "the effect of teaching practices on reasoning skills". In the studies examined, it was seen that there were 33 teaching practices whose effects on reasoning skills were examined.

The Evaluation of using Learning Videos for High School Mathematics Curriculum Subjects with Flipped Classroom Models on Learning Achievement in the IVET University Semarang

This research deals with the development of learning video media for high school mathematics curricula using the ADDIE stage model. This model, as the name implies, consists of five main phases or stages, namely (A) analysis, (D) design, (D) development, (I) implementation, and (E) evaluation. The implementation and evaluation phase was carried out in this second year, with an expanded test carried out in the mathematics education study program at IVET University Semarang in a fun and enjoyable way, with a posttest and a user response questionnaire with the following results: Based on research at IVET University Semarang, the results of the posttest were processed using The t-test obtained a result of 0% < 5%, then H0 was rejected. This means that we accept H1, which means that the results of learning mathematics with learning video media for high school mathematics curricula are better than conventional learning models, looking at the average learning achievement in the mean column, the group statistics table, it is obtained that the average of the experimental class was 85.50 while the average of the control class was 70.42. These results show that the learning outcomes of the experimental class were better than those of the control class. R Square value is 0.825 = 82.5%. This value means that the effect of virtual lab media on learning achievement is 82.5%. In comparison, 17.5% of learning achievement was influenced by other variables outside of the independent variables in this study.

Web-Based Window Shopping: A Learning Model in High School's Mathematics Curriculum

The post-pandemic adaptation demands technological innovations in sustainable learning to support mathematics curriculums. This research aims to develop the Web-based Window Shopping (WBWS) in high school mathematics curriculum with ADDIE procedure. The data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and tests. The stages of research comprised analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The experts' validation test results showed that the aspects of materials and medium achieved an average score of 82,75%. Meanwhile, the trial test results showed that the developed WBWS is worth implementing, with the average percentage of effectiveness reaching 83,33%. The results suggest that the creation of WBWS as a web-based learning model for mathematics curriculum is not only feasible but also meets the educational needs of high school students. Teachers and students can use this web-based learning model as an alternative for implementing the independent curriculum on mathematics learning.

To delineate and substantiate the nuances of developing information and communication competence in students during mathematics lessons, we conducted an extensive analysis of state educational regulations, including the Law of Ukraine "On Education," the New Ukrainian School Concept, the Concept of Digital Competence Development, the State Standard of Basic Secondary Education, and mathematics curriculum materials. We also scrutinized sources available on the Internet related to international educational monitoring studies and synthesized both international and domestic pedagogical experience. The study asserts that the formation of information and communication competence in students during mathematics education arises from the demands of the school mathematics curriculum. Mandatory learning outcomes in the mathematical education sector encompass requirements characterizing students' information and communication competence. The process of learning mathematics should facilitate not only the overall development of students' personalities but also the acquisition of a system of mathematical knowledge, improvement of problem-solving skills, and an understanding of the importance of mathematics as the language of science, technology, and innovation. Additionally, students should recognize the significance of information and communication technologies in effectively addressing mathematical challenges. The integrated use of information technologies in the educational process, especially in the context of distance and blended learning, contributes to the development of students' information and communication competence. This is contingent upon the methodically sound selection of educational content, didactic materials, and teaching strategies by educators. It is elucidated that the primary means of cultivating students' information and communication competence lies in the specialized system of educational tasks and examples present in school mathematics textbooks. These materials are designed to foster students' personal qualities, creativity, critical thinking, and their ability to generate and articulate their thoughts.

교육과정 변천에 따른 고등학교 1학년 수학의 변천 분석

High school 1st year mathematics has been considered explicitly or implicitly as a common curriculum or a common subject in Korea. Which changes have occurred in high school 1st year mathematics according to changes of national mathematics curriculum? In this paper we investigate changes of high 1st year mathematics according to changes of curriculum focused on changes of contents of algebra. For this we first analyze literature including national mathematics curriculum from the 1st national mathematics curriculum to the 2022 revised national mathematics curriculum, research reports, mathematics textbooks and so on. As the result of our analysis, we identified that high school 1st year mathematics has always played a role as a basic and common subject in view of its subject name and its place in high school mathematics curriculum for each curriculum period. And we alos identified that there were some contents of algebra, that is, sequence, exponent and logarithm, etc. included in high school 1st year mathematics and 2nd or 3rd year mathematics alternately, and other contents of algebra disappeared in mathematics curriculum. Our analysis results seem to be basic data in discussing the range of contents of common mathematics curriculum for citizens in future.

Challenges in applying principles from cognitive science to the design of a school mathematics curriculum

AbstractThere are increasingly frequent calls for school mathematics curricula to be informed by robust research evidence. One approach to achieving this is designing evidence‐informed learning and teaching resources for the classroom. In this paper, we reflect on our experiences of designing a free and fully resourced complete set of secondary mathematics curriculum materials. We explore in detail the challenges we have encountered in our attempts to apply principles from the cognitive theory of multimedia learning. We focus on tensions we have experienced when simultaneously applying multiple principles and balancing these with other educational considerations. Specifically, we consider trade‐offs between redundancy versus clarity, seductive details versus richness, personalisation and emotional design versus abstraction, spatial contiguity and signalling versus parsimony, and pre‐training and worked examples versus exploration. We examine the choices and dilemmas we faced, and illustrate our emerging attempts to resolve these tensions through presenting multiple examples from our design work. We conclude with recommendations about how tensions among these design principles might be navigated in curriculum design and we suggest possible avenues for further research in this area.

Dilemma in Designing a Mathematics Curriculum: Descriptive Versus Prescriptive Approach

Developing Nepal's mathematics curriculum is a challenging task, requiring a crucial decision between prescriptive and descriptive curriculum approaches. This study examines prescriptive and descriptive curriculum approaches, their features, and their importance in developing school-level mathematics curriculum. Conversely, the Nepalese school mathematics curriculum predominantly exhibits a perspective and vertical structure. This study conducts a comprehensive comparative analysis of prescriptive and descriptive curriculum approaches, evaluating their objectives, limitations, and applicability. Based on the available literature, the study suggests that the collaborative curriculum model may be a suitable approach. This model involves the central government in curriculum benchmark design, with state governments defining specific educational goals and actively incorporating local input, ensuring a holistic approach to shaping the school math curriculum. The collaborative model shows promise in effectively addressing contemporary challenges in math teaching and learning issues in school mathematics, ensuring inclusivity and relevance for math learners, and paving the way for a brighter future. Additionally, this study highlights the importance of prioritizing learner identity, fostering ownership of learning, and addressing the unique needs of local communities, states, and the nation. This contributes to greater equity in society and globally.

Mathematics education needs to be taught meaningfully using problem contexts and facilitating reasoning, modeling, collaboration, and connection with other mathematical concepts. This community service project aimed to train primary school teachers in developing Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) 'icebergs' utilizing the local cultural context of Magetan. Twelve primary school teachers in Magetan participated in the RME training, which focused on developing the RME 'icebergs' through exploratory and contextual approaches. The research method included face-to-face sessions, group discussions, and individual tasks to design relevant learning materials. The training results showed significant improvement in the understanding and application of RME. Before the training, teachers faced challenges in engaging students in grades 4-6 and in using local context in mathematics teaching. Post-training, 67% of the teachers demonstrated a positive change in their teaching approach, shifting from lecture and drill methods to an RME-based approach. Additionally, 50% of the participants successfully developed RME icebergs that integrated problems within the local cultural context of Magetan. The training evaluation indicated that over 50% of participants responded positively, showing increased knowledge about realistic mathematics and the application of culturally contextualized problems. The conclusion of this study asserts that the RME approach, especially when combined with local cultural context, is effective in enhancing mathematics teaching skills and enriching numeracy literacy among primary school teachers. The implications of this research suggest integrating RME into the primary school mathematics curriculum to develop critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills in students, in line with the demands of the 21st century

고등학교 수학과 교육과정 편성·운영 현황 분석

The high school credit system, in which students select and complete subjects according to their career and aptitude based on basic knowledge and academic ability, is set to be fully introduced in 2025. In general high schools, the CSAT is the factor that has the greatest influence on the organization of unit school curriculum along with the high school credit system. Therefore, for the smooth landing of the high school credit system, it is necessary to analyze the influence of these factors on the organization and operation of the school curriculum. In this study, the current status of curriculum organization in 213 schools belonging to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education was investigated and the current status of curriculum organization was analyzed, focusing on the relationship with the selection tendency of optional subjects in CSAT math section. As a result of the analysis, the ratio of elective subjects in CSAT math section was highly related to the organization of class hours in the unit school curriculum. Additionally, it was confirmed that there was a higher correlation with ‘the number of opportunity units’ that students could actually choose than ‘the number of units organized’ for each subject of the unit school curriculum. The results of this study will serve as basic data for the implementation of the high school credit system according to the 2022 revised curriculum, while providing implications for the organization of elective subjects in the high school mathematics curriculum.

What Does Symmetry Look Like? A Qualitative Research Based on Mental Images

Symmetry, located within the field of transformation geometry, is a mathematical concept that plays an extremely important role as a problem-solving technique. Despite this, it seems that it is rarely used in solving mathematical problems in secondary school. This research was carried out to reveal the mental images of secondary school students regarding the concept of symmetry in the secondary school mathematics curriculum. In the study conducted based on a qualitative perspective, the metaphors developed by the students regarding the concept of symmetry and the visuals they drew were examined. The study was conducted in the spring semester of the 2022-2023 academic year with 223 students studying in the 5th, 6th and 7th grades at a public school in Ankara, selected according to the convenient sampling method. Content analysis was used to analyze and interpret the data obtained from the students. Looking at the results of the research; It turns out that secondary school students generally perceive the concept of symmetry as "having similar functionality", "visually overlapping" and "perfect and meeting in differences".

Examining the Effect of Teaching with Ethnomathematics on Students' Problem-Solving Skills on Transformation Geometry

This research aims to examine the impact of teaching with ethnomathematics on students' problem-solving skills in transformation geometry and their skills in problem-solving steps. The study was carried out with an experimental design, one of the quantitative research methods. The sample was determined as 42 eighth-grade students in two classes using the purposive sampling method. One of these classes was randomly assigned as the experimental group and the other as the control group. In the research, the "Problem-Solving Test (PST)" was used as a data-gathering tool, and the "Problem-Solving Skill Scoring Key" put forward by Baki (2006) was used in the analysis of the data. According to this key, student responses were graded and the results were noted for the data analysis phase. The results obtained were analyzed with the SPSS20 program. It was seen that teaching using ethnomathematics elements improved students' skills in the steps of understanding the problem, preparing a plan, and plan implementing at the end of the research. The instruction did not have a significant effect on student skills at the evaluation stage. At the same time, teaching using ethnomathematical elements increased students' problem-solving skills and solution skills in daily life problems and traditional problems. In this context, it is recommended to integrate cultural elements into the secondary school mathematics curriculum, and in this way, it is thought that it can contribute to the development of students' problem-solving skills.

Examining the Integration of Model Concept Literacy in Mathematics Instruction for Junior High School Students

Compulsory Education Mathematics Curriculum Standards [1] emphasizes the core literacy of model concept, and there are many current studies around model concept, but there are few analyses aimed at the implementation of the model concept literacy of the junior high school mathematics curriculum standard in the junior high school mathematics classroom teaching, so this paper analyzes the feasibility of and strategies for the implementation of the model concept based on the connotation of the model concept and the current status quo of junior high school mathematics teaching. Teachers can take the form of collective lesson planning to strengthen the understanding of the connotation of the model concept; introduce the materials related to mathematical learning that occurs in real life into the classroom promptly, and show them to students in the classroom in a contextual way; explain the process of mathematical modeling, knowledge points, analytical ideas, and other basic knowledge, and use a variety of teaching methods such as inspirational, discursive, exploratory, and practical, to create a relaxed and free learning atmosphere; promote students' mastery of equations, inequalities, functions, and other knowledge, creating opportunities to cultivate model concept literacy, consciously carrying out practical teaching activities, improving the ability to use mathematical models to solve problems, etc., to be able to truly implement the model concept in the classroom.

Promoting citizenship education in the mathematics curriculum: The Malawi secondary school experience

Background: Malawi recognises the importance of citizenship education (CE) as evidenced by its stated goals of education. In secondary schools, CE is offered explicitly in an elective subject called Social Studies. Consequently, some students do not study it. Mathematics is a compulsory subject; therefore, integrating CE would benefit all learners.Aim: Investigating the extent to which the Malawi secondary school mathematics curriculum promotes CE.Setting: Urban classroom with two experienced mathematics teachers.Methods: The first phase involved document analysis of the intended curriculum’s ability to promote CE. The second phase focussed on analysing mathematics lessons and how they extent they promoted CE.Results: The findings show that the curriculum promotes CE to a large extent, but this varies in the specific curriculum materials and the mathematics topics. The teaching also varies; learner-centred lessons offered more opportunities for CE than teacher-centred lessons.Conclusion: We argue that providing for CE in mathematics should go beyond listing in the school curriculum. There should be more clear guidance on how to integrate it into mathematics teaching.Contribution: Our study contributes in at least two ways: (1) Adds to literature on mathematics and CE drawn from Malawi context, which differs from contexts in most literature. (2) Adds to methodology by introducing a rating for CE in curriculum materials and analysis of lessons for CE through the lens of learner-centred continuum.

Application of Embodied Learning in Middle School Mathematics Education

This paper explores the application of embodied learning as a pedagogical approach in mathematics education for middle school students. The main body of the paper is organized into three essential sections. Firstly, practical strategies for implementing embodied learning are discussed. These strategies encompass teaching through body movements, employing hands-on materials, and integrating technology such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and interactive manipulatives. Secondly, the challenges and limitations faced in the context of embodied learning are examined. These include the resistance of teachers lacking professional training, the scarcity of effective teaching resources, and limitations pertaining to interactivity and student participation. Lastly, the paper emphasizes the implementation of embodied learning in the middle school mathematics curriculum. Specifically, it highlights the integration of embodied learning into lesson plans and activities, considerations for effective classroom management and instruction, and the significance of providing professional development and support for teachers. Overall, this paper provides valuable insights into the potential benefits and considerations associated with the incorporation of embodied learning in middle school mathematics education. By presenting practical strategies, addressing challenges, and emphasizing the importance of proper implementation, the paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge on this innovative pedagogy.
