Dr. R. J. Pumphrey

DR. R. J. PUMPHBEY, who succeeds Prof. Orton, has for many years been associated with or on the staff of the Zoological Deparment at Cambridge. Going into residence in 1925 and winning the Frank Smart Prize in 1999. he has held an unusually wide range of distinuished research appointments,including Rockefeller and Beit fellowships. Since 1946 he has been an assistant director of research and as such primarily concerned with problems of sensory physiology. He is best known for his outstanding contributions to our knowledge of the auditory and visual functions in lower organisms. Much of this work involves a highly specialized and biophysical approach ; but the outstanding feature of its results is the extent to which they provide a much clearer and more convincing picture of the rolo of the sense organs in the everyday life of the organisms. This combination of intellectual acuity and wide-angled vision augurs well for the future of his new Department. Dr. Pumphrey is unusually well equipped to deal with the relationship of university departments to the teaching of biology in schools, for he has played a very active part in framing the syllabuses now in force for school and higher certificate examinations ; with a colleague, at Manchester, not uninterested in such matters, there is little fear of undue stagnation.

TWO "Educational Papers" have recently been published by the British Social Hygiene Council. No. 1 deals with "Biology in the Secondary Modern School", by Frank Tyrer, while No. 2 is concerned with "Social Biology for Sixth Forms", by Eric Lucas. Presumably, coming from such a source, they may be looked upon as propaganda or, more correctly, information of use to those who sympathize with the ideals of the British Social Hygiene Council, and, in this case, are actively concerned with the spread of those ideals, for they are both pamphlets of primary use to teachers. Presumably again, they must have been passed by an editorial board or at least an editor. But what is most puzzling is how two such completely diverse pamphlets could have been approved by the same editor, for, if either one points the good way to teaching the subject then, without any shadow of doubt, the other points in the opposite direction.

Biology Teaching in Schools and Universities

ON March 24 the Association of British Zoologists met in the rooms of the Zoological Society of London, with Prof. James Ritchie in the chair. The morning session was devoted to a discussion of the interrelationship of biology teaching in schools and universities.

Sixth Imperial Social Hygiene Congress

THE sixth Imperial Social Hygiene Congress will be held at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Keppel Street, London, W.C.I on July 3–7 under the presidency of Sir Basil Blackett. On July 3, the presidential address will be delivered, and the rest of the Congress will be divided into a series of discussions including such topics as the effect on established social customs of modern knowledge and economic conditions; changes in the outlook on prostitution; biology and healthâ the teaching of biology in schools and colleges; conference of teachers of biology; methods of dealing with venereal disease in the defence forces of different nations; the training, etc., of health visitors, nurses and mid-wives; venereal disease administration and the supply of educational and cultural films. Progress reports from Great Britain and the Dominions concerning different branches of social hygiene will be presented at the Congress. Arrangements have been made for visits to various institutions of interest to the delegates, a special display of films, and an exhibition of simple equipment used in biological teaching. Further information concerning the Congress can be obtained from the Secretary, British Social Hygiene Council, Carteret House, Carteret Street, London, S.W.1.

The Teaching of Biology in Schools and Training Colleges

BIOLOGY, as here considered, is not that of the specialist in zoology or botany, but rather that for which a place is claimed in the general education of all pupils, and especially of those in primary and secondary schools. In addition to minor, but not unimportant, objects, the chief aim of such general biology is rightly stated to be the stimulation of interest and curiosity, and to produce enjoyment, both aesthetic and intellectual, of Nature. The opening chapters of this useful little book contain an eloquent apologia of biology, based upon a consideration of its values and aims, and of the psychological factors which should influence the selection of material and the methods of teaching. The teacher who would be ready to give an answer for his faith in biological teaching will find here his brief set out in excellent style. In subsequent chapters the author has constantly in mind the students at training colleges. Though, perhaps, she says nothing that is entirely new on courses of Nature study and the more advanced work, she has nevertheless done good service to all teachers of biology in bringing together, and more or less codifying, the general principles by which all should be guided, and not less in pointing out the many pitfalls that beset the path of the inexperienced. Stress is very properly laid on the importance of presenting biology as a study of living things.

Botany at the British Association

THE time of Section K was considerably occupied in o joint meetings with other sections. Thus there was a joint discussion with Section D on “The Physical Basis of Heredity,” of which an account will be found in “Zoology at the British Association” (NATURE, September 19, p. 530) and another with Sections D and L on “The Teaching of Biology in Schools,” which is described in “Education at the British Association” (NATURE, September 12, p. 505).
