The Impacts of Dust Storms With Different Transport Pathways on Aerosol Chemical Compositions and Optical Hygroscopicity of Fine Particles in the Yangtze River Delta

AbstractAerosol physicochemical properties during two dust storms (DS1: March 30–31, and DS2: May 7–8) are measured in 2021 in Nanjing, aiming to investigate the impacts of dust storms on aerosol chemical compositions and optical hygroscopicity in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD). During DS1, the dust air masses are transported in the lower atmosphere and pass through the inlands and sea areas before reaching the YRD region. During DS2, the dust air masses are transported in the upper atmosphere and pass through the inlands only. Both of them are accompanied by an increase in black carbon (BC) mass fraction and a decrease in nitrate mass fraction in fine particles (PM2.5, particles with diameters less than 2.5 μm) near the surface. However, the impacts on the mass fractions of organics or sulfate are adverse between DS1 and DS2. During dust‐influence periods the enlarged mass ratios of sulfate to nitrate (greater than 4) promote the occurrence of deliquescent behavior of ambient aerosols although dust aerosols can significantly suppress aerosol optical hygroscopicity. To improve model simulations of aerosol optical hygroscopicity, it is necessary to use a segment parameterization to describe aerosol light scattering enhancement factor during dust‐influence periods. The closure study of optical hygroscopicity parameters with two different methods reveals the impact of aerosol scattering Ångström exponent on the estimation of optical hygroscopicity parameter. The results highlight that the impact of dust storms on aerosol chemical compositions and optical hygroscopicity are different for DS events with different transport pathways.

Revisiting integrating nephelometer measurements

Integrating nephelometers are designed to measure the scattering coefficient, bsp, of an aerosol introduced into its sampling chamber. They have been and are used extensively in laboratory studies and short-term intensive aerosol characterization studies to validate and improve optical aerosol models. They are used to measure long-term temporal and spatial trends of the particle scattering coefficient, and to measure trends in the scattering enhancement factor, f(RH). The National Park Service (NPS) has operated Optec NGN nephelometers with an open sampling chamber, referred to as NGNambient, designed to measure total (coarse plus fine) particle scattering at near ambient relative humidity (RH). However, the NGN is no longer manufactured and will be replaced with Ambilabs 2WIN nephelometers. An intercomparison study was initiated to compare the NGNambient, an enclosed heated NGN, two 2WIN nephelometers, one held at RH ≤ 40% and another modified to sample at near ambient RH, and a TSI (Shoreview, MN, USA).The objective of the study was to evaluate the suitability of the 2WIN to replace the NGNambient and more generally to assess the suitability of the 2WIN instrument to be used to track long term trends in bsp and f(RH) values. The two 2WIN's, TSI and the heated NGN have enclosed sampling chambers with PM2.5 inlets. Measurements of particle physical and chemical properties and sampling chamber RH allowed for an assessment of the inter-comparability of relationships between optical models and nephelometer measurements. Heating of the sampling chamber to reduce RH to less than 40% did not significantly volatilize particle nitrate but heating to reduce the RH to near 20% did. It was also determined that measurement of the scattering enhancement function, f(RH), was underestimated in this study, by about 20% for RH levels of 70% or greater, when the reference RH nephelometer was held at RH ≤ 40% compared to when the RH ≤ 10%. The study highlighted the importance of careful calibration of the instrument and careful documentation of the sampling chamber environment in which the measurement is made. Knowing precisely the RH in the sensor volume is critical to the interpretation of measured bsp levels. Monitoring of long-term temporal and spatial trends should be done either with the sampling chamber at or near ambient RH to track changes in ambient bsp or at RH ≤ 10% to understand changes in particulate mass concentrations contributing to bsp. Understanding changes in f(RH) over time and space should be done with the reference bsp at RH ≤ 10%. The lower RH levels should be achieved by some method other than heating the chamber to avoid volatilization of the aerosol species such as ammonium nitrate.

Heterodimers with various bonding positions: Synthesis, plasmon coupling and surface enhanced Raman scattering

The novel plasmonic heterodimer with an adjustable self-assembled hot spot is synthesized via the bonding of single core-shell Au@Ag nanocube (Au@Ag NC) and varisized Au nanosphere (Au NS) based on the biotin-streptavidin interaction between single and ensemble assemblies. Due to the various bonding positions, three modes of heterodimers nanostructures (Middle, Vicinity, and Vertice modes) are prepared, and an obvious hot spot generates between the nanosphere and nanocube, showing different characteristics for surface plasmonic resonance effect. The obtained surface enhanced Raman scattering enhancement factors for the three modes of nanostructures have a narrow distribution and can be controlled in order of magnitude via adjusting the dimension of Au NS on single Au@Ag NC. Specifically, the heterodimer with Vertice mode can significant enhance the electric field in the bonding position, which reflects the synergistic action for the inter-particle plasmon coupling effect and the lightning rod effect. This microstructure and corresponding optical characteristic of the heterodimers are of great significance for research in related fields, including plasmonic device, biological detection, and in situ tracking in cells.

Parameterization of polydisperse aerosol optical properties during hygroscopic growth

Aerosol water uptake and the related influence on its optical properties owing to the hygroscopic growth of polydisperse aerosols have a significant effect on air quality and climate. This study develops an analytical parameterization for a single hygroscopic optical parameter and the scattering enhancement factor for polydisperse aerosol sizes. Polydisperse lognormal size distributions for geometric mean diameters of 0.05–1 μm and geometric standard deviations of 1.3–2.5 are considered with real refractive indices between 1.35-1.6. The analytical expression obtained for the optical parameter is compared to Mie theory and reasonable agreements within the size range investigated in this study are observed. Further, our results show that the analytical expression could express polydispersed aerosol optical properties as a function of geometric mean diameter and geometric standard deviation of a lognormal distribution and the refractive index. The obtained analytical expression can be efficiently used for 3D models with a reduced computational burden.

Small angle approximation for the lidar return from clouds and fogs

The paper is aimed at the inter-comparison of the small angle approximation (SAA) for the lidar return with Monte Carlo calculations at small receiver field of views, where the SAA can be used for the evaluation of lidar signals from clouds and fogs. The diffraction component of light scattering by a local volume of a cloudy medium is fully taken into account and the geometrical part of light scattering field has been neglected. It has been found that the derived approximation provides useful approximation for the simulation of lidar signals from a cloudy medium close to its boundary, where the contribution of small-angle light scattering and propagation on the path from the cloud boundary to the observation point and back is significant. It has been found that the multiple light scattering enhancement factor A in the framework of the SSA for clouds with the same half - width parameter μ of the droplet size distribution depends just on two main parameters: optical depth τand the scale parameter s, which is equal to the ratio of the effective scattering angle to the receiver field of view.

Relative Humidity Dependence of Growth Factor and Real Refractive Index for Sea Salt/Malonic Acid Internally Mixed Aerosols

AbstractSea salt aerosols (SSAs) often mix with organic matter via sea‐to‐air emission, photochemical oxidation, and atmospheric transport, which change particle hygroscopicity and real refractive index (RRI), thereby the radiative effects. However, the influence of water uptake and organic matters on radiative effects is not well understood. In this study, relative humidity (RH)‐dependent growth factor (GF), light scattering enhancement factor, RRI (nmea), and radiative forcing efficiency (RFE) in the visible spectrum of SSAs/malonic acid (MA) internally mixed aerosols were investigated. Our results showed that MA‐mediated SSAs readily absorbed water even at low RH but suppressed hygroscopic growth at high RH. The discrepancy between Zdanovskii‐Stokes‐Robinson predictions and measured GF indicated that the suppressing effect on size caused by produced malonate salts in chloride depletion became more evident as MA content increased. RRI in the visible spectrum decreased as MA got enriched and approached toward water's RRI at high RH, resulting in a less cooling effect. The increasing RH reduced RFE both by decreasing RRI and increasing particle size substantially. Ignoring the effect of MA on particle size and RRI under varied RH, errors in RFE at 525 nm up to 25% could be induced. Volume mixing rule performs well in predicting the RRI of mixed aerosols in dry conditions, while the retrieved difference of 0.061 between volume mixing RRI nvol and nmea would make the error in RFE up to 1.15 W·m−2·Aerosol optical depth−1 at 87% RH. Our study helps understand the impact of water content and dicarboxylic acids on the direct radiative effects of SSAs.

Generalization of Self-Assembly Toward Differently Shaped Colloidal Nanoparticles for Plasmonic Superlattices.

Periodic superlattices of noble metal nanoparticles have demonstrated superior plasmonic properties compared to randomly distributed plasmonic arrangements due to near-field coupling and constructive far-field interference. Here, a chemically driven, templated self-assembly process of colloidal gold nanoparticles is investigated and optimized, and the technology is extended toward a generalized assembly process for variously shaped particles, such as spheres, rods, and triangles. The process yields periodic superlattices of homogenous nanoparticle clusters on a centimeter scale. Electromagnetically simulated absorption spectra and corresponding experimental extinction measurements demonstrate excellent agreement in the far-field for all particle types and different lattice periods. The electromagnetic simulations reveal the specific nano-cluster near-field behavior, predicting the experimental findings provided by surface-enhanced Raman scatteringmeasurements. It turns out that periodic arrays of spherical nanoparticles produce higher surface-enhancedRamanscatteringenhancement factors than particles with less symmetry as a result of very well-defined stronghotspots.

Additional Important Considerations in Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Enhancement Factor Measurements

Despite considerable progress, the issues for precise evaluation of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate enhancement factor (EF) have not yet been completely solved until now. Herein, we verify that key aspects of probe molecules including initial concentration, footprint, and diffusion kinetics need to be taken into account for the experimental SERS EF measurement. The three factors collectively affect the surface coverage and thereby the determination of the number of probe molecules on the SERS substrate. We recommend that the measurement of the SERS EFs should be performed with complete surface coverage of probe molecules at steady-state equilibrium using relatively high initial concentrations. It has been demonstrated for the first time that the SERS EFs are independent of the initial concentration of probe molecules when exceeding the threshold initial concentration for complete surface coverage. This study highlights the importance of probe molecules in terms of diffusion kinetics and surface coverage for the accurate determination of the SERS EFs, which has yet to be addressed in the literature.

Embedded information of aerosol type, hygroscopicity and scattering enhancement factor revealed by the relationship between PM2.5 and aerosol optical depth

Satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) provides an alternative way to depict the spatial distribution of near-surface PM2.5. In this study, a mathematical formulation of how PM2.5 is related to AOD is presented. When simplified to a linear equation, a functional dependence of the slope on the aerosol type, scattering enhancement factor f(RH), and boundary layer height is revealed, while the influence of the vertical aerosol profile is embedded in the intercept. Specifically, we focus on the effects of aerosol properties and employ a new aerosol index (Normalized Gradient Aerosol Index, NGAI) for classifying aerosol subtypes. The combination of AOD difference at shorter wavelengths over longer-wavelength AOD from AERONET data could distinguish and subclassify aerosol types previously indistinguishable by AE (i.e., urban-industrial pollution, U/I, and biomass burning, BB). AOD-PM2.5 regressions are performed on these aerosol subtypes at various relative humidity (RH) levels. The results suggest that BB aerosols are nearly hydrophobic until the RH exceeds 80 %, while the AOD-PM2.5 regressions for U/I depend on RH levels. Moreover, the scattering enhancement factor f(RH) can be calculated by taking the ratio of intercepts between dry and humidity conditions, which is proposed and tested for the first time in this study. Our results show an f(RH ≥ 80 %) of ∼2.6 for U/I-dominated aerosols, whereas the value is not over 1.5 for BB aerosols. The f(RH) can be further used to derive the optical hygroscopicity parameter (κsca), demonstrating that the NGAI can be used to exploit differences in aerosol hygroscopicity and improve the AOD-PM2.5 relationship.

Quantitative Study of Plasmonic Gold Nanostar Geometry Toward Optimal SERS Detection

Complex shapes of gold nanostars (GNS) have been the major obstacle to the comprehensive understanding of the rich plasmonic phenomena of GNS. We conducted extensive, systematic numerical study of far-field and near-field spectral responses of GNS for varying geometrical parameters (e.g., number of spikes, spike tip angle, and spike-to-core ratio) to elucidate the relationship between the optical property and the geometry of GNS. We found that symmetric configurations of GNS spikes generated both dipole and quadrupole localized surface plasmon (LSP) modes, their hybridization resulted in the final near-field intensity at the spike tips, and there existed a specific GNS geometry that optimized the hybridization and thus the E-field intensity for any given wavelength. From these results, we further identified the shapes of GNS that generated the strongest Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) enhancement factors in the visible and NIR spectral range. Hence, our results provide guiding principles in determining the optimal geometry of GNS for SERS applications with any choice of excitation wavelength.

SERS activity of carbon nanotubes modified by silver nanoparticles with different particle sizes

A two-dimensional (2D) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is fabricated by decorating carbon nanotube (CNT) films with Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) in different sizes, via simple and low-cost chemical reduction method and self-assembling method. The change of Raman and SERS activity of carbon nanotubes/Ag nanoparticles (CNTs/AgNPs) composites with varying size of AgNPs are investigated by using rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a probe molecule. Meanwhile, the scattering cross section of AgNPs and the distribution of electric field of CNTs/AgNPs composite are simulated through finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) wavelength is redshifted as the size of AgNPs increases, and the intensity of SERS and electric field increase with AgNPs size increasing. The experiment and simulation results show a Raman scattering enhancement factor (EF) of 108 for the hybrid substrate.

A global study of hygroscopicity-driven light-scattering enhancement in the context of other in situ aerosol optical properties

Abstract. The scattering and backscattering enhancement factors (f(RH) and fb(RH)) describe how aerosol particle light scattering and backscattering, respectively, change with relative humidity (RH). They are important parameters in estimating direct aerosol radiative forcing (DARF). In this study we use the dataset presented in Burgos et al. (2019) that compiles f(RH) and fb(RH) measurements at three wavelengths (i.e., 450, 550 and 700 nm) performed with tandem nephelometer systems at multiple sites around the world. We present an overview of f(RH) and fb(RH) based on both long-term and campaign observations from 23 sites representing a range of aerosol types. The scattering enhancement shows a strong variability from site to site, with no clear pattern with respect to the total scattering coefficient. In general, higher f(RH) is observed at Arctic and marine sites, while lower values are found at urban and desert sites, although a consistent pattern as a function of site type is not observed. The backscattering enhancement fb(RH) is consistently lower than f(RH) at all sites, with the difference between f(RH) and fb(RH) increasing for aerosol with higher f(RH). This is consistent with Mie theory, which predicts higher enhancement of the light scattering in the forward than in the backward direction as the particle takes up water. Our results show that the scattering enhancement is higher for PM1 than PM10 at most sites, which is also supported by theory due to the change in scattering efficiency with the size parameter that relates particle size and the wavelength of incident light. At marine-influenced sites this difference is enhanced when coarse particles (likely sea salt) predominate. For most sites, f(RH) is observed to increase with increasing wavelength, except at sites with a known dust influence where the spectral dependence of f(RH) is found to be low or even exhibit the opposite pattern. The impact of RH on aerosol properties used to calculate radiative forcing (e.g., single-scattering albedo, ω0, and backscattered fraction, b) is evaluated. The single-scattering albedo generally increases with RH, while b decreases. The net effect of aerosol hygroscopicity on radiative forcing efficiency (RFE) is an increase in the absolute forcing effect (negative sign) by a factor of up to 4 at RH = 90 % compared to dry conditions (RH < 40 %). Because of the scarcity of scattering enhancement measurements, an attempt was made to use other more commonly available aerosol parameters (i.e., ω0 and scattering Ångström exponent, αsp) to parameterize f(RH). The majority of sites (75 %) showed a consistent trend with ω0 (higher f(RH = 85 %) for higher ω0), while no clear pattern was observed between f(RH = 85 %) and αsp. This suggests that aerosol ω0 is more promising than αsp as a surrogate for the scattering enhancement factor, although neither parameter is ideal. Nonetheless, the qualitative relationship observed between ω0 and f(RH) could serve as a constraint on global model simulations.

Approximated expression of the hygroscopic growth factor for polydispersed aerosols

Hygroscopic growth of aerosols plays an important role in the characterization of atmospheric aerosols. Physico-chemical and optical properties of aerosols are dependent on relative humidity (RH) as well as on their size and composition. In this study, scattering enhancement factors, f(RH), for polydispersed aerosols were approximated. f(RH) of ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate (AS) and NaCl aerosols (ss) were considered under the assumption of externally mixed aerosols. f(RH) was calculated using the Mie theory for polydispersed aerosols at a given RH and corresponding water uptake (denoted as fMie(RH)). f(RH) was approximated as a quadratic function of RH (denoted as fapp(RH)). The obtained approximated f(RH) or fapp(RH)) values were compared with the values based on the Mie theory and showed a reasonable agreement between them. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that parametrizes the size dependency of f(RH) for log normally distributed aerosols.

A global model–measurement evaluation of particle light scattering coefficients at elevated relative humidity

Abstract. The uptake of water by atmospheric aerosols has a pronounced effect on particle light scattering properties, which in turn are strongly dependent on the ambient relative humidity (RH). Earth system models need to account for the aerosol water uptake and its influence on light scattering in order to properly capture the overall radiative effects of aerosols. Here we present a comprehensive model–measurement evaluation of the particle light scattering enhancement factor f(RH), defined as the particle light scattering coefficient at elevated RH (here set to 85 %) divided by its dry value. The comparison uses simulations from 10 Earth system models and a global dataset of surface-based in situ measurements. In general, we find a large diversity in the magnitude of predicted f(RH) amongst the different models, which can not be explained by the site types. Based on our evaluation of sea salt scattering enhancement and simulated organic mass fraction, there is a strong indication that differences in the model parameterizations of hygroscopicity and model chemistry are driving at least some of the observed diversity in simulated f(RH). Additionally, a key point is that defining dry conditions is difficult from an observational point of view and, depending on the aerosol, may influence the measured f(RH). The definition of dry also impacts our model evaluation, because several models exhibit significant water uptake between RH = 0 % and 40 %. The multisite average ratio between model outputs and measurements is 1.64 when RH = 0 % is assumed as the model dry RH and 1.16 when RH = 40 % is the model dry RH value. The overestimation by the models is believed to originate from the hygroscopicity parameterizations at the lower RH range which may not implement all phenomena taking place (i.e., not fully dried particles and hysteresis effects). This will be particularly relevant when a location is dominated by a deliquescent aerosol such as sea salt. Our results emphasize the need to consider the measurement conditions in such comparisons and recognize that measurements referred to as dry may not be dry in model terms. Recommendations for future model–measurement evaluation and model improvements are provided.

Calculating ambient aerosol surface area concentrations using aerosol light scattering enhancement measurements

Aerosol surface area concentration (SA) is crucial for studying atmospheric chemical reactions happened in aerosol water or on aerosol surface. However, there is no commercial instrument that can provide direct measurements of ambient SA. In this paper, we propose a method to calculate ambient SA based only on measurements of a three-wavelength humidified nephelometer system, which measures aerosol optical properties at three wavelengths under dry state and different relative humidity (RH) conditions. Two critical steps are required in this method: (1) Calculating surface area concentration of ambient aerosols in dry state, SA(dry), using a trained random forest machine learning model based only on optical properties measured by the “dry” nephelometer. The proposed machine learning method is evaluated with particle number size distributions (PNSD) datasets from eight field campaigns conducted on the North China Plain during different seasons. The square of correlation coefficients between predicted and calculated SA(dry) for PNSD is about 0.99, the average ratio between predicted and calculated SA(dry) is 1.01 and 70% of data points has a relative difference less than 10%. (2) Calculating the surface area growth factor fS(RH) of ambient aerosol particles due to water uptake using the proposed fS(RH) parameterization scheme fS(RH)=(1+κSRH100−RH)23, and the hygroscopicity parameter κS can be calculated using measured aerosol light scattering enhancement factor and Ångstro¨m exponent. The ambient SA values during two field campaigns which are conducted on the North China Plain (Wangdu campaign and Gucheng campaign, in summer and winter respectively) are calculated using the proposed method. The ambient SA ranges from 42 to 1871 μm2/cm3 with an average of 319 μm2/cm3 during Wangdu campaign, and ranges from 19 to 4156 μm2/cm3 with an average of 788 μm2/cm3 during Gucheng campaign. Drastic daily variations of ambient SA are observed during these two campaigns. The results demonstrate that aerosol hygroscopic growth impacts significantly on variations in ambient SA especially under high RH conditions. The fS(RH) ranges from near 1 to 4 with an average of 1.4 during Wangdu campaign, and ranges from near 1 to 2.7 with an average of 1.3 during Gucheng campaign. The results indicate that the larger RH, the more sensitive fS(RH) becomes to variations in κS which highlights that real-time measurements of aerosol hygroscopicity are required for accurate calculations of ambient SA. The advantage of the proposed method is that the ambient SA can be obtained solely based on measurements of a three-wavelength humidified nephelometer system, facilitating real-time measurements of ambient SA and promoting studies in aerosol heterogeneous reactions.

Recent Progress of Aerosol Light-scattering Enhancement Factor Studies in China

Assessment of the radiative forcing of aerosols in models still lacks sufficient input data for aerosol hygroscopicity. The light scattering enhancement factor [f(RH, λ)] is a crucial parameter for describing aerosol hygroscopic growth properties. In this paper, we provide a survey of f(RH, λ) studies in China for the past seven years, including instrument developments of humidified nephelometers, ambient f(RH, λ) measurements in China, f(RH, λ) parameterization schemes, and f(RH, λ) applications in aerosol measurements. Comparisons of different f(RH, λ) parameterizations are carried out to check their performance in China using field measurement datasets. We also summary the parameterization schemes for predicting f(RH, λ) with aerosol chemical compositions. The recently developed methods to observe other aerosol properties using f(RH, λ) measurements, such as calculating the aerosol hygroscopicity parameter, cloud condensation nuclei number concentration, aerosol liquid water content, and aerosol asymmetry factor, are introduced. Suggestions for further research on f(RH, λ)in China are given.

Case study of the effects of aerosol chemical composition and hygroscopicity on the scattering coefficient in summer, Xianghe, southeast of Beijing, China

The aerosol scattering coefficient is mainly affected by various factors, such as aerosol chemical composition, hygroscopicity and relative humidity. A comprehensive observation of the chemical and physical properties of aerosols was conducted in Xianghe, southeast of Beijing, from June 15 to 26, 2018. Five specific cases were analysed during this observation: (1) rainy (RA); (2) low visibility during the day (LD); (3) high visibility during the day (HD); (4) low visibility at night (LN); and (5) high visibility at night (HN). The mass percentages of a secondary inorganic aerosol (nitrate, sulfate and ammonium) measured with a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) were 64.5% and 68.3% during LD and LN, which were higher than those (63.6% and 46.1%) observed during HD and HN, respectively. The mass percentages of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and primary organic aerosol (POA) to organic aerosol were 76.6% and 23.4%, respectively, during LD. The hygroscopic parameters κ were 0.59 and 0.60 during LD and LN, which were slightly higher than those (0.57 and 0.58) observed during HD and HN, respectively, indicating that the variation of aerosol chemical composition had a limited impact on hygroscopicity. The average proportion, measured with a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS), of biomass burning, dust, heavy metal, soot-like, sea salt, secondary aerosols and other particles were 12.3%, 2.9%, 16.2%, 36.1%, 8.8%, 21.0% and 2.7%. The average proportions of soot-like and secondary aerosols were 42.4% and 19.2% from 0.2 to 1.0 μm. Although the variation and height of the mixing layer were similar between LD and HD, clouds reduced the solar radiation during LD, which caused a higher relative humidity (RH) (67.5%) than that (45.9%) observed during HD. A larger wind speed below 850 hpa during HN caused the mixing layer height (MLH) to reach 1910 m, which resulted in a lower RH (64.8%) than that (68.0%) observed during LN. The light scattering enhancement factors f(RH) during low visibility events were almost greater than those observed during high visibility events, regardless of they were measured during the day (0–9.7%) or night (0–13.1%). The aerosol hygroscopic growth factor (GF) maintained a similar trend with RH, indicating that RH was the main factor affecting the hygroscopic growth of the aerosol, resulting in the decrease in visibility.

Influence of Ambient Relative Humidity on Seasonal Trends of the Scattering Enhancement Factor for Aerosols in Chiba, Japan

In this study, we used ground instruments, namely, a visibility meter, an integrating nephelometer, an aethalometer, a lidar, and a weather monitor, to measure the scattering enhancement factor, f(RH), which quantifies the effect of ambient relative humidity (RH) on aerosol light-scattering, and to generate a model of its annual variation in the city of Chiba, Japan. First, the f(RH) values were calculated with chemical analysis data. Second, visibility-meter and aethalometer data were used to model the monthly trends of f(RH) at 550 nm. The f(RH) values were higher during summer than during the other three seasons, which can be attributed to the general pattern of the regional climatology as well as the loading of different particle types into the lower troposphere. Third, the f(RH) values at 532 nm were obtained from lidar and aethalometer measurements. Low and constant f(RH) values were observed during November, whereas higher and increasing f(RH) values were observed during May. Also, dust events during March 2015 showed decreasing f(RH) with increasing RH .

A needle-like reusable surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate, and its application to the determination of acetamiprid by combining SERS and thin-layer chromatography

A micro surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate has been fabricated by electrochemical deposition of dendrite-like gold on carbon fiber needles (Au-CFNs). Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to confirm the presence of the gold nanostructure on the CFNs. This substrate has a Raman scattering enhancement factor as high as 3.3 × 10^7 when using rhodamine 6G as the reporter molecule. The high SERS sensitivity is attributed to the massive hotspots on gold bulges that enhance the local surface plasmon resonance. The Au-CFN substrate was reproduced 10 times after electrochemically wiping off the analytes from the needle-like electrode. The substrate has attractive features such as convenient sampling, low sample dosage, and minimal invasion. It was applied, in combination with thin-layer chromatography, for the determination of acetamiprid on vegetables. The result was more accurate because the sample information of both the surface and the bulk can be obtained at the same time after inserting the tip of this needle substrate into the TLC plate. The limit of detection for acetamiprid is 0.05μg⋅mL-1 and the linear range is 0.1-10μg⋅mL-1. Graphical abstract A reusable micro needle-like SERS substrate was fabricated and applied for pesticide residue analysis. The SERS signal of acetamiprid can be acquired on the tip of this micro needle-like Au-CFN substrate. This substrate can be reused for 10 times.
