Preparation of RuOx from RuO4, as well as from in situ generated ‘ruthenium hydroxide’ or ruthenate ions, followed by calcinations at 400 °C, reproducibly affords active catalysts generally without noxious oxidation of the CdS support, whereas impregnation of RuCl3·3H2O and subsequent annealing yield poor materials; in the latter procedure the Cds is irretrievably damaged.
