Adjusting Chinese economic indicators for purchasing power parity (PPP) may not actually make a lot of sense. PPP indicators work well for countries with a roughly similar structure of the economy and quality of the goods and services being consumed. Adjusting Chinese output for PPP fails to take into account, for example, that about 50 percent of the Chinese live in rural areas and consume low-quality goods and services, including government-provided services and housing.
