The rapid growth in VLSI design has set forth a number of challenges. With the ever-increasing number of transistors in a chip, reducing power consumption of the chip while retaining or increasing the efficiency at the same time has been a major priority for the designers. Optimizing the Routing phase in the VLSI design cycle is a very viable option to meet the challenge. Reducing wire-lengths as well as the number of vias in turn results in reduction of the capacitance of the chip and hence power consumption. Nature inspired algorithms (Swarm Intelligence) like Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), etc. have proved to be very promising in this field. In this paper, a relatively newer variant of the ACO called River Formation Dynamics (RFD) which removes some of the limitations of the original ACO algorithm has been combined with ACO to form a Hybrid model to deal with the routing problem at hand.
