High-dimensional Encoding in the Round-Robin Differential-Phase-Shift Protocol

In quantum key distribution (QKD), protocols are tailored to adopt desirable experimental attributes, including high key rates, operation in high noise levels, and practical security considerations. The round-robin differential phase shift protocol (RRDPS), falling in the family of differential phase shift protocols, was introduced to remove restrictions on the security analysis, such as the requirement to monitor signal disturbances, improving its practicality in implementations. While the RRDPS protocol requires the encoding of single photons in high-dimensional quantum states, at most, only one bit of secret key is distributed per sifted photon. However, another family of protocols, namely high-dimensional (HD) QKD, enlarges the encoding alphabet, allowing single photons to carry more than one bit of secret key each. The high-dimensional BB84 protocol exemplifies the potential benefits of such an encoding scheme, such as larger key rates and higher noise tolerance. Here, we devise an approach to extend the RRDPS QKD to an arbitrarily large encoding alphabet and explore the security consequences. We demonstrate our new framework with a proof-of-concept experiment and show that it can adapt to various experimental conditions by optimizing the protocol parameters. Our approach offers insight into bridging the gap between seemingly incompatible quantum communication schemes by leveraging the unique approaches to information encoding of both HD and DPS QKD.

Security of round-robin differential-phase-shift quantum-key-distribution protocol with correlated light sources

Among various quantum-key-distribution (QKD) protocols, the round-robin differential-phase- shift (RRDPS) protocol has a unique feature where its security is guaranteed without monitoring the signal disturbance. Moreover, this protocol has the remarkable property of being robust against source imperfections, assuming that the emitted pulses are independent. Unfortunately, some experiments with high-speed QKD systems confirmed the violation of the independence due to pulse correlations, and therefore the lack of a security proof, without taking into account this effect is an obstacle for guaranteeing the implementation security. In this paper, we show that the RRDPS protocol is secure against any source imperfections by establishing a security proof with the pulse correlations. The proof is simple in the sense that we make only three experimentally simple assumptions on the source. Our numerical simulation based on the proof shows that the long-range pulse correlation does not cause a significant impact on the key rate, which reveals another striking feature of the RRDPS protocol. Our security proof is thus effective and applicable to a wide range of practical sources and paves the way to realizing truly secure QKD in high-speed systems.

Adjustable round-pulse time delayer for round-robin differential phase-shift quantum key distribution

Round-robin differential phase-shift (RRDPS) is one of the most promising quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol. Because cutting off the link between phase error and bit error and needing not of monitor the signal disturbance, the RRDPS protocol is in principle highly robust against channel disturbance for a large pulse packet size L and provides a new route towards QKD over long distances. However, once the experimental system is set up, the value of L is fixed. It cannot choose an optimal L to maximize the final key rate. In this paper, we propose a round-pulse time delayer, which can effectively realize the adjustable and a wide range of delay selection. This round-pulse time delayer has the advantages of simple structure and stable performance, which ensures the wide application for RRDPS-QKD protocol.

Refined security proof of the round-robin differential-phase-shift quantum key distribution and its improved performance in the finite-sized case

Among many quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, the round-robin differential phase shift (RRDPS) protocol is unique in that it can upper-bound the amount of the information leakage without monitoring the signal disturbance. To expedite implementation of the protocol, however, the number of pulses forming a single block should be kept small, which significantly decreases the key rates in the original security proof. In the present paper, we refine the security proof of the RRDPS protocol in the finite-sized regime and achieve a tighter estimation for the information leakage without changing the original experimental setups. As a consequence, we obtain better key rates in both asymptotic and finite-sized cases while keeping the preferable features of the protocol, such as omission of phase randomization.

Round-robin differential-phase-shift quantum key distribution with twisted photons

Quantum key distribution (QKD) offers the possibility for two individuals to communicate a securely encrypted message. From the time of its inception in 1984 by Bennett and Brassard, QKD has been the result of intense research. One technical challenge is the monitoring of signal disturbance in a QKD system to bound the information leakage towards an unwanted eavesdropper. Recently, the round-robin differential phase-shift (RRDPS) protocol, which encodes bits of information in a high-dimensional state space, was proposed to solve this exact problem. Since its introduction, many realizations of the RRDPS protocol were demonstrated using trains of coherent pulses. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an implementation of the RRDPS protocol using the photonic orbital angular momentum degree of freedom. In particular, we show that Alice's generation stage and Bob's detection stage can each be reduced to a single phase element, greatly simplifying its implementation. Our scheme offers a practical demonstration of the RRDPS protocol which will suppress the need for monitoring signal disturbance in free-space channels.

Recently, a novel kind of quantum key distribution called the round-robin differential phase-shift (RRDPS) protocol was proposed, which bounds the amount of leakage without monitoring signal disturbance. The protocol can be implemented by a weak coherent source. The security of this protocol with a simply characterized source has been proved. The application of a common phase shift can improve the secret key rate of the protocol. In practice, the randomized phase is discrete and the secret key rate is deviated from the continuous case. In this study, we analyze security of the RRDPS protocol with discrete-phase-randomized coherent state source and bound the secret key rate. We fix the length of each packet at 32 and 64, then simulate the secret key rates of the RRDPS protocol with discrete-phase randomization and continuous-phase randomization. Our simulation results show that the performance of the discrete-phase randomization case is close to the continuous counterpart with only a small number of discrete phases. The research is practically valuable for experimental implementation.

A security proof of the round-robin differential phase shift quantum key distribution protocol based on the signal disturbance

The round-robin differential phase shift (RRDPS) quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol is a unique QKD protocol whose security has not been understood through an information-disturbance trade-off relation, and a sufficient amount of privacy amplification was given independently of signal disturbance. Here, we discuss the security of the RRDPS protocol in the asymptotic regime when a good estimate of the bit error rate is available as a measure of signal disturbance. The uniqueness of the RRDPS protocol shows up as a peculiar form of information-disturbance trade-off curve. When the length of a block of pulses used for encoding and the signal disturbance are both small, it provides a significantly better key rate than that from the original security proof. On the other hand, when the block length is large, the use of the signal disturbance makes little improvement in the key rate. Our analysis will bridge a gap between the RRDPS protocol and the conventional QKD protocols.

Differential-phase-shift quantum-key-distribution protocol with a small number of random delays

The differential-phase-shift (DPS) quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol was proposed aiming at simple implementation, but it can tolerate only a small disturbance in a quantum channel. The round-robin DPS (RRDPS) protocol could be a good solution for this problem, which in fact can tolerate even up to $50\%$ of a bit error rate. Unfortunately, however, such a high tolerance can be achieved only when we compromise the simplicity, i.e., Bob's measurement must involve a large number of random delays ($|\mathcal{R}|$ denotes its number), and in a practical regime of $|\mathcal{R}|$ being small, the tolerance is low. In this paper, we propose a new DPS protocol to achieve a higher tolerance than the one in the original DPS protocol, in which the measurement setup is less demanding than the one of the RRDPS protocol for the high tolerance regime. We call the new protocol the small-number-random DPS (SNRDPS) protocol, and in this protocol, we add only a small amount of randomness to the original DPS protocol, i.e., $2\leq|\mathcal{R}|\leq10$. In fact, we found that the performance of the SNRDPS protocol is significantly enhanced over the original DPS protocol only by employing a few additional delays such as $|\mathcal{R}|=2$. Also, we found that the key generation rate of the SNRDPS protocol outperforms the RRDPS protocol without monitoring the bit error rate when it is less than $5\%$ and $|\mathcal{R}|\leq10$. Our protocol is an intermediate protocol between the original DPS protocol and the RRDPS protocol, and it increases the variety of the DPS-type protocols with quantified security.

Round-robin differential phase shift (RRDPS) is a novel quantum key distribution protocol which can bound information leakage without monitoring signal disturbance. In this work, to decrease the effect of the vacuum component in a weak coherent pulses source, we employ a practical decoy-state scheme with heralded single-photon source for the RRDPS protocol and analyze the performance of this method. In this scheme, only two decoy states are needed and the yields of single-photon state and multi-photon states, as well as the bit error rates of each photon states, can be estimated. The final key rate of this scheme is bounded and simulated over transmission distance. The results show that the two-decoy-state method with heralded single-photon source performs better than the two-decoy-state method with weak coherent pulses.

Recently, a round-robin differential phase-shift (RRDPS) protocol was proposed [Nature 509, 475 (2014)], in which the amount of leakage is bounded without monitoring the signal disturbance. Introducing states of the phase-encoded Bennett–Brassard 1984 protocol (PE-BB84) to the RRDPS, this paper presents another quantum key distribution protocol called round-robin differential quadrature phase-shift (RRDQPS) quantum key distribution. Regarding a train of many pulses as a single packet, the sender modulates the phase of each pulse by one of {0, π/2, π, 3π/2}, then the receiver measures each packet with a Mach–Zehnder interferometer having a phase basis of 0 or π/2. The RRDQPS protocol can be implemented with essential similar hardware to the PE-BB84, so it has great compatibility with the current quantum system. Here we analyze the security of the RRDQPS protocol against the intercept-resend attack and the beam-splitting attack. Results show that the proposed protocol inherits the advantages arising from the simplicity of the RRDPS protocol and is more robust against these attacks than the original protocol.

Robustness of the round-robin differential-phase-shift quantum-key-distribution protocol against source flaws

Recently, a new type of quantum key distribution, called the round-robin differential phase-shift (RRDPS) protocol [Nature 509, 475 (2014)], was proposed, where the security can be guaranteed without monitoring any statistics. In this Letter, we investigate source imperfections and side-channel attacks on the source of this protocol. We show that only three assumptions are needed for the security, and no detailed characterizations of the source or the side-channel attacks are needed. This high robustness is another striking advantage of the RRDPS protocol over other protocols.

Experimental demonstration of a quantum key distribution without signal disturbance monitoring

Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables two distant users, Alice and Bob, to share secret keys. In existing QKD protocols, an eavesdropper's intervention will inevitably disturb the quantum signals; thus, Alice and Bob must monitor the signal disturbance to place a bound on the potential information leakage. However, T. Sasaki et al. proposed a quite different protocol, named round-robin differential phase shift (RRDPS), in which the amount of eavesdropped information is bounded without monitoring the signal disturbance. Here, we present the first active implementation of the RRDPS protocol. In our experiment, Alice prepares packets of pulses, with each packet being a train with 65 pulses, and the global phase of each packet is randomized. Bob uses a 1-GHz, 1-64-bit actively controlled variable-delay interferometer to realize random switching of the different delays. Benefiting from the large pulse number of each packet, the high stability and low insertion loss of the interferometer, the system can distribute secret key over a distance of 90 km. Our results confirm the feasibility of performing practical QKD with this novel protocol.

Experimental quantum key distribution without monitoring signal disturbance

Since the invention of Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) protocol, many quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols have been proposed and some protocols are operated even in field environments. One of the striking features of QKD is that QKD protocols are provably secure unlike cryptography based on computational complexity assumptions. It has been believed that, to guarantee the security of QKD, Alice and Bob have to monitor the statistics of the measurement outcomes which are used to determine the amount of the privacy amplification to generate a key. Recently a new type of QKD protocol, called round robin differential phase shift (RRDPS) protocol, was proposed, and remarkably this protocol can generate a key without monitoring any statistics of the measurement outcomes. Here we report an experimental realization of the RRDPS protocol. We used a setup in which Bob randomly chooses one from four interferometers with different pulse delays so that he could implement phase difference measurements for all possible combinations with five-pulse time-bin states. Using the setup, we successfully distributed keys over 30 km of fiber, making this the first QKD experiment that does not rely on signal disturbance monitoring.
