Osmotic and ionic regulation in the giant Malaysian fresh water prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man), with special reference to strontium and bromine

Abstract Macrobrachium rosenbergii is able to exert a high degree of control over the osmotic pressure and the ionic concentration of its haemolymph when exposed to a wide range of salinity between fresh water and its isosmotic point. Sodium and chloride ions were regulated at almost identical concentrations over most of the salinity range tested. Calcium and potassium ions were hyperregulated at all salinities, whereas magnesium ions were always maintained at much lower concentrations than in the medium. The regulation of strontium ions has been demonstrated and appears to be linked to magnesium regulation. Haemolymph bromide concentration is also regulated, but not as strongly as haemolymph chloride, and the two regulatory mechanisms appear to be discriminatory. The regulation of both strontium and bromide ions suggests that both may be important in the physiology of this species.

Chromosome behaviour upon fertilization in eggs of the giant freshwater prawn,Macrobrachium rosenbergii(de Man)

Summary Chronological changes of the chromosomes upon feritilization of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man), were followed. Egg chromosomes, within 2 min after spawning, were at the second meiotic metaphase whereas sperm nucleus retained a cupped shape of the base region. The egg chromosomes progressed to the second meiotic anaphase by 10–15 min and completed maturation by 20 min after spawning. Both female and male pronuclei were clearly differentiable at 1 hr after spawning. Female pronucleus was larger than the male pronucleus. But both pronuclei enlarged to an equal size when they were in proximity by 3 hr after spawning. Pronuclear fusion took place by 4 hr after spawning. The fused nucleus advanced into the first mitotic division rapidly so that the first mitotic metaphase or anaphase was observed by 5 hr after spawning. Toxicity of the organophosphorous insecticide metamidophos (O,S-dimethyl phosphoramidothioate) to larvae of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man) and the blue shrimp Penaeus stylirostris Stimpson.

The organophosphorous insecticide O,S-dimethyl phosphoramidothioate (Metamidophos, Tamaron, Monitor, Hamidop) is widely used for pest control in tropical crops. If washed down to streams and estuaries its residues could adversely affect populations of commercially important crustaceans, like those of the palaemonid prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii and the penaeid shrimp Penaeus stylirostris. This paper presents information on the toxicity of O,S-dimethyl phosphoramidothioate to larvae of M. rosenbergii and P. stylirostris.

Induction of Female Breeding Characteristics by Ovarian Tissue Implants in Androgenic Gland Ablated Male Freshwater PrawnsMacrobrachium rosenbergii(de Man) (Decapoda, Palaemonidae)

Summary Implantation of ovarian tissue into androgenic gland ablated male prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) induced the development of ovigerous and ovipositing setae and brood chambers, suggesting that in females, these secondary sexual characteristics are induced by the ovary. This model system has potential for the study of morphological changes associated with breeding in the Decapoda.

REDESCRIPTION AND SYSTEMATIC REMARKS ON PROBOPYRUS BUITENDIJKI (HORST, 1910) (ISOPODA, BOPYRIDAE), PARASITIC ON MACROBRACHIUM ROSENBERGII (DE MAN) IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

ABSTRACT The bopyrid isopod Probopyrus buitendijki (Horst, 1910), the only known bopyrid parasite of the commercially important palaemonid shrimp Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man), is redescribed and fully illustrated on the basis of collections from Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, including type-material. Probopyrus latilamellaris Nierstrasz and Brender a Brandis, 1923, is considered a junior synonym of P. buitendijki. Though similar to P. borrei (Giard and Bonnier) it is readily distinguishable by means of characters presented.
