Ultra-long room temperature phosphorescent materials based on tetraphenylethylene derivatives for anti-counterfeiting and encryption applications

Stimuli-responsive room temperature phosphorescent materials have been the subject of considerable research activity in recent years. In this study, the tetraphenylethylene group was selected in combination with arylboronic acid (TIPE-BOH) and used to dope a rigid polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to generate a film material (TIPE-BOH-PVA) that exhibited an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. The prepared film exhibits excellent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) performance, with an enhanced emission wavelength and an afterglow time of up to 12 s. The triplet-to-singlet Förster resonance energy transfer (TS-FRET) has been utilized to modify the afterglow color by adding butyl rhodamine B (BRhB) and rhodamine 6G (R6G), employing a water phase without the use of organic solvents. The resultant material exhibits stimulus responsiveness; the RTP properties disappear when the material is exposed to water vapor, but are restored following thermal treatment. The material has potential applications in information encryption and erasure, double anti-counterfeiting ink, and fingerprint acquisition systems. This work offers a new strategy for the design of stimuli-responsive ultra-long RTP materials with far-ranging end applications.

Heavy-Atom Effect Regulating Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Organic-Inorganic Zn-Based Halides for White-Light Emission.

Organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) properties have aroused great research enthusiasm as outstanding broadband white-light emitters. Current studies on OIMHs with white-light emission were achieved via self-trapped excitons (STEs), but the unclear mechanism of STE formation is not favorable for the design of materials. In this work, zero-dimensional OIMHs composed of organic 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzylamine (TBA) and zine halide were synthesized, which enhanced the ratio of the RTP emission to the fluorescence emission from the TBA ligand. The experimental and mechanistic analyses demonstrate that the manageable RTP is mainly caused by the heavy-atom effect. In particular, by adjusting the incorporation ratio of halogen, an obvious white-light emission with a chromaticity coordinate value of (0.31, 0.33) can be achieved. This work developed a method for regulating the RTP of OIMHs with the heavy-atom effect to realize white-light emission, providing a new idea for the design of white-light emission materials.

Multifunctional applications of organic light-emitting diodes and room temperature phosphorescence based on benzoyl-fluorene hybrid molecules

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted great interests for their wide application in lighting and other fields. How to efficiently utilize triplet excitons to achieve the multifunctionality of OLED and RTP simultaneously is a major challenge. Herein, two blue molecules, 3PCZFB and 3PCZBF were reported. Theoretical calculations indicate that both molecules possess hybrid localized charge transfer (HLCT) characteristic. More importantly, both can simultaneously obtain electro-fluorescence and RTP properties by multiple harvesting of triplet excitons with high spin-orbit coupling matrix element (SOCME). The introduction of benzoyl fluorene increased the contribution of the n-orbital, resulting in a high SOCME, which is beneficial to both high exciton utilization efficiency (EUE) and RTP. The non-doped OLED of 3PCZFB achieved maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 4.9 % and EUE of 58.6 % at 459 nm. Besides, 0.1 % 3PCZFB and 3PCZBF doped in PMMA sheets achieve RTP efficiencies of 6.6 % at 524 nm and 25.9 % at 506 nm, as well as lifetimes of 379.8 ms and 204.8 ms. This is the first time Benzoyl fluorene-based molecules achieved dual-function applications in OLED and RTP by utilizing and recycling triplet excitons of T1.

Cationic Engineering Strategy to Achieve Controllable Room‐Temperature‐Phosphorescence in Hybrid Zinc Halides

AbstractDespite rapid progress and wide applications of room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials, it is still a great challenge to optimize the RTP activity through rational structural design at a molecular level. Herein, a successful cationic engineering strategy is demonstrated to modulate the crystal flexibility achieving controllable RTP in a new pair of metal halides [APML]ZnCl4 ([APML] = N‐(3‐Aminopropyl)morpholine) and [AEML]ZnCl4 ([AEML] = N‐(2‐Aminoethyl)morpholine). Both halides display blue fluorescence under 365 nm UV. Comparing with longer [APML]+, shorter [AEML]+ significantly enhances crystal rigidity and restrains non‐radiative scattering, boosting photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) from 18.89% to 22.41%. Synchronously, enhanced crystal rigidity significantly promotes the inter‐system crossing from singlet to triplet excited states. As a consequence, [AEML]ZnCl4 displays long‐lived green RTP property with millisecond scale lifetime in contrast to the blank RTP activity of [APML]ZnCl4. Comprehensive investigations demonstrate that the energy transfer between inorganic and organic components greatly changes the redistribution of singlet and triplet excited states, resulting in distinct phosphorescence activity. The different short‐lived blue fluorescence and long‐lived green phosphorescence provide a color‐time‐dual‐resolved luminescent tag with advanced applications in anti‐counterfeiting, etc. This work highlights a new structural engineering strategy to achieve controllable RTP affording a guide to rationally design RTP materials.

Dynamic photo-enhanced polyacrylic acid-based room temperature phosphorescence materials with persistent long-wavelength and even near-infrared luminescence via Förster resonance energy transfer

Stimulus-responsive organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted widespread attention in chemical sensors, bioimaging and information security. In this work, a dynamic photo-enhanced RTP material is prepared by doping 1,8-naphthalic anhydride (NA) into the polyacrylic acid (PAA) matrix. After 10 min irradiation of 302 nm UV light, the RTP properties of the doping systems PAA-NA are significantly enhanced and the photo-enhanced performances show excellent reversibility. More interestingly, PAA-NA as energy donor and the commercial dye rhodamine B (RhB) as energy acceptor are used to construct the ternary doping systems PAA-NA-RhB, which exhibit color-tunable long afterglow from orange to red through the triplet-to-singlet Förster resonance energy transfer (TS-FRET) process. Significantly, RhB as the intermediate and near infrared (NIR) dye Nile blue (NiB) as energy acceptor are codoped into energy donor PAA-NA matrices to facilely prepare the quaternary doping systems PAA-NA-RhB-NiB, and persistent NIR luminescence is realized successfully via the stepwise FRET process after 10 min irradiation of 302 nm UV light. The great application potential of the prepared photo-enhanced PAA-based RTP materials in high-level information encryption has been confirmed due to their excellent RTP performance. This study broadens the range of photo-enhanced polymer-based RTP materials and extends the persistent luminescence of PAA-based RTP materials to the long-wavelength and NIR regions.

Förster Resonance Energy Transfer: Stimulus-Responsive Purely Organic Room Temperature Phosphorescence through Dynamic B-N bond.

Recently, stimulus-responsive organic materials with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) properties have attracted significant attention owing to their potential applications in chemical sensing, anticounterfeiting, and displays. However, molecular design currently lacks systematicity and effectiveness. Herein, we report a capture-release strategy for the construction of reversible RTP via B/N Lewis pairs. Specifically, the RTP of the Lewis acid of 7-bromo-5,9-dioxa-13b-boranaphtho[3,2,1-de]anthracene (BrBA) can be deactivated through capturing by the Lewis base, N,N-diphenyl-4-(pyridin-4-yl)aniline (TPAPy), and reactivated by dissociation of B-N bonds to release BrBA. Reversible RTP is attributed to the exceptional self-assembly capability of BrBA, whereas the tunable RTP colors are derived from distinct Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) processes. The potential applications of RTP materials in information storage and anti-counterfeiting were also experimentally validated. The capture-release approach proposed in this study offers an effective strategy for designing stimulus-responsive materials.

Achieving Bright and Long-Lived Aqueous Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Carbon Nitrogen Dots Through In Situ Host-Guest Binding.

The development of bright and long-lived aqueous room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials holds paramount importance in broadening the application scope of RTP material system. However, the conventional RTP materials usually exhibit low efficiency and short lifetime in aqueous solution. Herein, an in situ host-guest strategy is proposed to achieve cyanuric acid (CA)-derived phosphorescent carbon nitrogen dots (CNDs) composite (CNDs@CA) that demonstrates a significant enhancement of both quantum yield (QY) and lifetime mediated by water. Detailed investigations reveal that the robust hydrogen bonding networks between CNDs@CA and water effectively stabilize triplet excitons and suppress nonradiative decays, as well as facilitate efficient energy transfer from CA to CNDs, thereby prolonging the lifetime and enhancing the efficiency of RTP. The phosphorescent QY and lifetime of CNDs@CA can be increased to 26.89% (3.9-fold increase) and 951.25ms (5.5-fold increase), respectively, with the incorporation of 50 wt% water under ambient conditions. Even in fully aqueous environments (with up to 400 wt% water added), CNDs@CA exhibits persistent water-boosted RTP properties, demonstrating exceptional stability. The robust water-boosted RTP property of CNDs@CA in aqueous solutions presents significant potential for high signal-to-noise ratio afterglow bioimaging as well as advanced information encryption.

The Impact of Molecular Packing on Organic Room Temperature Phosphorescence and Corresponding Stimulus Response Effect

AbstractOrganic luminescent materials exhibiting persistent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have garnered considerable interest due to their versatile applications. However, the mechanism is still unclear, especially for the molecular structure‐molecular arrangement‐property relationship. Herein, six derivatives of phenothiazine 5,5‐dioxide are synthesized, revealing their distinct RTP properties and the associated underlying mechanisms. Careful analyses of their single crystal structures, combined with initial theoretical calculations, indicate that the persistent RTP effect is facilitated by effective intermolecular π–π interactions in the solid state led by folded conformation. Specifically, PTZO‐CF3‐3F exhibits distinctive photo‐activated phosphorescence both in crystal and grinding state in response to the changes of molecular arrangement. Besides, a porous structure is found to be present in PTZO‐CF3‐2F crystal, offering it great sensitivity to oxygen for both RTP intensity and lifetime. Accordingly, the visual oxygen warning device is fabricated successfully. Furthermore, PTZO‐CF3‐3F with photo‐activated RTP effect in a grinding state is successfully utilized in the applications of anti‐counterfeiting and optical logic gates, expanding the scope of stimulus‐responsive phosphorescence materials for broader applications.

Tailoring raloxifene into single-component molecular crystals possessing multilevel stimuli-responsive room-temperature phosphorescence

Simultaneously achieving room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and multiple-stimuli responsiveness in a single-component system is of significance but remains challenging. Crystallization has been recognized to be a workable strategy to fulfill the above task. However, how the molecular packing mode affects the intersystem crossing and RTP lifetime concurrently remains unclear so far. Herein, four economic small-molecular compounds, analogues of the famous drug raloxifene (RALO), are facilely synthesized and further explored as neat single-component and stimuli-responsive RTP emitters via crystallization engineering. Thanks to their simple structures and high ease to crystallize, these raloxifene analogues function as models to clarify the important role of molecular packing in the RTP and stimuli-responsiveness properties. Thorough combination of the single-crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations clearly manifests that the tight antiparallel molecular packing mode is the key point to their RTP behaviors. Interestingly, harnessing the controllable and reversible phase transitions of the two polymorphs of RALO-OAc driven by mechanical force, solvent vapor, and heat, a single-component multilevel stimuli-responsive platform with tunable emission color is established and further exploited for optical information encryption. This work would shed light on the rational design of multi-stimuli responsive RTP systems based on single-component organics.

Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Photosynthesis of Supramolecular Organoboron Polymers with Dynamic Effects.

The solid-state synthesis of single-crystalline organic polymers, having functional properties, remains an attractive and developing research area in polymer chemistry and materials science. However, light-triggered topochemical synthesis of crystalline polymers comprising an organoboron backbone has not yet been reported. Here, we describe an intriguing example of single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) rapid photosynthesis (occurs on a seconds-scale) of two structurally different linear organoboron polymers, driven by environmentally sustainable visible/sun light, obtained from the same monomer molecule. A newly designed Lewis acid-base type molecular B ← N organoboron adduct (consisting of an organoboron core and naphthylvinylpyridine ligands) crystallizes in two solid-state forms featuring the same chemical structure but different 3D structural topologies, namely, monomers 1 and 2. The solvate molecule-free crystals of 1 undergo topochemical photopolymerization via an unusual olefin-naphthyl ring [2 + 2] cyclization to yield the single crystalline [3]-ladderane polymer 1P growing along the B ← N linkages, accompanied by instantaneous and violent macroscopic mechanical motions or photosalient effects (such as bending-reshaping and jumping motions). In contrast, visible light-harvesting single crystals of 2 quantitatively polymerize to a B ← N bond-stabilized polymer 2P in a SCSC fashion owing to the rapid [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction among olefin double bonds. Such olefin bonds in the crystals of 2 are suitably preorganized for photoreaction due to the presence of solvate molecules in the crystal packing. Single crystals of 2 also show photodynamic jumping motions - in response to visible light but in a relatively slower fashion than the crystals of 1. In addition to SCSC topochemical polymerization and dynamic motions, both monomer crystals and their single-crystalline polymers feature green emissive and short-lived room-temperature phosphorescence properties upon excitation with visible-light wavelength.

Role of Halobenzene Guest Molecules in Modulating Room Temperature Phosphorescence of Benzophenone-Naphthalene Diimide Inclusion Crystals.

Materials exhibiting room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have recently emerged as a subject of significant interest. In this study, we successfully created inclusion crystals by introducing halobenzenes as guests into a host molecule combining benzophenone with naphthalene diimide. This approach led to the creation of fascinating fluorescence and RTP properties dependent on the guest molecules. Notably, crystals containing chlorobenzene showed cyan fluorescence, while those with iodobenzene displayed red RTP. This difference highlights the impact of the guest molecule on the luminescent properties, with the significant external heavy-atom effect of iodobenzene playing a key role in promoting efficient intersystem crossing between the excited singlet and triplet states. Crystals with bromobenzene exhibited a unique blend of fluorescence and RTP, both from benzophenone and naphthalene diimide, highlighting the moderate heavy-atom effect. These findings reveal composite materials with remarkably diverse and interesting optical characteristics.

Incorporation of deuterated coronene into cage-like sodalite-type porous organic salts and improvement of room-temperature phosphorescence properties

Abstract Host materials with external heavy atom effects do not change the chemical structures of incorporated luminescent molecules but promote intersystem crossing from the excited singlet state to the excited triplet state, which induces room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). The deuteration of luminescent molecules suppresses non-radiative deactivation via C–H stretching vibration; therefore, the improvement of both phosphorescence lifetime and quantum efficiency (i.e. isotope effect) is expected. Although a combination of the external heavy atom effect and isotope effect could be expected to improve phosphorescent performances dramatically, an environment with a strong external heavy atom effect (density of iodine atoms ≥0.65 gcm−3) increases non-radiative deactivation via spin-orbit coupling; therefore, the isotope effect is hindered, and the phosphorescent lifetime and quantum efficiency are not usually improved. In the current work, we constructed cage-like sodalite-type porous organic salts (s-POSs) where the density of iodine atoms (0.55 gcm−3) was moderate (0.13 ̶ 0.65 gcm−3). Incorporation of a deuterated representative luminescent molecule such as coronene (coronene-d12) into s-POSs enabled the exerting of both the external heavy atom effect and isotope effect, which successfully improved both RTP lifetime (1.1 times) and quantum efficiency (1.6 times) over those of an incorporated ordinary coronene (coronene-h12).

Circularly Polarized Room Temperature Phosphorescence of Chiral Bromoxanthone Using a Chiral Self‐Assembled Liquid Crystal Polymer Frameworks

AbstractChiral self‐assembly has often been found to be an efficient strategy for the development of high‐performance circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials, through the regulation of the ordered helical superstructure blocks in liquid crystal media. Here, the design and synthesis of two pairs of axially chiral emitters (BBXT‐3‐Br and BOHXT‐3‐Br) are reported based on bromoxanthone. And the chiral self‐assembled liquid crystal polymer (LCP) framework (PRM257) is demonstrated by mixing of the emitters with liquid crystal monomer (RM257) through thermal annealing and photoinitiated polymerization. Both BBXT‐3‐Br@PRM257 and BOHXT‐3‐Br@PRM257 exhibited excellent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) properties. In addition, BBXT‐3‐Br@PRM257 enantiomers showed afterglow with an average lifetime (τ) of 162.41 ms and emitted blue CPL (λem = 450 nm, ΦFL = 1.3%, |gFL| = 0.071), although weak circularly polarized RTP (CP‐RTP) is observed. Interestingly, BOHXT‐3‐Br@PRM257 with a less conjugated system emits red RTP (τ = 98.83 ms) and also intense CP‐RTP (λem = 612 nm, ΦPhos = 0.45%, |gRTP| = 0.057).

Significant room-temperature phosphorescence enhancement induced by matrix complexes

Incorporating phosphors into polymer matrix is a relatively mature method to develop organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials but still needs to be further explored because of limited investigations about the effect of different matrix on the RTP properties of the same guest molecule. Colorful RTP (from blue to red, with τafterglow up to 1736 ms) in carboxymethyl chitosan (CC) systems was achieved in this work. To improve the RTP performance, quaternary chitosan (QC) was introduced to build a binary matrix system, which extended the lifetime by 200 ms and increased the phosphorescence quantum yield to 3.51 times. Systematic characterizations and theoretical calculations indicated that the RTP materials obtained from binary matrix had higher ion group density and stronger dipole–dipole interactions, which could narrow the singlet–triplet energy gap and promote the triplet excitons generation. Compared to single matrix, binary matrix could also provide more crosslinked networks to better stabilize triplet excitons, thus synergistically enhancing the RTP. Finally, based on the good biocompatibility and antibacterial properties of chitosan and phosphorescent emission, the films were expected to be used for monitoring the integrity of the package and multiple antibacterial coating films.

Recent Advances in Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Metal-Organic Hybrids: Structures, Properties, and Applications.

Metal-organic hybrid (MOH) materials with room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have drawn attention in recent years due to their superior RTP properties of high phosphorescence efficiency and ultralong emission lifetime. Great achievement has been realized in developing MOH materials with high-performance RTP, but a systematic study on MOH materials with RTP feature is lacking. This review highlights recent advances in metal-organic hybrid RTP materials. The molecular packing, the photophysical properties, and their applications of metal-organic hybrid RTP materials are discussed in detail. Metal-organic hybrid RTP materials can be divided into six parts: coordination polymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), metal-halide hybrids, organic ionic crystals, organic ionic polymers, and organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites. These RTP materials have been successfully applied in time-resolved data encryption, fingerprint recognition, information logic gates, X-ray imaging, and photomemory. This review not only provides the basic principles of designing RTP metal-organic hybrids, but also propounds the future research prospects of RTP metal-organic hybrids. This review offers many effective strategies for developing metal-organic hybrids with excellent RTP properties, thus satisfying practical applications.

Molecular Engineering Enables Multi‐Color Room Temperature Phosphorescence of Carbon Dots Composites Derived In Situ, Facilitating their Utilization for Advanced Information Encryption

AbstractLong‐life room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials hold significant potential in the fields of optoelectronic devices, information encryption, and bio‐imaging due to their excellent optical properties. However, achieving multi‐color tunable RTP materials has proven challenging. In this study, molecular engineering strategies are employed to select precursor molecules with varying degrees of conjugation such as phthalic anhydride (PA), naphtho[2,3‐c] furan‐1,3‐dione (23NA), and naphthalic anhydride (NA). By combining these guest molecules with a host boric acid matrix through a one‐step microwave method, carbon dots (CDs)composites (PA@BA, 23NA@BA and NA@BA) exhibiting excellent RTP properties are successfully prepared. As the degree of precursor conjugation increased gradually, the phosphorescence color modulation of the composites demonstrates satisfactory transitions from blue to yellow. Notably, CDs are derived in situ within the boric acid matrix while covalent and hydrogen bonds formed between CDs and borate matrix effectively suppress nonradiative leaps and facilitate composite RTP activation. Furthermore, the boric acid matrix acts as insulation against oxygen diffusion and prevents quenching of triplet excitons by external factors. The rationality behind phosphorescence emission mechanism and wavelength modulation is further conformed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Finally, CDs composites are successfully applied for advanced message encryption of text and images.

Photo-Controllable Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence: State of the Art.

In this concept, we showcase the upsurge in the studies of dynamic ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials containing inorganic and/or organic components as versatile photo-responsive platforms. The goal is to provide a comprehensive analysis of photo-controllable RTP, and meanwhile delve into the underlying RTP properties of various classes of photochromic materials including metal-organic complexes, organic-inorganic co-crystals, purely organic small molecules and organic polymers. In particular, the design principles governing the integration of the photochromic and RTP moieties within a single material system, and the tuning of dynamic RTP in response to light are emphasized. As such, this concept sheds light on the challenges and opportunities of using these tunable RTP materials for potential applications in optoelectronics, particularly highlighting their use of reversible information encryption, erasable light printing and rewritable smart paper.

Coordination-induced and tunable layered rare-earth hydroxide-complex intercalated nanohybrid phosphorescent photosensitizer and therapy.

Hydrotalcite intercalated nanohybrid has served as a vital phosphorescent photosensitizer owing to remarkable 1O2 quantum yield and high cell mortality performance. However, it is rather difficult for potential large or complex guest phosphors to directly intercalate into the hydrotalcite gallery. Hence, it is necessary to regulate the interlayer microenvironment of hydrotalcites firstly for outstanding photosensitive properties. Herein, two isomers, 5,5'BDA and 4,4'BDA, with distinctive dual coordinative features were selected to modify the layer microenvironment of the LGdH gallery and induce the introduction of prospective Gd(HPhN)3 phosphorescent complexes into hydrotalcite through two different coordination effects successively. A LGdH-BDA-Gd(HPhN)3 intercalated nanohybrid phosphorescent photosensitizer was successfully obtained. The results indicated that the more efficient improvement was observed from 5,5'BDA due to offering a more spacious and stable space. Specifically, LGdH-5,5'BDA-Gd(HPhN)3 showed significantly better room temperature phosphorescence properties than LGdH-4,4'BDA-Gd(HPhN)3, whose lifetime was nearly 15 times longer than the latter. Additionally, the LGdH-5,5'BDA-Gd(HPhN)3 system displayed superior singlet oxygen generation in vitro under 460 nm irradiation (the quantum yield Φ = 0.48) and outstanding photodynamic therapy performance in tumor cells. LGdH presented more remarkable enhancement performance on the RTP properties of the luminescent molecules. This work provides a novel platform for designing a high-performance hydrotalcite intercalated nanohybrid phosphorescent photosensitizer through coordination induction to regulate the layer microenvironment.

A flexible ligand and halogen engineering enable one phosphor-based full-color persistent luminescence in hybrid perovskitoids.

Color-tunable room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials have raised wide interest due to their potential application in the fields of encryption and anti-counterfeiting. Herein, a series of CdX2-organic hybrid perovskitoids, (H-apim)CdX3 and (apim)CdX2 (denoted as CdX-apim1 and CdX-apim2, apim = 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole, X = Cl, Br), were synthesized using apim with both rigid and flexible groups as ligands, which exhibit naked-eye detectable RTP with different durations and colors (from cyan to red) by virtue of different halogen atoms, coordination modes and the coplanar configuration of flexible groups. Interestingly, CdCl-apim1 and CdX-apim2 both exhibit excitation wavelength-dependent RTP properties, which can be attributed to the multiple excitation of imidazole/apim, the diverse interactions with halogen atoms, and aggregated state of imidazoles. Structural analysis and theoretical calculations confirm that the aminopropyl groups in CdCl-apim1 do not participate in luminescence, while those in CdCl-apim2 are involved in luminescence including both metal/halogen to ligand charge transfer and twisted intramolecular charge transfer. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these perovskitoids can be applied in multi-step anti-counterfeiting, information encryption and smart ink fields. This work not only develops a new type of perovskitoid with full-color persistent luminescence, but also provides new insight into the effect of flexible ligands and halogen engineering on the wide-range modulation of RTP properties.

Phosphorescent acyclic cucurbituril solid supramolecular multicolour delayed fluorescence behaviour.

Organic photoluminescent macrocyclic hosts have been widely advanced in many fields. Phosphorescent hosts with the ability to bind organic guests have rarely been reported. Herein, acyclic cucurbituril modified with four carboxylic acids (ACB-COOH) is mined to present uncommon purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) at 510 nm with a lifetime of 1.86 μs. Its RTP properties are significantly promoted with an extended lifetime up to 2.12 s and considerable quantum yield of 6.29% after assembly with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. By virtue of the intrinsic self-crimping configuration of ACB-COOH, organic guests, including fluorescence dyes (Rhodamine B (RhB) and Pyronin Y (PyY)) and a drug molecule (morphine (Mor)), could be fully encapsulated by ACB-COOH to attain energy transfer involving phosphorescent acyclic cucurbituril. Ultimately, as-prepared systems are successfully exploited to establish multicolor afterglow materials and visible sensing of morphine. As an expansion of phosphorescent acyclic cucurbituril, the host afterglow color can be readily regulated by attaching different aromatic sidewalls. This study develops the fabrication strategies and application scope of a supramolecular phosphorescent host and opens up a new direction for the manufacture of intelligent long-lived luminescent materials.
