The main aim of this subject review is to present the symbolism and images in William Black's poetry.The subject review refers to inform the readers about the importance of symbols and images. Both images and symbols are expressions in presenting the idea of hidden meanings .These expressions are reflected the romantic issues of human life. The theoratical framework of this subject review is used symbolism theory. The type of analysis is documentary analysis to find out the quotations which contain the symbols and images in the poetry of Black. This paper is also referred to the romantic poetry, Black, and the features of his poetry. The recommendation of this review subject is to be future study to another scholars in terms such as images and symbols in other genera such as short story, drama and novel.

The Verdant Canvas: An Investigation into the Significance of Nature in Romantic Poetry

This paper delves into the profound significance of nature in the works of prominent Romantic poets, including William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Keats. It argues that nature transcends mere backdrop to become a primary character, shaping poetic themes, influencing language, and offering a canvas for exploring philosophical inquiries, spiritual connections, and emotional expression. Analysing key poems through the lens of pantheism, the role of imagination, and the symbolic potential of landscape, the paper illuminates how Romantic poets utilize nature to challenge societal norms, express personal anxieties and aspirations, and ultimately, reveal a nuanced understanding of the human condition in relation to the natural world.

Ann Yearsley and the Poetics and Politics of Breastfeeding

ABSTRACT This article argues that Ann Yearsley, a milkwoman, mother, and poet, not yet fully recovered into the British literary canon, challenges stereotypical representations of breastfeeding mothers created and perpetuated primarily by male authors in Romantic poetry, philosophy, and medical discourse. Her poem “To Mira, on the Care of Her Infant” depicts breastfeeding as a complex labor that requires skill, intelligence, empathy, and discipline. In this poem, Yearsley rejects the arguments of Romantic writers such as William Wordsworth, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and William Cadogan, who depict nursing mothers as passive vessels of milk or substitutes for a nurturing “mother nature.” I further locate Yearsley in rich networks of subscribers, printers, and periodicals adjacent to canon authors and texts. Thinking particularly about the conventions of epic and georgic forms, and their relationship to nationalism, labor, and motherhood, I ultimately show how Yearsley recasts the nursing mother as a subject rather than an object.

DEVOTIONAL POETRY IN TECHNICAL MANUSCRIPT TERMINOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ROSE GARDEN OF PURITY (GOLZĀR-E ṢAFĀ)

Among the wide variety of Persian manuscript categories, there is a distinctive genre that includes recipes on materials and technics of manuscript production. And within this genre, we come across distinctly interesting works that adopt charming romantic poetry to record subjects that are rather dull, dry, and unattractive to the general audience! One of such historical sources is a sixteenth century manuscript entitled Rose Garden of Purity (Golzār-e Ṣafā) by ʿAlī Ṣayrafī, preserved in Paris Central Library. The subject of this research is the manuscript’s impressive Preface in which the poet expresses his sincere devotion to his Creator, and begs for forgiveness – all in melodious poetic language, using technical manuscript terms, colors and pigments as symbols and metaphors. The essay provides an opening remark entitled ‘Manuscripts on Manuscript Production’ followed by and introduction to the manuscript of ‘Golzār-e Ṣafā (Rose Garden of Purity). The little knowledge extracted about ʿAlī Ṣayrafī from the manuscript is shared under ‘The Author-cum-Poet.’ ‘Preface with 12 Couplets’ is the focal point of the essay; there the 12 couplets (24 hemistiches) are presented in the original language (Farsi/Persian) along with an English translation that is published here for the first time. A detailed analysis of technical terms used in the Preface, and an elaboration of their symbolic significance, is presented under ‘Expression of Devotion in Technical Manuscript Vocabulary.’

NATIONAL COLOURING IN ROMANTICISM ON THE EXAMPLE OF LITERARY-CRITICAL STUDIES BY K. ZHUSSIP

Nowadays, the study of Romanticism as a significant phenomenon in literary studies is mainly focused on the investigation of its development under the influence of national characteristics. This research aims to identify the distinctive interpretations of romantic motifs in the works of Kazakh Romanticism poets. Specifically, the article provides an analysis of the development of romantic ideas using Kazakh romantic poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries as a case study, addressing the manifestation of Kazakh national characteristics rooted in Kazakh culture. By analysing the romantic works of Kazakh poets, the conceptual imagery of Romanticism is elucidated. Various research methods, including content analysis and semantic analysis of poetic texts, were used to demonstrate that Romanticism, as an emotional perception of the world and reality, transcends national boundaries. The study concludes that literary creativity is multifaceted, and linguistic analysis helps authors to effectively advocate Romanticism as a means of expressing national characteristics in literature, thereby contributing to the globalisation of cultural understanding. In addition, the study of the emergence of a new hero in romantic works, particularly in religious discourse, as exemplified by the literary-critical contributions of K. Exploring the Fictional World in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner: A Critical Stylistic Study

Critical stylistics is an interesting area that explores ideologies and social concepts, specifically in literary genres. Although critical stylistic studies are increasing, limited studies have explored social concepts in Romantic poetry. Hence, this qualitative study aimed at exploring the construction of the fictional world in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge employing Functional Grammar. The poem was analysed to highlight the linguistic elements that contribute to the construction of the fictional world by Coleridge. Nominal and verbal groups, word order, and deictic expressions were analysed within the framework of Critical Stylistics. The findings revealed that nouns and their descriptions are sometimes incompatible with the fictional world of Coleridge. Verbs are used to express the speaker's full control over the hearer and other characters in the poem. These linguistic phenomena were employed with varied frequencies. The findings of the study, firstly, extended the existing knowledge of the critical stylistic description of poetry, and secondly illustrated how the combination of linguistic elements could present new meanings.

The Portrayal of Female Nurse in the Poetry of John Keats

In his works, John Keats describes female characters variously; they range from the evil seductress of the La Bell Dame Sans Merci and Lamia to the innocent pure Madeline of The Eve of St. Agnes and innocent Isabella of The Pot of Basil. This study continues the tradition of investigating female characters in Keats’s poetry. It examines the depiction of the female nurse in selected poems of John Keats. The study provides interesting observation about the representation of this type of female figure. There is little research about the image of female nurse Romantic poetry. Therefore, this study attempts to see how female nurses are featured in Keats’s poetry. Understanding the way in which nurses were depicted is very important for two reasons: first, it provides a glimpse into the public image of female nurse during Keats’s time. Second, it allows seeing whether Keats had created the image of female nurse based on his daily observations of actual nurses in the medical school or he had created his own stereotype. The study would contribute to the existing literature of women characters in Keats’s poetic works. Key Words: Female nurse, John Keats, romantic poetry, medical humanities, female healers.

A Collaborative Approach to Antiracist Pedagogy

This cowritten Reflections essay describes an upper-division seminar for honours and master’s students that brought together established antiracist pedagogical principles (for example, decentering Britain) with a commitment to hands-on, in-class collaboration. This collaborative dimension buoyed the class’s capacity to encounter both the challenges and insights that the antiracist framework brought to the fore. In a course that sought to engage with Romantic poetry of “labour and longing” in the age of transatlantic slavery, working together became both an object of study and a learning practice. The coauthored nature of this essay therefore advances, beyond the end of term, the importance of listening and learning from one another in the pursuit of more inclusive, wide-ranging, and (very often) discomforting learning environments, even as such environments can only ever be imperfect.

Translating oral effects in East Asia: an Edo period version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms

This paper investigates how Konan Bunzan 湖南文山 confronted the issue of oral effects in the 17 th-century translation Tsūzoku sangokushi 通俗三國志 , a widely-read Japanese serialization of Luo Guanzhong’s 羅貫中 14 th-century Romance of the ThreeKingdoms. Despite being a famed written work, belonging to the ‘Four classic Chinese novels’ (si da qishu 四大奇書 ), Luo’s novel contains numerous oral elements which emulate domestic storytelling culture. The fecundity of the text for orality studies is thus apparent. In examining how the oral effects in Luo’s text were changed in translation into Japanese, I first use Idema’s model of the six markers of ‘the storyteller’s manner’ to evaluate how oral effects are mostly lost in translation, paying attention to certain aspects which are omitted over others. Second, I prove that certain oral elements, such as the inclusion of poems in parallel prose into the narrative, undergo less significant changes. Finally, I assess the usefulness of Idema’s framework beyond its original Sinological context, evaluating its applicability to Tsūzoku sangokushi.

Being and Greenness: Phenomenology of the Poetic Persona and Nature in Dylan Thomas’s Green Poems

Ecopoetry, a relatively recent approach in ecocriticism, refers to nature poems which are closely linked to environmental issues. Deliberating nature in poetry is indeed not something new, yet, what is new in ecopoetry, which is a characteristic that discerns it from, especially Romantic poetry, is that it delineates the relationship between the human and non-human worlds. In other words, ecopoetry stands out from both contemporary nature poetry and Romanticist poetry. It is characterized by the eco-centric view it provides, which axiomatically brings with it the principle of reciprocity, interrelationship, and egalitarianism. In this perspective one might argue that the majority of Dylan Thomas’s (1914-1953) nature poems could be rendered ecopoems as they see nature and natural phenomena as components of a unified and closely connected whole. In these poems Dylan Thomas’s poetic eye adopts an eco-centric verb tense and functions as a camera which record the harmonised movements of the poetic persona and the natural phenomena manifesting the intentionality of the eye of the ecopoet. Through this particular vision Dylan Thomas generates a place out of space in which both human and the other-than-human are deployed, thereby creating a specific subject-object relationship according to which the existence of the human and the non-human are interrelated. This study focuses on the ontological relationship between the poetic persona and nature and analyses the subject-object relationship in Thomas’s “Poem in October”, “The Force That Through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower”, and “Fern Hill” through the lens of phenomenology and object-oriented ontology.

Our project helps to regain an eminent body of European folk art tradition. The reconceptualisation of this heritage emphasises the diversity of social and cultural performance. CARMEN ITN enables 11 doctoral students to engage in academic research, issues of cultural heritage and knowledge transfer.

Romantic poetry can be described with the conflicting terms of tradition and originality: its essence is not originality in the strict sense, but rather the deformation of tradition. The sovereignty of the Romantic poet does not come from the negation of tradition, but from acquiring and using it consciously. The paper discusses two poems of Petőfi which anticipate the unity of experience and representation, but they both end with arguing for the impossibility of such union. In What Shall I Call You? metaphorical expression becomes a questionable method, while in A Time of Fear narrative sense-making connected to temporal experiences turns out to be impossible. Both poems face the limits of expression, although in different ways: What Shall I Call You? deals with the impossibility of verbalising individual experiences, while A Time of Fear comes to the same conclusion regarding collective experiences. The two poems demonstrate it well how Petőfi initiated a phenomenon representative of the late Romantic period.

Songs of (Settler Moves to) Innocence

ABSTRACT This article considers how public recitation or quotation of Romantic poetry in Aotearoa New Zealand can be read within Eve Tuck and K. Wayne Yang’s framework of “settler moves to innocence.” Examining three distinct acts of settler use of Romantic poetry in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, featuring Felicia Hemans, Walter Scott, and Robert Burns, the article suggests that we can interpret these moments through the lens of “generations” or the Māori term “whakapapa.” Understanding these apparently isolated moments as part of a process of generating a settler futurity out of Romantic poetry, and foreclosing Indigenous futurities in the process, the essay proposes that some of Romanticism’s cherished lines and authors have underpinned the settler colonial project in Aotearoa in ways that remain both influential and publicly visible to generations of the twenty-first century.

Simondon and Novalis: Notes for a Romantic Mechanology

Abstract: German Romanticism plays a central role in Gilbert Simondon's writings. In Mode of Existence , Simondon draws on Goethe and E. T. A. Hoffmann to illustrate the tragic consequences of failing to attend to the individuated relationship between landscape and tool. While Novalis is only mentioned in passing, his work presents the most radical form of what might be called Romantic mechanology. With the stated aim of achieving the ideal of perpetual motion, Novalis's poetics highlight the central role literary experimentation plays in technological thinking, revealing how Simondon may shed new light on several key aspects of romantic poetry and philosophy.

METRO-RHYTHMIC PARAMETERS OF A POETIC TEXT (BASED ON THE MATERIAL OF TEXTS WRITTEN BY SPANISH AND RUSSIAN AUTHORS)

Statement of a problem. The objective of the study is a phased analysis of the formal features of a poetic text using a psycholinguistic approach. The poetic text is considered as a special form of emotionally colored speech. The main goal is to determine the universal and nationally specific features in the metro - rhythmic organization of Spanish and Russian poetic texts. Results: The data on the metro - rhythmic organization of Spanish and Russian poetic texts is presented. Based on the classical meters of Greek and Roman poetry, the ways of the formation of national poetic Russian and Spanish traditions are additionally considered. Along with universal features, national-specific features are highlighted. Approaches to the consideration of poetic meters used in Spanish poetic texts, as well as the transition to syllabo-tonic in Russian versification are described. Conclusion. The main conclusion from the presented study can be considered the identification of nationally specific features, consisting of the use of classical meters in certain poetic genres and the formation of mixed genres. As a linguistically significant conclusion about the preference in the use of meters, the authors put forward the ratio of speech rhythm to the meter in national poetry.

‘Ambivalence’ as a Concept in John Clare's Middle and Late Poetry

This paper signifies the contradictory point of view in John Clare’s poetry. Clare (1794-1864) is an English romantic poetry in the nineteenth century, who writes more than ten volumes about nature. So, this study highlights the concept of Psychoanalytic theory which is ‘ambivalence’ and how through this theory can interpret any literary text on the basis of utilizing psychoanalytic methods to literary texts in order to reveal the author's inner emotions such as motives, dreams, as well as wishes. Consequently, the concept of ‘ambivalence’ has a lot in common with the human psyche and its struggles. Sometimes the reader finds the author/poet talking about something real or a notion with pleasant sentiments, and then he refers to the same thing with sad sensations that are not as happy as the first ones without explanations. Here, the critic's job is to identify the reasons behind these contradicting emotions in the piece of literature. Then, two long poems ("Summer Images" and "Child Harold") from different times show opposing perspectives of natural scenes in the poet's environment and abstract thoughts that revolve in his head. Another aspect is Clare’s insanity. Is it only an accusation, or is it true?. Finally, this critical study emphasises the idea that Clare’s poetry always reflects the inconsistency and instability of thoughts and feelings that the poet suffers from due to his irritated psychological and mental condition.

Dijalog Boga i čovjeka: komunikacija u pjesmi Mojsije Silvija Strahimira Kranjčevića

Croatian Romanticism uses a multitude of Judeo-Christian motifs. Kranjčević’s Moses enters into a direct dialogue with God, who is not only a distant transcendental authority, but also a concrete being who responds to the people’s cries. When Moses indicates dissatisfaction with his people’s slavery, God reciprocates with both words and actions. The objective of this article is to look at thedialogues between man and God in the poem Moses in order to contribute to the research of the theme of communication between man and God in Croatian romantic poetry. The main subject of the poem is Moses, who is culturally more relevant for Judaism than for Christianity; his contribution in the Bible is connected to the struggle and active liberation from slavery. Unlike Christianity, Judaism affirms a revolutionary Messiah. In this poem, Moses is the prototype of a universal man in search of God, whereas communication is a prerequisite for solving individual and collective problems.
