The Moroccan leather sector between modernity and authenticity: what problems? What solutions?

The leather sector remains one of the sectors that encounters a multitude of problems on an international scale, particularly in Morocco. Therefore, we carried out a literature review through which we were able to identify the major problems found within the leather sector. After that, we conducted a case study on the Chouara tannery in the Fes Meknes region where we studied the problems found within the sector by using the 5M and SWOT methods as well as the proposal of certain improvement actions with a view to revitalizing the sector. The novelty of our work lies in the proposal of certain functionalities that could play the role of product lifecycle management (PLM) within the sector, such as life management, complaint management and cost management since the notion of PLM is absent within traditional tanneries. In addition, we propose integrating ecological PLM to limit the amount of garbage generated during the execution of tasks.

From PLM 1.0 to PLM 2.0: the evolving role of product lifecycle management (PLM) in the textile and apparel industries

PurposeProduct lifecycle management (PLM) is an enterprise-wide strategy gaining prominence across manufacturing. The fashion industry is a late adopter of PLM, yet within global fashion and textile organisations PLM is now becoming a mainstream approach to optimize core processes. This literature review analyses the latest academic research to establish a broad basis of understanding of PLM in the sector and identify potential future research directions.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review was conducted to investigate the current state and main perspectives of research on PLM in the textiles and apparel sector. The paper adopts the three features (managerial, technological and collaborative) of the definition of PLM by Corallo et al. (2013) as the analytic framework for the 27 papers to illustrate how PLM is framed and conceptualised in the RFA sector.FindingsPLM is at an interesting phase as it evolves from classical PLM 1.0 to connected PLM 2.0. The evolution of PLM from its PDM origins as an IT tool to a critical component of the strategy for digital transformation is reported. The strategic role of suppliers is noted as a critical success factor. Key inhibitors relating to PLM adoption and optimization in the sector are identified as limited holistic and theoretical perspective of PLM coupled with a deficiency in relevant industry skills. It is argued that the transformational potential of PLM 2.0 may not be fully realised without a more coordinated development effort through industrial and academic collaboration.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitations of this study are that it is a literature review of academic papers in the RFA sector papers within the timescale 2000–2018. PLM 1.0 has dominated in this time period however the potential trajectory of connected PLM 2.0 is beginning to emerge.Practical implicationsThe results from this paper indicate that there is a lack of research on PLM in the sector and concludes by suggesting promising future research possibilities: further empirical and case studies on organisations implementing a PLM strategy; studies reporting on the contribution of PLM to address the challenges of sustainability, traceability and transparency in the industry and inter-industry collaborations; studies with knowledge management theories specifically applied to the textile and apparel sector; and the opportunity for academic and industry collaboration on the development of PLM to meet these needs.Originality/valueTo the best of the author's knowledge, no systematic literature review on this topic has previously been published in academic journals. Given levels of investment in PLM platforms in the sector, both practitioners in companies and the academic community might find the review and agenda for future research useful.

An optimization model for energy-efficient machining for sustainable production

Sustainable production plays an important role in product lifecycle management by considering the social sustainability. Energy-efficient machining is an efficient approach for sustainable production in current manufacturing sectors. Although many related efforts have been achieved, a comprehensive energy optimization approach oriented to manufacturing parts is still a challenge. Therefore, this paper selects Standard for the Exchange of Product model data-Numerical Control (STEP-NC) as the enabling technology to achieve energy-efficient machining. An optimization model is proposed based on the energy calculation method using the workingstep in STEP-NC. An improved ant colony optimization (ACO) solution, consisting of encoding and decoding, initialization, machining scheme generation, idea of local multiple iteration, evaluation, pheromone evaporation and update, is presented. A part with typical manufacturing features is applied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The generated solution can provide a comprehensive machining scheme for low energy demandI by improving the efficiency with 25% for solving the optimization problem.

PRODUCT LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK FOR BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION

The role of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) in business change varies in scope and impact. PLM initiatives range from Information System (IS) change to strategic business transformation, and capabilities to implement PLM successfully are unclear. The paper identifies a PLM framework for transition and related variables. Understanding these variables influence successful PLM transformation. The methods used in this paper include a literature review on existing frameworks available for PLM initiatives. This paper is based on a PLM case study done 2011 – 2015 when the company’s strategy transformed it from an engineering company to a product and service company. The results show strategy driven PLM transformation impacting a company at many levels, and PLM focusing on IS driven process harmonisation fails due to limited knowledge of the business models, products and services. The conclusions are that PLM is at the core of business transformation and cross-functional impacting products, services and customers.

Product lifecycle management approach to design a product and its optimised supply chain

This paper deals with two major issues for current manufacturing organisations: the product design and the supply chain design. These problems are usually solved separately, but in recent years, approaches were proposed to tackle these two issues together. Integrating product and supply chain optimisation is relevant. Indeed, the design decisions made in the early phases of product design will have significant impact upon future manufacturing and logistical activities. In this paper, we investigate more precisely the role of product lifecycle management (PLM) as an integrating element and a supply chain optimiser. PLM is a business strategy that aims to collaboratively manage the product centred activities during the whole product lifecycle and through the extended enterprise. In fact, PLM enables a supply chain to become much more competitive by an effective collaboration among all its partners throughout the product lifecycle, particularly, their involvement in the early phases of product design. We propose a methodology based on PLM approach to design simultaneously the product and its optimised supply chain.

Reliability prediction for evolutionary product in the conceptual design phase using neural network-based fuzzy synthetic assessment

Reliability prediction plays an important role in product lifecycle management. It has been used to assess various reliability indices (such as reliability, availability and mean time to failure) before a new product is physically built and/or put into use. In this article, a novel approach is proposed to facilitate reliability prediction for evolutionary products during their early design stages. Due to the lack of sufficient data in the conceptual design phase, reliability prediction is not a straightforward task. Taking account of the information from existing similar products and knowledge from domain experts, a neural network-based fuzzy synthetic assessment (FSA) approach is proposed to predict the reliability indices that a new evolutionary product could achieve. The proposed approach takes advantage of the capability of the back-propagation neural network in terms of constructing highly non-linear functional relationship and combines both the data sets from existing similar products and subjective knowledge from domain experts. It is able to reach a more accurate prediction than the conventional FSA method reported in the literature. The effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method are demonstrated via a case study of the fuel injection pump and a comparative study.

Why Care About PLM?

This article studies the role of product lifecycle management (PLM) in industrial engineering. The basic concepts of PLM—product data management, engineering change management, and product structure management—were also discussed. PLM provides data and management capabilities to reduce the non-value-added tasks required of engineers. It also increases engineering productivity, provides insight into engineering efforts, and improves product quality and customer satisfaction. Companies are receiving significant value and return from their PLM investments. Many companies begin implementing PLM by establishing a single source of product data, or product record. Most PLM solutions offer sophisticated interfaces to many design automation and office applications, which reduce the need to capture, store, and validate product data. Product designs are maintained as assemblies and parts in the PLM system, and that arrangement allows engineers easy searching when they are looking, for example, for legacy components, with software providing a critical control and value portion of the product. With PLM, disparate engineering teams work more collaboratively.

Key characteristics management in product lifecycle management: A survey of methodologies and practices

Key characteristics (KCs) play a significant role in product lifecycle management (PLM) and in collaborative and global product development. Over the last decade, KCs methodologies and tools have been studied and practiced in several domains of the product lifecycle, and many world-class companies have introduced KCs considerations into their product development practices. However, there has been no systematic survey of KCs techniques, methodologies, and practices in this respect. This paper aims to give a comprehensive survey of KCs methodologies, and practices from the perspective of enterprise integration and PLM. The paper firstly presents a holistic framework of KCs methodologies and practices through the product lifecycle, and summarizes the fundamentals of KCs including their definition and classification, KC flowdown, and the identification and selection of KCs. A review of the KCs methods and practices in the product lifecycle is then presented, particularly in engineering design, manufacturing planning, production and testing as well as information and knowledge management respectively. Finally, the problems and challenges for future research on KCs techniques are discussed.

Product Lifecycle Management: Closing the Knowledge Loops

Competitive success of manufacturing firms is by and large determined by the success of the products they introduce to the market. This is why companies continuously try to improve the efficacy of their product realization process. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is a business solution which aims to streamline the flow of information about the product and related processes throughout the product’s lifecycle such that the right information in the right context at the right time can be made available. Yet, few organizations are positioned to reap the true benefits of PLM. One major reason for this is a lack of clear understanding of what PLM is, its core features and functions, and its relationship to the myriad of current software tools. This paper aims to do that and also elaborates on the role of PLM as a knowledge management system.
