The Role of Environmental Uncertainty, Firm Size, and Enterprise Risk Management to Improve Firm Performance

Global warming and other environmental problems are a major concern because related to corporate sustainability issues, so research is needed regarding various factors that influence company performance. This quantitative research was conducted to determine and analyze the influence of environmental uncertainty, firm size, and enterprise risk management on firm performance. The population in this study is the energy sector listed on Bursa Malaysia during 2017-2021. The sample selection used the purposive sampling method. Hypothesis testing using panel data regression with the E-Views 12. The results of this study show that, (1) environmental uncertainty has no effect on firm performance, (2) firm size has a positive effect on firm performance, (3) enterprise risk management has a positive effect on firm performance

THE MODERATING ROLE OF ENVIRONMENTAL UNCERTAINTY IN THE EFFECT OF STRATEGIC CHANGE ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

The increasingly competitive environment has led to the reduction of firm performance. Companies are strived to be able to create strategic competitiveness to maintain their competitive advantage, so that firm performance can be maintained. Strategic change is a company effort to adapt in a competitive environment. In addition, changes in the external environment create environmental uncertainty that will worsen firm performance, so strategic change is the primary choice for companies to improve performance when environmental uncertainty increases. This study aims to analyze the effect of strategic change on firm performance, as well as the role of environmental uncertainty in moderating the relationship. Using purposive sampling method, this study uses 503 data of manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during 2016-2020 period. This study uses multiple linear regression analysis and moderated regression analysis as its analysis technique. The results of this study indicate that strategic change has a positive and significant effect on firm performance and environmental uncertainty is able to strengthen this influence.

Research on the Relationship between Network Insight, Supply Chain Integration and Enterprise Performance

Based on the resource orchestration theory, this study built a research model to understand the effect of supply chain network insight and supply chain integration on enterprise performance. We also involved the contingency theory to investigate the moderating effect of environmental uncertainty on supply chain integration and enterprise performance. We collected the data samples from 405 enterprises and used the SEM approach to verify the model. Results demonstrated the direct path of network insight to promote enterprise performance, the indirect path of supply chain integration as a mediating factor, and the role of environmental uncertainty as a boundary condition for the relationship between supply chain integration and enterprise performance, thus making theoretical and practical contributions to the management of supply chain resources and relationships and the performance enhancement of manufacturing.

When Symbols Matter: Uncertainty, Entrepreneurial Identity and Firm Performance in Mexico

Extant research reveals conflicting empirical results on the performance implications of firm names. We propose that the inconsistent findings in the literature are due in part to prior studies not considering the role of environmental uncertainty in a firm’s social environment. We argue that the symbolic value of a firm name on performance will be higher in uncertain conditions because these conditions encourage audiences to rely more on subjective symbols of a firm's internal identity. We test our hypotheses in the context of Mexico from 2001-2006 which corresponds with increasing rates of homicides of women, largely brought on by warring Drug Trafficking Organizations. We find that firm names that align with key institutionalized values are associated with higher firm performance in uncertain times, but that younger firms benefit to a great extent from this strategy. We contribute to the literature on cultural entrepreneurship and organizational identity.

Supply chain integration and green innovation, the role of environmental uncertainty: Evidence from Jordan

Prior research in several industries, particularly manufacturing industries, has confirmed the use of supply chain integration (SCI) to achieve green innovation (GI). Despite this, there has been very little research into the effects of SCI on the GI of manufacturing businesses. As a result, the current study was carried out to close this gap in the literature. Data from 231 manufacturing businesses in Jordan was used to validate a framework of several hypotheses about the relationships involving SCI and GI. SCI (customer integration (CI) and supplier integration (SI) have beneficial benefits on the green product and process innovation (GPDI & GPRI), according to the results of structural equation modeling. SI's effects on green products and process innovation are moderated by environmental unpredictability. The effects of CI on green product innovation are being moderated by environmental unpredictability. Environmental uncertainty, on the other hand, does not moderate the impacts of CI on green process innovation. This research adds to our knowledge of the SCI-GI link.

EFFECT OF LEADERSHIP ON BMI AND COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OF SMES

This study investigated the relationships between transformational leadership (TL), entrepreneurial leadership (EL), business model innovation (BMI) and competitive advantage, as well as the role of environmental uncertainty in these relationships. The importance of BMI and leadership style for the firms and the gaps identified in literature motivated the need for this paper. Previous literature has not fully explained in detail the antecedents of BMI or how BMI improves competitive advantage of organisations. Thus, an empirical model was used to analyse data gathered from a survey of 474 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from several sectors in Greece. The findings reveal the contribution of leadership styles on BMI, the direct contribution of TL and EL on competitive advantage, as well as the contribution of BMI in competitive advantage in all responding SMEs, those SMEs with low scores of business environmental uncertainty and those SMEs with high scores of business environmental uncertainty.

Effect of opportunity seizing capability on new market development and small and medium-sized enterprise performance: Role of environmental uncertainty in the IT industry

With the rapid evolution of technologies and markets in the IT industry, it is especially crucial for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the IT sector to possess the dynamic capability of seizing opportunities. This paper adopts the concept of “opportunity–seizing capability (OSC)” from the perspective of dynamic capability, and investigates its impact on relative firm performance via new market development. Furthermore, we examine whether environmental uncertainty influences the effect of a firm's OSC. Our hierarchical ordinary least squares regression results obtained using the data of 215 IT SMEs indicate that new market development is an important link between a firm's OSC and relative performance. The positive effect of a firm's OSC on new market development is stronger under a highly uncertain business environment. The findings indicate that enhancing an IT SME's OSC is crucial for its survival, particularly under an uncertain business environment.

The Influence of Motivational Leadership that is Moderated by Perceived Uncertainty and Work Discipline on Employee Performance

The aim of this research is to determine the impact of moderated motivational leadership and work discipline on employee performance. Hypothesis testing uses 77employees in a State-Owned Enterprises in Bandung with as samples. The sampling technique uses simple random sampling. The survey research method is used to answer the formulated problem statement. Data analysis using partial least square Warp PLS 5. The results found a significant impact of moderated motivational leadership and work discipline on employee performance. Where path coefficients motivational leadership = 0.416 with p-value = 0.000, path coefficients of work discipline is 0.201 with p-value = 0.025 and perceived environmental uncertainty that moderates motivational leadership with path coefficients = -0.194 and p-value = 0.029. The overall effect show from the adjusted R2 = 0.257. The result referring to the calculation of data, the proposed hypothesis can be accepted. This result describes the significant influence of moderated motivational leadership perceived environmental uncertainty and work discipline on employee performance. The research implications show that the role of environmental uncertainty needs to be taken attention by management so that the effectiveness of leaders in implementing direction and employee empowerment can be optimized. Besides, attention to the increase in the discipline of work remains to maintained so that it can produce the performance that is following the targets set by the by the company.

Developing and validating an innovation drivers' measurement instrument in the agri-food sector

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to develop an instrument that measures a set of dynamic drivers for managing innovation capability; and to validate this instrument in the agri-food sector.Design/methodology/approachBased on the innovation drivers identified after an extensive literature review, a measurement instrument was developed and then empirically validated through collecting preliminary data from 434 Greek agri-food companies. Exploratory factor analysis was applied, while their validity was confirmed through confirmatory factor analysis.FindingsThe analysis of the data confirms a valid measurement instrument of innovation drivers which consists of five drivers, namely, collaboration, environmental dynamism, knowledge orientation, quality orientation, and process management. The level of the five innovation drivers by the sample companies is deemed high, though not, however, excellent.Research limitations/implicationsA research challenge is to understand how the five innovation drivers are associated with agri-food business performance taking into consideration the role of environmental uncertainty. Moreover, it is worth validating this measurement instrument using multiple indicators for innovation drivers.Practical implicationsThe main contribution of this paper is that it develops a valid measurement instrument that can be used by agri-food companies as a self-assessment tool and a benchmarking tool. In doing so, suitable strategies can be selected in order for an agri-food to improve its innovation capability.Originality/valueThe proposed model provides plausible guidelines that advance innovation management research in the agri-food companies.

Hence, this study aims to examine the factors influencing the establishment of these systems. By literature review of previous studies, some factors have been derived for the development model. The results indicate that the role of environmental uncertainty is critical in achieving the benefits of inter-organisational information systems implementation. Moreover, it is suggested that implementation of inter-organisational information systems and integration of information between supply chain members has a positive impact on the overall chain performance.

Human resource flexibility and sustainability: the moderating role of environmental uncertainty

This study investigates the moderating role of environmental uncertainty perception on the relationship between flexibility and sustainability of HR. A data from 266 mangers in Jordanian banks were collected using a valid questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to ensure fitness of the measurement model to the environment of banks in Jordan. Proposed model, hypotheses and moderator effect were then tested using structural equations modelling. Results revealed a significant impact of HR flexibility on HR sustainability. The moderator negatively affects the relationship between functional flexibility and HR sustainability, and positively for behavioural flexibility. Results did not support the impact of skill flexibility on HR sustainability, nor did they support the impact of the moderator on that relationship. The study recommends that Jordanian banks can use the developed measurement scale to identify the functional, behavioural and skill aspects of HR. As well as important aspects of HR sustainability and uncertainties.

Leadership Attributions: The Role of Environmental Uncertainty and Communal Leadership Schemas

How do members of self-managing teams attribute leadership to each other? Although scholars have assumed that people attribute leadership on the basis of members' behaviors, leadership attributions may be a function of relational schema people hold and situations teams operate in. This research argues that prior research has overlooked the crucial role of the situation in engendering leadership attributions. Building on recent research leadership structure schemas, I argue that these schemas about sharing leadership are a function of team members' perception of the situation. When members perceive the environment to be more uncertain, they believe that more communal approaches to leadership are appropriate. This communal leadership schema thus increases the likelihood that they will attribute leadership to several teammates. I test these hypotheses in two studies. Study 1 uses multi-wave data from student project teams (n = 352 individuals, 46 teams) to show that, when individuals perceive the environment as more uncertain, they adopt more communal leadership schemas and thus are more likely to attribute leadership to multiple members. In Study 2 (n = 397 individuals), I replicate these findings in an experimental study where I varied descriptions of the certainty of the environment, then measured changes in communal leadership schemas and attributions of leadership to fictitious team members. This research contributes to the literature by emphasizing the attributional views of leadership and the role of the situation in shaping communal leadership schemas and informal leadership attributions in teams.

Impact of the Strategic Role of IT on Explorative and Exploitative Innovation Activities: The Role of Environmental Uncertainty

ABSTRACTWhile numerous studies have examined the relationship between IT and innovation, comparatively few explore IT's contribution to explorative and exploitative innovation activities. A better understanding of the influence of IT's strategic role on exploration and exploitation innovation is critical for tracing the complex IT–innovation relationship. To address this gap, we develop a theoretical model that describes the contingent relationship between IT's strategic role and explorative and exploitative innovation activities. By testing the model using a multisource, matched sample of data from Chinese firms, we find that the IT roles of automation, information, and transformation differentially influence exploration and exploitation, underscoring IT's multifaceted role in organizational innovation activities. Specifically, IT‐enabled transformation positively affects exploration, and IT‐enabled information positively affects both exploration and exploitation. We also evidence the moderating effect of environmental uncertainty in these relationships by uncovering that IT‐enabled automation is negatively related to exploration, whereas IT‐enabled transformation positively affects both explorative and exploitative innovation activities with high environmental uncertainty. Our article contributes to the knowledge in the field by demonstrating the value of a firm's transformative IT investments to develop explorative and exploitative innovation activities in the presence of environmental uncertainty.

Strategic human resource practices for innovation performance

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the conception of strategic human resource practices (SHRPs) for establishing innovation performance (IP) in the tourist hotel industry. In this research, the author has also studied the influence of knowledge management capacity (KMC) as a mediator between the two and the role of environmental uncertainty (EU) in moderating the relation between SHRP and KMC.Design/methodology/approachData were collected through survey method from the employees and managers of the tourist hotels in Jharkhand, India. Furthermore, 368 customer contact employees and 46 managers’ responses were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and SPSS macro named PROCESS.FindingsThe interpretation of the empirical results signifies SHRP influence on IP and KMC as a mediator between SHRP and IP. Additionally, the role of EU in positively mitigating the interaction between SHRP and KMC was seen.Originality/valueThe present research work adds to the subsisting literature by empirically fortifying the proposed hypotheses. Additionally, current studies focused on hospitality and tourism industry operating in a developed economy, the present study is an attempt to explore a comprehensive and theoretically grounded relationship between SHRP, KMC and IP with the help of resource-based view in an emerging economy.

Firms’ entrepreneurial orientation and the adoption of quality management practices

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between firms’ entrepreneurial orientations (EOs) and the adoption of quality management (QM) practices. The role of environmental uncertainty as the moderator of the former relationship is considered.Design/methodology/approachUsing theories and related empirical evidences, two research hypotheses were argued and proposed. These hypotheses were tested using data collected from a unique sample of 301 Uruguayan and Argentinean manufacturing companies with more than 20 workers assessed through personal interviews. The empirical methodology includes statistic treatment for scale validation, statistic descriptive techniques and regression analysis.FindingsFirms’ EO is determinant for the adoption of QM practices. The environmental uncertainty strengthens the positive impact of EO on the adoption of QM practices, mainly human resource management practices.Research limitations/implicationsThe data come from a particular geographical context and refer to manufacturing plants. It would be interesting to extend the scope of this study to services. The collection of data from only one individual in each organization can generate a potential problem with using single-source information.Practical implicationsInnovative manufacturing companies that try to adopt advanced QM practices will benefit from hiring managers who are able to take risks, and to seek a long-term orientation toward being aggressive with their environment, especially in highly competitive contexts. Mustering these features may ensure perseverance in the adoption of advanced manufacturing practices, even in the presence of complex and uncertain environments.Originality/valueThe principal contribution of this paper is that it advances the study of the intersection between operations management and entrepreneurship, analyzing how firms’ EO affects the adoption of new methods and practices in manufacturing. Furthermore, it is important to highlight the fact that the authors use data from a unique survey of manufacturing companies from Argentina and Uruguay in the southern cone of Latin America. The authors also contribute to the open debate about the universality of QM practices.

However, it is difficult to ascertain the implications of these errors unless the raw data is made available. Unfortunately, the authors were not able to provide the raw data despite repeated requests. We feel it is important for our readership to be aware of potential issues with the results reported in this article. An empirical-collaborative model of supply chain agility

Supply chain agility has been investigated from multiple perspectives. Without supply chain collaboration, supply chain agility cannot be achieved. The current study aims to investigate the influence of seven dimensions of supply chain collaboration viz., information sharing, goal congruence, decision synchronisation, incentive alignment, resource sharing, collaborative communication and joint knowledge creation on supply chain agility. As the proposed relationships may vary depending on the context, the moderating role of environmental uncertainty has also been investigated. Based on empirical data collected from 164 logistics and supply chain professionals, the findings develops a priority order for the seven dimensions of SC collaboration required for SC agility development.

Inter-organizational Performance in the Automotive Supply Networks: The Role of Environmental Uncertainty, Specific Investments and Formal Contracts

This paper explores the impact of environmental uncertainty, specific investments and formal contracts on the performance of automaker-supplier relationships from two major theoretical perspectives: transaction cost theory (TCT) and resource-based view (RBV). The empirical data were collected from the component suppliers in the Austrian automotive industry. The findings show that, based on TCT, environmental uncertainty and transaction-specific investment negatively and, based on RBV, relationship-specific investments positively influence inter-organizational performance. In addition, formal contract reduces the negative performance effect of transaction-specific investment and environmental uncertainty, and environmental uncertainty increases the positive impact of relationship-specific investments on inter-organizational performance. Overall, we contribute to the inter-organizational performance literature by combining TCT and RBV to explain relationship performance.
