This study is a qualitative study that presents the role and meaning of news comments and implications for elementary school news literacy education by deeply analyzing elementary school students’ acceptance of news comments. For elementary school students, news comments are a mechanism that stimulates interest and interest in news and social issues, and are an auxiliary device that helps them understand news. In addition, news comments frequently expose the context of free communication between people so that they can indirectly participate in social and political conversations and contact various disagreements. And for elementary school students, news comments are a role model for learning the competencies necessary as citizens, such as the attitude of being interested in and participating in social problems and how to express opinions on social problems. According to the results of the study, elementary school students are exposed to negative communication such as criticism and slander by encountering news in the online world, but even in them, they have screened jade stones and showed the possibility of accepting sound social discourse. Therefore, this study demanded serious reflection and reflection on the online news comments and comment spaces currently being produced, and suggested that it is necessary to find ways to use news comments educationally to foster healthy citizenship for future generations. In order to increase the effectiveness of news literacy education for elementary school students in the future, it is necessary to actively utilize news comments in the form of pros and cons and provide educational materials applying various news comment frames to supplement the cognitive abilities of elementary school students. And concrete educational measures should be prepared for practical use and critical acceptance of social approval clues.

Reconstructing The Role Of Parents and Teachers In Islamic Education

This research aims to explain the importance of reconstructing the roles of parents and teachers in Islamic education. It is a descriptive study utilizing a literature review. The roles of parents and teachers in Islamic education need to be reconstructed because children are growing up in a different era from their parents and teachers. The millennial era, characterized by technology reliance, makes children quickly adapt to their surroundings. However, to protect children from the negative influences of the times, parents and teachers must possess competencies beyond merely educating and teaching in the real world but also guiding them in the virtual world. Therefore, Islamic education for children must be preserved, and parents and teachers must continue to be educators, guides, motivators, and role models for their children so that they can compete in their time while maintaining good moral character according to Islamic teachings.

The study aims to determine the factors influencing the definition of moral ideals among adolescents and the peculiarities of pedagogical support of their moral choice. The main approaches are represented by the authors’ research tools. In total, 3,443 teenagers aged 11–14 years participated in the study that had been conducted since 2017 till 2023. The study revealed that when predicting their ideals, children focus on individuals who are successful, smart, goal-oriented, kind, talented, and ready to overcome obstacles in achieving the goal. TikTokers, bloggers, streamers, YouTubers, programmers, gamers, and e-sportsmen serve as role models for teenagers. The virtual space has a major impact on the moral choices of the new generation. The authors found out the key factors (intellectual, motivational, emotional, volitional, objective and practical, existential, and self-control) that influence an individual’s perception of moral ideals. The risk of forming values unworthy of imitation through social media and the risk of creating an unrealistic idealised ‘self’ projected by the virtual space were identified. The paper concludes that teacher’s guidance in shaping the children’s moral choices is needed.

Impact of female role models and mentors in career development: evidence from the Korean Central Government

ABSTRACT Considerable research has been conducted on women’s career development within the Korean government. However, there is little to no research that targets female civil servants at specific grades – in this case Grade 5 – to examine organizational factors that may influence their decision to remain in public service or strive for higher-ranked positions. Utilizing survey data from 81 female civil servants from the Korean Central Government, this study employed ordered logistic regression and qualitative analysis to investigate the perceived influence of same-gender role models and mentors, including their impact on promotion aspirations and turnover intentions. Findings reveal that these influential figures have a nuanced impact on women’s turnover intentions; however, they did not lead to a significant impact on promotion aspirations. Still, the women in this study reported other positive influences from same-gender role models and mentors, such as workplace guidance, emotional and cognitive support, assistance with problem-solving, and career planning.

Professionalism in Residency Training: The Learning Environment for Professionalism Survey.

Role modelling is important in developing professionalism with a need for reliable, evidence-based tools to assess professionalism in the learning environment (LE). The Learning Environment for Professionalism (LEP) survey is brief, anonymous and balanced assessing medical trainees' and attendings' positive and negative professionalism behaviours that can be tracked longitudinally and identify problem areas in the LE. Seven training programs agreed to facilitate administration of the LEP survey at four hospitals in Ottawa, Canada. The survey was carried out iteratively between 2013 and 2020. A total of 3783 LE ratings of training programs and hospitals were assessed longitudinally using univariate linear regression. A Bonferroni corrected p-value of ≤.0045 was used to account for multiple comparisons. Positive professional behaviours were observed across time with some of the negative behaviors having improved. A negative signal was found, with attendings appearing to be treating patients unfairly because of their financial status, ethnic background, sexual or religious preferences. Applying LEP survey longitudinally across diverse training programs and institutions is feasible and may assist programs to identify areas requiring attention and acknowledging areas of exemplary professionalism. Continuous monitoring of LE to meet requirements of accrediting bodies can also be considered an important quality improvement metric.

Critical appraisal of the chorioallantoic membrane model for studying angiogenesis in preclinical research.

Angiogenesis, the biological mechanism by which new blood vessels are generated from existing ones, plays a vital role in growth and development. Effective preclinical screening is necessary for the development of medications that may enhance or inhibit angiogenesis in the setting of different disorders. Traditional in vitro and, in vivo models of angiogenesis are laborious and time-consuming, necessitating advanced infrastructure for embryo culture. A challenge encountered by researchers studying angiogenesis is the lack of appropriate techniques to evaluate the impact of regulators on the angiogenic response. An ideal test should possess reliability, technical simplicity, easy quantifiability, and, most importantly, physiological relevance. The CAM model, leveraging the extraembryonic membrane of the chicken embryo, offers a unique combination of accessibility, low cost, and rapid development, making it an attractive option for angiogenesis assays. This review evaluates the strengths and limitations of the CAM model in the context of its anatomical and physiological properties, and its relevance to human pathophysiological conditions. Its abundant capillary network makes it a common choice for studying angiogenesis. The CAM assay serves as a substitute for animal models and offers a natural setting for developing blood vessels and the many elements involved in the intricate interaction with the host. Despite its advantages, the CAM model's limitations are notable. These include species-specific responses that may not always extrapolate to humans and the ethical considerations of using avian embryos. We discuss methodological adaptations that can mitigate some of these limitations and propose future directions to enhance the translational relevance of this model. This review underscores the CAM model's valuable role in angiogenesis research and aims to guide researchers in optimizing its use for more predictive and robust preclinical studies. The highly vascularized chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of fertilized chicken eggs is a cost-effective and easily available method for screening angiogenesis, in comparison to other animal models.

Association between beliefs in medical conspiracy theories and health behaviors among medical and healthcare students. Implications for professional practice.

While conspiracy theories cover many different themes, medical conspiracy theories (MCTs) have become particularly prevalent in modern societies. As beliefs in MCTs can become a source of "infodemics", influence individual health behaviors and cause distrust in medical institutions and personnel, healthcare workers must find ways to overturn patients' conspiracy thinking. However, as the medical world is not free of these beliefs, in this study, we investigated beliefs in MCTs among medical and health science students and their association with reported health behaviors. Our sample was derived from a self-administered, anonymized, computer-assisted web survey conducted among 1,175 medical and health science students enrolled at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland. From a set of twenty different MCTs, one-third of students rejected all of them, 18% believed in one, 15% in two, 10% in three, and 24% supported four or more conspiracy theories. In addition, many students were hesitant or unsure about MCTs. We also found that nursing and midwifery students were the most likely to believe in MCTs, while medical and dental students were the least supportive. Support for MCTs was higher among students in the early years of their studies and who declared themselves religious and conservative. This study also highlights the association between students' support for MCTs and their reported health behaviors, including avoiding vaccinations, using alternative medicine, taking vitamin C, or using social media as an essential source of health information. As medical and health science students are prone to conspiratorial thinking, they should be trained to act as a trusted and reliable source of medical information, to mitigate conspiratorial beliefs, and to act as role models for their patients and society, effectively shaping health behaviors in the population.

Who you are and who you want to be: a pilot study of dental hygiene students' professional identity formation

BackgroundDental hygienists play a crucial role in providing successful community-based healthcare for patients. They should perform expected roles to address various tasks, in response to changing social contexts and needs. The value created by the role of a dental hygienist closely relates to job satisfaction, which is formed through daily clinical experiences, and in the process of professional identity formation, learners must internalise a value system. This study examined how dental hygiene students developed their professional identities during their undergraduate education.MethodsThis study adopted a case study approach based on an interpretivist paradigm. Ten dental hygiene students in their final year were selected, and semi-structured interviews were conducted regarding changes in their views on dental hygienists and their identities as health professionals. The data were analysed using a thematic analysis approach to identify the components of their professional identities and the factors influencing identity formation.ResultsStudents pre-professional identities were transformed into inter-professional collaborators with a more patient-centric and generalist perspective. The following three aspects of professional identity were identified: their own roles in promoting oral and general health, broadening the perspectives on professional competencies of dental hygienists, and the context of inter-professional collaborative practice. Additionally, this study identified some key factors influencing their identity formation, namely role models, clinical experiences, health care system, and social relationships with others. Among these factors, role models and clinical experiences were the most influential.ConclusionsThis study suggests that recognition of professional roles during preclinical education, and collaborative opportunities in clinical education are necessary to promote professional identity formation. Such learning opportunities enable students to reflect on the kind of dental hygienist they want to become. Moreover, for the students to continuously pursue their profession with a sense of fulfilment, educators need to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges the students would encounter as they transition from their undergraduate degrees to employment. This understanding is essential for developing and supporting communities where dental hygienists connect, help, and learn from each other.

How do mandatory emergency medicine rotations contribute to the junior residents’ professional identity formation: a qualitative study

BackgroundThis study aims to investigate the impact of short-term mandatory emergency medicine rotations on professional identity formation of Japanese junior residents. Using situated learning theory as a theoretical framework, we explore how this rotation, which is part of a two-year Junior residency in the transition period from students to qualified physicians.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative study conducting semi-structured face-to-face interviews with Year 1 postgraduate residents in the 2020–2021 classes of the junior residency program in Okinawa Chubu Hospital, Japan (n = 10). The data obtained from the interviews were analysed using inductive thematic analysis to identify the themes regarding professional identity formation.ResultsFour main themes regarding professional identity formation emerged from the data analysis: patient care, teamwork, role models, and peers. Junior residents said they had the opportunity to participate in the emergency department community and experience training in authentic clinical contexts. Clinical exposure influenced the professional identity formation of the junior residents. Nurses and peers played a crucial role in this. Junior residents see the training in the emergency department as the beginning of their careers.ConclusionShort-term mandatory rotations enabled junior residents to integrate into the emergency department community, demonstrating autonomy and responsibility. These experiences fostered their professional identity by helping their socialisation within the community of practice.

Leading by example from high-status individuals: exploring a crucial missing link in climate change mitigation

Behaviour change has great potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions quickly, helping to prevent dangerous global warming. Some of the most impactful changes are: flying less, eating less meat, driving electric cars, improving home energy efficiency, increased use of public transport and active travel. However, these choices have proved elusive at scale and are rarely encouraged or modelled by high-status individuals (“leaders”), despite established knowledge about the influence of leaders as role models. Applying theories of embodied leadership and credibility enhancing displays, our novel pre-registered survey experiment (n = 1267) reveals that visible leading by example from politicians and celebrities significantly increases the willingness of members of the UK public to make these high-impact low-carbon choices. In addition, leading by example greatly increases perceptions of leader credibility, trustworthiness, competence, and favourability. We find no significant effects of leading by example on people’s wider perceptions of climate change, but a strong “appetite for leadership” among the public is revealed. In light of these findings, we discuss how embodied leadership by way of visible low-carbon behaviour from leaders may provide a crucial “missing link” for climate change mitigation.

Canadian female perspectives on training in the boys club: advanced therapeutic endoscopy

Abstract Introduction Unequal female representation in the field of advanced therapeutic endoscopy (ATE) has been recently highlighted in the United States. Previous attempts to determine the barriers to entry into the career have reported a lack of mentorship, patriarchy, inflexible hours/calls and exposure to fluoroscopy. Canadian trainee exposure to ATE and differences in experience between men and women is unknown. Objectives We sought to determine the barriers to pursuing a career in ATE, specifically focussing on the perspectives of Canadian female gastroenterology fellows. Methods An online survey was developed and distributed to Canadian gastroenterology fellows enrolled in Royal College-accredited programs in 2021-2022 Results Responses were received from gastroenterology fellows at 12 of the 14 Canadian programs. The response rate was 46% (n = 42, 16 female respondents and 26 male respondents). An equal proportion of male (42%, n = 11) and female (38%, n = 6) trainees indicated interest in a career in ATE. Thirty-eight per cent (n = 6) of female trainees felt that they had inadequate mentorship opportunities/role models within ATE, in comparison to 4% (n = 1) of males (P = .004). Furthermore, 19% (n = 3) of females felt that this lack of mentorship/role models was a primary deterrent from pursuing ATE as a career, in comparison to 0% of males (P = .02). There was equal self-perceived competency surrounding ATE knowledge between both men and women. Conclusions Female gastroenterology fellows in Canada lack mentorship and role models in ATE, which seems to be a primary deterrent from pursuing it as a career when compared to their male counterparts. Recognizing and addressing the lack of female leadership and visibility is necessary to improve parity and encourage women to train in the male-dominated field of ATE.

Picture Your Science Educators: Through the Eyes of the Student Teachers

This study was aimed to examine and compare the opinions of science teachers studying at undergraduate and master levels in Norway and Turkey towards their instructors. 22 students studying in science fields at a state university in Norway and 28 students studying in science fields at a state university in Turkey participated in the research. The students participating in the research were selected on the basis of a easily accessible sample. Research data was collected using a structured interview form consisting of 5 open-ended questions that questioned students' opinions about the instructors. The data obtained at the end of the research was analyzed using content analysis and descriptive analysis methods. Considering the findings, the themes of student opinions were obtained: 21st century skills of the science instructors, methods and techniques they use in the classroom, the effects of the science instructors on themselves, what I would do if I were a science educator, and role modeling. While some of the participating students in Turkey found the lecturers inadequate in terms of 21st Century skills, most of the students in Norway found the lecturers sufficient. While student teachers in Turkey emphasized that science instructors ' interaction and communication with students and a strong academic infrastructure are important, participants in Norway pointed out that science instructors have positive effects that contribute to being a good teacher. However, participating students in both groups stated that more traditional teaching methods were used in the classroom. It was determined that students had negative opinions as well as positive opinions. The two most important components of the university learning environment that are meaningful to each other are students and science instructors. Therefore, it is thought that more qualified teaching activities will be realized if science instructors care about what students think about them

The article discusses the problem of rejecting the image of beauty in modern dance. It is indicated that the theme of despair, fear, violence and depression begins to dominate in modern dance since its inception in the 20s of the last century. The characteristic features of movements and plasticity in expressionist dance, in the school of M. Graham, are described: broken vertical, inwardly turned chest and feet, sharpness and convulsiveness of movements, blows aimed at oneself, etc. The article consistently examines the possible causes of this trend, such as technical ease and accessibility, lower energy cost of ‘sad dances’, as well as the opportunity to demonstrate originality, nonconformism, express social protest, etc. There is an opinion that the expression of pathological motives, negative feelings, fears in art contributes to the liberation from their destructive effect in real life. This approach is questioned, because there is also a reverse mechanism: as a result of viewing relevant plots (for example, scenes of violence), infection with emotions occurs, role models arise, and the thresholds of what is permissible decrease. Along with criticism of a number of trends in contemporary art, the importance of the concept of ugliness for culture is emphasized. Meeting one’s own infirmity and imperfection, be that physical, psychological or moral, plays an essential role in the spiritual development of a person. However, modern art, including the dance performances considered, follow the path of establishing ugliness as a new norm and cultivate the perverted reality of the ‘sick’ creativity of a disintegrating personality. The expression of beauty, on the contrary, is characteristic of an integral personality striving for perfection and praising life.

Illuminating wisdom in schools: new insights from Iranian teachers’ perspectives

ABSTRACT In this study, Iranian teachers were selected and interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The purpose of conducting interviews was to discover the perceptions of gifted school teachers about strategies for improving wisdom among Iranian students. The participants believed that teachers themselves should be wisdom role models, wisdom role models should be introduced to students, authentic Iranian stories should be narrated, events should be shown to students from different perspectives, and students should be asked to research social problems and identify wise/unwise people. More research is needed in this field to assess the views of teachers in different environments and societies and then develop an educational approach to improving wisdom.

An ethics of care approach to promoting social wellbeing in Irish primary physical education

ABSTRACT This paper explores the integration of care-focused practices in physical education (PE) by an Irish primary school teacher to enhance children’s social wellbeing. Through a five-month autoethnographic self-study involving sixteen PE lessons, the research draws on qualitative data sources. The findings highlight the teacher’s dual role as educator and researcher, revealing how a commitment to care fostered collaboration and social engagement. The findings underscore the complexities and benefits of being a teacher role model, encouraging and listening to children’s voices, balancing child autonomy with teacher guidance, acting as a facilitator, and the potential of co-creating expectations. The study offers insights for educators on implementing care-oriented approaches in PE that prioritise relationship building and a socially enriching learning environment.

DIET AND EXERCISE HABITS OF NURSING ACADEMICS DURING THE PANDEMIC

This study aimed to examine the effects of social isolation during COVID-19 pandemic on dietary and exercise habits of nursing academics. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 393 nurse academics working in Turkey who agreed to participate in the study. During lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 10% of the participants received professional support for diet and exercise. The habits such as consumption of foods that strengthen the immune system and the time spent passively increased, whereas the habit of fast food consumption decreased. The nursing academics in this study showed a positive attitude toward diet and exercise because of their increasing age and the presence of chronic diseases; thus, high scores were observed on the diet and physical activity subscales of the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale (HLBS II) used in this study (p ˂ 0.05). Thus, it is very important for nurse academics to display healthy lifestyle behaviors during the course of the pandemic to be role models for increasing the awareness of the public about the appropriate diet and exercise

Gendered parenting and gender role attitude among children

In a society rife with gender stereotypes and discrimination, children frequently learn to accept gender roles that are not necessarily equitable to all genders. Many factors during childhood and adolescence impact children’s beliefs and actions about gender roles. These attitudes and behaviors are typically acquired and reinforced at home. Most research on gender socialization place greater emphasis on typical growth and average patterns across children. The present study investigated how gendered ideas and actions of parents influence their children’s attitudes about gender roles. The study examined gender stereotypes held by children about different concepts like occupation, appearance, play, and responsibilities, and how family contributed to their development. Data was collected from ten participants (of age between 4 and 6 years) from Kozhikode district, Kerala, India, using a semi-structured interview. The data was transcribed, and thematic analysis was performed. The study found that children had a solid gender-stereotyped viewpoint on all of the factors examined and that children make gender-stereotyped decisions, attitudes, and perceptions from a very young age. Role modeling and promoting distinct gendered behaviors are found to be the two ways through which parents and families impact children’s gender development. The present study has demonstrated that certain types of exposures from the family influence children’s learning of conventional gender roles. Society must establish a more gender-equitable context that will preserve the future psychological, social, and professional development of children.

Parental Involvement and Home Background as Determinants of Students' Interest in Islamic Studies in Oyo North, Oyo State, Nigeria

The study aimed to examine the relationship between parental involvement and students' moral decadence among 1,400 SSS 2 Islamic Studies students in 9 Local Government Areas in Oyo North. Inadequate parental involvement and poor home backgrounds have been reported as factors responsible for moral decadence among youths. The study examined parental involvement and home background as determinants of moral decadence among senior secondary school students in Oyo North of Oyo state. Specifically, the study seeks to: examine parental involvement as a determinant of moral decadence among students in Oyo North of Oyo State. Two research questions with corresponding hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. A descriptive research design of correlation was used. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data while the research hypotheses were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and Multiple Regression Analysis. The paper showed that there is a significant relationship between parental home background and students’ moral decadence (Chi. 127.55; p.<0.05). The study found that high parental involvement significantly reduces moral decadence among students in Oyo North, Oyo State. It also found that a good parental home background decreases this phenomenon. The study recommends parents improve their involvement in moral teaching, monitor their children's friends, communicate frequently, and serve as role models. It also suggests that parents should maintain a stable household and limit the number of children they can train properly to prevent moral decadence. This approach could help reduce or prevent moral decadence among students in Oyo North.

A longitudinal study of interprofessional education experiences among health professional graduates.

Effective teamwork and collaboration among health professionals is a well-recognized strategy toward enhancing patient outcomes. However, there is a lack of understanding on how to best prepare health professionals for collaborative practice. The aim of this research is to gain a better understanding of how graduates of five health professions (dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy) perceive and experience interprofessional education for collaborative practice (IPECP) throughout their health professions journey, with a focus on transition to practice. This longitudinal study employed an interpretive, narrative methodology to understand interprofessional identity development of 24 individuals who had recently graduated from a health professions program (dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy) at a Canadian university. Participant experiences were analyzed using narrative analysis. Participants' narratives provided insight into the context, factors and curricular experiences needed for interprofessional identity development and preparedness for collaborative practice. Participants identified the importance of socialization and connection with others, collaborative role models and exposure to collaborative experiences and settings for interprofessional practice. Participants expressed some dissatisfaction with their earliest IPECP experiences and most valued their exposure to 'real-life' practice examples and clinical scenarios. Participants desired more authentic experiences of interprofessional collaboration during their programs. Improving health professionals' interprofessional socialization and collaborative experiences within IPECP is critical to improving patient outcomes. Study findings can inform future curricula and IPECP strategies that create conditions to enhance collaborative practice and ensure the preparedness of a future health workforce with a strong collaborative identity.
