Influence of Solvent Polarity on Phytochemicals, Antioxidants, and Antimicrobial Properties of Delphinium denudatum: A Medicinal Herb from Sainj Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India

Plants with medicinal properties play an important role in pharmaceutical industries for their disease prevention and treatment applications. Delphinium denudatum, commonly known as jadwar, is an important medicinal plant of the Himalayan region. Therefore, in the present study, the effect of solvent polarity (using seven different solvents i.e., methanol, ethanol, acetone, chloroform, ethyl acetate, hexane, and water separately) was estimated for its secondary metabolites production, antioxidants, and antimicrobial activities. Among the seven different extracting solvents used, the methanol extract of leaf rendered the highest phenolic content (80.52 mg GAE/g (dry weight (dw)). Acetone extracts for the shoot were found to be most efficient with the extraction of the highest flavonoid content (57.53 mg QE/g (dw) while the methanol extract of root rendered the highest tannin content 18.78 mg TAE/g (dw). Likewise, the methanol extract of the leaf showed the highest flavonol content 34.76 mg QE/g (dw). For antioxidant activity, the IC50 value for ABTS activity ranged from 35.15 to 103.08 µg/mL, and for DPPH activity it was 75.23 to 256.21 µg/mL. Further, all the plant parts i.e., leaf, shoot, and root, showed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Serratia marcescens having MIC between 400 to 900 µg/mL. Among all the tested plant parts, polar solvent leaf extracts had higher antioxidant activity. Furthermore, phenols, flavonols, tannins, and ABTS activity from leaf, shoot, and root have shown a positive relation with solvent polarity. In all three plant parts; phenols, flavonols, and tannin positively correlate with antibacterial activity. The present study further revealed that the secondary metabolites in the leaf, shoot, and root extracts of D. denudatum are an excellent source of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, thus validating the species’ therapeutic potential.

Chromatographic Enantioseparation of Chiral Sulfoximines on Polysaccharide-Based Chiral Stationary Phases.

Chiral sulfoximines have significant roles in pharmaceutical industry and agricultural chemicals. Furthermore, chiral structurally related sulfoximines are used for their wide potential applications in some uncharted territory. However, chromatographic study on these compounds has not been systematically performed. Herein, this paper describes the enantioseparation of 12 chiral sulfoximines on polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs). Separation factors of chiral column, high-performance liquid chromatography parameters such as mobile phase composition and column temperature were carefully investigated. Chiralcel OJ-H column can resolve all of the 12 compounds, while Chiralpak AD-H column and Chiralpak AS-H column can separate eight and nine molecules, respectively. The sulfoximines are effectively resolved with Chiralcel OJ-H column with a mixture of n-hexane/2-propanol (80:20) as the mobile phase.

Recent Advances in Machine Learning-Based Models for Prediction of Antiviral Peptides.

Viruses have killed and infected millions of people across the world. It causes several chronic diseases like COVID-19, HIV, and hepatitis. To cope with such diseases and virus infections, antiviral peptides (AVPs) have been applied in the design of drugs. Keeping in view the significant role in pharmaceutical industry and other research fields, identification of AVPs is highly indispensable. In this connection, experimental and computational methods were proposed to identify AVPs. However, more accurate predictors for boosting AVPs identification are highly desirable. This work presents a thorough study and reports the available predictors of AVPs. We explained applied datasets, feature representation approaches, classification algorithms, and evaluation parameters of performance. In this study, the limitations of the existing studies and the best methods were emphasized. Provided the pros and cons of the applied classifiers. The future insights demonstrate efficient feature encoding approaches, best feature optimization schemes, and effective classification techniques that can improve the performance of novel method for accurate prediction of AVPs.

General overview of biopolymers: structure and properties

Abstract Biopolymers are synthesized from a biological origin under natural phenomenon especially during their growth cycle, in the form of polymeric substances that portrays excellent properties such as flexibility, tensile strength, steadiness, reusability, and so on. The amalgamated form of two or more biopolymers leads to the formation of “biocomposites” with novel applications. Several mechanisms were identified for the effective production of biopolymers from diverse life forms such as microbial origin plant and animal origin. Based on their origin, biopolymer differs in their structure and functions. Biopolymers are preferred over chemically synthesized polymers due to their biodegradability and their impact on the environment. Biopolymers play a pivotal role in pharmaceutical industries. The biopolymers could be employed for, the administration of medicine as well as regenerative medicine to reach minimal immunogenicity and maximum pharmacological expressivity in a treated individual. Based on their properties biopolymers were exclusively used in medical devices, cosmaceuticals, and confectionaries, it is also used as additives in food industries, bio-sensors, textile industries, and wastewater treatment plants. Ecological support is of utmost concern nowadays due to the ever-expanding ramification over the planet by usage of plastic as packaging material, turning up scientists and researchers to focus on biodegradable biopolymer utilization. The miscibility-structural-property relation between every biopolymer must be focused on to improve the better environment. Specific biopolymers are designed for the betterment of agrarian and commoners of society. Advanced structural modifications, properties of biopolymers, and applications of biopolymers to achieve a greener environment were discussed in this chapter.

The role of pharmaceutical industry in building resilient health system.

This study explores the interrelationship among the current sustainability agenda of the pharmaceutical industry, based on the United Nation sustainable development goals (SDGs), the elements of the Joint External Evaluation (JEE) tool, and the triad components of the One Health approach. A cross-walk exercise was conducted to identify commonalities among SDGs, JEE assessment tool, and One Health approach. An in-depth study of 10 global pharmaceutical firms' corporate sustainability reports and COVID-19 response plan for 2019-2020 was also conducted. The result of the exercise showed the existence of a direct and indirect relationship among the SDGs, elements of JEE assessment tool, and One Health approach. For example, both no poverty (SDG 1) and zero hunger (SDG 2) are linked with food safety targets under the JEE and with human and animal health under the One Health approach. This study adds a new dimension emphasizing the possibility of tailoring the pharmaceutical industry's activities under the sustainability agenda to strengthen global health security while remaining consistent with the One Health approach.

Chromatographic estimation of cefetamet pivoxil in bulk and tablet dosage form: Development and validation approach

Cefetamet pivoxil is an oral third generation cephalosporin class of antibiotic which is mainly used in the treatment and management of both upper and lower community acquired respiratory tract infection. Many branded and generic formulations are available in tablet dosage forms in market, hence the quality control of Cefetamet pivoxil play an important role in pharmaceutical industry. In the present research work an attempt has been made to develop and validate cost effective, simple, precise, robust and rugged chromatographic method for estimation of Cefetamet pivoxil in bulk and tablets. Chromatographic method was developed using HPLC instrument. The separation was based on isocratic reverse phase chromatographic mode using C-18 column as stationary phase and mobile phase composed of acetonitrile: water (80:20 v/v) at ambient temperature using UV detection at 251 nm. Developed method was validated by analyzing parameters such as specificity, selectivity, linearity, range, precision, robustness, ruggedness, detection limit, quantification limit and drug recovery. All the method validation reportwas found to be within the acceptance as per ICH guidelines. Linearity was found between the range of 10 – 50 mg/ml. The results obtained from the validation data showed that method was specific, selective, linear, precise, accurate, robust and rugged and hence can be used for estimation of Cefetamet pivoxil in bulk and tablets dosage forms.

More Pain, More Gain! The Delivery of COVID-19 Vaccines and the Pharmaceutical Industry's Role in Widening the Access Gap.

An effective response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic entails a comprehensive strategy that ensures equitable access to all COVID-19-fighting technologies. To achieve this goal, the international community has acknowledged immunization as a public good. However, a trend of grossly unequal dose distribution emerged, owing, among other factors, to pharmaceutical companies' profit-driven actions, jeopardizing the mechanisms built to increase vaccine access. The contradiction between public health interests and corporate discretion in determining vaccine dose distribution poses critical concerns about the health risks associated with lengthening the duration of the pandemic and the eventual liability of companies for violations of human rights. To evaluate the risks posed to the COVID-19 immunization program, data on vaccine allocation and delivery, vaccine dose application, immunized populations, and the volume of Advanced Purchase Agreements (APAs) between countries and pharmaceutical companies were compiled and assessed. A descriptive analysis was then conducted to analyze the role of pharmaceutical companies in providing equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. When the data is broken down by income (as of June 2021), it shows that high-income countries (HICs) have already crossed the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) 20% immunization threshold. However, countries of all other income levels have yet to achieve this mark for fully vaccinated people. Upper-middle-income countries (UMICs) have approximately 3%, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have approximately 2% and low-income countries (LICs) have less than 0.1% of fully vaccinated people per hundred. The supply shortage is expected to last until the second half of 2021. As a result of the COVAX failure, a health gap emerged with countries living in a pre-immunization period for an extended time. The existing conflict between the international response to tackle COVID-19 and corporate profit-driven behavior contributed to prolonging pandemic, especially in Africa. Accordingly, there is a need to approve an international treaty that targets the activities of all actors, including the pharmaceutical companies, in protecting human rights and the right to health realms.

Investigation of Thermodynamic Equilibria of Vitamin C in Various Solvents Via Experimental Determination and Model Correlation

Vitamin C plays an essential role in pharmaceutical industry. In general, the solubility of this vitamin in different environments is an important factor for drug development processes. Indeed, solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE) determination of the interested compound in various solvents needs high-precision determination which, however, frequently consumes a lot of time and labor work. In this study, we have developed a simple approach that allows detecting quickly solubility and other important thermodynamic data of dissolution processes. In fact, this approach bases on a combination of the polythermal SLE experimental-determination and the modified Apelblat model. Besides water as a single solvent, different alcohols will be used in this work. For all studied media, dissolution processes are found as endothemic with positive values of enthalpy of dissolution. Furthermore, different alkyl groups have shown influence on the solubility of this compound. Indeed, vitamin C tends to dissolve in water stronger than in ethanol and 2-propanol that relates to polarity properties and hydrogen bonding formation. The results in this contribution gain a good agreement comparing to the reported values from the literature.

Role of pharmaceutical industry in killing humanity & fostering social disorganization

Westernization has deeply affected the Indian society by discarding morality, values and ethics. In a traditional Indian Society almost all human actions, behavior and even relationships were well defined and kept under limitations. Restricted and legalized way of sexual relation, that too after solemnization of legal marriage, was in practice. Since the relationship was legal, birth of children used to be a celebration and no place was for abortion or for termination of pregnancy. Modern India is totally different. Now sexual relations without marriage is a fashion and unwanted pregnancy is not a big issue. The credit goes to pharmacy sector which has invented and produced a series of contraceptives like caps, condoms, combined pills, implant, injections etc. These are the primary level of protections and if fails, secondary level is also there. Now a person without any prescription can purchase a pregnancy test kit from a medical store and test pregnancy easily. If the result is positive, pharmacy again assists by providing abortion pills etc. which works from the first day of pregnancy to 20 weeks.

Ethno pharmacology and Qualitative Phytochemical analysis of some Medicinal plants of Niyamagiri hill, Kalahandi, Odisha

The traditional knowledge of making drugs from medicinal plants have a major role in pharmaceutical industries. The objective of the present work is to find out how tribal peoples make use of plants as their medicine to prevent numerous diseases without having any modern medical science mastery. The structure of the research was based on four parts: 1. Ethnobotanical survey study.2.plants use value.3. Phytochemical screening.4. Ethnomedicinal uses. The research work developed in tribal community of Niyamagiri hills, Kalahandi district of Odisha, India. The duration of the research was one year. The collection of medicinal plants were done from tribal peoples of Niyamagiri hill region of Kalahandi district of Odisha. plant extraction was performed in the lab, followed by Phytochemical screening. The results reflects the rich diversity of medicinal plants of Niyamagiri hill with 50 plants species are used as herbal therapy for the healing of various ailments. Among them, 13 plants were trees, 12 plants were shrubs, and 25 plants were herbs. These were enumerated with their medicinal value. Out of the 50 plant species studied 43 were dicot and 7 were monocot. The study identified 50 medicinal plants belonging to 35 families used against 27 diseases categories such as, skin diseases, gastro intestinal disease, wound healing etc. treating various kinds of ailments between different ethnic communities in Niyamagiri hill. The plants use value Show that the most frequently used plant species was B. laciniosa, Z.oenoplia, T. bracteata giving the highest use value of 1.33. B. laciniosa is recognized to its use in the treatment of different ailments and it is well renowned by all informants as the plant having the maximum medicinal value. The extracts phytochemical screening revealed the presence of Alkaloid, Flavonoids, phenols, Tannins, Saponins Terpenoids in all plants approximately .G.sylvestre contain all of these secondary metabolites except Saponins.

Personnel hygiene is very important in the pharmaceutical industry to prevent or reduce any kind of contamination which can affect the quality of medicinal products. When it comes to delivering highest quality standards of pharmaceutical products, key hygiene factors must to be upheld. Good personnel hygiene policies and practices are the foundation for successful product safety and purity. They are the backbone of a meaningful Good manufacturing Practices (GMP). Proper personnel training and sanitation are of prime importance. Personnel engaged in the manufacture, processing, packing, or holding of a drug product shall wear clean clothing appropriate for the duties they perform. All personnel should undergo medical check-up which may be a prerequisite for safe working condition. Personnel hygiene policies and procedures are to be followed by all personnel including management, visitors, production, sanitation and maintenance staff, for reducing the chance of product contamination. Personnel hygiene practices and procedures play a vital role in pharmaceutical industry in order to achieve a good quality and safe product.

Corn (Zea mays) as a Nutrient Source and Diet: A Review

Maize is also known as corn; it is a cereal. It is a member of Poaceae family which is a grass family. Maize originated 55 to 70 million year ago in central America. By seeing phylogenetic tree of grass species related to maize, it can be conclude that there is no direct ancestor of maize. The closest ancestor of maize are teosintes. Maize contains many phytochemical-like phystosterols, carotenoids and many other phenolic compounds. A PHYTOPHARMACOLOGICAL REVIEW ON PHASEOLUS VULGARIS

Natural medicine plays a significant role in pharmaceutical industry. Phaseolus vulgaris L is a naturally available plant which is very frequently used in our daily life. Phaseolus vulgaris L is commonly known as bean; is an annual leguminous plant, belonging to family Fabaceae. Phaseolus vulgaris L is highly nutritious, easily and cheaply available. It is indigenous to central and South America. Phaseolus vulgaris L has wide number of uses due to its high content of phytochemical constituents. Flavonoids are responsible for its wide range of uses like antioxidant and neuroprotection. Phaseolus vulgaris L is most commonly taken by mouth for weight loss and obesity. It is also commonly taken for treatment of diabetes. The seed is diuretic, hypotensive and also used in the treatment of cancer of the blood. The present review reveals nutritional values, geographical conditions, propagation, collection and cultivation, phytochemical constituents and pharmacological activities of Phaseolus vulgaris L.

The discovery of insulin revisited: lessons for the modern era.

2021 to 2022 marks the one hundredth anniversary of ground-breaking research in Toronto that changed the course of what was, then, a universally fatal disease: type 1 diabetes. Some would argue that insulin's discovery by Banting, Best, Macleod, and Collip was the greatest scientific advance of the 20th century, being one of the first instances in which modern medical science was able to provide lifesaving therapy. As with all scientific discoveries, the work in Toronto built upon important advances of many researchers over the preceding decades. Furthermore, the Toronto work ushered in a century of discovery of the purification, isolation, structural characterization, and genetic sequencing of insulin, all of which influenced ongoing improvements in therapeutic insulin formulations. Here we discuss the body of knowledge prior to 1921 localizing insulin to the pancreas and establishing insulin's role in glucoregulation, and provide our views as to why researchers in Toronto ultimately achieved the purification of pancreatic extracts as a therapy. We discuss the pharmaceutical industry's role in the early days of insulin production and distribution and provide insights into why the discoverers chose not to profit financially from the discovery. This fascinating story of bench-to-beside discovery provides useful considerations for scientists now and in the future.

Application of phase change materials in 4D printing: A review

Evolution in additive manufacturing is rapid nowadays and it has discovered 4th dimension in myriad of engineering applications. 3D printing technology has gained attention in recent years when Skylar Tibbits has introduced 4th dimension i.e. time in it. Phase change materials can transform its shape, size or properties as a response to external stimuli like change in temperatures, PH values, UV radiation, electric field, etc. 3D Printing with the help of phase change materials creates better opportunities within the conditions where human access is sort of impossible. The recent progresses of 4D printing with the help of phase change materials is presented in this review. Various applications of 4D printing technology are covered which has the major role in pharmaceutical industry, biomedicine industry, and soft robotics. This review will provide useful insight for future progresses on applications of phase change materials in 4D printing.

GROUP DYNAMIC IMPACT ON QUALITY OF THE PROJECTS IN PHARMACUTICAL INDISTRY

Group dynamic and project management are both considered as a part of the business excellence, these techniques have already been implemented successfully in several areas of manufacturing business in the last decades. In particular, they have been implemented in service entities as well as manufacturing companies due to their improvement on costs reduction, delivery on time and quality service. Pharmaceutical Industry role as a pharmaceutical embedded in a corporation that manufactures building materials, places it in a position to draw on optimization techniques from arenas of industry, it has become noticeable recently, that the team creating with increasing leadership skills and techniques by save the time and good communication skills simultaneously, a big variation on the analysis time which is not complying with the best practices from the equivalent pharmaceutical industries. This thesis discusses the successful tools and practices as well as the challenges with implementation of group dynamic integrated with project management techniques by following the project management and group dynamic methodology; using the appropriate tools in each phase, the progress of the project was accelerated to meet the proposed goals and objectives in a practical manner. The theoretical background is achieved through exploring the literature of group dynamic, team building and project management. The development will be done in collaboration with the related stakeholders, by following the group dynamic improvement process and by analyzing the process survey data from the target company. The project resumed by using appropriate systemic tool to build and implement any project and proves the processes improvement and the potential net profit. Thus, Group dynamic methodology was found to be an effective problem solving approach if used parallel with project management methodology and the systematic use of the proposed integrated approach can ensure savings in terms of time and money.

Concept of process capability indices as a tool for process performance measures and its pharmaceutical application

The main objective of the present study is to present the concept of process capability and to focus its significance in pharmaceutical industries. From a practical view point, the control charts (such as X and R hart) sometimes are not convenient summary statistics when hundreds of characteristics in a plant or supply base are considered. In many situations, capability indices can be used to relate the process parameters. The resulting indices are unit less and provide a common, easily understood language for quantifying the performance of a process. Process capability indices (PCIs) are powerful means of studying the process ability for manufacturing a product that meets specifications. Several capability indices including Cp, Cpu, Cpl and Cpk have been widely used in manufacturing industry to provide common quantitative measures on process potential and performance. The formulas for these indices are easily understood and can be directly implemented. A process capability analysis compares the distribution of output from an in-control process to its specifications limits to determine the consistency with which the specifications can be met. The process capability is also having a significant role in pharmaceutical industry. Process capability indices can be a powerful tool by which to ensure drug product quality and process robustness. Determining process capability provides far more insight into any pharmaceutical process performance than simply computing the percentage of batches that pass or fail each year.

A Drug Decision Support System for Developing a Successful Drug Candidate Using Machine Learning Techniques.

Virtual screening of candidate drug molecules using machine learning techniques plays a key role in pharmaceutical industry to design and discovery of new drugs. Computational classification methods can determine drug types according to the disease groups and distinguish approved drugs from withdrawn ones. Classification models developed in this study can be used as a simple filter in drug modelling to eliminate potentially inappropriate molecules in the early stages. In this work, we developed a Drug Decision Support System (DDSS) to classify each drug candidate molecule as potentially drug or non-drug and to predict its disease group. Molecular descriptors were identified for the determination of a number of rules in drug molecules. They were derived using ADRIANA.Code program and Lipinski's rule of five. We used Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to classify drug molecules correctly according to the types of diseases. Closed frequent molecular structures in the form of subgraph fragments were also obtained with Gaston algorithm included in ParMol Package to find common molecular fragments for withdrawn drugs. We observed that TPSA, XlogP Natoms, HDon_O and TPSA are the most distinctive features in the pool of the molecular descriptors and evaluated the performances of classifiers on all datasets and found that classification accuracies are very high on all the datasets. Neural network models achieved 84.6% and 83.3% accuracies on test sets including cardiac therapy, anti-epileptics and anti-parkinson drugs with approved and withdrawn drugs for drug classification problems. The experimental evaluation shows that the system is promising at determination of potential drug molecules to classify drug molecules correctly according to the types of diseases.

Silver nanoparticles: various methods of synthesis, size affecting factors and their potential applications–a review

Currently, synthesis of nanoparticles from several noble metals like palladium, tin, copper, silver and gold etc. has received more attention because of their unique properties as well as their application in different fields. Furthermore, silver nanoparticles play an important role in pharmaceutical industries because they function like antibacterial agents which carry less toxic effects. In case of industrial applications, silver particles (inkjet inks) having regular dispersions are helpful in making different electronic circuits. Over the period, various synthetic methods for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles were reported i.e. physical, chemical, and photochemical. However, most of the available techniques are expensive and not eco-friendly i.e. environmentally harmful. There are various factors such as the methods of synthesis, temperature, dispersing agent, surfactant etc. which greatly influence the quality and quantity of the synthesized nanoparticles and ultimately affect their properties. It is also pertinent to mention here that the main target for these silver nanoparticles was not only to synthesize in nano range, but also require easy, eco-friendly and economical synthesis of the nanoparticles. Therefore, this review mainly goes through the several methods of synthesis of nanoparticles which should be based on the green approach, and easy to be synthesized at low cost. In addition, we also discussed some approaches to fabricate silver-based nanoparticles, their enhanced properties and their different type of applications such as electrical conductivity, antibacterial, optical, photocatalytic properties.

Pharmacoinformatics: Development through History and Its Role in Pharmaceutical Industry

Medicine has displayed miraculous developments during the past century or so. Credit goes to the emergence of scientific research methods. Research on the disease, its causes, effects, precaution, and especially cure has revolutionized the world. Man has been liberated from epidemics and other deadly diseases. All this would not have been possible, had there not been research and development in medication simultaneously. The pharmaceutical industry is an integral part of the medical field. A real boost was given to all kinds of research with the invention of the computer. Data saving, processing, and analysis were never easier. This paper aims at highlighting the great role and importance of Pharmacoinformatics in drug discovery. It also elucidates how drug discovery is done. A portion of it also targets how this science has evolved over time. The particular purpose is to trace the transformations that came with the introduction of Information Technology in this field.
