How has your background in nursing led you to have an interest in working with adolescents who have an addicted parent?: I have been a pediatric nurse for 23 years and a nurse practitioner for 18 years. Over these years, I have worked with adolescents with an addicted parent in all settings. Because of what I have seen with these teenagers, I became interested in this issue and decided to focus my doctoral work in this area. The literature suggests that Children of Alcoholics/Addicts (CoAs) are a high-risk group for physical, mental, social, and school problems. Certain physical problems such as asthma, hypertension, abdominal pain, headaches, tics, and gastrointestinal disorders occur more often in Co As. These children are also at risk for emotional disorders, including low self-esteem, depression, suicidal thoughts/behaviors, eating disorders, and substance abuse/dependence.
