Is pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) a good plant species for ecotoxicological tests?

Various plant species can be selected for environmental testing, including pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br), a globally significant cereal crop. This study aims to assess millet's suitability as a species for ecotoxicological tests, examining (1) germination and initial development dynamics, (2) the minimum seed quantity for reliable sampling, (3) optimal experimental design with replication numbers, (4) suitability of positive control, and (5) the effectiveness of the protocol in evaluating toxic effects of environmental pollutants. Millet exhibited rapid and uniform germination as well as consistent initial seedling development. To establish the minimum number of seeds required for reliable experimentation, germination, and seedling growth were compared across plots containing 10, 25, and 50 seeds. Consequently, 10 seeds per plot were chosen for subsequent experiments to reduce labor and costs while maintaining reliability. To validate the selected experimental design, and to establish a positive control for assays, aluminum was used as a toxic element at concentrations ranging from 10-2 to 10-6 M. While aluminum did not affect the final percentage of germinated seeds, it did exhibit an impact on the Germination Speed Index (GSI). Significant differences in root and aerial growth, and with fresh weight, were observed. The 10-3M concentration was chosen as the positive control as the 10-2 concentration showed extreme toxicity. To assess the applicability of the established protocol in determining the toxic effects of environmental pollutants, millet roots were exposed to the toxic agents atrazine, cadmium, methyl methane sulfonate (MMS), and Spent pot liner (SPL). Millet demonstrated sensitivity and efficiency in response to these tests. In conclusion, millet proves to be an effective species for the toxicological risk assessment of environmental pollutants.

Specific CpG sites methylation is associated with hematotoxicity in low-dose benzene-exposed workers

Benzene is a broadly used industrial chemicals which causes various hematologic abnormalities in human. Altered DNA methylation has been proposed as epigenetic biomarkers in health risk evaluation of benzene exposure, yet the role of methylation at specific CpG sites in predicting hematological effects remains unclear. In this study, we recruited 120 low-level benzene-exposed and 101 control male workers from a petrochemical factory in Maoming City, Guangdong Province, China. Urinary S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA) in benzene-exposed workers was 3.40-fold higher than that in control workers (P < 0.001). Benzene-induced hematotoxicity was characterized by reduced white blood cells counts and nuclear division index (NDI), along with an increased DNA damage and urinary 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (all P < 0.05). Methylation levels of TRIM36, MGMT and RASSF1a genes in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLCs) were quantified by pyrosequencing. CpG site 6 of TRIM36, CpG site 2, 4, 6 of RASSF1a and CpG site 1, 3 of MGMT methylation were recognized as hot CpG sites due to a strong correlation with both internal exposure and hematological effects. Notably, integrating hot CpG sites methylation of multiple genes reveal a higher efficiency in prediction of integrative damage compared to individual genes at hot CpG sites. The negative dose–response relationship between the combined methylation of hot CpG sites in three genes and integrative damage enabled the classification of benzene-exposed individuals into high-risk or low-risk groups using the median cut-off value of the integrative index. Subsequently, a prediction model for integrative damage in benzene-exposed populations was built based on the methylation status of the identified hot CpG sites in the three genes. Taken together, these findings provide a novel insight into application prospect of specific CpG site methylation as epi-biomarkers for health risk assessment of environmental pollutants.

A critical review of biomarkers in toxicology and risk assessment of environmental pollutants

Over the last 30 years, the study of biomarkers has experienced significant growth. Biomarkers serve as essential tools in monitoring toxicology and risk assessment of environmental pollutants by providing early and specific endpoints. This expansion in the field has enabled researchers to better understand the impact of various environmental pollutants on living organisms and ecosystems. By utilizing biomarkers, scientists can assess the potential risks posed by these pollutants and develop effective strategies for environmental protection and preservation. This article briefly reviews some of the aspects in an attempt to give an overall view of the field. Some of the new developments, particularly in relation to biomarkers of exposure and response, are mentioned.

Household unclean fuel use, indoor pollution and self-rated health: risk assessment of environmental pollution caused by energy poverty from a public health perspective.

The lack of access to clean energy remains one of the major challenges in the global energy sector. Access to clean, sustainable and affordable energy, outlined in the seventh Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7) of the United Nations, plays a crucial role in advancing health (SDG 3), as unclean cooking energy may endanger people's health by causing air pollution. However, due to endogeneity problems such as reverse causality, the health consequences of environmental pollution caused by unclean fuel usage are difficult to be scientifically and accurately evaluated. This paper aims to systematically assess the health cost of unclean fuel usage based on tackling endogeneity, using the data from Chinese General Social Survey. The ordinary least squares model, ordered regression methods, instrumental variable approach, penalized machine learning methods, placebo test, and mediation models are applied in this research. Analytical results demonstrate that households' unclean fuel use significantly damages people's health. Specifically, the use of dirty fuel leads to an average of about a one-standard-deviation decline in self-rated health, demonstrating its notable negative effect. The findings are robust to a series of robustness and endogeneity tests. The impact mechanism is that unclean fuel usage reduces people's self-rated health through increasing indoor pollution. Meanwhile, the negative effect of dirty fuel use on health has significant heterogeneity among different subgroups. The consequences are more prominent for the vulnerable groups who are female, younger, living in rural areas and older buildings, with lower socio-economic status and uncovered by social security. Therefore, necessary measures should be taken to improve energy infrastructure to make clean cooking energy more affordable and accessible as well as to enhance people's health. Besides, more attention should be paid to the energy needs of the above specific vulnerable groups faced with energy poverty.

Using δFIP as a potential biomarker for risk assessment of environmental pollutants in aquatic ecosystem: A case study of marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC7002

Increased hazardous substances application causes more environmental pollution and risks for human health. Microalgae are the important biological groups in marine ecosystem, and considered to be sensitive to environmental pollutants. Therefore, toxicity test on marine microalgae could provide the most efficient method for aquatic toxicity assessment, and could also be used as the early warning signals in aquatic ecosystem. In view of this, our study aimed at investigating the toxicity potential of two typical organic compounds, and screening out novel photosynthetic indicators for the risk assessment of environmental pollutants. In this study, benzyl alcohol and 2-phenylethanol were chosen as the target organic compounds, and preliminary toxicity mechanism of these organic compounds on marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC7002 was investigated with chlorophyll fluorescence technology. Results showed that PCC7002 could be affected by benzyl alcohol or 2-phenylethanol stress, and the toxicity effect was concentration-dependent. And external benzyl alcohol and 2-phenylethanol stress damaged the oxygen evolving complex, and suppressed electron transport at the donor and receptor sides of photosystem II (PSII), influencing the absorption, transfer, and application of light energy. Furthermore, potential biomarkers were screened by half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) on the basis of pearson correlation coefficient analysis, and fluorescence intensity difference between the I-step and P-step of OJIP curve (δFIP) seems to be the most sensitive indicator for external stress. This study would be of significant interest to the biomarker community, and pave the way for the practical resource for marine pollution monitoring and assessment.

Pollution assessment of antimony in shooting range soils

Soil samples collected from the berm at Thebephatshwa (TAB) shooting range found in Botswana showed variable total concentrations of antimony in the range 38±1 to 283±12 mg/kg. Total antimony concentrations found in the soils were higher than the set regulatory levels by the World Health Organization (36 mg/kg) and the United States Protection Agency (31 mg/kg). The upper berm showed elevated levels of antimony (283±12 mg/kg) due, in part, to the highest density of spent projectiles found in this part of the berm. Sequential extraction studies established that antimony was partitioned mostly in the organic and residual fractions of the soil. Environmental pollution risk assessment based on geoaccumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF) and enrichment factor (EF) indicated all four sections of the berm posed high risk to the environment. The upper berm exhibited extreme pollution from antimony (Igeo ~9), very high contamination (CF ~744) and extreme antimony enrichment (EF ~506) compared to the other three sections studied. Elevated levels of antimony at TAB shooting range call for best shooting range management practices, soil remediation and reclamation methods to be carried out at this shooting range to minimize the mobility and bioavailability of antimony.

Regional metal pollution risk assessment based on a big data framework: A case study of the eastern Tianshan mining area, China

With the increasing maturity of big data technology, its application in the field of environmental assessment has become an important issue. The mining of mineral resource can affect the balance in the ecological environment surrounding mining areas and the normal life activities of humans through groundwater. To solve this problem, big data-based methods were used to evaluate the pollution risk in mining areas in this article. Based on a spatial big data management framework, in this paper, high-risk areas in eastern Tianshan were quantitatively analyzed and delineated via a new comprehensive heavy metal pollution assessment system. A distributed storage environment, unstructured management method and spatial index coding were used to uniformly manage spatial data in vector and raster formats retrieved from different sources. A system involving 18 geological environment indicators was used to evaluate the risk level in the study area and in delineated areas with a high risk of heavy metal pollution. The results indicated that the proposed framework could efficiently store and process spatial data and realize environmental pollution risk assessment in a big data environment. In addition, some of the high-pollution risk areas identified based on the assessment results were consistent with actual mine locations. Overall, the results show that integrating multi-source geological characteristics through a comprehensive evaluation system based on big data can have a positive effect on improving the accuracy of heavy metal pollution risk assessment. Heavy metal pollution assessment can provide a reference for environmental monitoring and governance of the eastern Tianshan region and offer new solutions to large-scale heavy metal pollution assessment.

Spatially revealed perfluorooctane sulfonate-induced nephrotoxicity in mouse kidney using atmospheric pressure MALDI mass spectrometry imaging

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), an emerging environmental persistent pollutant, has attracted extensive attention due to its potential nephrotoxicity. However, little is known about the spatial variations of lipid metabolism associated with PFOS exposure. In this study, atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (AP-MALDI MSI) was used to reveal the spatial distributions of PFOS and its adverse effect on lipid metabolism directly in mouse kidney sections. We have observed that PFOS accumulated in the renal pelvis and outer cortex regions, with some found in the medulla and inner cortex regions. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining results also demonstrated that the accumulation of PFOS caused damage to the mouse kidney, which was consistent with AP-MALDI MSI results. Furthermore, a total of 42 lipids were shown to be significantly different in the spatial distribution patterns and variations between control and PFOS exposure mice groups, including the significant down-regulation of lyso-glycerophospholipids (Lyso-GPs), phosphatidic acids (PA), phosphatidylcholines (PC), phosphatidylethanolamines (PE), phosphatidylserines (PS) sphingomyelins (SM) and sulfatides (ST) in renal medulla or cortex region of mouse kidney sections, and remarkable up-regulation of cholesterol and phosphatidylinositols (PI) in the cortex regions of mouse kidney sections. The AP-MALDI MSI provides a new tool to explore spatial distributions and variations of the endogenous metabolites for the risk assessment of environmental pollutants.

Effects of microplastics on the accumulation and neurotoxicity of methylmercury in zebrafish larvae

Microplastics (MPs) and methylmercury (MeHg) have attracted increasing attention due to ubiquitous occurrence and toxicity. This study aimed to investigate whether MPs could absorb MeHg and thus modify its bioconcentration and neurotoxicity in the zebrafish larvae (Danio rerio). The pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.989) was found to be suitable for describing the adsorption kinetics of MeHg onto MPs. Compared with Freundlich and Temkin models, the Langmuir isotherm model provided a better fit with the experimental data exhibiting a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 54.945 mg/g. These results suggested that adsorption occurs mainly by a chemical process dominated by monolayer adsorption. MPs adsorbed MeHg to form MPs/MeHg complex, which was ingested by zebrafish larvae, and promoted accumulation of MeHg. Thus, the presence of MPs aggravated the reduction of locomotor activity induced by MeHg, and downregulation of neurotransmitters related genes, such as ache, gfap and scl1A3b. Metabolome analysis also revealed disrupted glutathione (GSH) metabolism upon exposure of MeHg alone and in combination with MPs, as reflected by the increased in the ratio of GSH and oxidized glutathione. These effects were also confirmed by upregulation of oxidative stress-related genes, such as sod, sod mt and gpx4a. Collectively, these results indicated that MPs could act as a carrier of MeHg and enhance its accumulation in zebrafish, thereby disrupting locomotor activity by excessive oxidative stress. This study provides a scientific basis for improving health risk assessment of environmental pollutants, particularly those potentially able to adsorb to MPs by virtue of their chemical nature.

Actinide imaging in environmental hot particles from Chernobyl by rapid spatially resolved resonant laser secondary neutral mass spectrometry

Radioactive particles, so-called hot particles, are of great importance in the risk assessment of environmental pollution and human health hazards. Since most of these particles are only a couple of micrometers in size and thus have correspondingly small atomic inventory, information on origin and composition is difficult to obtain. Many analytical methods do not give insight into isotopic details or require the complete use up of the particle. Resonant laser secondary neutral mass spectrometry (rl-SNMS) has been proven to be a well-suited method for quasi-non-destructive analysis of trace elements. The technique provides high suppression of isobaric interferences and high spatial resolution without necessitating extensive chemical preparation. To measure multiple elements, it is often necessary to switch between laser excitation schemes, requiring elaborate adaptation of the laser setup. Here we present a novel rL-SNMS system capable of multi-element measurements in short succession without any manual adjustment to the laser system. For demonstration, ten micrometer sized hot particles from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone are analyzed and the obtained isotopic ratios of uranium, plutonium and americium are discussed.

Bioaccumulation of BDE47 in testes by TiO2 nanoparticles aggravates the reproductive impairment of male zebrafish by disrupting intercellular junctions

This study attempts to explore the potential impact of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (n-TiO2) on bioconcentration and reproductive impairments of male zebrafish in the presence of 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47), the congener of PBDEs predominant in environment and most abundant in biosamples. n-TiO2 nanoparticles strongly adsorbed BDE47 to form BDE47/TiO2 complex, which was taken up into the testes of zebrafish, and increased the tissue burdens of both BDE47 and n-TiO2. Correspondingly, no observed toxic dose of n-TiO2 (100 μg/L) was found to aggravate the abnormal histological morphology of the testes and the decrease in egg production, gonadosomatic index, sexual hormone levels and related gene expression in zebrafish in the presence of BDE47 at 5 or 50 μg/L. In addition, n-TiO2 exacerbated the destruction resulting from the ultrastructural disassembly of intercellular connectivity of germ cells in zebrafish and the decrease in transepithelial electrical resistance in TM4 cells induced by BDE47. Furthermore, n-TiO2 enhanced BDE47 to initially activate p-JNK MAPK signaling pathway and subsequently triggered the downregulation of junction proteins (i.e., ZO-1, Connexin-43 and N-cadherin), leading to impaired cell-cell junctions in vivo and in vitro. Our results demonstrated that n-TiO2 should act as a carrier to facilitate the accumulation of BDE47 in zebrafish testes and result in a synergistic effect on BDE47-induced adverse reproductive outcomes via disruption of intercellular connectivity of zebrafish testes. This study is beneficial in providing a scientific basis for improving the health risk assessment of environmental pollutants, particularly those that coexist with nanoparticle contamination in realistic environments.

Physicochemical Characteristics and Heavy Metals Contamination Assessment in Water and Sediment in a Tropical Hydroelectric Dam of Sassandra River, Côte d’Ivoire

Buyo hydroelectric dam is one of the highest concrete rock-filled dams in Côte d’Ivoire. This paper presents results of physicochemical parameters in water supply, heavy metals concentrations, and ecological risks in sediment from Buyo hydroelectric dam. In-situ measurement of physicochemical parameters of water and sediment samples were collected in 3 stations along the reservoir from April 2018 to March 2019. The sediment samples have been acidic digested and metal concentrations were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer and mercury analyzer. Results indicated that conductivity, oxygen content, temperature, nitrite, and chloride were within the limits established by WHO for potable water, while pH was acidic. The Pearson correlation indicated a strong positive correlation and significant linear relation between various pairs physicochemical parameters. In comparison with upper continental crust concentrations, all heavy metals in sediments showed high concentrations in the upstream than the downstream and pristine stations, with exception of Cu. The geo-accumulation (Igeo) and enrichment factor (EF) indices used indicate that sediments were classified as uncontaminated according to Zn and Mn concentrations and they have a lithogenic source. Whereas, Igeo and EF values of Hg and Cu showed that the sediments lie in the range of moderate to heavily contaminated, suggesting anthropogenic inputs on these metal levels. Except for Hg, which had high ecological risks, Cu, Zn, and Mn pose a low ecological risk. This study provides an insight into water qualities and risk assessment of environmental pollution and important outputs for decision-makers to set policy for resources management.

Environmental Impact Assessment Related by Energy Sector in Rovinari Mining Area

Abstract In this article an impact assessment is carried out, generated by activities in the energy sector related to Rovinari mining area. Energy-related activities in this area are carried out by open pit mining activities in the context of Tismana, Roșia, Pinoasa, Peşteana and Rovinari locations and Rovinari thermal power plant. Some information that has formed the input for the author’s approach has been provided by SC. Complexul Energetic Oltenia SA (CEO) and S.C. Institute of Scientific Research, Technological Engineering and Mine Designs on Lignite S.A. Craiova (ICSITPML) which has been processed, analysed and used for the presented environmental impact assessment. Two methods from specialized studies have been used for the impact assessment, namely: the Matrix Method for Rapid Impact Assessment (MERI) and the Method for Integrated Quantitative Impact and Risk Assessment of Environmental Pollution (EIRM). Based on the analysis carried out, it can be concluded that the activity in this sector does not lead to significant negative effects strictly associated with it.

Pollution and Ecological Risk Assessment of Potentially Toxic Elements in Natural Waters from the Ameka Metallogenic District in Southeastern Nigeria

In mining areas, several potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are often released in excess quantities into the ecosystem; thereby, predisposing both human beings and the environment to pollution risks. The current paper investigated the pollution status and ecological risks of PTEs in groundwater resources from Ameka and its environs, southeast Nigeria, using several numerical and chemometric models. Both hand-dug wells and borehole samples were analyzed. The order of abundance of the PTEs in the waters was Co > Se > Cd > Ni > Mn > Fe > Zn > As > Pb > Cu, for both hand-dug wells and borehole samples. Environmental pollution risk assessment models such as the contamination factor, contamination degree, pollution index, pollution load index, Nemerow integrated pollution index, and modified heavy metal pollution index showed that 100% of the samples were highly laden with PTEs. Similarly, the ecological risk assessment showed that 100% of the samples pose very high ecological risks. Furthermore, the water quality index and integrated water quality index jointly revealed that all the analyzed groundwater sources in this mining area were unsuitable for human consumption. Chemometric tools such as factor analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis were used to establish the inter-parameter relationships. It was realized that both geogenic and anthropogenic factors are responsible for the enrichment of the PTEs in the natural waters. Therefore, based on the overall findings of this study, adequate treatment of the polluted waters before drinking is highly recommended.

Impact of effluent-derived heavy metals on the groundwater quality in Ajao industrial area, Nigeria: an assessment using entropy water quality index (EWQI)

Several numerical models have been utilized in water quality assessments for various purposes. Among all the commonly used models, entropy-weighted water quality index (EWQI) has been recognized as the most unbiased model for assessing drinking water quality. Therefore, this paper presents a case study of the application of EWQI in assessing the effect of effluent-derived heavy metals on the groundwater quality in Ajao industrial estate, Nigeria. Three environmental pollution risk assessment tools were integrated to better evaluate the level of heavy metals contamination in the groundwater. Geoaccumulation index (Igeo) placed 66% of the samples in uncontaminated to moderately contaminated category. However, 19% showed moderate to heavy contamination, whereas 14.29% were heavily contaminated. Similarly, enrichment factor (EF) revealed that 52% of the samples have minimal enrichment, 33% are moderately enriched, while 14.29% were extremely enriched with heavy metals. Vector modulus of pollution index (PIvector) showed that the majority of the samples (80.9%) have low pollution, 4.76% recorded moderate pollution, while 14.29% had considerable to very high pollution. The EWQI showed that the majority (85.71%) of the groundwater samples are excellent drinking water, while 14.29% are unsuitable for drinking. However, a dendrogram integrating the results of the Igeo, EF, PIvector, and EWQI was produced by hierarchical cluster analysis to harmonize and demarcate the groundwater quality in this industrial area. Although this study confirms the suitability of most samples for drinking, more awareness programs towards the protection of the groundwater should be embraced.

A novel computational solution to the health risk assessment of air pollution via joint toxicity prediction: A case study on selected PAH binary mixtures in particulate matters

Regional haze episode has already caused overwhelming public concern. Unraveling the health effects of the representative composition mixtures of atmospheric fine particulate matters (PM2.5) becomes a top priority. In this study, a novel computational solution integrating chemical-induced genomic residual effect prediction with in vitro-based risk assessment is proposed to obtain the cumulative health risk of typical chemical mixtures of particulate matters (PM). The joint toxicity of binary mixtures is estimated by analyzing both genomic similarity and dose-response curve of relevant pollutants for the chemical-induced genomic residual effect. Specifically, the modified relative potency factor (mRPF) of mixtures is introduced for this purpose, and the ratio of activation (RA) value is defined to assess the corresponding health risks of the mixtures. As a methodology demonstration, the health risk of typical binary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) mixtures in PM, containing Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) as a component, is assessed using the proposed solution. Our results indicate that the combined effect of pairwise PAHs of BaP with Benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) and Benz[a]anthracene (BaA) is synergistic on p53 pathway, and that the health risk of the such mixtures increases compared to that of the individual ones. Obviously, the cumulative health risk of environmental mixtures will be underestimated when the synergistic effect is wrongly assumed to be additive. To our knowledge, this is the first study ever report on a computational solution to the health risk assessment of environmental pollution via joint toxicity prediction. The novel methodology proposed here makes full use of the open-access in vitro assay data and transcriptomic information in literatures and provides a successful demonstration of the concept of systems biology and translational science.

Multiple-species hormetic phenomena induced by indole: A case study on the toxicity of indole to bacteria, algae and human cells

Hormesis is a dose-response relationship phenomenon characterized by low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition. Although hormetic phenomena have been reported in broadly ranging biological areas, there is still no unified mechanism of hormesis. Investigating multiple-species hormesis of one compound and then exploring the possible mechanism may be an effective approach to clarify the reason for the occurrence of hormetic phenomena in a broad range of organisms. In this study, indole was selected as the test chemical due to the broad biological and hormetic effects of indole compounds. The results show that indole induces multiple-species hormetic phenomena in bacteria (Aliivibrio fischeri (A. fischeri), Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis), algae (Microcystis aeruginosa and Selenastrum capricornutum), and human cells (human skin fibroblasts and human cervical cancer cells). Through in-depth investigation of the time-dependent hormetic effects of indole, indole derivatives and indole's structural analogs on the bioluminescence of A. fischeri, indole ring has been identified as the potential key structure that causes indole to act on quorum sensing of A. fischeri to induce hormetic effects on the bioluminescence at lag, logarithmic, and stationary phases. Therefore, the occurrence of multiple-species hormetic phenomena is speculated to be derived from the action of indole on the cell-to-cell communication of organism cells. This paper can not only further confirm the generalizability of hormesis but also provide a reasonable explanation for hormesis, which will benefit the development of hormesis and the risk assessment of environmental pollutants.

In vitro study on the joint hepatoxicity upon combined exposure of cadmium and BDE-209

Joint toxicity is an important issue during the risk assessment of environmental pollutants. Contamination of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the environmental and biological settings poses substantial health risk to humans. Although previous studies demonstrated the co-occurrence of cadmium and decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209) in environmental mediums, food chains and even human body, their potentially joint toxicities remain elusive thus far. Our investigation here with respect to the hepatotoxicity in vitro clearly demonstrated that combined exposure of cadmium and BDE-209 aggravated the injuries in hepatocytes, which was evidenced by the additive effects on the induction of remarkable morphological alternations, LDH release, cell apoptosis and necrosis, impairment of mitochondrial activity and transmembrane potential. Enhanced ROS production was one of the mechanisms for cell apoptosis and death upon joint treatment. Additionally, more cadmium-treated cells underwent apoptosis than BDE-209-treated cells while more ROS was generated with BDE-209 treatment, indicating that other mechanisms might be involved in cadmium-induced apoptosis. Our results would be helpful for evaluating the joint-hepatotoxicity upon combined exposure of cadmium and BDE-209 as well as investigating the underlying mechanisms.

Soil Variability and Biogeochemical Fluxes: Toward a Better Understanding of Soil Processes at the Land Surface

Core Ideas Pattern recognition techniques can help explain biogeochemical flux variability. Dynamic factors and their impact on biogeochemical flux variability need better identification. Controls on biogeochemical fluxes are time and space scale dependent. Soil biogeochemical fluxes in the vadose zone are characterized by a large degree of variability in space and time. This fact leads to the need for the development and application of appropriate methodologies to better understand the high nonlinearity and complex feedback mechanisms responsible for such fluxes. In this sense, there still exists a lack of knowledge in topics such as the scale dependence of the spatial and temporal variability of the controls on soil moisture and biodegradation rates and the dynamic behavior of flow and transport model parameter, and its association with the presence of roots. Knowledge of the variability of biogeochemical fluxes is needed for assorted applications ranging from natural hazards and environmental pollution risk assessment to agricultural production and water resources management. The contributions to this special section epitomize the ongoing effort toward the characterization, quantification, modeling, and understanding of biogeochemical fluxes in the vadose zone at several spatial and temporal scales. The main progress has been the identification of different controls on soil moisture and biodegradation rates depending on the scale of the study as well as the important dependence of the spatial and temporal variability of biogeochemical fluxes on dynamic properties such as vegetation and weather variables.
