This paper first analyzes the specific characteristics of the RFID technology, provides an overview on the RFID technology solution to solve the management problem of the battery compartment, introduces the RFID technology application on the management of charging vehicles, as well as on the unified management of battery compartment in battery replacement charging stations. The paper makes the outlook on the RFID technology application in other fields of the electric vehicle replacement charging stations.

Electronic Borrow-Back System of Colleges and Universities Digital Library Based on RFID

A detailed analysis of the system structure, function, principle, information flow and the implementation of system was given. The actual application validated that the system greatly improves the service efficiency, quality and level of colleges and universities library, which has the important meaning to the digital library integration development.

Application of RFID Technology in Patient Tracking and Medication Traceability in Emergency Care

One of the most important factors that directly affects the quality of health care is patient safety. Minimize the occurrence of adverse events is one of the main challenges for health professionals. This requires continuous tracking of the patient by different areas and services, a process known as traceability and proper patient identification and medication prescribed. This article presents an information system for patient tracking and drugs developed for the Emergency Department of Hospital A Coruña. The systems use RFID technology to perform various tasks: (1) locate patients in different areas; (2) measure patient care times and waiting times; (3) identify unitary doses of medication; and (4) ensure the correct matching between the patient and the medication prescribed by the doctor. The hardware infrastructure as well as the optimal configuration of devices interconnected via a wireless network was determined by conducting a detailed coverage study. To support all the functionality needed, specific tools were designed and integrated with proprietary software applications. The RFID system was evaluated positively by staff from different professional profiles involved in its development or subsequent implementation.

Application of RFID System in Manufacturing Production Control

Experience of foreign armies in the application of RFID technology in logistics

RFID technology has found a wide application in both civilian and military systems with very different purposes; moreover, a tremendous growth of its application is predicted in the future. As a support to core activities, both in the Army and business systems, logistics must provide the conditions for a continuous system optimization, which can be achieved by RFID technology. It provides data collecting, processing, automated identification and storage. The most important factors of logistics information systems are satisfied with this technology. The main feature of the logistics of controlling - that data is always to be collected at a source - is also present. Managing supply chains is almost inconceivable without modern information systems. This technology enables automated data processing thus creating conditions which facilitate decision making. Military applications of RFID technology include monitoring codified items to the extent required by competent commanders, as well as documenting changes in business processes within provided logistic functions of supply. This work gives an analytical approach to the methods of RFID technology application in foreign armies with regard to its possible introduction into the practice of the Serbian Army.

RFID-based Authentication Protocol for Implantable Medical Device

U-healthcare, which grafted advanced IT technology onto medical technology, is in the limelight because it can provide medical services at anytime and anywhere. U-healthcare system applied RFID technology for Implantable Medical Device (IMD), but patient's biometric information can be easily exposed to third parties. In this article, RFID-based U-healthcare authentication protocol is proposed to prevent illegal usage for personal biometric information exposed to the third patty. The proposed protocol guarantees patients' biometric information integrity as compounding random numbers between administrators and hospital/clinic managers, and uses continuous number SEQ and time stamp T to synchronize IMD/administrators and administrators/hospital managers. Also, to protect user's privacy from the third party, patients' biometric information can be safely guarded by managing patients' security identifiers by administrators.

RFID 기술을 적용한 지능형 유통매장 관리시스템 설계 및 구현

본 논문은 RFID 기술 적용을 통해 유통매장을 효율적으로 관리할 수 있는 지능형 유통매장 관리시스템의 설계 및 구현 사항에 대해 논한 것이다. 구체적인 내용으로서는 시스템 개발에 요구되는 기능을 정의하고 시스템의 구조를 설계하고 서비스 제어 절차를 제시하였다. 또한, 설계된 시스템을 구현하고 구현된 시스템의 기능 및 성능을 검증하기 위해 관련 시험을 수행하였다. 그 결과 129개 항목에 걸친 기능시험을 통해 모든 가능이 정상 동작함을 확인하였고, 성능시험을 통해 RFID 미들웨어, RFID 리더기 및 태그에 대한 성능도 확인할 수 있었다. In this paper, we discuss design and implementation of intelligent retail store management system through the application of RFID technology to effectively manage retail stores. Firstly, we defined functionality required for system development, designed the system structure, and proposed the service control procedures. Secondly, we implemented the designed system, and then conducted related tests to verify functionality and performance of the system. As a result, we confirmed through functional tests including 129 items that everything was normal behavior, and were able to determine the performance through testing of RFID middleware, RFID readers and tags.

RFID Technology Applications with PMIS for Managing RMC Truck Operations

This research presents a strategy and information system to manage the logistics of delivery ready mixed concrete (RMC) under the integrated environment of PMIS+RFID. PMIS is system tool and technique used in construction sectors to delivery information. Information that can be extracted electronically in real time is more valuable than data gathered and maintained manually. RFID technology can help to improve data accuracy through supply chains and by identifying products and objects at specific points through automatic identification. The objectives of these two implementations can be able to improve the efficiency of logistics management for RMC truck process, and to verify the technical and practical feasibility of PMIS+RFID application in construction industry. This may be realistic given the dynamics of daily activities on construction sites. This research is focused on examples on real world case study, applications and research theme related and connected to PMIS+RFID technology. It demonstrated that PMIS+RFID technology has been automatically implemented and has shown process information about the RMC truck and the overall status information about it, both quickly and accurately. As a result, the construction site where needs 300 <TEX>$m^3$</TEX> pouring (50 RMC trucks) per day can be reduced total 250 minutes. Moreover, this time saving is related to the labour cost saving. From the case studies, RFID+PMIS system was proven in terms of effectiveness rather than current method.

A multimode, power-adjustable transmitter for UHF mobile RFID reader

Aiming at the expansive application of RFID technology, design considerations are expatiated to a highly-integrated, multimode, power-adjustable transmitter in mobile UHF RFID reader with CMOS process. The transmitter consists of digital, baseband and RF sections, including an up-conversion mixer and a gain-variable power amplifier (PA). Multiple data modes can be generated in digital section. The direct-conversion RF section is proposed to minimize the off-chip components and provide a low-cost, highly efficient solution. The highlight of the paper is the PA can achieve a maximum output power of 26 dBm and maintain a power-added efficiency (PAE) higher than 40% over the 18---26 dBm power range. Feasibility of the transmitter is validated by ADS simulator.

A Study of Applying RFID for Heat Block Management in IC Packaging Factory

In the integrated circuit (IC) packaging process, including operations of die sawing, die bonding, wire bonding, molding, plating, marking, trim/form, and inspection. Purposes of packaging include protecting ICs, making ICs easier to handle, and connecting ICs to the circuit outside. The wire bond stations are the bottleneck in the packaging and assemble process where the heat block is the key auxiliary parts in the stations. This research proposes a RFID-enabled Heat Block Management System (RHMS) to accurately control the progress of the IC packaging production line to meet the customer requirements. Our research analyzed all the flows of heat block management operations during before and after introducing RHMS. Hypothesis testing can verify significant difference between two sample sizes. Based on the statistics test of hypothesis, we compared the difference for before and after introducing RHMS. The results show that the RHMS can bring advantage for heat block management in wire bond stations. Moreover, it has clear improvement of saving counting and revising operation time. The contributions of this research are not only a case study but also a direction for applying RFID technology on IC packaging industry.

Investigating RFID Enabled Devices in Smart Electronic Learning Environments

For e-learning systems to be successful, proper understanding of the learner is crucial. This can be done with the use of learnersâ?? profiles. However, there is a need for the availability of such information for mobile learning environments to make it available when the learner roams between different spaces. This paper investigates the application of RFID technologies for this use. We suggest using new advancements in RFID technologies with smart tags to identify and extract learnersâ?? data/profile in the move. Furthermore, the learner will be carrying this data for better learning interoperability in smart spaces. New interesting educational scenarios are becoming available to provide context-awareness for the educational process. The tradeoffs between the availability of further information and privacy are discussed.

ID-Services: an RFID middleware architecture for mobile applications

The use of RFID middleware to support application development for and integration of RFID hardware into information systems has become quite common in RFID applications where reader devices remain stationary, which currently represents the largest part of all RFID applications in use. Another field for applying RFID technology which is offering a huge set of novel possibilities and applications are mobile applications, where readers are no longer fixed. In order to address the specific issues of mobile RFID-enabled applications and to support developers in rapid application development, we present ID-Services, an architecture for an RFID middleware that is designed to support mobile applications. The ID-Services approach has been used to implement MoVIS (Mobile Visitor Information System), a mobile application which allows museum visitors to request individually adapted multimedia information about exhibits in an intuitive way.

AGRICULTURAL SUPPLY CHAINS: TRACK AND TRACE FOR IMPROVED FOOD SAFETY

Safety has emerged as an issue for the fresh fruit and vegetable industry with reports of several food poisoning outbreaks traced to E. Coli. Although these outbreaks generate a great deal of attention, probably many more fresh food contamination instances go undetected. While the agricultural supply chain is complex, new technologies are available that hold the promise of better track and trace for fresh foods. This article examines the trends and applications of RFID and related information technologies as a means of improving the safety for fresh foods in addition to being a platform for other innovations. Overall, data and information technologies will gain increasing importance in agriculture, affecting diverse areas such as food safety, supply chain, and marketing.

Application of RFID technologies in the temperature mapping of the pineapple supply chain

Current temperature tracking systems lack the convenience and accuracy demanded by the real conditions of a fast-paced produce supply chain. In recent years RFID technology has been suggested to be an enhanced method for temperature tracking because of its many benefits, such as using little instrumentation, offering the quick readings necessary for real-time decision making, and allowing the capture of long-duration temperature profiles. However its limitation lies in that probeless systems fail to provide accurate temperature readings in some of the critical points of the pallet and the load. The objective of this work was to study the use of RFID in temperature monitoring by comparing the performance of RFID temperature tags versus conventional temperature tracking methods, as well as RFID temperature tags with probe versus RFID temperature tags without probes and their utilization along the supply chain. Therefore, the temperature mapping of a shipping trial comprising pallets of crownless pineapples instrumented using different RFID temperature dataloggers and traditional temperature dataloggers and packed in two kinds of packages (corrugated boxes and reusable plastic containers) inside a container was performed. The results showed that RFID temperature tags are analogous with regards to accuracy to the conventional methods, but have a superior performance because they allow quick instrumentation and data recovery, and the possibility of accessing the sensor program and data at any point of the supply chain without line of sight. In addition, the use of RFID tags with probe was justified by its role in determining the efficiency of the pre-cooling operations and low temperature abuse tracking during transportation and refrigerated storage; while the RFID tags without probe proved useful for high temperature abuse monitoring during transportation and refrigerated storage. The creation of a RFID sensor with a probe, able to record both ambient and pulp temperatures simultaneously is suggested.

A METALLIC RFID TAG DESIGN FOR STEEL-BAR AND WIRE-ROD MANAGEMENT APPLICATION IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY

In recent years, RFID solutions are finding an increasing number of applications in a wide variety of industries. There are some natural limitations when applying RFID technology in the steel industry, because the tags do not function well in metallic environments. Even though some commercial RFID metal tags are available in the market, they are found to be too expensive by steel companies. This paper proposes a useful and practical RFID tag design for management applications involving steel-bar and wire- rod products manufactured by the steel industry. The dual-function metallic RFID tag, comprising of both an RFID code and a barcode, involves technology advancement in RFID design, and named Window- Tag (WinTag). The maximum read range of this tag can reach about 5.7 m for the radiated power of 4.0 W EIRP in free space. In the practical application, the maximum read ranges are about 2.3 m and 5.0 m for the worst and best case, respectively. The design methodology as well as simulation and measurement results of the WinTag are presented in this paper. The low profile and low cost features of the WinTag makes the RFID tag well suited for metallic type tag of labeling system that requires integration of RFID technology.

Managing emerging technology and organizational transformation: An acculturative analysis

From 1992 to 2005 Singapore National Library Board (NLB) successfully incorporated IT into its working procedures and customer service. The organization has adopted RFID and other technology applications; transformed its operating routines and provided access to millions of publications for its library users. A key issue in this transformation was how the organization managed its cultural change and took advantage of emerging technology. The success can be considered remarkable since, in the past, public libraries in Singapore have carried the stigma of traditional public sector organizations in tending to resist new technology. We examined the cultural changes resulting from introduction of IT in order to show how the Singapore National Library Board managed its employees’ adaptation to the new technology. A number of key factors emerged; these show how an organization can manage this type of cultural adaptation.

Role of Pilot Study in Assessing Viability of New Technology Projects: The Case of RFID in Parking Operations

The use of pilot studies to evaluate the economic justification of technology projects is common in practice. The pilot studies play even greater role in the projects affecting customer interactions with the product/service offerings since perception and/or reaction of customers is captured and analyzed through such studies. Yet, many times the methodology used in these studies lacks rigor and comprehensiveness, and there are scopes for further improvement. The current literature provides limited information on how the pilot studies should be used to decide whether to go ahead with a proposed technology project or not. In this paper we present guidelines for effectively using pilot studies in making such decisions. With the help of a real-life pilot study on deployment of RFID technology in parking operations at a university, we discuss how the proposed guidelines may be implemented to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the proposed project. In recent times RFID technology is getting increasing attention and many organizations are in the process of deploying this technology. The paper offers a timely and cost-effective evaluation study of a particular application of RFID technology. We found that users’ benefits and costs played a crucial role in determining whether the proposed project should go forward or not. Also, we found that intangible benefits and costs to be important. These findings along with our discussions on the general methodology will provide practical guidelines for evaluating viability of technology projects using pilot studies.
