Digital Language Archiving: Reuse and Adaptation of Non-LIS Learning Materials in LIS Education

As a digital repository type that is gaining prominence, language archives are in need of information professionals to maintain and provide access to. Yet, awareness of digital language archives among the US LAM professionals and educators is currently low. Our project’s analysis of available relevant training materials for linguists and community members informed development of a graduate course that prepares LAM professionals for effective and ethical stewardship of digital language archives. In this paper, following a brief literature review of the latest relevant research and publications, results of examination of three major sources of language archiving learning materials are presented and discussed. This discussion’s focus is on the ideas for reuse and adaptation of these materials in LIS education and on implementation of some of these ideas in our project-developed course at the University of North Texas.

Human resource management practices in corporate restructuring: a review and agenda for future research

PurposeAlthough corporate restructuring has the potential to provide performance benefits to firms, it can also bring upheaval and challenges to the restructuring firms’ employees. Further, the frequency of corporate restructuring across the business landscape shows no signs of abating. The purpose of this review paper is to identify and synthesize what is known about the selection, implementation and outcomes of the human resource management (HRM) practices that firms deploy in the context of corporate restructuring, with the additional aim of distilling fertile research areas for scholars and best-practice guidance for practitioners.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is based upon a systematic review of 110 articles published in highly-ranked, peer-reviewed journals from 2003 to 2023.FindingsThis review surfaces the predominant ability-, motivation- and opportunity-enhancing HRM practices employed by restructuring firms. It further elucidates the major themes and challenges associated with the use and outcomes of these practices across firms and restructuring settings. The analysis illuminates gaps and opportunities in the literature to suggest future directions for the study of HRM practices and corporate restructuring.Originality/valueThis paper identifies, categorizes and integrates the extant literature on HRM practices and outcomes in corporate restructuring, which is a topic that is salient to both researchers and managers. Papers are classified using the Ability, Motivation and Opportunity framework. An inclusive definition of corporate restructuring, which includes organizational, portfolio, governance and financial restructuring, is applied across two decades of research to provide a comprehensive and holistic assessment.

Lean process mining: adopting process mining in lean manufacturing for dynamic process mapping and avoiding waste occurrence in real time

Purpose This paper aims to recommend a method entitled “lean process mining (LPM)” for mapping, analyzing and improving the material/information flows in the value stream of manufacturing processes. Design/methodology/approach The method is developed based on literature review and in-depth explorative research in value stream mapping and process mining approaches. The proposed LPM framework consists of three phases including as-realized process state, improvement strategies and reengineered process state. Hence, firstly, extracts the as-realized model, measures the identified wastes and identifies the sources of wastes. Secondly, implements prediction-recommendation-prevention strategies. Thirdly, reengineers the process model and measures the improved wastes. Findings It presents the applicability of the proposed approach in (1) online observation of manufacturing process behavior and tracing the process deviations dynamically in real time to identify the sources of waste; (2) avoiding defective products occurring during the production and eliminating the relevant derived wastes including wasted material, wasted energy, waste of labor, excess inventory, increased production lead time and wasted operational costs. Originality/value The practical application of LPM is illustrated through implementing it in a real-life manufacturing case. The outcomes prove the remarkable applicability of this method in lean manufacturing to avoid waste occurrence in the value stream.

A Review of Research on Chinese Medium of Instruction

Medium language appears in the process of second language teaching and learning with high frequency, but related researchers have different attitudes towards medium language. By reviewing the relevant literature, sorting out scholars' views on the use of mediated language in Chinese language teaching and the application experiences developed by different views, this paper summarizes the current research results on mediated language in second language teaching, especially in international Chinese language teaching, and looks forward to the future development of international Chinese language education classrooms.

CURRENT STATUS OF DIAGNOSTIC INFECTIONS CAUSED BY HELICOBACTER PYLORI

The article is devoted to the review of the latest scientific research related to methods of diagnosis of infections caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria. Based on the review of research in the field of diagnosis of infections caused by Helicobacter pylori, modern approaches used in global medical practice were analysed. In modern times, diagnosing H. pylori is a significant problem given the variety of methods and their effectiveness, and there is no single universal approach for detecting this pathogenic bacterium. Infection caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is one of the world's most common stomach and intestinal infections. More than half of the world's population is infected with this bacterium, which often leads to severe diseases such as stomach and duodenal ulcers, as well as stomach cancer. Modern medicine develops every day, providing new methods of diagnosis and treatment. Significant scientific and technological changes are taking place in Helicobacter pylori diagnostics, which open up new perspectives and opportunities. One of the leading prospects is the search for more accurate, fast and convenient diagnostic methods that would be less invasive and more accessible to patients. The development of molecular and genetic methods, in particular polymerase chain reaction (PCR), opens up opportunities for accurate and rapid detection of H. pylori and the determination of its virulent properties. Another perspective is the development of accurate biomarkers and prognostic methods that will predict the risk of developing complications due to H. pylori infection. This will help plan and individualise treatment strategies for patients with this infection. The search for new drugs to eradicate H. pylori is also a critical prospect, especially considering the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. The article compares invasive and non-invasive methods of disease research, highlighting their advantages and limitations. Therefore, leading scientists and practitioners in the field of gastroenterology are recommended to use two or more methods, in particular, to combine invasive and non-invasive approaches, to use a serological method for population screening, to control and eradicate H. pylori mainly by non-invasive methods, using PCR as the most accurate method for diagnosing H. pylori, as well as to determine the molecular and genetic characteristics of the microorganism and assess its virulence to form an idea of the further course and prognosis of the disease. The purpose of the work is to systematically review modern methods of diagnosing infections caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) to evaluate their effectiveness, advantages and limitations. An overview of the state of the art in diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infections is presented, focusing on the various detection methods, their advantages and disadvantages, and their role in the course of the disease and the treatment of this infection. A variety of diagnostic methods are reviewed, including both invasive and non-invasive approaches, including endoscopy, histology, urea breath test (UBT), polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods, next-generation sequencing (NGS), biosensors, and MALDI-TOF MS . The advantages and limitations of each of the methods, as well as their effectiveness in the diagnosis of H. pylori infections, are discussed. Studies have shown the importance of developing new approaches and their application in practice to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this infection.

Schools addressing health, wellbeing and sustainability challenges: a literature review of perspectives on social justice, equity and agency

PurposeThis paper explores perspectives on social justice, equity and agency when schools address health, wellbeing and sustainability challenges.Design/methodology/approachThe paper draws on a literature review of educational research. The analysis is narrative, highlighting how binary conceptions of equity, social justice and agency are explicitly or implicitly evident in the studies included in the review, distinguishing between as well as noting the interplay between the different conceptions.FindingsPerspectives on social justice and equity are emphasizing the need to address (1) a more equal sharing of resources in education, (2) dominance in education, and (3) community/ies and education as a common good. Perspectives on agency are framed as situated (1) between people (2) between people and structures or social contexts, and (3) between people and nature or the more-than-human. The paper furthermore highlights tendencies and experiences regarding the possibility of addressing these perspectives in different forms of educational practices.Research limitations/implicationsA potential limitation in this review is that 17 out of the 23 included studies are by authors with an Anglo-Saxon background, while a further 3 have a European background. As such, the review mainly represents “Western” perspectives on social justice, equity and agency.Originality/valueThe findings in the paper indicate that despite the fact that social justice, equity and agency are concepts that have been discussed in educational research for a very long time, they cannot be seen as taken-for-granted concepts, and that the research contains a diverse range of perspectives on these concepts — also within research authored by researchers with an Anglo-Saxon or European background.

Transforming Higher Education Towards Economic Development: A Zimbabwean Case Study

This study is a systematic review of research on higher education in Zimbabwe, in particular, it assesses the contribution of higher education towards engendering socio-economic development. This is achieved through identifying higher education activities prioritised in research during the study period which spans a three-year period from 2021 to 2023. This period comes just after the introduction of Education 5.0, which includes innovation and industrialisation. Furthermore, the articles are assessed on whether they address socio-economic development issues. A total of 41 abstracts of research articles were subjected to qualitative content analysis. The findings reveal five major activities that research has focussed on in priority order: teaching and learning; quality in education; management operations and policy; knowledge and research; and equity and equality. Furthermore, while the analysis indicates that the prioritised activities contribute towards socio-economic development, the nuances of balancing political, individual and epistemic priorities affecting higher education institutions are brought to the fore. The identified activities underscore the need for interventions at national, institutional, departmental and individual lecturer levels. However, there are concerns about the de-prioritisation of gender equality and equity in higher learning institutions in Zimbabwe. In conclusion, the research topics not only highlight the complexities and the dynamics faced by higher education institutions in Zimbabwe in playing their expected role of contributing to socio-economic development but also the need to foreground specificity to allow for the identification of effective interventions and processes required to support higher education’s goal of contributing towards economic growth. The study further concludes that the neglect of equity and equality issues may be detrimental to educational outcomes geared towards economic growth.

A comprehensive review on the role of Vitamin A on human health and nutrition

Vitamin A is a crucial nutrient that protects the body from oxidative stress caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cellular components. Its antioxidant properties helps maintaining various physiological functions that depend on its presence, including vision, immune function and skin health. The human body can convert natural forms of vitamin A (retinol, retinal and retinoic acid) and provitamin A (β-carotene) into active forms, which interact with specific molecular targets, influencing gene expression, cell differentiation and cellular processes. This comprehensive review provides an in-depth examination of vitamin A, covering its dietary sources, physiological roles and consequences of deficiency. In this research review explored the metabolic pathways of vitamin A, including absorption, transport and storage, as well as its potential applications, offering a thorough understanding of this essential nutrient. Furthermore, we have decreased the latest research on vitamin A's role in, maintaining healthy vision, immune function, and skin health, treating various diseases and conditions, such as retinal disorders, infectious diseases and cancer, mechanisms of action, including gene regulation, cell signaling, and antioxidant activity, relationships with other nutrients and health outcomes, including vitamin D, iron, and zinc, impact of deficiency on human health, including night blindness, impaired immunity, and skin disorders and emerging research on potential benefits and risks, including its role in chronic diseases and interactions with medications. Research progress on femoral attachment positioning during medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction

To review research progress on femoral attachment positioning during medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction, so as to provide a reference for accurate positioning in clinic. The literature at home and abroad on femoral attachment positioning during MPFL reconstruction was extensively reviewed and summarized. MPFL is the main ligament that restricts patellar outward migration, so MPFL reconstruction is the main treatment for patellar dislocation, but the accuracy of intraoperative femoral attachment positioning will significantly affect the effectiveness. At present, there are three main methods for femoral attachment positioning in MPFL reconstruction, including imaging positioning, bony landmark positioning, and new technology. Among them, the main imaging positioning method is the "Schöttle point" method, but it has high requirements for fluoroscopic positioning, and can only be accurately positioned under standard lateral fluoroscopy of the femur. The bony landmark positioning method mainly locates the femoral attachment by touching or dissecting the bony landmarks such as adductor tubercles and medial epicondyle of femur, but its disadvantages are that the positioning is not accurate enough, the intraoperative visual field exposure requirements are high, and a large incision is required. In order to avoid the problem that the simple bony landmark positioning method, in recent years, the combination of bony landmarks combined with arthroscopy, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, and robot-assisted positioning methods have begun to be used in clinical practice. New technology localization methods have shown good results by preparing guides before operation, planning positioning paths in advance, or directly using robots to assist positioning during operation. The accurate positioning of the femoral attachment in MPFL reconstruction is crucial, and the method of accurate and rapid intraoperative determination needs to be further improved and optimized. In the future, it is expected that the combination of computer image recognition correction technology and intraoperative position assistance will solve this problem.

A review of research on the development of low-orbit Internet constellations

In recent years, with the surge in Internet users, innovative companies such as SpaceX and OneWeb have planned to build low-orbit Internet constellations, triggering a global boom in the development of low-orbit satellite Internet constellations. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the development of low-orbit Internet constellations at home and abroad and the technical difficulties currently faced by low-orbit Internet constellations in their development. This paper first introduces three representative low-orbit Internet constellation plans abroad (Starlink, OneWeb, Lightspeed) and the latest development of domestic constellations. Then, based on the characteristics of low-orbit Internet constellations, the five major technical challenges faced by low-orbit Internet constellations are analyzed in detail: constellation relative motion evolution prediction, constellation autonomous navigation and orbit determination, constellation variable path planning, constellation self-organization collaborative control, constellation communication and network services. Finally, based on the current development trend of low-orbit Internet constellations, suggestions are given for the development of low-orbit Internet constellations in my country based on my country's national conditions.

Scoping review of sustainable diets research reveals a thematic and disciplinary emphasis on nutrition and environment

Abstract Sustainable diets have been identified as an important component of a food systems transformation that is urgently needed to meet global sustainability and development goals. This study addresses the lack of a comprehensive synthesis and overview of the sustainable diets literature, including its evolution over time and across disciplines, and sheds light on whether and how this body of work addresses dimensions of sustainability as defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation’s (FAO) sustainable diets framework. Topic modeling, a type of natural language processing, was used to perform a thematic scoping review of 855 articles published between 2000-2022 to identify trends and themes in a way that was rapid, transparent, reliable, and reproducible. This research finds demonstrated growth in the field of sustainable diets research, with the majority (66%) of sustainable diets articles considered in this study published in the last three years of the study period. Sixty-three percent of the sustainable diets research articles can be characterized by two topics, “sustainability impacts of dietary patterns” and “sustainable diets and food system policy.” FAO components of sustainable diets related to local and seasonal foods, culture, and equity receive relatively little research attention, whereas components of health, environment, and food security each align with approximately a third of the research literature. This is also reflected in the subject classification analysis, in which nearly half of the research (44%) was classified as Nutrition and Dietetics and/or Environmental Studies. This research highlights the need for more transdisciplinary research that addresses areas of equity, culture, social processes, and context as well as the intersections of sustainability dimensions to better understand the need for, implications, and directions of sustainable diets to support a sustainable food systems transformation.

The impact of increased screen time on students during covid-19 school closures

This article is a review performed through an extensive review of previous research. Its purpose is to provide a concise overview of the current knowledge regarding the effects of increased screen usage on kids during the COVID-19 school closures. Our objective was to offer a thorough and all-encompassing examination of the current body of research, scrutinizing and deliberating on the methodologies and findings of previously conducted studies pertaining to the subject matter. The global transition to remote learning during the COVID-19 epidemic resulted in an unprecedented increase in the amount of time students spent using screens. Recent research has indicated that children' screen usage has increased by an average of 11.5 hours per week during school closures. This large growth has had significant effects on students' physical health, mental well-being, and educational achievements. Further digital literacy and access to a wide range of learning tools are two good results. However, there have been proven adverse consequences, including musculoskeletal pain, eye strain, anxiety, sadness, and declining in educational inequalities. In addition to highlighting the benefits and challenges of more screen time, this article shows ways to reduce its negative impacts, including managing screen time, exercising, and engaging in mindfulness exercises. The essay also examines what it means for educators, parents, and lawmakers highlighting the importance of adopting well-rounded strategies for digital learning that protect student well-being and ensure fairness. It also emphasizes how important it is to conduct additional study in order to comprehend the long-term impacts and create efficient solutions catered to various demographics.

DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPETENCY MATRIX IN A FRAMEWORK FOR THE PRACTICE OF RATIONAL MEDICINE USE IN THE TREATMENT OF SYSTEMIC ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION

Background: The use of medicines plays an important therapeutic role in the care of hypertension. Nonetheless, the inadequacies related to pharmacotherapy are still a major challenge to health, and the lack of systematisation of the competencies to be acquired during the training of health professionals undermines practices involving rational medicine use in the treatment of hypertension. This study was intended to develop and validate a competency matrix that can be used in the education and training of health professionals, contributing to the practice of rational medicine use (RMU) in the treatment of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH). Methods: This is applied research containing an integrative review and exploratory research with the presence of a systematic search, following guidelines proposed by the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and the PRISMA group, and the building of the competency matrix was carried out through a focus group with researchers who work in the area registered in two research groups certified by an agency linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Education. The matrix was validated using the Delphi method by expert judges selected using Fehring’s technique and scoring criteria. Results: The panel of experts reached a consensus on the relevance of four intrinsic dimensions containing seven competencies and 31 knowledge, skills and attitudes of the RMU in SAH and three extrinsic dimensions that encompassed nine competencies and 22 knowledge, skills and attitudes of the RMU in SAH, with a frequency of agreement greater than 80%.

Community language schools: a scoping review of research, 2001 to 2023

ABSTRACT Community language schools provide language and cultural education to young people. Forming a key education sector worldwide with an estimated two million enrolments, these community-run, out-of-hours schools nonetheless tend to be marginalised by ‘mainstream’ education and ‘mainstream’ educational research. There has been a dramatic increase in research into community language schools in the past two decades, but there is still no systematic review that analyses the education role and contribution of this sector. This study aims to provide a clear picture of the extent, nature and gaps in the existing research into community language schools from 2001 to 2023. The study tracks how the research focus has shifted and grown in the past decades, but also highlights that the marginalisation of community language schools and research remains. The study directs researchers to relevant publications and suggests issues and topics in need of further research.

Teachers' Gestures and How They Matter.

How do teachers' gestures influence students' learning? This article reviews research investigating the role of gestures in communication, focusing on teachers' communication with their students, primarily in mathematics and science instruction. We first briefly consider gesture's role in communication more generally as a backdrop for considering teaching as a special context for communication. We then describe teachers' spontaneous gesturing in teaching contexts, and we consider how teachers' spontaneous gestures might influence students' learning. We then consider experimental studies that provide causal support for the effects of teachers' gestures on students' learning. We conclude by discussing future directions and implications for educational practice.

Analisa Peran UMKM Terhadap Perkembangan Ekonomi di Indonesia

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are productive businesses owned by individuals or single business entities and qualify as micro-enterprises. SMEs are businesses that operate independently and have no direct or indirect links to medium or large-scale companies. This study aims to determine the role of SMEs in participating in building the Indonesian economy. The research method used is the Literature review research method which is carried out by searching, collecting, and analyzing data sources from various previously published scientific works. From the results of this study, SMEs in Indonesia play a very important role in the economy, functioning as job providers, supporters of local products, and significant contributors to GDP. As well as being a supporter of the stability of the Indonesian economy. SMEs also experienced development from 2020 - 2023. Where when Indonesia experienced the Covid-19 pandemic, the economy that occurred this year decreased drastically so that several SMEs suffered losses. But in 2021 the Indonesian economy began to experience a slow increase.

Family Factors of Conduct Problems in Children and their Genetic Aspects: Review of Empirical Research

The analysis of empirical studies and reviews was conducted to highlight the influence of four family factors: socio-economic status, family structure, parental stress (symptoms of anxiety and depression in mothers), and inconsistent discipline on children’s behavioral problems. Studies that assess heredity’s contribution to each factor were also examined. Known and hypothesized mechanisms that negatively affect child behavior are described. The importance of changing the proximal environment for correcting behavior problems, particularly inconsistent discipline, is emphasized.
