Linguistic, Aesthetic And Cultural Aspects Of Translating Literary Texts (Arabic-English): A Model For Translation Pedagogy

The main aim of this paper is to explore the different linguistic, aesthetic, and cultural aspects of literary translation. The paper examines the various features of literary translation at both macro and micro levels. It focuses on those features of literary texts that are characteristic of literary works. First, we follow the standard linguistic paradigm in the discussion of literary translation, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and the aesthetic and cultural features of literary texts. The qualitative method is used to explore the various features of literary translation to identify the recurring linguistic and literary devices lacking systematic forms and patterns to find a comparable genre-specific form in the target language. The model proposed consists of five stages: (1) Retention of sound devices, (2) Retention of syntactic patterns, (3) Retention of semantic features, (4) Retention of figurative language, and (5) Retention of the cultural aspects. The model is a descriptive model for analyzing literary translation procedures and can be used as a pedagogical model for translation practice. Findings show that employing this model would offer translation students new insights to describe challenging linguistic, aesthetic, and cultural features in the source texts to think of some practical solutions for translating literary works.

Phosphorus-doped carbon nitride for enhanced supercapacitor performance and energy storage applications

Exploiting the advantages of graphitic carbon nitride doped with phosphorus (xP-CN) electrodes were designed for high-performance hybrid asymmetric supercapacitor via facile hydrothermal and thermal decomposition techniques. The structural, surface chemistry, functional and morphological characterizations evidence depict successful phosphorus incorporation in Carbon Nitride (CN). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis shows that phosphorus (P) atoms have replaced corner carbon atoms in the CN structure. These findings clearly demonstrate that the presence of phosphorus doping improves the electrochemical activity of the electrodes. The designed three-electrode system has a specific capacitance of 189.36 F/g with a current density of 1 A/g. Phosphorus doping has been discovered to play a significant role in improving both specific capacitance and cycling stability. The capacitance retention of the two-electrode solid-state device has 97.2 % after 5000 cycles. These electrochemical evaluations reveal that the xP-CN electrode exhibits superior electrochemical performances than pristine CN. This doping strategy for CN presents a novel and efficient approach for crafting high-performance supercapacitors.

Results of Lucia Keratoprosthesis Implantation in Severe Corneal Disease

Describe complications, functional success, and retention of the Lucia Keratoprosthesis (KPro). Retrospective interventional case series METHODS: The demographic data, baseline characteristics, complications, functional success, and retention were analyzed for Lucia KPro at the Instituto de Oftalmologia Conde de Valenciana in Mexico City from 2021 to 2023. Multivariate regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier plots were performed to identify associations with functional failure. The main outcome measures were postoperative complications, functional success defined as best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≥20/200 (logMAR 1.0), and device retention rate. Forty-eight eyes of 48 patients (56.88% male) were studied. The mean age at implantation was 57.29 ± 15.63 years (range 27-91), with a mean follow-up of 20.5 ± 8.83 months (range 3-40). Diagnostic indications for implantation included recurrent graft rejection (54.17%), autoimmune disease (20.83%), chemical injury (12.5%), and other (12.5%). At least 1 postoperative complication occurred in 75% of patients, leading to 65 additional interventions (mean number of subsequent procedures: 1.35 ± 1.3, range 0-5). The preoperative BCVA was 2.40 ± 0.36 logMAR. At the final follow-up, 62.5% had achieved functional success and 22.92% had a BCVA of 20/40 (logMAR 0.3) or better. Glaucoma (adjusted OR 469.74, 95% CI 5.02-43939.14, P = .007) and retinal pathology before KPro (adjusted OR 372.38, 95% CI 4.18-33162.11, P = .009) were associated with functional failure. The device remained in place in 95.83% of recipients over the follow-up period. The Lucia KPro offers functional success in severe corneal diseases and excellent retention in the short to intermediate term.

Boston Type II Keratoprosthesis, 7 Years of Experience and Outcomes From a Spanish Tertiary Eye Care Hospital

To report midterm outcomes of Boston Keratoprosthesis type II at a reference center in Spain. Retrospective case series. This observational study included medical records of 9 patients who underwent Boston Keratoprosthesis type II surgery at Cruces University Hospital from May 2016 through May 2023. A total of 9 eyes received this device during the study period. One patient who had undergone a modification of the standard procedure was excluded. Preoperative and postoperative parameters were studied. The main outcomes analyzed were visual acuity, device retention, and complications and their management. The most common indication for implantation was severe Sjögren syndrome (33.3%) followed by graft-versus-host disease (22.2%). The mean follow-up was 3.89 years (±2.08). Visual acuity improved to better than or equal to 20/40 in 8 eyes (88.8%) and 20/25 in 6 eyes (66.6%), while best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 was achieved in 4 eyes (44.4%). At the last visit, maximum visual acuity was maintained in 4 patients. The most common postoperative complication was retroprosthetic membrane formation (77.7%). New-onset glaucoma was detected in 4 patients (44.4%). Device extrusion occurred in 1 eye and 2 more patients required replacement surgery. All but 1 of the patients are on postoperative treatment with systemic immunosuppressants. The Boston type II Keratoprosthesis is a useful option for visual rehabilitation in end-stage ocular surface diseases. Multidisciplinary management of complications is of vital importance for the maintenance of vision and the device. Immunosuppressive treatment helps control the inflammation that leads to most associated complications.

Investigation of Neuromorphic Behaviors in Access Regions-Integrated Van Der Waals Heterostructures

The emergence of neuromorphic devices has disrupted the traditional von Neumann architecture, providing a solution to the challenges of simulating neural parallel processing and power consumption in conventional computer architectures [1]. Access regions (ARs) are strategically created and positioned in proximity to source and drain electrodes, resulting in a channel that does not overlap with the floating gate (FG) [2]. In this study, we investigated ARs integrated van der Waals heterostructural field-effect transistor (AR-VH-FET) device, constructed by vertically stacking several 2D materials. Specifically, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) served as a channel, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as a tunneling layer, and graphene (Gr) as the FG. We conducted measurements on the transfer and output characteristics to characterize the electrical performance of the AR-VH-FET. Under a fixed VDS, with the application of positive and negative VBG as programming and erasing voltages respectively, we measured device retention and endurance. AR-VH-FET devices not only emulate basic neuromorphic functions but also replicate biological characteristics.

Investigation on self-rectifying properties of Pt/HfO2/Ti with rivet-like structure based on ALD conformal technology

This work explores an architecture for nonvolatile resistive random-access memory (RRAM) systems. The study proposes a self-rectifying RRAM device utilizing a two-terminal 1R selector that harmonizes the gate control efficacy of transistors with the inherent simplicity of diode structures. A rivet-like HfO2-based RRAM array is meticulously constructed through atomic layer deposition (ALD), aiming to enhance device performance and retention stability. The conformal fabrication technique of ALD method is critical in achieving uniform coverage of isolation layers and precise electrode placement, which is instrumental in the fabrication of high-performance memory cells. Empirical analyses indicate significant improvements in rectification and ON/OFF ratios compared to existing RRAM models, bolstered by compatibility with established CMOS processes. It reveals that these advances are conducive to scalable, high-density memory integration, positioning the RRAM as a viable contender for future computational applications that require high efficiency and neuromorphic computing capabilities.

Retention of Antibiotic Cement Delivery Implants in Orthopedic Infection Associated With United Fractures Does Not Increase Recurrence Risk.

To evaluate whether retention of antibiotic cement delivery devices after resolution of orthopaedic infection is associated with recurrence. Retrospective cohort. Academic medical center. Patients with a fracture definitively treated with internal fixation that went on to unite and develop a confirmed fracture-related infection or osteomyelitis after a remote fracture surgery and had implantation of antibiotic-impregnated cement for infection management. Patients were divided into whom the antibiotic implants were retained (Retained Cohort) and whom the antibiotic implants were removed (Removed Cohort). Outcome measures included clinical infection resolution, infection recurrence, time to resolution of infection signs, symptoms and laboratory values, reoperation and readmission rates, and need for soft tissue coverage (local flap vs. free tissue transfer) because of recurrence. Of 98 patients treated for fracture-related infection in united fractures or osteomyelitis after a remote fracture surgery, 39 (39.8%) underwent implantation of antibiotic-impregnated cement delivery devices: 21 (21.4%) beads, 7 (7.1%) rods, and 11 (11.2%) blocks. Twenty patients (51.3%) comprised the Retained Cohort and 19 patients (48.7%) comprised the Removed Cohort. There were few differences in demographics ([American Society of Anesthesiology Score, P = 0.026] and [diabetes, P = 0.047]), infection location, and pathogenic profiles. The cohorts demonstrated no difference in eventual resolution of infection (100% in the Retained Cohort, 95% in the Removed Cohort, P = 0.487) and experienced similar time to clinical infection resolution, based on signs, symptoms, and laboratory values ( P = 0.360). There was no difference in incidence of subsequent infection recurrence after clinical infection resolution (1 recurrence Retained vs. 2 recurrences Removed, P = 0.605) for those considered "cured." Compared with the Retained Cohort, the Removed Cohort underwent more reoperations (0.40 vs. 1.84 reoperations, P < 0.001) and admissions after implantation ( P < 0.001). Retention of antibiotic-impregnated cement delivery devices in patients with orthopaedic infection after fractured bones that have healed was not associated with infection recurrence. Additional surgical intervention with the sole purpose of removing antibiotic delivery devices may not be warranted. Prognostic Level III. Zn2+ doped Ni3(NO3)2(OH)4 nanoflower spheres for electrochemical applications

In this present work, Ni3(NO3)2(OH)4 doped with Zn2+ ions are prepared by a solvothermal method using Ni(NO3)2·6H2O, Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, C16H33(CH3)3NBr (CTAB) and C2H5OH as raw materials. Characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) are used to analyze the materials. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge–discharge curves (GCD) are employed to compare the electrochemical performance of materials with different doping amounts. The electrochemical test results show that doping with Zn2+ significantly enhances the poor electrical conductivity of Ni3(NO3)2(OH)4. Electrochemical tests reveal that the doping amount of 0.4 mmol has the best electrochemical performance with a mass-specific capacitance of 1832 F·g−1 at a current density of 1 A·g−1 in the three-electrode system which is much higher than that of undoping sample (771 F·g−1). Additionally, the assembled NiZn-0.4//AC asymmetric supercapacitor device (ASC) has an energy density of 61.9 Wh·kg−1 at a power density of 747.8 W·kg−1. The Coulombic efficiency retention of the ASC device remains at 98 % after 2000 galvanostatic charge–discharge circles, and the specific capacitance retention is 91 % of the initial value. The doping of Zn2+ provides a valuable approach for enhancing the conductivity and specific capacitance of nickel-based supercapacitor electrode materials.

Electrochemical Ionic Synapses with Mg2+as the Working Ion

AbstractDynamic doping by electrochemical ion intercalation is a promising mechanism for modulating electronic conductivity, allowing for energy‐efficient, brain‐inspired computing hardware. While proton‐based devices have achieved success in terms of speed and efficiency, the volatility and environmental pervasiveness of hydrogen (H) might limit the robustness of devices during fabrication, as well as the long‐term retention of devices after programming. This motivates the search for alternative working ions. In this work, a proof‐of‐concept is demonstrated for electrochemical ionic synapses (EIS) based on intercalation of Mg2+ions. The reported device has a symmetric design, with MgxWO3used as both the gate and channel material. Increasing the Mg fraction,x, in WO3increases the electronic conductance in a continuum over a large range (80 nS − 2 mS). Ex situ characterization of the channel confirms that modulation of channel conductance is due to Mg2+intercalation. Unlike H‐EIS which rapidly loses programmed conductance states over a few seconds when exposed to air, Mg‐EIS can be operated and has good retention in air, with no sign of degradation after 1 h. Mg2+as a working ion with WO3as the channel is a promising material system for EIS with long‐term retention and low energy consumption.

Designed fabrication of MoS2 hollow structures with different geometries and the comparative investigation toward capacitive properties.

Hollow MoS2 cubes and spheres were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method with the hard template method. The structure and morphology were characterized, and their electrochemical properties were studied. It is concluded that the specific capacitance of the hollow MoS2 cubes (335.7 F g-1) is higher than that of the hollow MoS2 spheres (256.1 F g-1). The symmetrical supercapacitors were assembled, and the results indicate that the specific capacitance of the device composed of hollow MoS2 spheres (32.9 F g-1) is slightly lower than that of the hollow MoS2 cube (37.4 F g-1) device. Furthermore, the symmetrical supercapacitor (MoS2-cube//MoS2-cube) provides a maximum energy density of 4.93 W h kg-1, which is greater than that of the symmetrical capacitor (MoS2-sphere//MoS2-sphere, 3.65 W h kg-1). This may indicate that hollow molybdenum disulfide cubes with substructures have more efficient charge transfer capabilities and better capacitance characteristics than hollow spheres. After 8000 cycles, the coulombic efficiency of the two symmetrical capacitors is close to 100%. The capacity retention of the MoS2 sphere device (95.2%) is slightly higher than that of the MoS2 cube device (90.1%). These results show that the pore structure, specific surface, and active site of MoS2 with different hollow structures have a greater impact on its electrochemical properties.

Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation analysis of the conductance drift in Multilevel HfO2-based RRAM devices.

The drift characteristics of valence change memory (VCM) devices have been analyzed through both experimental analysis and 3D kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations. By simulating six distinct low-resistance states (LRS) over a 24-hour period at room temperature, we aim to assess the device temporal stability and retention. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of multi-level operation and reveal insights into the conductive filament (CF) dynamics. The cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of read-out currents measured at different time intervals provide a comprehensive view of the device performance for the different conductance levels. These findings not only enhance the understanding of VCM device switching behaviour but also allow the development of strategies for improving retention, thereby advancing the development of reliable nonvolatile resistive switching memory technologies.

Oxygen tracer diffusion in amorphous hafnia films for resistive memory.

The oxygen diffusion rate in hafnia (HfO2)-based resistive memory plays a pivotal role in enabling nonvolatile data retention. However, the information retention times obtained in HfO2 resistive memory devices are many times higher than the expected values obtained from oxygen diffusion measurements in HfO2 materials. In this study, we resolve this discrepancy by conducting oxygen isotope tracer diffusion measurements in amorphous hafnia (a-HfO2) thin films. Our results show that the oxygen tracer diffusion in amorphous HfO2 films is orders of magnitude lower than that of previous measurements on monoclinic hafnia (m-HfO2) pellets. Moreover, oxygen tracer diffusion is much lower in denser a-HfO2 films deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) than in less dense a-HfO2 films deposited by sputtering. The ALD films yield similar oxygen diffusion times as experimentally measured device retention times, reconciling this discrepancy between oxygen diffusion and retention time measurements. More broadly, our work shows how processing conditions can be used to control oxygen transport characteristics in amorphous materials without long-range crystal order.

Morphological analysis of the human earcanal deformations during face-related activities

Ear-related technologies are spreading in our daily life and have become essential in several applications. The comfort, retention and battery life of in-ear devices can be substantially improved by considering the dynamic behavior of the earcanal. A better understanding of the earcanal dynamic motion would not only result in the improved fit and performance of earpieces but could also pave the way to harvest energy from these movements to power future ear-related technologies. The contours of the left and right ears of 18 healthy subjects during closed mouth and 4 activities (mouth opening, turning head left, raising eyebrows and smiling) were discretized. Eight parameters were analyzed to investigate the possible relation between each of these face-related activities and the radial and axial deformations of the earcanal. The largest significant deformations in reference to the closed-mouth geometry were observed during mouth-opening and smiling at the earcanal entrance and between the two bends.

The Originality of Digital Evidence and the Retention of Seized Digital Devices by Law Enforcement Officers in South Africa

Information and communication technology (ICT) devices, including mobile phones, laptops, computers and data storage mediums, such as memory sticks, are being seized daily by law enforcement agents. These devices are seized for different reasons in terms of the provisions of sections 21 to 23 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 and now, in terms of the provisions of sections 28 and 29 of the Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020. The seizure and extended retention of such devices by law enforcement can have a devastating impact on businesses and individuals. In virtually all cases, the main objective of seizing an ICT device is to secure its data for purposes of investigation and the collection of evidence. This excludes, inter alia, cases where a device contains contraband and cannot be handed back to the suspect or in a case where circumstances justify forfeiture to the state. This article is limited to cases where the physical device has no evidential value. It is contended that the content of the evidential data and the requirement of originality on an ICT device is met by scientifically created forensic duplicates of the data, which negate law enforcement from unnecessary seizure and retaining the original device. The authors contend that ICT devices should only be seized in situations where a forensic duplicate of the evidential data cannot be created on the scene and, if seized, the evidential data should be forensically duplicated, and the original device returned within a pre-determined period. An extension of the pre-determined period should only be granted by a magistrate upon application. It is recommended that the subject be researched further, to arrive at a reasonable, pre-determined period, and that the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977 and Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020 be amended accordingly.

Electronic Synapses Enabled by an Epitaxial SrTiO3‐δ / Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 Ferroelectric Field‐Effect Memristor Integrated on Silicon

AbstractSynapses play a vital role in information processing, learning, and memory formation in the brain. By emulating the behavior of biological synapses, electronic synaptic devices hold the promise of enabling high‐performance, energy‐efficient, and scalable neuromorphic computing. Ferroelectric memristive devices integrate the characteristics of both ferroelectric and memristive materials and present a far‐reaching potential as artificial synapses. Here, it is reported on a new ferroelectric device on silicon, a field‐effect memristor, consisting of an epitaxial ultrathin ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 film sandwiched between an epitaxial highly doped oxide semiconductor SrTiO3‐δ and a top metal. Upon a low voltage of less than 2 V, the field‐effect modulation in the semiconductor enables to access multiple states. The device works in a large time domain ranging from milliseconds down to tens of nanoseconds. By gradually switching the polarization by identical pulses, the ferroelectric diode devices can dynamically adjust the synaptic strength to mimic short‐ and long‐term memory plasticity. Ionic contributions due to redox processes in the oxide semiconductor beneficially influence the device operation and retention.

RETRACTED: Résultats à long terme de la kératoprothèse de Boston de type I au Canada

To evaluate long-term visual outcomes of Boston type I keratoprosthesis (KPro) surgery and identify risk factors for visual failure. Single surgeon retrospective cohort study including 85 eyes of 74 patients who underwent KPro implantation to treat severe ocular surface disease, including limbal stem cell deficiency, postinfectious keratitis, aniridia and chemical burns. Procedures were performed at the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal from October 2008 to May 2012. All patients with at least 5 years of follow-up were included in the analysis, including eyes with repeated KPro. Main outcome measures were visual acuity (VA), visual failure, defined as a sustained VA worse than the preoperative VA, postoperative complications, and device retention. Mean follow-up was 7.2±1.3 years (±SD). Mean VA was 2.1±0.7 (logarithm of minimal angle resolution) preoperatively and 1.9±1.2 at last follow-up. In total, 2.4% of patients had VA better than 20/200 preoperatively vs. 36.5% at last follow-up. Maintenance of improved postoperative VA was seen in 61.8% of eyes at 7 years. Preoperative factors associated with visual failure were known history of glaucoma (HR=2.7 [1.2 to 5.9], P=0.02) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (HR=7.3 [2.5 to 21.4], P<0.01). Cumulative 8-year complication rates were 38.8% retroprosthetic membrane formation, 25.9% hypotony, 23.5% new onset glaucoma, 17.6% retinal detachment, 8.2% device extrusion and 5.9% endophthalmitis. The majority (91.8%) of eyes retained the device 8 years after implantation. Nearly two-thirds of patients exhibited improved VA 7 years after KPro implantation. Preoperative risk factors for visual failure were known glaucoma and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Performance, safety, and biocompatibility of a novel PFO closure device in a long-term porcine model

BackgroundAs the catheter-based device closure of the patent foramen ovale (PFO) is expanding, novel devices aim to address the limitations of first-generation occluders (e.g. bulk, erosion, dislodgment). The second-generation device from Encore Medical (Eagan, MN, USA) features an articulating frame structure which allows the device to better conform to atrial anatomies, has lower disc thickness and metal mass/surface area, and is fully retrievable at any point in the procedure. The aim of the study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a novel low-profile, fully retrievable, Encore PFO closure device in the animal model. MethodsSix swine underwent implantation of the novel PFO occluder under fluoroscopic and intra-cardiac echocardiography guidance and survived for 140 days. Interim transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was conducted on Day 29. Following terminal angiography and TTE at 140 days, the hearts were subjected to gross and histopathologic analysis. ResultsAll animals were successfully implanted and survived for 140 days. Interim TTE revealed proper device retention with no blood flow across the septum or thrombus in any of the animals. X-ray and pathology results showed preserved implant integrity with no fractures, and complete integration of the devices into the septum with complete re-endothelialization and nearly complete coverage by a mature, relatively thin neoendocardium. No surface fibrin deposition or thrombosis was reported. ConclusionsIn the standard porcine model, device retention and biocompatibility remained favorable following structural and functional device modifications exemplified by the second-generation PFO occluder from Encore Medical, including marked reduction of metal mass.

Multilevel resistive switching memory in lead-free double perovskite La_{2}NiFeO_{6} films

Dense and flat La_{2}NiFeO_{6} (LNFO) films were fabricated on the indium tin oxide-coated glass (ITO/glass) substrate by sol–gel method. The bipolar resistive switching behavior (BRS) could be maintained in 100 cycles and remained after 30 days, indicating that the LNFO-based RS device owned good memory stability. Surprisingly, the multilevel RS characteristics were firstly observed in the Au/LNFO/ITO/glass device. The high resistance states (HRSs) and low resistance state (LRS) with the maximum ratio of sim 500 could be remained stably in 900 s and 130 cycles, demonstrating the fine retention and endurance ability of this LNFO-based RS device. The BRS behavior of Au/LNFO/ITO/glass devices primarily obeyed the SCLC mechanism controlled by oxygen vacancies (OVs) dispersed in the LNFO layer. Under the external electric field, injected electrons were captured or discharged by OVs during trapping or detrapping process in the LNFO layer. Thus, the resistive state switched between HRS and LRS reversibly. Moreover, the modulation of Schottky-like barrier formed at the Au/LNFO interface was contributed to the resistive states switchover. It was related to the change in OVs located at the dissipative region near the Au/LNFO interface. The multilevel RS ability of LNFO-based devices in this work provides an opportunity for researching deeply on the high density RS memory in lead-free double perovskite oxides-based devices.

Initial retention force of three attachment systems for implant retained-mandibular overdentures: An in vitro study.

To evaluate and compare the initial retention force of three resilient unsplinted attachment systems for implant-retained mandibular overdentures: two cylindrical attachment systems (Locator R-Tx® and Novaloc®), and one ball attachment system (Ball System). For each attachment system, initial retention is measured as the average of the maximal dislodging forces during 10 insertion-removal cycles. For the Ball System, three activation degrees of the matrix are included versus four and six color-coded retention devices for the Locator R-Tx® and the Novaloc®, respectively, to represent the complete regular retention devices panel. For each retention device or activation degree, eight samples are tested. The initial retention range is similar between the Ball System (7.7 ± 3.4 N - 19.9 ± 4.6 N) and the Novaloc® (2.0 ± 0.5 N - 18.9 ± 1.4 N) and broader for the Locator R-Tx® (3.3 ± 5.0 N - 60.2 ± 6.0 N). In each attachment system, the initial retention of each retention device is significantly different from the others, except for the two most retentive Novaloc® ones. Retention devices were also classified according to their initial retention (low, medium, and maximum). In each retention group, the Novaloc® and the Ball System provided similar retention values lower than the Locator R-Tx®. Most of the retention devices tested provided an initial retention force of over 5 N for all three attachment systems. The Locator R-Tx® had the most comprehensive range, and the Novaloc® seemed to provide the most reproducible values, unlike the Ball System due to the activation required by the operator.
