An assessment of the impact of commercial land use on residential housing. A case study of Auchi, Edo State

Auchi’s strategic location as a commercial hub has led to a significant expansion of its economy, resulting in a complex interplay between residential living conditions and economic development. The goal of this study was to determine how commercial activity affects residential housing in Auchi in order to raise the standard of housing there. In order to raise Auchi’s housing quality, this study aims to evaluate how commercial activity affects residential housing. In order to accomplish this goal, the following goals were taken into account: figuring out why residential housing in Auchi was converted to commercial use; figuring out what mixed-use housing Auchi has; figuring out what commercial activity is currently taking place on the city’s stock of residential housing; figuring out how these commercial activities affect Auchi’s residential housing; and figuring out the overall effects of commercial activity on Auchi’s residential housing. 155 questionnaires were distributed to various study areas’ quarters as part of a quantitative research methodology. The basic percentage method was employed to analyze the gathered data. The research findings indicate that although commercial activities have created job opportunities and drawn many individuals and families to Auchi, there are drawbacks as well. Firstly, there is an increasing demand for space, which results in the conversion of residential properties into commercial establishments. This reduces the supply of residential housing for locals, causing a shortage and an increase in housing prices. Based on the research’s findings, the following recommendations were made: the government should enact laws regulating property prices and rentals to ensure that they stay within the reach of locals; collaborate with private developers to construct affordable housing units in Auchi in order to alleviate the city’s housing scarcity; enforce laws governing noise pollution in order to reduce disturbances caused by commercial activity in residential areas; and promote mixed-use development in Auchi, which enables locals to live close to places of employment while preserving their ability to balance their personal and professional lives.

Housing tenure and acute lower respiratory tract infection admissions in two Scottish birth cohorts

Abstract Introduction Early-life acute lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) have been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Despite young children spending much of their time at home, the contribution of home ownership status, on LRTI hospital admissions is unknown. Objectives To estimate the association between housing tenure and the odds of LRTI hospitalization in children <2 years in two birth cohorts. Methods De-identified Scottish birth records were linked to maternal Census data (2001 and 2011) and to hospital admission data to construct two birth cohorts (Cohort 1 (C1), born 2000-2002; Cohort 2 (C2), 2010-2012). Using logistic regression we estimated the association of housing tenure (owned, social rented, private rented, rent-free) with the odds of LRTI hospital admission, before and after adjustment for maternal age, residential area, and maternal qualification level. Results Over the 2-year follow-up, there were 14,833 LRTI admissions in 12,527 children (10,832 children had 1 LRTI admission and 1,695 >1 LRTI admission). 75.6 % of all LRTI admissions were due to bronchiolitis. In C1 and C2, 4.0% and 5.3% children, respectively, had one or more LRTI admission. Compared to children living in owned housing, the odds of LRTI admission were higher in children living in social rented housing (C1: Odds ratio=1.40, 95% confidence interval: 1.31-1.49; C2: 1.23, 1.16-1.31), private rented (C1:1.24, 1.11,1.39; C2: 1.14, 1.06-1.21), and rent-free housing (C1: 1.53, 1.35,1.74; C2: 1.04, 0.80-1.36) after confounder adjustment. Conclusions We found an association between non-owned housing and higher odds of LRTI admission which was more marked in C1 than in C2. Further research is warranted to unpick the mechanisms underlying the association between housing tenure and LRTI admission. Interventions to prevent LRTI admissions could usefully target children living in non-owned housing. Key messages • This study demonstrates the value of administrative and health data linkage in improving our understanding of how socio-environmental factors might impact children’s respiratory health. • Children living in social and private rented housing (compared to owned housing) have a higher risk of LRTI hospital admission and could benefit the most from LRTI-lowering interventions.

What Makes a Home.Evaluating a Novel Low Support Homeless Accommodation Model Using Co-design Methods

Abstract Background Homelessness is a global challenge, with a prevalence of 4%; the problem is underestimated due to limitations in data collection. In Ireland, 1% of the population, including children, adults, and families, experience homelessness due to housing shortages and systemic complexities. Homeless accommodation is defined as emergency and temporary; the wording is used interchangeably. The ETHOS typology of homelessness comprises two dimensions - housing-focused and support-focused. Supports range from high to low levels. This study evaluated an emergency housing accommodation with low support to assess its feasibility and impact. Methods Previous residents of an urban residential area with low support [introduced in August 2021] and key stakeholders, including policymakers and health and social care professionals, were invited to collaborate in a half-day co-design workshop [February 2024]. The workshop modified Stanford D’s five-stage design thinking processes to consider ‘How might we harness strengths and abilities to create a home and beyond’. Qualitative data were captured on flip charts, post-its, and via photographs over three rounds of activities following initial reflection regarding 1) identifying emerging challenges, 2) exploring potential solutions, and 3) considering resources for advocacy and success. Results Data analyses from 16 participants highlight 1)Personal insights: silence, freedom in decision-making, feeling overwhelmed, valuing independence and understanding accommodation transitions; 2)Organisational insights: developing and promoting independent skills, managing resident preferences and personalities, balancing regulations within emergency accommodation, and staff training. Space was critical in fostering therapeutic well-being and a sense of home environment. Conclusions Effective organisational structures are required to facilitate coherent transfers and transitions. Using co-design methods enabled real-world partnerships and engagement. Key messages • Homelessness is a significant public health challenge, and a model of low support emergency accommodation has value in supporting transition through and out of services. • Engaging with people with lived experience of homelessness is essential for developing supported accommodation models.

Vaccine conspiracy beliefs are the main determinant of adult vaccine hesitancy

Abstract Background Many factors influence the level of vaccine hesitancy. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that conspiracy beliefs are an important element of overwhelming misinformation. The main aim of the study was to assess the relationship between vaccine hesitancy (VH) and vaccine conspiracy beliefs (VCB) in Polish society. Methods The analysis was conducted using data from an online survey of 2189 Internet users conducted in November 2021. Uni- (ULRM) and multivariable linear regression (MLRM) models were developed for vaccine hesitancy as a dependent variable. The independent variables included VCB score (VCBS), health (HL) and e-health literacy (eHL), Internet (IU) and social media use (SMU), political views (PV), and sociodemographic variables. Results The VCBS, eHL, HL, age, income, vocational and marital status, place of residence, PV, IU, and SMU were significant predictors of VH in ULRMs. A significant relationship with VH was maintained in MLRM for all independent variables enlisted earlier, apart from age, income, and vocational status. Respondents with higher VCBS were more likely to have higher VH (B, 95%CI: 0.38, 0.37-0.40). Those with undetermined HL had higher VH than persons with sufficient HL (B, 95%CI: 0.13, 0.06-0.20). A higher level of eHL predicted a lower level of VH (B, 95%CI: -0.01, -0.012 - -0.03). Lower IU and higher SMU were associated with higher VH (B, 95%CI: 0.16, 0.02-0.30, and 0.10, 0.03-0.17, respectively). Supporters of far right-wing party showed higher HV than supporters of the governmental party (B, 95%CI: 0.16, 0.07-0.27). Finally, singles showed higher HV than married (B, 95%CI: 0.07, 0.01-0.13), and residents of small cities had higher HV than residents of rural areas (B, 95%CI: 0.08, 0.004-0.15). Conclusions The vaccine conspiracy beliefs play a major role in the development of VH. The interventions aimed at the change of antivaccination attitudes should address the problem of widespread conspiracy beliefs. Key messages • Conspiracy beliefs are an important determinant of attitudes toward vaccination. • The development of adequate digital health literacy may be a protective factor against vaccine hesitancy.

The very long-term risk of stroke after acute coronary syndrome and geographic differences. The ABC-10* study on heart disease

Abstract Background Little is known about the very long-term risk of stroke among acute coronary syndrome (ACS) survivors. Methods In this prospective study, we enrolled 535 ACS patients admitted to hospitals in three Italian provinces, discharged alive and followed for 24 years or death. The patient's residency was classified into three urban and three nearby rural areas. Results All patients completed the follow-up (6142 Perso-years). 85 (16%) patients suffered an acute stroke. Patients median age was 67 years, 70% were male, and 318 patients were residing in rural areas. Patients who had a stroke and those who had not shared most of the demographic and clinical characteristics. The incidence rate of overall stroke was 14/1000 person-year. Cox analyses showed older age (HR 3.13;95%CI 2.31-4.26), male gender (HR 1.88;95%CI 1.20-2.95), baseline diabetes (HR 2.25 95%CI 1.37-3.69), heart failure (HR 2.69;95%CI 1.71-4.24), and higher albumin/creatinine ratio (HR 1.75;95%CI 1.33-2.30) were all associated with an increased risk of stroke. while higher baseline eGFR, reperfusion, statin and beta-blockers treatment during follow-up were associated with a decreased risk; HR (0.55 (95%CI 0.42-0.72), 0.45(95%CI 0.29-0.71), 0.21(95%CI 0.13-0.34), and 0.37(95%CI 0.23-0.57), respectively). In the multivariate analysis, only older age (HR1.55;95%CI 1.08-2.21; p=0.02) was an independent predictor of stroke while statin treatment was independently associated with a lower risk (HR 0.35;95% CI 0.21-0.58; p<0.0001). However, all these variables did not predict the risk of stroke in competing risk regression analysis where death was treated as the competing event. A sub-analysis of the 43 patients who had a fatal stroke (FS) revealed 7/1000 person-year FS IR. The Cox regression and competing risk analyses of predictors of FS showed similar results. Interestingly, we observed an association between geographic areas of residence and the long-term FS risk as the risk increased going from rural to urban (HR 2.08;95%CI 1.14-3.80; p=0.02) areas and from north to middle and south provinces (HR 1.47;95%CI 1.00-2.15; p=0.04) in the univariate Cox regression analysis. Results kept true using multivariate Cox and Competing risk regression models. Conclusion This analysis reveals the significant urban-rural difference in the very long–term risk of fatal stroke among unselected ACS patients which highlights the importance of implementing a preventive policy based on area-specific knowledge.

Socioeconomic inequalities in avoidable mortality: results from the Italian nationwide cohort

Abstract Background Inequalities in avoidable mortality have been well evaluated in many European countries. We aimed to assess the association between socioeconomic status and avoidable mortality in Italy. Methods The nationwide closed cohort of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing was followed up for 2012- 2019 mortality. Outcomes of preventable and of treatable mortality were evaluated among people aged 30-74. Exposures were education level and residence macro area (North-West, North-East, Center, South-Islands). Adjusted mortality rate ratios (MRRs) were estimated through multivariate quasi-Poisson regression models, by sex and group of causes, taking into account age at death and macro area of residence. Relative index of inequalities (RII) was estimated for preventable, treatable, and non-avoidable mortality and for some specific causes. Results The cohort consisted of 35,708,459 residents (48.8% men, 17.5% aged 65-74), 34% with a high school diploma, 33.5% living in the South-Islands; 1,127,760 deaths were observed, of which 65.2% for avoidable causes (40.4% preventable and 24.9% treatable). Inverse trends between education level and mortality were observed for all causes; comparing the least with the most educated groups, a strong association was observed for preventable (males MRR = 2.39; females MRR = 1.65) and for treatable causes of death (males MRR = 1.93; females MRR = 1.45). Highest RII were observed for HIV/AIDS and alcohol-related diseases (both sexes), drug-related diseases and tuberculosis (males), and diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and renal failure (females). Higher risks of preventable and of treatable mortality were found for those living in the South-Islands. Conclusions We documented relevant socioeconomic inequalities in avoidable mortality in Italy, especially in the Southern regions. They represent a possible missed gain in health and suggest a reassessment of priorities and definition of health targets with the lens of equity. Key messages • An inverse socioeconomic gradient in avoidable mortality was observed in Italy, both for preventable and for treatable mortality, with geographical heterogeneity. • Greatest social disparities were found in mortality for causes strongly associated with risk behavior and for which it is possible to identify risk factors on which to intervene.

Influence of Spatially Varied Soil Property on Train-Induced Soil-to-Column Vibration Transmission

The proximity of residential areas to traffic corridors has raised concerns among researchers regarding train-induced vibrations. Experimental studies have consistently shown variations in train-induced vibrations, which can be attributed to uncertainties and randomness in both the vibration source and propagation path. This study aims to investigate the influence factors and quantify their contributions to train-induced vibration variations through a comprehensive field measurement campaign and numerical simulations using random finite element models. During the field measurements, vibrations were recorded at the ground surface and the column base for a total of 53 passbys of the same type of metro train on parallel rail lines. Variations in train-induced vibrations caused by the source-to-receiver distance and spatially varied soil properties were analyzed and compared. Specifically, the investigation focused on the spatial variation of soil properties including elastic modulus, density and damping ratio in the topsoil and the second layer of clay, while simultaneously considering the influence of spatial variations of all three soil properties on the transmission of train-induced vibrations from the surface soil to the structural columns. Understanding these variations is crucial for the probabilistic assessment of building serviceability during train passbys. The findings of this research provide valuable insights for probabilistic prediction and evaluation of building vibration comfort.

A Methodological Framework for High-Resolution Surface Urban Heat Island Mapping: Integration of UAS Remote Sensing, GIS, and the Local Climate Zoning Concept

The urban heat island effect (UHI) is among the major challenges of urban climate, which is continuously intensifying its impact on urban life and functioning. Against the backdrop of increasingly prolonged heatwaves observed in recent years, practical questions about adaptation measures in cities are growing—questions that traditional meteorological monitoring can hardly answer adequately. On the other hand, UHI has long been the focus of research interest, but due to the technological complexity of providing accurate spatially referenced data at high spatial resolution and the requirement to survey at strictly defined parts of the day, information provision is becoming a major challenge. This is one of the main reasons why UHI research results are less often used directly in urban spatial planning. However, advances in geospatial technologies, including unmanned aerial systems (UASs), are providing more and more reliable tools that can be applied to achieve better and higher-quality information resources that adequately characterize the UHI phenomenon. This paper presents a developed and tested methodology for the rapid and efficient assessment and mapping of the effects of surface urban heat island (SUHI). It is entirely based on the integrated use of data from unmanned aerial systems (UAS)-based remote sensing methods, including thermal photogrammetry and GIS-based analysis methods. The study follows the understanding that correct SUHI research depends on a proper understanding of the urban geosystem, its spatial and structural heterogeneity, and its functional systems, which in turn can only be achieved by supporting the research process with accurate and reliable information resources. In this regard, the possibilities offered by the proposed methodological scheme for efficient geospatial registration of SUHI variations at the microscale, including the calculation of intra-urban SUHI intensity, are discussed in detail. The methodology builds on classical approaches for using local climate zoning (LCZ), adding capabilities for precise delineation of individual zone types and for geostatistical characterization of the urban surface heat island (SUHI). Finally, the proposed scheme is based on state-of-the-art technological tools that provide flexible and automated capabilities to investigate the phenomenon at microscales, including by enabling flexible observation of its dynamics in terms of heat wave manifestation and evolution. Results are presented from a series of sequential tests conducted on the largest residential area in Bulgaria’s capital city, Sofia, in terms of area and population, over a relatively long period from 2021 to 2024.

Green and blue spaces residential exposure over childhood and multimorbidity in adolescence

Abstract Background Previous studies have explored associations of exposure to natural spaces with specific adverse health outcomes over childhood. However, knowledge is lacking on its effects on multimorbidity, defined as the co-occurrence of two or more diseases in the same individual. We aimed to assess the associations between exposure to green and blue spaces, at multiple time points and through trajectories over childhood, with multimorbidity in early adolescence. Methods In 2388 children from the Generation XXI birth cohort, we assessed, at birth, 4, 7 and 10 years, the residential greenness through the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the distance from the child’s residence to the closest green and blue space, and the presence of green and blue space (>5,000m²) within 300m distance from the child’s residence. We identified, from birth to 10 years, longitudinal trajectories of exposure to green and blue spaces, using latent class mixed models. At 13 years, participants were classified as having 0, 1 or ≥ 2 cardiometabolic, respiratory and/or neurodevelopmental adverse health outcomes. Adjusted multinomial logistic regression models were used. Results The prevalence of multimorbidity at 13 years was 43%, with overweight/obesity (35%), allergies and asthma (30%), and dyslipidemia (26%) as the most common adverse health outcomes. We observed that the presence of green spaces > 5,000m² within a distance of 300m at birth, 4, 7, and 10 years was associated with lower odds of developing multimorbidity (Odds Ratio (OR) [95% CI] 0.55 [0.32-0.95]; 0.52 [0.32-0.84]; 0.51 [0.32-0.82]; 0.51 [0.32-0.80], respectively). No other significant associations were observed. Conclusions Green spaces around the child’s residence seem to have a protective effect on the development of multimorbidity at 13 years. These findings reinforce the importance of urban design, and the creation of green spaces close to residential areas to optimize health across childhood and adolescence. Key messages • The prevalence of multimorbidity at 13 years is high and worrying. • Increasing accessibility to green spaces might decrease the risk of multimorbidity in adolescence.

Infectious disease prevention among internally displaced people: Perspectives from Lviv, Ukraine

Abstract Background The ongoing war in Ukraine has increased the risk of infection spikes, especially among internally displaced people. The healthcare challenges in the war context necessitate teaching the population of preventative measures, which have become the primary vector of the activities of the Ukrainian Regional Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Objectives The research aimed to highlight the activities of the Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in relation to internally displaced people. Methods The research project analyzed the incidence rate of infectious diseases and vaccination coverage data among the population and internally displaced people in the region. The data were collected from monthly reports of CDC’s departments and alert messages sent by primary care institutions to the CDC. Results According to the Single register of internally displaced people (IDP), 13% of internally displaced people were permanently staying in the Lviv region (the second place was Zakarpattia region - 9% of IDP, and the third was Kyiv - 7% of IDP). In the Lviv region, 237,000 people registered as forcibly displaced. Total, over 700, 000 people are in the area, including the unregistered and 68,000 children. In 2022-2023, the morbidity rates among IDPs did not exceed the rates among the general population in the area. Each IDP residence place had its physician; 11 thousand IDPs were vaccinated, and 3,235 of those were children. In general, 46 mobile medical brigades worked on-site in the Lviv region. Only one spike of gastrointestinal infection was registered. CDC employees provided lectures and workshops on hygiene and food storage in 56 IDP residence places. Conclusions The review results show that coordination between CDCs, local physicians, and mobile medical brigades in the IDP residence areas prevents outbreaks of infectious diseases and swiftly responds to emerging threats. Key messages • The tragic events in Ukraine resulted in healthcare access issues. Lviv CDC, fighting at its own forefront, quickly assessed the risks and efficiently managed the potential hazards. • The Lviv region remains one of the biggest hubs in Ukraine for the temporary residence of internally displaced people, with CDC employees ensuring that preventive measures are effectively carried out.

Factors influencing delay in cancer diagnosis: a qualitative study in Chile, Colombia and Ecuador

Abstract Background Although the greatest delays in cancer diagnosis in Latin America occur in the provider interval, little is known about related factors. This study, part of EquityCancer-LA, aims to analyse the factors influencing access to cancer diagnosis from key stakeholders’ perspective in healthcare networks of Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador. Methods A qualitative, descriptive-interpretative study was conducted in two networks per country in 2023, using semi-structured individual interviews (n = 114) with a criterion sample of primary care (PC) (n = 40) and secondary/tertiary hospitals (n = 44) health/administrative professionals, managers, and policy makers (n = 30). Thematic analysis was performed, segmented by country. Results The analysis revealed interacting factors that cause cumulative delays, with differences between countries. In all, participants identified networks structural characteristics (deficits in diagnostic resources; geographical accessibility), organizational factors (long waiting times, especially after referral), and limited knowledge of PC doctors, which all lead to delayed referral. In Chile and Colombia, barriers related to care rationing/prioritization policies hampered access to tests, and in Chile, increased delays for non-prioritized conditions. Barriers related to the health system organization also emerged: in Chile, problems related to private services subcontracting and the voucher system for using them; in Colombia, the management of care by insurers (authorizations; fragmented and short-term contracting of providers); and in Ecuador, health system underfunding. The barriers mostly affected the elderly, those with low socioeconomic status, limited social support networks, and rural areas residents. Conclusions The results reveal significant barriers in access to timely cancer diagnosis, which can and should be addressed with specific cancer diagnosis policies and general measures that strengthen public healthcare systems and networks. Key messages • Key health system factors influencing provider delays in cancer diagnosis are identified. • Evidence is provided for the design of policies to improve timely cancer diagnosis in studied countries.

Educational intervention to raise awareness and foster responsibility for Chagas disease risk factors in the rural community of Texca, Guerrero, Mexico.”

Problem consideredChagas disease is a vector-borne parasitic infection considered of public health importance. For farmers and residents of endemic areas, vectors are part of their day to day life and they often lack awareness of their infectious potential, so the risk they pose is not a main concern in their lives. So far, existing measures set in place to eradicate the vector have not been effective long-term. MethodsIn this study, a one-year program was designed and implemented to inform and assess the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of 81 parents or heads of household regarding the risk of transmission and prevention of Trypanosoma cruzi infection. The program aimed to raise awareness of the crucial role they play in the prevention and control of vectors associated with Chagas disease. ResultsAfter educational interventions, a notable increase in the percentage of knowledge regarding the parasite, transmission factors, and Chagas disease was observed. ConclusionThis might suggest that properly implementing educational interventions within the population, with training from health professionals and through public programs, will allow for the reduction of infection risks. In the long term, it could significantly reduce the incidence of the disease in the region and state.

Dynamic Simulation of Carbon Emission Peak in City-Scale Building Sector: A Life-Cycle Approach Based on LEAP-SD Model

Systematically predicting carbon emissions in the building sector is crucial for formulating effective policies and plans. However, the timing and potential peak emissions from urban buildings remain unclear. This research integrates socio-economic, urban planning, building technology, and energy consumption factors to develop a LEAP-SD model using Shenzhen as a case study. The model considers the interrelationship between socio-economic development and energy consumption, providing more realistic scenario simulations to predict changes in carbon emissions within the urban building sector. The study investigates potential emission peaks and peak times of buildings under different population and building area development scenarios. The results indicate that achieving carbon peaking by 2030 is challenging under a business as usual (BAU) scenario. However, a 10% greater reduction in energy intensity compared to BAU could result in peaking around 2030. The simulation analysis highlights the significant impact of factors such as population growth rate, per capita residential building area, and energy consumption per unit building area and the need for a comprehensive analysis. It provides more realistic scenario simulations that not only enhance theories and models for predicting carbon emissions but also offer valuable insights for policymakers in establishing effective reduction targets and strategies.

Development of over 30-years of high spatiotemporal resolution air pollution models and surfaces for California

California’s diverse geography and meteorological conditions necessitate models capturing fine-grained patterns of air pollution distribution. This study presents the development of high-resolution (100 m) daily land use regression (LUR) models spanning 1989–2021 for nitrogen dioxide (NO2), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and ozone (O3) across California. These machine learning LUR algorithms integrated comprehensive data sources, including traffic, land use, land cover, meteorological conditions, vegetation dynamics, and satellite data. The modeling process incorporated historical air quality observations utilizing continuous regulatory, fixed site saturation, and Google Streetcar mobile monitoring data. The model performance (adjusted R2) for NO2, PM2.5, and O3 was 84 %, 65 %, and 92 %, respectively.Over the years, NO2 concentrations showed a consistent decline, attributed to regulatory efforts and reduced human activities on weekends. Traffic density and weather conditions significantly influenced NO2 levels. PM2.5 concentrations also decreased over time, influenced by aerosol optical depth (AOD), traffic density, weather, and land use patterns, such as developed open spaces and vegetation. Industrial activities and residential areas contributed to higher PM2.5 concentrations. O3 concentrations exhibited no significant annual trend, with higher levels observed on weekends and lower levels associated with traffic density due to the scavenger effect. Weather conditions and land use, such as commercial areas and water bodies, influenced O3 concentrations.To extend the prediction of daily NO2, PM2.5, and O3 to 1989, models were developed for predictors such as daily road traffic, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI)–NO2, monthly AOD, and OMI-O3. These models enabled effective estimation for any period with known daily weather conditions.Longitudinal analysis revealed a consistent NO2 decline, regulatory-driven PM2.5 decreases countered by wildfire impacts, and spatially variable O3 concentrations with no long-term trend. This study enhances understanding of air pollution trends, aiding in identifying lifetime exposure for statewide populations and supporting informed policy decisions and environmental justice advocacy.

On the Selection of Workplace in the COVID-19 Era Using Attitudinal Factors

After two years of living with the threat of COVID-19 in Ontario, Canada, pre-pandemic circumstances returned. During the pandemic, we relied on ICT-based tools to carry out our daily tasks, and now we have reached a tipping point. Should we keep our new routines to benefit us in the future? Or should we return to our routines before the pandemic? This study utilized a travel survey to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on work activity-travel behavior and the persistence of new traditions in the post-pandemic era. The data for this study comes from a sample of 1,000 Greater Toronto Area residents who participated in a web-based survey in July, 2021, when Ontario began the third phase of reopening. This paper investigates work activity and workplace selection in more depth. Using factor analysis, a collection of latent attitudinal variables was identified. An integrated choice and latent variable model estimated the influential systematic and latent variables on the perceived workplace selection in the post-pandemic condition. The results showed that 71% of responders want to continue working from home at least once weekly after the pandemic. The preferred frequency of telecommuting in the post-pandemic period was positively correlated with education level, positive feelings about telecommuting experience, and certain occupation types, while negatively associated with age.

Empowering Maternal Choice: Exploring Factors Influencing Early Postpartum Contraceptive Adoption Intention Among Pregnant Women in Northeast Ethiopia.

Despite progress in access to family planning services in many sub-Saharan African countries in recent decades, advances in early postpartum contraceptive adoption remain low, and the unmet need for early postpartum contraceptives is high. According to the Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey report, early postpartum modern contraceptive method uptake is still unacceptably low in Ethiopia. This study aimed to determine the magnitude of intention to adopt early postpartum modern contraceptive methods and its associated factors among pregnant women in Dessie and Kombolcha town zones, northeast Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was deployed from 15 January-15 February 2023, in the Dessie and Kombolcha zones, northeast Ethiopia, among pregnant women. The study involved 780 pregnant women using the cluster sampling technique. A census was conducted in 20 randomly selected clusters to identify eligible pregnant women. Actual data were collected home-to-home in the community through face-to-face interviews. Data were collected by Open Data Kit (ODK) and exported to STATA 17 for analysis. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed, and the goodness of the model was checked by Hosmer-Lemeshow's test statistic and rock curve. An adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval and p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The study revealed that 49.6% of pregnant women lack autonomy and 50% lack knowledge about early postpartum contraception, with participants' wealth index status ranging from rich (36.6%) to poor (33.2%). The study found that 75.8% of pregnant women intended to adopt early postpartum modern contraceptive methods early after childbirth. After controlling the potential confounders, mother's age (AOR = 6.2 [2.6-14.6], birth interval (AOR = 2.5 [1.6-3.7]), have paid work (AOR = 1.9 [1.3-2.8]), health facility from home (AOR = 2.6 [1.5-4.4]), last delivery Place (AOR = 2.4 [1.1-5.7]), knowledge on (AOR = 1.5 [1.1-2.1]), and antenatal care follow-up (AOR = 1.9 [1.2-3.3]) were significant associated factors of intention to uptake early postpartum modern contraceptive methods among pregnant women. The study found that 75% of the participants had the intention to adopt contraceptive methods during the early postpartum period. Identified factors influencing this intention were age, birth interval, women's employment status, area of residence, distance to health facilities, last delivery place, knowledge of early postpartum modern contraception, gravidity, and antenatal care follow-up. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to address these factors, framing the intended users and enabling access to early adoption of postpartum contraceptive methods.

Particulate Matter Production from Prescribed Burns in the Chicagoland Area

Prescribed burns are a land management tool currently used to aid in fire mitigation and to promote desired plant species and reduce undesired species, which are often invasive species. Currently, there is a public stigma surrounding the negative effects of prescribed burns, which impacts their use near residential areas. There are also particular challenges of conducting prescribed burns in urban and suburban areas. A better understanding of these relatively small-scale prescribed burns and their impact on atmospheric chemistry and air quality can allow for better communication with the public about their positive impacts, as well as for the acknowledgement and quantification of their drawbacks. This study considers the particulate matter concentrations proximate to prescribed fires being conducted in the greater Chicago metropolitan area. We deployed low-cost sensors in the spring and fall of 2022 at four sites. Concentrations of particulate matter exceeded accepted human health exposure limits at locations that burn crews would experience, but levels quickly returned to baseline after the high-intensity phase of the burn. With the ever-expanding wildland–urban interface and increased efforts in ecological restoration, understanding the particulate matter emissions of prescribed fires conducted near populated areas can provide more data regarding air quality impacts. These impacts should be weighed against the ecological benefits of prescribed burns and potential air quality impacts from uncontrolled burns from ecosystems that are not treated with prescribed burns. Measuring air quality impacts can also inform fire management practices with the goal of reducing future emissions. With the very present effects of climate change, understanding baselines regarding prescribed fires can better equip future research and fire professionals in fighting fire with fire.

Spatial and temporal characterization of Aedes albopictus oviposition activity in candidate urban settings for sterile insect technique testing in La Reunion Island

BackgroundUnderstanding of mosquito spatiotemporal dynamics is central to characterize candidate field sites for the sterile insect technique (SIT) testing, and is critical to the effective implementation and evaluation of pilot sterile male release programs. Here, we present a detailed description of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) egg-laying activity over a 6-year period in urban areas identified as potential SIT testing sites on Reunion Island.MethodWeekly entomological collections using ovitraps were carried out in residential and adjacent uninhabited habitats in two urban areas, Duparc and Bois Rouge, in the municipality of Sainte Marie, Reunion Island. Time-series data incorporating the frequency of positive ovitraps and the total number of eggs/ovitrap recorded each time at each locality during the study period from May 2013 to December 2018 were analyzed with multifaceted statistical approaches including descriptive statistics and spatiotemporal analyses incorporating the role of climatic factors on overall ovitrap productivity.ResultsDuring the ovitrap survey, the proportion of egg-positive ovitraps differed among study sites (χ2 = 50.21, df = 2, P < 0.001), being relatively lower in Duparc (89.5%) than in Bois-Rouges (95.3%) and the adjacent buffer zone (91.2%). Within each neighborhood, Ae. albopictus egg abundance varied by month in a roughly seasonal pattern marked by a single peak occurring more regularly February each year, a decline at the onset of the austral winter in July, followed by a period of lower ovitrap productivity in August and September. Fluctuation in both positivity rate and eggs densities per ovitraps were related to annual and seasonal variations in local temperature and rainfall (P < 0.001 in all cases). The spatial analysis also captured substantial between- and within-habitats heterogeneity, whereby the overall ovitrap productivity was higher in residential areas than in the buffer zone.ConclusionsCollectively, these results reveal that the distribution of Ae. albopictus oviposition activity is shaped by local habitat heterogeneity and seasonal climatic factors. Overall, this study provides baseline insights into the reproductive dynamics of Ae. albopictus, which would assist in planning locally tailored SIT interventions, while addressing concerns related to focal areas of high egg-laying intensity and potential immigration of females from natural areas.

Factors Related to mHealth App Use Among Japanese Workers: Cross-Sectional Survey.

Health care providers can make health guidance more effective by using mobile health technologies such as health apps. Although health care providers need to know who uses health apps, existing studies have yielded inconsistent results. The aim of the study was (1) to clarify the prevalence and patterns of health app use to improve health behaviors for preventing lifestyle-related diseases among Japanese workers and (2) to identify the associations among demographic characteristics, health behavior, and internet use and health app use by gender. Data were collected from a cross-sectional internet survey in 2023. In total, 2200 participants were included, with an even distribution of men and women in each age group aged 20 to 60 years. The participants were workers with smartphones and reported their gender, age, residence area, marital status, education, employment status, occupation, work pattern, diseases under treatment, health checkups, health guidance, health behaviors, internet use duration, and number of devices used. We asked about current and previous health app use for 1 month. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted by gender. Of the participants, 472 (21.5%) and 189 (8.6%) were current and previous health app users, respectively. Most current and previous health app users used features that record and track their physical activity and other health behaviors. Health app users-both men and women-were more likely to have health checkups (odds ratio [OR] 1.53, 95% CI 1.12-2.11 and OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.10-2.07, respectively), receive health guidance (OR 2.01, 95% CI 1.47-2.74 and OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.32-2.62, respectively), engage in regular physical activity (OR 2.57, 95% CI 1.91-3.47 and OR 1.94, 95% CI 1.41-2.67, respectively), use the internet for 120-179 minutes per day (OR 1.76, 95% CI 1.13-2.75 and OR 1.70, 95% CI 1.12-2.57, respectively), and were less likely to be older (50-59 years: OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.33-0.88 and OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.25-0.6, respectively, and 60-69 years: OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.22-0.62 and OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.28-0.77, respectively). According to gender, male health app users were more likely to be married (OR 1.69, 95% CI 1.23-2.33) and less likely to work in the security, agriculture, forestry, fishing, manufacturing, or transportation industries (OR 0.62, 95% CI 0.41-0.95). Female health app users were more likely to have a university education or higher (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.061-2.26), maintain an appropriate body weight (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.10-2.11), and use 3 or more devices (OR 2.13, 95% CI 1.41-3.23). Physical activity and health guidance are strong predictors of app use. Health care providers should assess the target populations' preferences for app use based on their characteristics, support their app use, and enhance the effectiveness of health guidance.
