Editorial: Inaugural Issue of the International Journal of Bridge Engineering, Management and Research (IJBEMR)

It is my pleasure to share with you the inaugural issue of the newly established International Journal of Bridge Engineering, Management and Research. The International Journal of Bridge Engineering, Management and Research (BER) is a fully open access online-only journal. It serves as a forum for the publication of scientific and technical papers related to all aspects of bridge engineering and management, including structural, seismic, hydraulic and geotechnical risk analysis, structural health monitoring, static and dynamic assessments, structural retrofitting, and resiliency enhancement. The journal also publishes research papers on tunnels focusing on the areas mentioned above. Technical research papers and case studies dealing with innovative technological or computational solutions to bridges and tunnels, as well as experimental methods and novel design and theoretical analysis procedures are strong candidates for publication in the journal. This inaugural issue features five high quality papers in bridge engineering. Through this issue, I am also inviting you to register with the journal and submit your research manuscripts to the journal. We are committed to expedited and thorough peer review and publication of your research.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Research in Communication Sciences and Disorders Journals: An Exploratory Survey of the Recent Literature.

Inspired by a preliminary survey of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) literature conducted by Friberg et al. (2014), the current study aimed to expand the original study's findings-that SoTL was rarely published in the communication sciences and disorders (CSD) literature from 2009 to 2013-to the subsequent 8-year period (2014-2021). The latter period was of particular relevance considering the dissolution of one American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)-affiliated publication and the addition of another non-ASHA-affiliated publication during that time. Ten peer-reviewed CSD journals and the articles published in them were identified via a survey of the literature that used narrowly defined criteria developed in collaboration with a librarian. Five trained CSD graduate student raters compared a definition of SoTL to article abstracts to determine whether each should have been categorized as SoTL. Part 1 of the study investigated an 8-year time span, Part 2 investigated the remaining nine journals in the subsequent 5 years, and Part 3 investigated publication rates of SoTL in Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders (TLCSD) alone. Part 1 of the study revealed that publication rates of SoTL were extremely low in the 10 surveyed CSD journals in the 8-year time span investigated. A similar and diminishing trend was found in Part 2. Even smaller percentages of journals were dedicated to SoTL. Part 3 confirmed that relatively large amounts of CSD-specific SoTL have been published in TLCSD since its inception in 2017. As of 2021, SoTL articles continued to be uncommonly published in CSD journals. Until recently, scholarly teachers attempting to apply SoTL in the classroom had limited resources. Beginning in 2017, TLCSD has provided an outlet for SoTL, whereas other CSD journals seem to have published less of it. Reform of publication, peer review, tenure, and promotion policies and procedures is called for so that SoTL might be included as a valid scientific endeavor.

This study aims to analyze the impact of monetary policy on Indonesia's international trade using a literature review approach. The monetary policy implemented by Bank Indonesia, particularly concerning interest rates, inflation, and the exchange rate of the rupiah, significantly affects the performance of international trade. This study collects, evaluates, and synthesizes information from various relevant literature sources, including scholarly journal articles, books, research reports, and policy documents. The findings indicate that interest rates influence the competitiveness of export products through production costs, controlled inflation boosts foreign direct investment flows, and exchange rate stability supports long-term business planning and investment. Effective monetary policy can help create a stable trade environment, enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the global market, and strengthen the country's economic position in the global supply chain.

Abstracts from the 19th International Congress of Nutrition and Dietetics 2024

Every four years the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations (ICDA) hosts the International Congress of Nutrition and Dietetics. (ICND). In 2024, the ICND was held June 12- 14 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Informed by the overarching theme of “Rise to the Challenge”, the comprehensive program covered a wide range of topics, sharing the best of applied science, practice and training experiences in the field of nutrition and dietetics. This special article in the Fall issue of the Canadian Journal of Dietetics Practice and Research contains all abstracts accepted for presentation at ICND 2024 (oral abstracts, poster presentations, expert lectures, panel discussions, and workshops). The abstract peer-review and selection process was completed by the ICND 2024 Scientific Committee. All abstracts are published exactly as submitted without further review by the journal Editor or publisher.

P157 THE USE OF PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH TO PROMOTE INCREASED CONSUMPTION OF VEGETABLES AMONG AFRICAN WOMEN WITH/AT RISK OF HYPERTENSION IN GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA

Background and objectives: Poor vegetable and fruit intake are reported in multiple studies of the South African population, especially among people with less income and lower educational status and it is a known risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as hypertension. “South Africa has one of the highest levels of hypertension globally, coupled with poor rates of diagnosis, treatment and control” Ware et al., (2019). It has been suggested that indigenous vegetables may aid in increasing vegetable intake, a recommendation of the South African Food Based Dietary Guidelines. As urbanisation and the nutrition transition increases in South Africa, the loss of indigenous knowledge and utilisation of indigenous vegetables is significant and is worse compared to countries such as Kenya and Tanzania. The aim of this study was to collaboratively promote the use of indigenous vegetables by African women in a peri-urban area with/at risk of hypertension with the goal of improving agency to increase vegetable intake. Methods: A qualitative participatory action research (PAR) methodology was utilised. African adult women with hypertension or at risk of hypertension were recruited from a local healthcare facility for a one year long project, with a total enrolment of 12-24 participants. Data collection included observations, focus groups, key informant interviews and the research journal of the researcher. Results: Participants worked collaboratively to co-construct relevant nutrition education materials, recipe development using local indigenous vegetables, clinic open day and a seminar for other community members. There was greater uptake of vegetable gardening at home and at the local community centre. Conclusions: using PAR methodologies to address inadequate vegetable intake and promote the use of indigenous vegetable crops may benefit personal agency which includes an individual's perceptions about how much control they have over themselves and their environment, in order to carry out a certain behaviour; self-confidence or efficacy; the ability to self-regulate and monitor behaviour and the ability to identify and use good coping skills.

Meta-Analysis of AI Research in Journalism

The use of artificial intelligence tools in newsrooms is revolutionary and controversial as well. Despite the promising opportunities provided by AI to enhance digital journalism practice, it also raises several legal, professional, and ethical considerations. Research about AI in Arab media is a promising area of interest that increasingly attracts scholars. However, there is a need for systematic and purposive growth in future research about AI and media, that considers the socio-cultural and economic contexts of countries and meets the priorities and needs of media organizations. Accordingly, this paper provides researchers with an overview of the main challenges and debates in the field of AI and journalism studies. This study applies a systematic review of a sample of English written studies from 2014 to 2022 about the implications, challenges and considerations of using AI in newsrooms. Transmission Channel of Agriculture Food Import Tariff to Stunting Prevalence

Increases in food prices affect poverty in a way that poor consumer is harmed due to the high proportion of their budget they spent on food. Stunting prevalence might be instigated by several factors such as access to food and nutrition intake, genetic and environment. This research aims to analyse the effect of food import tariffs towards the stunting prevalence of children aged under 5 (five) across districts in Indonesia, and we explore the indirect relationship between stunting prevalence and trade policy. This research uses quantitative descriptive research methods, utilizing both primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained through the distribution of questionnaires, followed by Focus Group. Secondary data were obtained from relevant institutions such as the Central Statistics Agency, research journals, and related books. The method of data analysis in the study uses quantitative analysis with a mathematical model. The results showed that tariffs can reduce the consumption of foods that serve in the intake of dietary nutrients such as calories, protein and fat. As a result, food intake affects the prevalence of stunting. Trade liberalisation can have a beneficial impact on child health. The effects of trade liberalisation on stunting through the food channel include: a) trade has a significant effect on calorie, protein, and fat intake, b) intake of these nutrients has a significant effect on child stunting.

Minorities, Women, and Radicals in the Discipline of Economics

The discipline of economics is informally managed in the United States by the American Economic Association (AEA). The AEA’s management of the economics community however was challenged starting in the 1960s by blacks, women, and radicals. Blacks, women, and radical economists each adopted a different strategy towards achieving greater empowerment in the discipline. Black economists created the Caucus of Black Economists and participated in the AEA’s Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession to encourage that steps be taken towards affirmative action and create a space for the publication of black economic research. Women economists participated in the AEA’s Committee for the Status of Women in the Economics Profession in 1971 to document the number of women in the economics profession, create a network of women economists and those supporting their work, and publish a newsletter containing statistics on representation within the profession and a listing of job openings and candidate availability. Radical economists created the Union for Radical Political Economics in 1968 to serve as a scholarly home for those holding non-mainstream beliefs and undertake the publication of a research journal, and sought some degree of solace from the AEA’s Committee on Political Discrimination. In the documentation of the different approaches taken by these groups, it becomes clear that there is no optimal inclusion strategy and that the barriers to being a recognized economist remain 50 years later.

A Filmmaking Research Continuum

Exploring aspects of the development of filmmaking research within the Academy over past decades, this article focuses on creative practice-based methods and the establishment of filmmaking as a legitimate research endeavour. It delves into the nuances of filmmaking research methodologies, specifically the rearticulation and repositioning of research practices to encompass both the work of filmmaking production and further filmmaking engagement with its reception. The importance of research statements in elucidating scholarly contributions made by films and other screen works, like scripts and video essays, is emphasised, alongside discussions of peer-review processes and the role of creative practice research journals in fostering critical dialogue within the filmmaking research community. Despite ongoing tensions between academic and industry requirements, the article argues for the progress of filmmaking research as a distinctive discipline with distinct methodologies, highlighting the need for continual refinement in quality assessment metrics to reflect the evolving nature of the field.

Improper care of the umbilical cord can lead to premature detachment and increase the risk of umbilical cord infection (neonatal tetanus). As long as the umbilical cord has not detached naturally, it needs to be properly cared for. Failure to do so can result in infection characterized by moisture, pus, and a foul odor around the umbilical cord. This review aims to determine the influence of mothers' knowledge on the care of the umbilical cord in newborns. This review aims to investigate the impact of mothers' knowledge on the care of the umbilical cord in newborns. This study utilizes a literature review method, utilizing journal articles obtained from Google Scholar, SINTA, and Garuda databases, published between 2019 and 2023, with full text available in the Indonesian language. Based on the reviewed journals, it was found that 7 journals discovered the influence of maternal knowledge on umbilical cord care in newborns, while 4 journals stated that there are still mothers who perform umbilical cord care incorrectly according to the procedure. Based on the literature review of 10 research journals, respondents' characteristics among postpartum mothers can be classified based on age, educational level, and occupation. All these factors significantly impact a mother's knowledge regarding the care of the umbilical cord in newborns, highlighting the importance of health education in enhancing maternal knowledge.

Introducing Salamat Academic & Research Journal

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Salamat Academic & Research Journal (SARJ), an open-access publication of Jami University dedicated to advancing medical and health sciences. SARJ, licensed by Afghanistan's Ministry of Higher Education in 2024, provides a prestigious, accessible forum for the publication of high-quality, peer-reviewed research. This journal is the latest initiative in Afghanistan's storied commitment to medical education, which began with the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine in Kabul in 1932 [1]. SARJ extends this legacy, offering Afghan and global researchers a platform for innovation in medical sciences. The establishment of SARJ also builds on the foundation of scholarly communication in Afghanistan. The Afghan Medical Journal (AMJ), initiated in 1956 by Kabul University, pioneered medical publication in Afghanistan, creating one of the nation’s first platforms for sharing scientific findings [2]. AMJ, originally published from 1956 to 1963, laid the foundation for scholarly medical publishing in Afghanistan and has recently been revitalized to continue its mission. The newly relaunched AMJ is now an official national and international open-access peer-reviewed journal. Initiatives like SARJ proudly follow in AMJ's footsteps, contributing to a robust and accessible platform for advancing medical research and public health in Afghanistan [3]. SARJ honors this tradition by fostering an inclusive academic community that makes quality medical research available to all, from students and researchers to healthcare practitioners.

A Comprehensive Review of Silver and Gold Nanoparticles as Effective Antibacterial Agents.

The increasing threat from antibiotic-resistant bacteria has necessitated the development of novel methods to counter bacterial infections. In this context, the application of metallic nanoparticles (NPs), especially gold (Au) and silver (Ag), has emerged as a promising strategy due to their remarkable antibacterial properties. This review examines research published between 2006 and 2023, focusing on leading journals in nanotechnology, materials science, and biomedical research. The primary applications explored are the efficacy of Ag and Au NPs as antibacterial agents, their synthesis methods, morphological properties, and mechanisms of action. An extensive review of the literature on NPs synthesis, morphology, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and effectiveness against various Gram(+/-) bacteria confirms the antibacterial efficacy of Au and Ag NPs. The synthesis methods and characteristics of NPs, such as size, shape, and surface charge, are crucial in determining their antibacterial activity, as these factors influence their interactions with bacterial cells. Furthermore, this review underscores the urgent necessity of standardizing synthesis techniques, MICs, and reporting protocols to enhance the comparability and reproducibility of future studies. Standardization is essential for ensuring the reliability of research findings and accelerating the clinical application of NP-based antimicrobial approaches. This review aims to propel NP-based antimicrobial strategies by elucidating the properties that enhance the antibacterial activity of Ag and Au NPs. By highlighting their inhibitory effects against various bacterial strains and relatively low cytotoxicity, this work positions Ag and Au NPs as promising materials for developing antibacterial agents, making a significant contribution to global efforts to combat antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

Walnuts as functional food and nutraceutical: A bibliometric study of research trends on nutritional potential, phytochemistry and its health benefits

AimThis study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of English walnut (Juglans regia L.) using the Scopus database. This study has also attempted to explore walnut’s nutritional potential, phytochemistry, and functional properties for overall human health benefits. MethodologyThis study uses the R-Bibliometrics package software to explore the Scopus database from 2002 to 2021. The keywords used are “Walnut” OR “Juglans regia” OR “Nutritional Potential” OR “Functional Food” OR “Phytochemistry” OR “Human health”. ResultsThe global trends and bibliometric analysis of walnut from 2002–2021 found that there was a total of 9868 documents indexed in 3151 Scopus-indexed sources. The agricultural and biological sciences recorded the maximum net publication, while the dentistry field recorded the minimum. Countries like China and the United States were the major funding sources, having the maximum net publications all over the globe. Upon analysing international collaboration, countries such as China, the USA, Italy, Iran, Spain, and the United Kingdom emerged as the world’s top collaborators. Maximum co-occurrences of the following keywords found are walnut, omega-3 fatty acid, Juglans regia, and walnut food. The most productive journals in walnut research recorded according to Bradford Law, the most productive walnut research journals were Acta Horticulture, Food Chemistry, Plant Diseases, Journal of Agricultural Hortiscience, Scientia Horticultureae, Nutrients, Molecules, PloS One, and Journal of Ethnopharmacology. People around the world use walnuts in a variety of foods and consider them an integral part of their diets. Walnut contains a variety of bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, alkaloids, and juglone, as well as nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, which make it a functional food for humans. Walnuts are much more than just a culinary item in traditional foods; they can provide a variety of human health benefits. ConclusionsThis study attempted to conduct a bibliometric analysis to analyze global trends and research productivity of walnut as a functional food in terms of phytochemistry, nutritional potential, and human health benefits. This study will help to identify the research gap, offer opportunities for multidisciplinary research, and present a novel visualisation map for walnut research. This study declared walnut a functional food for the future.

Effects of Plyometric Exercise of Adolescent Male Volleyball Athletes: A Systemic Review

By looking at previous literature, this study aimed to analyze the construct of plyometric exercise variation. Comprehensive methods are used for these articles, such as searching for articles in database research journals. Semantic, Scopus, Scholar, and Crossref are the data sources for this database. The variety of plyometric exercises and vertical jump skills are the main themes. Fifty-one articles were verified, and then 12 articles were evaluated based on objectives, topics, sample size, research protocols, and results. Plyometric exercises are exercises in which the movements are explosive and, besides being practical, also train muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and agility. The purpose of volleyball training is so that players can acquire good basic techniques, strengthen physical strength, and develop interests and talents. To improve jumping ability, various exercises are performed from the beginner level. Therefore, the ability to jump and jump is essential for the volleyball game. The novelty in this study is the using a form of plyometric exercise that is varied according to the characteristics of athletes aged 14-17 years that have never previously been applied in volleyball clubs, which is the focus in this study of plyometric exercise variation methods, namely plyometric squat jump, skipping and hurdle hopping. The intensity of the exercise will be adjusted to the characteristics, and physiological development of male athletes aged 14-17 years.

Global hotspots and research trends of radiation-induced skin injury: a bibliometric analysis from 2004 to 2023.

Radiation therapy has become an important treatment for many malignant tumours after surgery and for palliative tumour care. Although modern radiotherapy technology is constantly improving, radiation damage to normal tissues is often difficult to avoid, and radiation-induced skin injury (RSI) is a common complication, manifested as skin erythema, peeling, ulceration, and even bone and deep organ damage, seriously affect the quality of life for patients. Basic research and clinical trials related to RSI have achieved certain results, while no researchers have conducted comprehensive bibliometric studies. A comprehensive bibliometric analysis of publications on RSI published between 2004 and 2023 was conducted to identify current hotspots and future directions in this area of study. RSI-related publications published between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2023, were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database for analysis using VOSviewer and CiteSpace analytics. A total of 1009 publications on RSI from 2004 to 2023 were included in the WoSCC database. The United States had the highest productivity with 299 papers, accounting for 29.63% of the total production, followed by China with 193 papers (19.13%) and Japan with 111 papers (11.00%). In terms of research institutions and journals, the University of Toronto and Journal of Supportive Care in Cancer published the highest number of papers. Professor Edward Chow published the most articles, while Professor Shuyu Zhang was the most cited. The top ten most-cited papers focused on the pathogenesis, prevention, and management of RSI. Keyword co-occurrence analysis and the top 25 keywords with the strongest citation bursts suggest that current research focuses on the pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment management of RSI. This study conducted a systematic bibliometric analysis of RSI publications from 2004 to 2023; identified the trends in RSI publications, major research countries, major research institutions, major research journals, major research authors, and major research keywords; and revealed the future development direction and research hotspots of this field. This study provides a valuable reference for future RSI research.

Indicators of scientific production on Health Policy

Introduction: health and its maintenance constitute one of the main assets of man at any stage of his history. The implementation of health policies is aimed at solving global health problems that affect the population.Objective: characterize the scientific production on Health Policy in SCOPUSMethod: an observational, descriptive, bibliometric study was developed. A total of 229,339 articles were worked on. The SCOPUS database was used to collect the information; especially the SciVal tool for the analysis of information and the study of indicators. Descriptive statistics were applied to analyze the information.Results: a total of 229,339 articles were analyzed; equivalent to 2,471,305 appointments in the study period. I highlight the year 2023 with the highest number of articles published (31,982; 13.94%). The United States stood out with the highest number of articles published with 79,708 investigations (34.75%). The articles published in the journal BMC Health Services Research stood out with 10,425 investigations (23%). The largest number of articles were located in the health and health services categoryConclusions: scientific production related to Health Policy showed heterogeneous but constant growth, in contrast to the number of citations. The publications were related to the largest centers of scientific production. The research topics were directed with greater interest towards the quality of health services and assistance according to age groups

Promoting Inclusivity Through Technology: A Literature Review in Educational Settings

Inclusive education has been a major focus of global education policy conversations over the past few decades. Along with the rapid development of technology, the role of technology in supporting inclusive education has become an increasingly widely explored subject of research. Technology integration in the context of inclusive education involves the use of various tools and platforms that are accessible to students with special needs. The purpose of this research is to explore various aspects of the use of technology in promoting inclusion in education, by identifying opportunities, challenges and important factors that should be considered in order to create a more inclusive and equitable education for all individuals. The research method used is a literature review, exploring data sources such as journal articles, books, research reports and other academic publications relevant to this topic. The results of this study show that technology integration has had a significant positive impact in improving educational accessibility for students, allowing more efficient personalization of learning, and increasing student engagement and participation in the learning process. However, challenges such as technology infrastructure, teacher training, technology suitability, data privacy and necessary policy support need to be addressed for the benefits of technology to be optimized in supporting educational inclusion as a whole.

Admission, discharge, and transfer control in patient flow logistics: Overview and future research

Patient flow logistics involves managing and coordinating the movement of patients within a healthcare system. It aims to optimize the patients’ flow from their arrival to discharge or transfer, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources while minimizing delays and bottlenecks. Key components of patient flow logistics include capacity planning, resource allocation, appointment scheduling, and notably, admission, discharge, and transfer control. Our focus is on admission, discharge, and transfer control policies, which manage and regulate the flow of individual patients into and out of various facilities delivering care. We review a selection of 37 analytical, empirical, and experimental papers in this area published in leading operations research, operations management, and medical journals. These papers are categorized based on the specific department they target and the type of policies they consider. In particular, we identify: (i) four types of policies for intensive care units, (ii) three types of policies for emergency departments, and (iii) four types of policies for general wards. For each paper, we provide an overview of the research questions, formulations, solution methodologies, and results. This comprehensive review culminates in identifying future research directions for academics in this field.
