Internet usage too much is one of the things that can make it hard to get a good night’s sleep. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between internet addiction and sleep quality in SMA Negeri 2 Putussibau students. This type of research in an analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The sample used were students of SMA Negeri 2 Putussibau with total sampling technique. This research was conducted 452 students in grades X-XII using the Internet Addiciton Test(IAT) questionnaire to measure internet addiciton and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire to asses sleep quality in students of SMA Negeri 2 Putussibau. The test statiscal anaylsis that was employed was the Chi Square . The achieved P value = 0,001 (P values < 0.05) . So it can be concluded that there is a relationship between internet addiction and sleep quality in students of SMA Negeri 2 Putussibau

The Relationship of Internet Addiction and Physical Activity in Healthcare Professionals

The aim of the study is to determine the Internet addiction and physical activity levels of healthcare professionals. This study has been planned as a descriptive relational. The study was conducted with 140 healthcare workers working. In collecting data; The personal information form, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Young Addiction Scale were used. When the physical activity level is evaluated; 62.1% of the individuals were found to be inactive in terms of physical activity. When the internet addiction level was evaluated, it was seen that 46.4% of the healthcare workers were possibly addicted. A high negative correlation was found between physical activity and internet addiction. As the physical activity level of healthcare professionals decreases, the level of internet addiction increases.

Internet Addiction As Correlates To Depression and Life Satisfaction

Common behavioral problem described as an impulse control disorder which doesn’t include the use of an intoxicating drug very similar to pathological, is known as Internet Addiction, a rampant disorder during the digital age. This study looked into the relationship of internet addiction towards depression and life satisfaction. Two hundred respondents from various courses of a State University were chosen using fishbowl sampling. The Philippine Student Health Questionnaire was administered and 100% test results were retrieved. Results showed that most of the respondents are average users. There are also significant numbers who are problematic and the least were excessive users. Most respondents were suffering from mild depression and worryingly there were respondents having moderately severe and severe depression. For life satisfaction, results shows that most respondents are satisfied while some reported that they are slightly satisfied and least reported are dissatisfied. Statistics showed that there is no significant correlation between internet addiction and life satisfaction; however, there is a positive correlation between internet addiction and depression. Results highly suggests exerting efforts for awareness in regulating proper usage of internet such as time management. For Life Satisfaction, it is suggested to continue and share lifestyle practices which contribute to satisfaction and work on areas that need improvement promoting better life satisfaction.

The value-reflexive attitude of Russians to the Internet (the case of Moscow and the Moscow Region)

Information and communication technologies, the Internet in particular, have a significant impact on all the aspects of social life. Therefore, it is necessary to study the problems, consequences, and scale of such influence in the sphere of different scientific disciplines (sociology, psychology, and cultural studies) as well as in the sphere of interdisciplinary discourse. There is a need for research adequate to the current situation of transition to a new technological mode, a digital society, which actualizes the demand for the formation of a new type of personality, a new elite. The new elite will be the bearers of the socio-cultural code of deep and systemic information processing, the owners of electronic culture on the basis of critical digital literacy and reflexivity. At the same time, specific empirical studies of recent years abroad and in Russia demonstrate the predominance of competences of information and communication technologies user, which is absolutely insufficient in the digital society. This research aims to analyze the value-reflexive attitude of Russians to the Internet based on the results of a specific sociological survey among the residents of Moscow and the Moscow Region, implemented under the guidance and direct participation of the authors of this article during the period of social restrictions imposed by state authorities in connection with the new coronavirus infection from April to November 2020 by online questionnaire. The research tools included a block of questions on the digitalization of the region, including a number of statements showing the value-reflexive attitude of the respondents to the Internet. The results show that the number of respondents, who regard the Internet as one of the modern civilizational values, exceeds the share of respondents who recognize the dangers of Internet addiction. The authors have revealed that an even smaller percentage of those aware of the relationship of Internet addiction and anonymity on the Internet with the destruction of moral and moral systems, the erasure of the boundaries of personal and public space, psychological problems. A significant proportion of those who exhibit dangerous symptoms of alienation from the real, physical and social world was recorded. It was determined that for the majority of respondents, the Internet space has not become a platform of freedom, creative fulfillment, a friendly environment. The article assumes that economic conditions could become the foundation for bringing people together in the Internet space. Intergenerational differences in the value-reflexive attitude to the Internet space are revealed. The authors draw attention to the fact that the elderly, as the bearers of the deep meanings of traditional cultural forms, reflect the risks and dangers of the Internet space to a greater extent than the young people and adults. The authors link the prospects for further research with the sociological monitoring, which will allow studying the dynamics of digitalization processes in the region, the impact of age characteristics of identity on the attitude to the Internet, and the formation of electronic culture.

Relationship of Internet Addiction with Psychological Distress and Emotional Intelligence among university students

The present study explored the relationship of emotional intelligence and psychological distress with internet addiction. The participants were 200 individuals from different universities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, who were active internet users in their daily life. A co-relational method was used in order to obtain the quantitative analysis of the relationship between the three variables. The Internet Addiction Test (Young, 1998), Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (Wong et al., 2007) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21were used. The results supported the hypothesis that there is a relationship between internet addiction, psychological distress and emotional intelligence among internet users.

Internet addiction among students of Teerthanker Mahaveer University, Moradabad - A cross-sectional study

Background: Internet has become a widely used tool in a developing country like India as in the developed world and has shown exponential growth particularly in the past 10 years or so. There has been a growing worry among the intellectuals about what level of use can be termed as “more than desirable” and when should it be termed to be “Addiction.” Objectives: The objectives of this study were to find the sociobehavioral correlates and prevalence of internet addiction (IA), study the relationship of IA with internet use profile, and evaluate the risk factors associated with it among university students of TMU, Moradabad. Materials and Methods: A longitudinal cross-sectional survey was executed with sample size of 587 students from medical, nursing, physiotherapy, and engineering courses in the University of TMU after securing permission from their respective college authorities. Semi-structured, pre-designed, and pre-tested survey instrument consisting of “The IATest (Young, 1998)” after instructing them briefly was administered. Results: Of the total of 552 study subjects who took part in the study, 182 (32.97%) were girls and 370 (67.03%) were boys. The mean age of the students was found to be 19.5 years. Majority (64.31%) subjects were only mild users or non-addicts. On application of Young’s original criteria, as much as 2.54% of students were found to be addicts. Conclusion: In the modern days, obsession for having “All-knowledge” at fingertips, hype for social media and has variety to entertainment to name the few, the use of internet is but must; apart from the indispensable uses of internet, the college students are highly susceptible to IA that may cause wasting of the precious study time as well as their time for relaxation and recreational activities, ultimately affecting the educational situation unfavorably. Hence, the Universities/Educational Institutes should wake up to the impending problem and extenuate the use of internet mainly for scholastic purposes.

Relationship of Internet Addiction with Alexithymia and Childhood’s Perceived Parenting in University Students

Electronic media are integral part of everyday life and undoubtedly facilitate it on multiple levels. Internet is a useful work, knowledge (Papanikolaou, Makri, Magoulas, Chinou, Georgalas & Roussos, 2016), entertainment and information tool, but its limitless range often proves unsafe for the user. The present study, focuses on the relationship among web addiction, alexithymia and childhood’s perceived parenting while controlling for the indirect effect of depression. For the aims of the present study, 206 Greek University students attending Social, Exact Sciences and Ηumanities Departments, mean age 21, filled in a battery of measures; the Young’s Internet Addiction Test IAT (Young, 1998), the Toronto Alexithymia scale (Bagby, Parker & Taylor, 1994) the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale CES - D (Radloff, 1977), the Parental Bonding Instrument PBI of Parker, Tupling and Brown (1979) and a demographics form. Alexithymia presents significant direct association with Internet addiction, while the factors which mediate this relationship remain unclear. Findings are being discussed towards a possible review of the instruments measuring Internet addiction, as well as towards an approach of electronic media addiction from a different perspective with broader implications in therapeutic practice.

The relationship of internet addiction with anxiety and depressive symptomatology

Internet stimulates the user's senses causing a variety of subjective experiences and sensations, even though it has no inherent addictive quality. These experiences could be positive, as the improvement of education, or adverse, as the development of internet addiction. There are many people who prefer to invest their time and energy in the virtual world of the internet. They choose to withdraw their emotional investments from face to face communication, while in some cases the internet connection signifies the user's disconnection from the real life, as the person is isolated from the surrounding and lives in a virtual environment. Under these conditions the excessive use of internet may lead to addiction. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between internet addiction and anxiety and depressive symptomatology of the user. Participants were 203 internet users aged between 17 and 58 years (Mean=26.03, SD=7.92) who approached the Department For Problematic Use Of Internet, Addiction Unit "18ANO" in Psychiatric Hospital Of Attica to receive specialized help for their pathological internet use. Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was used for the assessment of internet addiction and Symptom Checklist- 90-R (SCL-90-R) was administered for the evaluation of anxiety and depressive symptomatology. The analysis of the survey data showed that gender difference is not observed as to the intensity internet dependence. Younger users are more likely to develop addictive behaviour (in relation to internet use). At this point it should be noted that although positive, this association does not present to be statistically significant. Finally, regarding the relationship between psychopathology and internet addiction, anxiety symptomatology, which was moderately correlated with the overall score at IAT, was found to predict in regression analysis the internet addiction. There was no statistically significant association between internet addiction and depressive symptomatology, with women however, who presented with depressive symptoms to appear more vulnerable than men (who requested therapy from the department). Exploration of the effects of sex and age on internet addiction is expected contribute to the design of the appropriate preventive and therapeutic programs, whereas the study of the relationship between internet addiction and other psychiatric disorders would contribute the understanding of the mechanisms underpinning the development and onset of the addiction.

The Relationship of Internet Addiction with Quality of Life and Alexithymia in Students in Iran

Introduction: Internet Addiction (IA) is one of the psychological disorders that have increased with the spread of technology, and its prevalence has also increased and leads to many complications on human health. Aim: This study was performed to investigate the relationship of IA with Quality Of Life (QOL) and alexithymia in students. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 381 students of Islamic Azad University of Shahrekord, southwest of Iran, were randomly selected by multi-stage cluster sampling. Data were collected by the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), a Quality Of Life (QOL) questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF), and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale. Data analysis was performed by SPSS v19 using Pearson's correlation coefficient and regression analysis. Results: A significant, inverse correlation was observed between QOL and IA (p=0.04, r=-0.167), and the correlation was positive and significant with respect to alexithymia. Between IA and QOL, a significant, inverse correlation was observed (p=0.03, r=0.212). Regarding the dimensions of QOL and alexithymia, IA was found to predict the QOL dimensions, including the psychological, social relationships, and external environment dimensions as well as, in alexithymia, the difficulties describing emotions and externally oriented thinking subscales (p<0.05). Conclusion: IA was associated with QOL and alexithymia. With the increase in IA, QOL declined, and as IA increased, alexithymia also increased.

The Study of Internet Addiction in Relation to Sleep Pattern – “Morning Lateness” Among Youth

The Internet is a massive, computer-linked network system used globally. In spite of the widely perceived merits of the tool, the excessive use of Internet is a primary attention of researchers all over the world.. Now, the term Internet addiction has become a worldwide and problematic phenomenon. The purpose of the present study was to find out the relationship of internet addiction with “Morning lateness” subscale of SWAPQ . The study was conducted on the sample of 170 (non- internet addict (45), moderate addict (85) and severe addict (40)) college students of Madhya Pradesh (M.P.), age range between 18 to 23 years. Young Internet Addiction (IAT), Sleep Wake Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SWAPQ) were used for this study. Descriptive statistics, One-way ANOVA and Post-Hoc mean comparison test were applied to determine the significant difference on “Morning lateness” subscale of SWAPQ between internet addicts and non internet addicts. The significant differences were found between them.

The relationship between internet addiction and eating disorders

I have read with interest the recent article by Alpaslan et al. [1] on the relationship between internet addiction and disordered eating attitudes. The authors have found that abnormal eating attitude was independently associated with internet addiction. They state that no studies have been published on the relationship between internet addiction and eating attitudes among Turkish participants [1]. However, there are at least two published papers from Turkey about this topic [2, 3]. Studies investigating the association of internet addiction and disordered eating have been accumulating recently. With the present communication, I would like to add a few considerations—focusing on the relationship of internet addiction and disordered eating—based on most recent experience. The main findings of the relevant studies are presented in Table 1. According to the results of this mini-review:

Relationship of Internet addiction with self-esteem and depression in university students.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship of self-esteem and depression with Internet addiction in university students. The present descriptive-analytic correlation study involved 408 students (150 female and 258 male) who had been selected by means of a cluster sampling method from among all the students studying in Birjand Islamic Azad University. Students were evaluated through the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Cooper Smith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI) and Internet Addiction Test (IAT). The results indicated that 40.7% of the students had Internet addiction. A significant correlation emerged between depression, self-esteem and Internet addiction. Regression analysis indicated that depression and self-esteem were able to predict the variance of Internet addiction to some extent. It may be important to evaluate self-esteem and depression in people with Internet addiction. These variables should be targeted for effective cognitive behavioral therapy in people with Internet addiction.

Relationship of Internet addiction with cognitive style, personality, and depression in university students

BackgroundThe aim of the study was to investigate the relationship of dysfunctional attitudes, self-esteem, personality, and depression with Internet addiction in university students. MethodsA total of 720 university students participated in the study in Bülent Ecevit University English Preparatory School which offers intensive English courses. Students were evaluated with a sociodemographic data form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale form A (DAS-A), Internet Addiction Scale (IAS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised/Abbreviated Form (EPQR-A). ResultsThe results indicated that 52 (7.2%) of the students had Internet addiction. There were 37 (71.2%) men, 15 (28.8%) women in the addicted group. While the addicted groups' BDI, DAS-A perfectionistic attitude, need for approval, RSES, EPQR-A neuroticism, and psychoticism scores were significantly higher, EPQR-A lie scores were significantly lower than those of the non addicted group. According to the multiple binary logistic regression analysis, being male, duration of Internet usage, depression, and perfectionistic attitude have been found as predictors for Internet addiction. It has been found that perfectionistic attitude is a predictor for Internet addiction even when depression, sex, duration of Internet were controlled. ConclusionsTo the knowledge of the researchers, this study is the first study to show the dysfunctional attitudes in Internet addiction. It can be important to evaluate dysfunctional attitudes, personality, self-esteem and depression in people with Internet addiction. These variables should be targeted for effective treatment of people with Internet addiction in cognitive behavioral therapy.

IntroductionOne salient impact of information technology on students’ lives is the ever-increasing use of the Internet. Although there exist many reports in the media regarding the unhealthy Internet use among students, research is still limited.ObjectivesThus, the purpose of the present study was to examine the relation of internet addiction with family functioning and mental health among students. Two-hundred and eighty students from high school and guidance school were selected by multiple cluster sampling method. They participated in the present study by completing internet addiction questionnaire, family functioning scale and mental health questionnair.The method of this study was descriptive and correlational in order to analyze the results, descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage) and inferential statistics (correlations and regression) were used.ResultsThe results showed negative significant correlation between internet addiction and some subscale of family function such as assertiveness, entertainment orientation and religious emphasis. Results also indicated positive significant correlation between 3 subscales of family functioning including dissociation, conflicts and authoritarian family style with internet addiction. No significant correlations were found between other subscales and internet addiction.Regarding the relationship between mental health and addiction to Internet, research results indicate a significant positive correlation between overall mental health score and two subscale of depression and somatization with internet addiction.ConclusionsThe results of this study confirmed the negative effects of Internet addiction on mental health and emphasized the importance of family on intensifying internet addiction. Hence in designing treatment programs, family environment must be considered.
