The article deals with the organization of the election campaign to the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod Region in 1998 and reveals the role of political parties operating in the Nizhny Novgorod Region at that time and the peculiarities of using electoral technologies. The authors indicate the most important problems that the candidates who ran for office addressed to the voters, and determines the most significant aspects of the results of the elections to the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Parliament in 1998. They reveal that charismatic politicians who distanced themselves from political parties were more successful in the struggle for votes than politicians who openly declared their party affiliation.
