ESPORTES ADAPTADOS COMO CONTEÚDO DA EDUCAÇÃO FÍSICA ESCOLAR: PERCEPÇÕES DOS PROFESSORES DE UMA ESCOLA DE MARINGÁ – PARANÁ

This research aims to analyze how Adapted Sports are worked in Physical Education classes at a Public College in the city of Maringá - PR. In addition, it aims to verify the pedagogical methodologies adopted by the teachers, pointing out the difficulties and facilities of dealing with this content in formal education. Therefore, the research was based on a qualitative approach of the descriptive type, in which a questionnaire was applied to six Physical Education teachers from the referred school. After application, an analysis of the collected data was carried out and from these results, it was verified that not all teachers of the chosen schoolwork this content in their classes, and those who do report difficulties, but also good acceptance by the students. Editorial

This first issue of the School of Criminology’s working paper series focuses on international interdisciplinary collaborations by showcasing a series of articles, reflections and poems written by participants at the 2023 University of West Indies–University of Leicester International Summer School, held at the University of Leicester and hosted by the School of Criminology. In the first week of June 2023, Dr Sonjah Stanley Niaah (University of West Indies, Mona) and Professor Michael A. Bucknor (University of Alberta) joined Leicester academics Dr Tammy Ayres, Dr Lucy Evans and Professor Martin Halliwell to co-deliver an intensive week-long cross-disciplinary programme, with an emphasis on both interdisciplinary exploration and professional development.

Developing a group-based psychoeducation intervention for adoptive parents and foster carers in a specialist child and adolescent mental health service setting

Children and young people in foster and adoptive families are considered more vulnerable to a high level of mental health need when compared to peers who are not care-experienced or adopted. Acceptance of this view amongst clinical providers and policy makers has necessitated the development of specialist provision and dedicated care pathways within child and adolescent mental health services. In this provision, practitioner-initiated quality improvement projects help in appraising the effectiveness of clinical interventions in local contexts, as well as identifying areas for service learning and practice reflection. This article reports on the evaluation of a mentalisation-based psychoeducation group intervention for adoptive parents and foster carers. The evaluation activity took place in a single child and adolescent mental health service setting, starting during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the intervention being implemented online via videoconferencing. In the article, after introducing the intervention (based on the Family Minds model), an analysis of clinical data collected pre- and post-intervention is reported. Few results of the analysis regarding the two pre- and post-measures reached statistical significance, indicating only changes in the magnitude of stress in the parent/carer-child system. A series of reflections are posed that consider what this finding means in developing fit-for-purpose support for adoptive parents and foster carers in child and adolescent mental health service contexts.

Analysis of the contributions of Galenic medicine to pharmacology

Introduction: Pharmacology is commonly perceived as a field of study of modern medicine, however there were historical figures who, since ancient times, established the bases and properties of numerous drugs. Galen developed the foundations of pharmacology through observation and experimentation. . with various natural substances, including plants.Objective: Analyze the contributions of galenic medicine to the development of pharmacology and phytopharmacology.Methods: A literature review was carried out using academic databases such as PubMed, Scopus y Google Scholar, focusing on studies on Galen's contributions to the topic studied. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to select bibliographic sources, and a qualitative analysis of the extracted data was performed to synthesize the findings into relevant thematic categories.Results: Although Galen's research methods were not always ethical, nor were his conceptions of the human being completely accurate, his contribution to pharmacology is undeniable and fundamental. He transformed the pharmacology of his time, based on humoral theory, towards a rational and systematic classification of drugs, introducing concepts such as dosage and active ingredients. In addition, he established bases for phytopharmacology and conceptualized the minimum theoretical principles of toxicology.Conclusions: Galen made a series of reflections and associations of ideas that allowed him to accumulate extensive experience based on a scientific method that he himself promoted. This approach remains relevant today, evidencing the durability of his contributions to medical science.

Sparse-spike seismic inversion with semismooth newton algorithm solver

Seismic prospecting has been widely used in the exploration and development of underground geological resources, such as mineral products (e.x., coal, uranium deposit), oil and gas, groundwater, and so forth. Seismic impedance is a physical characteristic parameter of underground formation, which can be used in lithologic classification, rock characterization, stratigraphic correlation, and further mineral reservoir prediction, reserve estimation, and so forth. To estimate impedance from seismic data, one must perform reflectivity series inversion first. Under a simple exponential integration transformation, the reflectivity series can give the final estimated impedance. Sparse-spike seismic inversion is the most common method to obtain reflectivity series with high resolution. It adopts a sparse regularization to impose sparsity on reflectivity series. From sparse reflectivity series, the final estimated impedance has blocky features to make formation interfaces and geological edges precise, which is very important to accurately delineate the distribution range of mineral resources. The development of sparse-spike seismic inversion is still facing major challenges of fast optimization algorithms in real-life application, especially for massive seismic data in 3D case. Semismooth Newton algorithm (SNA), which is a second order mehtod and has super-linear, even quadratic convergence rate, is used to solve sparse-spike seismic inversion. The proposed algorithm has been compared with common used algorithms through a synthetic seismic trace and a 3D real seismic data volume. The results show that the proposed algorithm has faster convergence rate and fewer computation time. It provides a new effective algorithm to solve sparse-spike seismic inversion.

A Department-Wide Transition to a New Mode of Computer-Aided Assessment Using STACK

AbstractWe focus on the integration of STACK—a Computer-Aided Assessment (CAA) technology—in the mathematics department of a high-ranking University in the United Kingdom. We study a department-wide project where instructors were expected to implement STACK into continuous assessment tasks for (nearly) all core modules across the first two years of undergraduate study. We present this work as a departmental case study, drawing on semi-structured interviews with six novice STACK assessment designers (and module leaders), supplemented by students’ responses to an open-response feedback questionnaire, and the reflections of a co-project lead (also first author). Our thematic analysis identified four themes related to the design of STACK-based assessments by novice to STACK tutors: the process of ‘STACKification’, technical challenges, users’ perspectives on the role of CAA, and finally, variations in assessment designers’ approaches to the role of feedback. In presenting our results, we are guided by Sangwin’s (2013) design principles for mathematics assessment. We consider various technical aspects of implementing STACK-based assessments as a first-time user, and the knowledge required to do so effectively and coherently. We conclude with a series of reflections on the role of CAA in undergraduate mathematics, and the ways in which such technology can be productively integrated with established practice.

Transculturación digital: reflexión de un cambio permanente en la educación superior

As part of a series of reflections from a postdoctoral project, this essay presents the notion of digital transculturation among educators in higher education, addressing the evolution from computational and informational culture towards a digital culture. It starts from the emergence of personal computers with graphical user interfaces to the explosion of software packages, a condition that transformed computer usage and its integration into higher education institutions, leading to the production and consumption of digital content, thereby giving rise to a permanent acculturation in the use of ICT. From this backdrop, a reflection is made on the transformation of digital culture in higher education, considering technological evolution, the appropriation of computational knowledge, and digital skills as cultural elements from a digital dimension. The concept of digital transculturation is used as a theoretical framework to comprehend this constantly evolving process. Approaching digital transculturation as a continuous process of change, influenced by the adoption of new technologies and the digitization of culture, the essay analyzes the adaptation of teachers to this transition, highlighting stages of resistance, adaptation, and appropriation of digital culture in educational practice.

Physical education pre-service teachers’ perceptions of learning about the spectrum of teaching styles and its role in their pedagogical awareness and practice

The purpose of this study was to examine physical education pre-service teachers’ (PSTs’) beliefs about the usefulness of the spectrum of teaching styles (also referred to as The Spectrum; Mosston and Ashworth, 2008 ) and their perceived abilities to use each style. Using a series of foregrounding techniques based on The Spectrum, PSTs’ ( N = 34) experiences with the teaching styles were explored over one academic semester using a mixed methods approach ( Creswell and Plano Clark, 2018 ). The participants completed a pre/post survey (validated instrument) before and after the semester to record their perceptions of each teaching style. All participants answered several open-ended questions and completed a series of video-based lesson reflections, and 15 of the 34 participants were interviewed individually about their experiences. The results reflected significant increases in the PSTs’ perceived ability to use styles A, B, and F. Qualitative themes were: (1) instructional comfortability from early and frequent experiences learning about and using The Spectrum; (2) a heightened desire to utilize styles with K-12 students; (3) a desire for more support in understanding the alignment between style choice and learning objectives; and (4) an interest in knowing how to connect The Spectrum with curriculum models. The results suggest that there is likely a developmental process for PSTs in learning about and applying The Spectrum. A relationship also appears to be present between using The Spectrum in conjunction with models-based practices. Foregrounding PSTs’ learning within The Spectrum can ease planning anxiety more intentionally and effectively, which can in turn increase the pedagogical accountability of PSTs.

Exploring the continuing effects of COVID-19 on tertiary screen production education in Australia

ABSTRACT This article considers how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted tertiary-level screen production education in Australia. Six university educators across four Australian states present a series of critical thematic reflections, interrogating their lived experiences of teaching screen production courses during periods impacted by COVID-19 lockdowns and social distancing requirements. The analysis reveals the pandemic amplified areas like concept development and fundamental production skills using mobile devices, while more advanced technical skills and student collaboration suffered due to remote learning conditions. Managing health risks through COVID-safe protocols became a major priority. Student storytelling shifted towards shorter individual projects exploring themes of isolation, though some collectives producing anthology series also emerged. While some pandemic-driven changes like online meetings have persisted, the authors identify an ongoing need to foster students’ interpersonal skills and technical proficiency developed through collaborative, hands-on learning experiences. The diverse reflections highlight common challenges but also differences across states based on varying COVID-19 conditions and restrictions. Overall, the authors argue for balanced, responsive approaches going forward to equip graduates with frameworks to navigate screen industry shifts alongside changing student expectations around delivery modes.

El insilio: cierta deuda de la crítica literaria en América Latina

Within the broad scope of themes and aesthetic currents that Latin American literature has produced, displacement in its multiple faces - migration, exile, diaspora - has played a prominent role. However, it is important to note that there are aesthetic projects built on a non-geographic type of human displacement, the insile, which represents one of the great gaps in Latin American literary historiography. In this sense, the aim of this analysis is to compile, through a non-exhaustive bibliographical review, a series of theoretical reflections that can serve as a preliminary systematization on the theme of insile. This compilation will be carried out from the analysis of certain critical and literary works, aiming to propose a reconfiguration of the critical cartography of Latin American literature. For this purpose, the corpus of the work is composed of critical texts by authors such as Jacques Derrida, Elena Palmero González and Eduardo Lalo, in addition to the novel Los Vigilantes (1994), by Chilean writer Diamela Eltit (1949).

Staging Material Encounters

This paper outlines and reflects upon a recent period of practice-based research into the human and more-than-human relationship at this critical time for life on Earth. Drawing on ideas from within the field of human trauma, which describe how remnants of traumatic experiences become trapped within the body as sensations, pain, processes, and cancers, completely cut off from the original experiences that contributed to their formation, the research was centred around the concept of Earth as an expressive archive of valuable information about the way it has been treated and related to. Like Van Der Kolk’s human body (Van Der Kolk, 2015), the Earth in this context “keeps the score”. Notions of extractivism, objectification and othering, along with ideas around ‘separation sickness’, describing the ‘cultural trauma’ of intergenerational disconnection from ourselves and the land (Rust, 2020), form the backdrop to the research. A variety of starting points fed into the work, impacting upon one another in rich, diverse, and complex ways. Printmaking processes were utilised throughout as both research tools and within more resolved works. The paper is a series of reflections, not necessarily chronological or complete, but rather a snapshot of key ideas, questions, processes, and directions.

Autotheory, Critical and Clinical

ABSTRACT It is in the spirit of viewing autotheory as an unsettled genre that dramatizes the mind’s own unsettlement, that I want to experiment with the implications for clinical writing. In this paper, I include a clinical case that I wrote in two channels – one is a straightforward clinical style, while the other is a series of more personal reflections. I italicized the personal voice in order to experiment with rhythms and tones that would have been lost if the piece had to cohere in a stylistically continuous way. After my experiment with clinical writing, I will offer some thoughts on Lyndon’s own contributions to this emerging genre.

In Context: AI Will Write Your Paper: The Very Different Future of Research and Scientific Writing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Recently, I was at a Microsoft Technology Center to discuss the augmented reality (AR) technology developed in my lab for treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We also explored the possibility of using artificial intelligence (AI) to automate interactions with digital AR characters. We were also given a tour of the Microsoft 365 Copilot AI technology. This experience, along with my upcoming experiences with the rapidly evolving and publicly available AI technology, triggered a series of questions and reflections about the use of AI in scientific work and writing.

Escuchar a los migrantes y sus familias. Experiencias desde el Programa Binacional de Educación Migrante

The text explores a series of reflections on the practice of listening within working groups with migrant communities within the framework of the Binational Migrant Education Program. Through educational workshops, there was an opportunity to work with migrant families on various topics such as health, coexistence, or recommendations for school learning. The author suggests some strategies and thematic axes prioritizing communication and mutual understanding. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of making visible the role of girls, boys, and adolescents in the migration process in order to understand their needs and dreams.

Decolonising Studies of Religion in So-Called Australia: Truth-Telling, Collective Reflections and Future Trajectories

ABSTRACT Studies of religion in the lands now called (by some) Australia have thus far focused mainly on so-called Abrahamic traditions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, the southern states of New South Wales and Victoria and on theories from the global North. This is despite the fact that Australia is a religiously and spiritually diverse nation, and that diverse worldviews in Australia have long been and continue to be shaped by First Peoples, and South–South flows of migration across the Pacific and Indian oceans, particularly in Australia’s far northern regions. This article begins with truth-telling of the historical and contemporary reality of the religious and spiritual composition of Australia, challenging the myth of a White Christian nation. It then includes a series of scholarly and personal reflections, by the paper’s authors, on why and how there is a need to decolonise studies of religion in Australia. These author narratives, recounting lived experiences from their diverse positionalities including their First Peoples, Indonesian, Chinese, African, and/or European backgrounds, further reflect Australia’s multifaith and ‘multicultural Real’ (Hage 1998). The paper concludes with an analysis of these narratives and posits ways forward to dislocate coloniality in the study of religion across the Asia-Pacific region.

What should we make of this series of opaque observations and reflections, composed in what might strike an unfamiliar reader at first as a peculiarly rapid form of shorthand? Looked at again, these stanzas constitute two remarkably sustained syntactical performances, whose respective hypotaxis and parataxis are, however, hard to construe: a crisscrossing of a remembered past tense and second-order commentary that in each case leaves their speaker’s temporal location uncertain. This figure’s spatial movement in the first stanza, although similarly occluded, provides one route into the poem, while at the same time introducing its own form of hesitancy. I find myself liable to fall foul of ‘to step on’, with what might be sensed as its apparently incomplete preposition, and leaning into it conversely seems to risk trampling over the poem entire.
