Mechanochemical nitridation of micron zero-valent iron for enhanced dechlorination of trichloroethylene: Mechanistic insights into nitrogen sources and ball milling conditions

The performance optimization of zero-valent iron (ZVI) based materials for reductive dechlorination remains challenging. After extensive research on sulfidation modification, the doping of heteroatom nitrogen (N) into ZVI for reductive dechlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHCs) becomes a new promising trend. In this study, surface modification of microscale ZVI (mZVI) was carried out by a facile ball milling method, and Fe–N(C) coated mZVI (abbreviated as N(C)-mZVIbm) synthesized from different N sources of dimethylimidazole, urea and melamine were characterized. The effects of nitrogen-to-iron ratios (N/Fe), ball milling time and speed on the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) were further investigated. A series of characterization and mechanistic analysis showed that the high reactivity of N(C)-mZVIbm with melamine as nitrogen source (abbreviated as N(C)-mZVIbm(M)) was attributed to the properties and thickness of its particle passivation layer, and faster electron transfer from the reduced iron species to the surface layer. In addition, N(C)-mZVIbm(M) exhibited great performance for dechlorination at a wide pH range of 3 to 11, due to alleviated passivation of the Fe0 core under alkaline conditions by Fe–N(C). This study presents new ideas and evidences for the environmentally friendly synthesis of N-modified ZVI materials and their practical application in groundwater remediation.

Dual effects of PFOA or PFOS on reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE)

PFASs and chlorinated solvents are the common co-contaminants in soil and groundwater at firefighter training areas (FTAs). Although PFASs mixtures could have adverse impacts on bioremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by inhibiting Dehalococcoides (Dhc), little is known about the effect and contribution of PFOA or PFOS on dechlorination of TCE by non-Dhc organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB). To study this, PFOA and PFOS were amended to the growth medium of a non-Dhc OHRB-containing enrichment culture to determine the impact on dechlorination. This study demonstrated that high levels of PFOA or PFOS (100 mg L–1) inhibited TCE dechlorination in four non-Dhc OHRB-containing community including Geobacter, Desulfuromonas, Desulfitobacterium, and Dehalobacter, but low levels of PFOA or PFOS (≤10 mg L–1) enhanced TCE dechlorination. Four non-Dhc OHRB were less inhibited by PFOA than that by PFOS, and high level of PFOS killed Desulfitobacterium and Dehalobacter and decreased the biodiversity of bacterial community. Although most fermenters were killed by the presence of 100 mg L–1 PFOS, two important co-cultures (Desulfovibrio and Sedimentibacter) of OHRB were enriched, indicating that the syntrophic relationships between OHRB and co-cultures still remained, and PFOA or PFOS inhibited TCE dechlorination by directly repressing non-Dhc OHRB. Our results highlight that the bioattenuation of chloroethene contamination could be confounded by non-Dhc OHRB in high levels of PFOS contaminated subsurface environments at FTAs.

Degrading chlorinated aliphatics by reductive dechlorination of groundwater samples from the Santa Susana Field Laboratory

Microbial reductive dechlorination is one of the chosen methods for remediation of chlorinated compounds in anaerobic environments. In this study we examined the degradation of chlorinated aliphatics in groundwater samples from the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) containing a concentration of 0.228 mM trichloroethylene (TCE) and 0.279 mM 1,2 dichloroethylene (DCE). We tested the influence of adding different carbon sources on the dechlorinating activity in batch cultures with and without dechlorinating bacteria. In-situ microcosms were established using SSFL groundwater supplemented with EVO (5%) (vol/vol) SRS emulsion and with or without species of Dehalocococcoides (DCB-1, DCB-2 or DCB-3). Emulsified vegetable oil (EVO) gave the highest dechlorinating activity with DCB-1 added compared to any other substrate addition tested. All three bacterial cultures tested had significant dechlorinating activities while the native populations in the SSFL groundwater samples only showed limited degradation of trichloroethylene into intermediates in the form of DCE, vinyl chloride and ethane. The conversion of chlorinated ethylenes (CEs) was optimal in the bioreactors amended with DCB-1 followed by DCB-2, and DCB-3 all supplemented with EVO. We further analyzed the TCE degradation first order kinetics in batch cultures and found that the culture with DCB-1 supplemented with EVO showed 43.59% and 51.38% increased degradation rate compared to the same condition with cultures of DCB-2 or DCB-3 added. The microcosm studies further showed that with DCB-1 and EVO, reductive dechlorination of TCE in the SSFL converted 90% of the input TCE to ethane with a degradation rate of 0.0039 mM/day.

Trichloroethylene dechlorination rates, pathways, and efficiencies of ZVMg/C in aqueous solution

The removal mechanism from the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) by zero valent magnesium (ZVMg) in aqueous solution is systematically studied. Following the preparation and characterization of ball-milled micro ZVMg with graphite (ZVMg/C) particles, this paper evaluated the TCE reaction rates, pathways, utilization rates and aging effects of ZVMg/C particles in aqueous solution under uncontrolled pH conditions. Overall, 38 μM of TCE was transformed by 10 g/L of ZVMg/C to methane (62.51%) and n-hexane (11.86%) and ethane (7.40%) and other alkene and alkyne products through the catalytic hydrogenation pathway. The measured surface area normalized pseudo-first order rate constants (KSA) were up to 9.31 × 10−2 L/m2/h and the utilization rate of Mg0 accounted for around 60%. The KSA were decreased to 1.90 × 10−2 L/m2/h in case of ZVMg/C being exposed in the atmosphere for 6 days due to 7.3% reduction in the utilization rate of Mg0 from the initial 85.2%, and 5.11 × 10−2 L/m2 h in case of ZVMg/C aged in water for one day. The removal efficiencies of approximately 56%, 58% and 87% by 10 g/L of ZVMg/C were achieved in the contaminated groundwater comprising 38 μM of TCE, 43 μM of 1,2-dichlorobenzene and 8.12 μM of trichlormethane. Therefore, it is concluded that ZVMg/C is viewed as a potential and effective remediation reagent for the groundwater remediation.

Effect of Copresence of Zerovalent Iron and Sulfate Reducing Bacteria on Reductive Dechlorination of Trichloroethylene.

Sulfur amendment of zerovalent iron (ZVI) materials has been shown to improve the reactivity and selectivity of ZVI toward a select group of organohalide contaminants in groundwater, most notably trichloroethene (TCE). In previous studies, chemical or mechanochemical sulfidation methods were used; however, the potential of using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to enable sulfur amendment has not been closely examined. In this study, lab-synthesized nanoscale ZVI (nZVI) and Peerless iron particles (ZVIPLS) were treated in a sulfate-reducing monoculture (D. desulfuricans) and an enrichment culture derived from freshwater sediments (AMR-1) prior to reactivity assessments with TCE as the model contaminant. ZVI conditioned in both cultures exhibited higher dechlorination efficiencies compared to unamended ZVIs. Remarkably, nZVI and ZVIPLS exposed to AMR-1 attained similar TCE dechlorination rates as their counterparts receiving chemical sulfidation (i.e., S-nZVI) using previously reported method. Product distribution data show that, in the SRB-ZVI system, abiotic dechlorination is the dominant TCE reduction pathway. In addition to dissolved sulfide, biogenic or synthesized FeS particles can enhance nZVI reactivity even as nZVI and FeS were not in direct contact, implying that SRB may influence the reactivity of ZVI via multiple mechanisms in different remediation situations. A shift in Archaea abundance in AMR-1 with nZVI amendment was observed but not with ZVIPLS. Overall, the synergy exhibited in the SRB-ZVI system may offer a valuable remediation strategy to overcome limitations of standalone biological or abiotic dechlorination approaches for chlorinated solvent abatement.

Biological effects of tourmaline treatment on Dehalococcoides spp. during the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene.

In the present study, to develop the application of biostimulation for the in situ remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in contaminated groundwater/soil, a mixed culture containing Dehalococcoides spp. was employed to investigate the biological effects of the polarized mineral tourmaline on the dechlorination performance, community structure, cell proliferation and expression of two model gene (tceA and vcrA) coding for reductive dehalogenases (Rdase). It was observed that tourmaline could speed up the biological dechlorination of TCE by promoting the growth and metabolism of the bacteria, impacting the expression of RDase genes. Compared with the bacteria system, the time for the complete removal of TCE was reduced from 7 d to 4 d when 5 g L−1 tourmaline was added to the bacterial system, and the yield of the innocuous product ethene increased from 53% to 91% on the 15th day of reaction. At this time, the community similarity of the tourmaline-added bacteria system and the bacteria system was 83.1%. The Dehalococcoides spp. in the tourmaline system grew 2 times more than that in the bacteria system. Moreover, an increase in the expression levels and decrease in the relative expression ratios of the functional genes (tceA and vcrA) were observed with the addition of tourmaline. The above analysis provides a molecular basis for the investigation of the biostimulation process by minerals.

Groundwater geochemical constituents controlling the reductive dechlorination of TCE by nZVI: Evidence from diverse anaerobic corrosion mechanisms of nZVI

The corrosion mechanisms of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) vary with different geochemical constituents, which affect the reductive dechlorination process of trichloroethylene (TCE). In this study, the effect of nZVI anaerobic corrosion on the reductive dechlorination of TCE with different groundwater geochemical constituents (Ca2+-SO42-, Ca2+-HCO3-, Na+-NO3-) was investigated. Microscopic characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combined with pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and dissolved Fe2+ in solutions to illustrate the corrosion mechanism of nZVI. In the four systems including ultrapure water (UPW), the reduction of TCE conformed to pseudo-first-order kinetics, the generation of Cl− accorded with zero-order kinetics, and multi-step reaction kinetics was used to fit the generation and degradation of chlorinated byproducts (Dichloroethylene, DCEs). Compared with UPW system, the dissolution corrosion of Ca2+-HCO3- and Ca2+-SO42- promoted the reductive dechlorination of TCE (kobs, TCE = 0.658 ± 0.010 & 0.245 ± 0.028 d−1 and kobs, Cl- = 41.682 ± 1.016 & 20.623 ± 1.923 μM⋅d−1 for Ca2+-HCO3- & Ca2+-SO42-, respectively) and the degradation of DCEs (0.444 ± 0.036 & 0.244 ± 0.040 μM⋅d−1 for Ca2+-HCO3- & Ca2+-SO42-, respectively); redox-active NO3− competed for electrons and passivated the surface of nZVI, which limited the reductive dechlorination of TCE (kobs, TCE = 0.111 ± 0.025 d−1 & kobs, Cl- = 14.943 ± 0.664 μM⋅d−1) and the degradation of DCEs (0.078 ± 0.018 μM⋅d−1), and the passivation layer promoted the adsorption of TCE. This study from the perspective of nZVI corrosion provides a theoretical basis for the long-term application of nZVI technology in the remediation of TCE-contaminated sites with different groundwater geochemical types.

Effects of non-reducible dissolved solutes on reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene by ball milled zero valent irons

Non-reducible solution anions have been well recognized to affect reactivity of ZVI in dechlorinating chlorinated hydrocarbons. However, their effects and corresponding functional mechanisms on electron efficiency (εe) of ZVI remain unclear. In this study, mechanochemically modified microscale sulfidated and unsulfidated ZVI particles (i.e., S-mZVIbm and mZVIbm) and trichloroethylene (TCE) were used as model particles and contaminant to explore such effects. PO43− as a corrosion promoter enhanced initial dechlorination rate by both particles. However, its passivating role as a surface complex agent became significant at the later stage of dechlorination by mZVIbm, while sulfidation alleviated this effect without inhibition of dechlorination. Compared with enhancing dechlorination, PO43− promoted hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to a higher extent, decreasing εe for both particles by 17–73 %. HCO3− negligibly affected dechlorination by both particles, while elevated HER. Thus, HCO3− [5 mM] decreased εe for S-mZVIbm and mZVIbm by 1.9 % and 22 %. Different from PO43− and HCO3−, Cl− and SO42− showed no significant effects on dechlorination, HER, and therefore εe for both particles. These results imply that even though some co-existing anions (i.e., PO43− and HCO3−) acting as corrosion promoters could improve the dechlorination by ZVIs, they would lead to decreased εe and shortened particle reactive lifetime.

Sulfur Loading and Speciation Control the Hydrophobicity, Electron Transfer, Reactivity, and Selectivity of Sulfidized Nanoscale Zerovalent Iron.

Sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron (SNZVI) is a promising material for groundwater remediation. However, the relationships between sulfur content and speciation and the properties of SNZVI materials are unknown, preventing rational design. Here, the effects of sulfur on the crystalline structure, hydrophobicity, sulfur speciation, corrosion potential, and electron transfer resistance are determined. Sulfur incorporation extended the nano-Fe0 BCC lattice parameter, reduced the Fe local vacancies, and lowered the resistance to electron transfer. Impacts of the main sulfur species (FeS and FeS2 ) on hydrophobicity (water contact angles) are consistent with density functional theory calculations for these FeSx phases. These properties well explain the reactivity and selectivity of SNZVI during the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE), a hydrophobic groundwater contaminant. Controlling the amount and speciation of sulfur in the SNZVI made it highly reactive (up to 0.41 L m-2 d-1 ) and selective for TCE degradation over water (up to 240 moles TCE per mole H2 O), with an electron efficiency of up to 70%, and these values are 54-fold, 98-fold, and 160-fold higher than for NZVI, respectively. These findings can guide the rational design of robust SNZVI with properties tailored for specific application scenarios.

Pilot-Scale Evaluation of a Permeable Reactive Barrier with Compost and Brown Coal to Treat Groundwater Contaminated with Trichloroethylene

This study evaluates, under field conditions, the efficiency of a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) with compost and brown coal to remove trichloroethylene (TCE) (109 µg/L) from contaminated groundwater. Three stainless steel boxes (1.2 × 0.5 × 0.5 m) with the brown coal-compost mixture at three different mixing ratios of 1:1, 1:3, and 1:5 (by volume) were installed to simulate the PRB. Groundwater from the TCE-contaminated aquifer was pumped into the system at a flow rate of 3.6 L/h. Residence times in the boxes were of: 25, 20, 10 h, respectively. Effluent samples were analyzed for TCE and its daughter products: dichloroethylene (DCE), vinyl chloride (VC) and ethane. During the 198-day experimental period TCE concentrations in groundwater decreased below ≤1.1 µg/L, i.e., much lower than groundwater and drinking water standards in Poland. After 16 days cis-1,2-DCE was monitored indicating possible reductive dechlorination of TCE. However, complete transformation of TCE into non-toxic byproducts was not evidenced during the time of experiments, indicating that reductive dechlorination slowed down or stopped at DCE, and that the designed residence times were not long enough to allow the complete dechlorination process.

Reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene by polyvinylpyrrolidone stabilized nanoscale zerovalent iron particles with Ni

We developed a novel stabilized nanoscale zerovalent iron (NZVI) particles with Ni using an electron conducting polymer, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), to selectively dechlorinate trichloroethylene (TCE) to non-toxic intermediates. The size of the PVP stabilized NZVI-Ni ((PVP-NZVI-Ni), average diameter: ∼20nm) is smaller than that of bare NZVI (50–80nm) due to the prevention of agglomeration of the resultant iron particles by PVP. PVP-NZVI-Ni showed a complete removal of TCE in 1h with superior dechlorination kinetics (kobs=5.702h−1) and ethane selectivity (98%), while NZVI-Ni showed 5 times slower dechlorination kinetics (1.218h−1). Other PVP-NZVI-metals (i.e., Cu, Sn, Co, and Mn) also enhanced the TCE dechlorination, but they were much slower (kobs=0.024−0.411h−1) than that of PVP-NZVI-Ni. In column test, PVP-NZVI-Ni exhibited better mobility (95% of PVP-NZVI-Ni recovery in the eluent) than NZVI-Ni (1%). In addition, PVP-NZVI-Ni reductively transform TCE to ethane even under 10 cycles of repeated TCE dechlorination treatment.

Reductive Dechlorination of Trichloroethylene (TCE) in Competition with Fe and Mn Oxides—Observed Dynamics in H2-dependent Terminal Electron Accepting Processes

The determination of hydrogen (H2) concentration together with the products of microbial reduction reactions in a trichloroethylene dechlorinating system is conducted to delineate the ongoing predominant terminal electron accepting processes (TEAP). Formate was used as electron donor and synthetic Fe minerals or environmental samples were used as the substrate. Iron(III) and Mn(IV) reduction limited microbial dechlorination by the mixed anaerobic culture by decreasing the level of H2 in the system. The H2 measurements indicated that the H2 concentration at which different TEAPs occur can overlap and thus these TEAPs can therefore occur concurrently rather than exclusively. Difference in Fe(III) bioavailability and hence, Fe(III) reduction partially explain this wide range. The distinction between dechlorination and other microbial reduction processes based on H2 threshold values is not feasible under such conditions, though there appears to be a relation between the rates of H2 consuming process and the observed H2 level.

Application of a long-lasting colloidal substrate with pH and hydrogen sulfide control capabilities to remediate TCE-contaminated groundwater

A long-lasting emulsified colloidal substrate (LECS) was developed for continuous carbon and nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) release to remediate trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated groundwater under reductive dechlorinating conditions. The developed LECS contained nZVI, vegetable oil, surfactants (Simple Green™ and lecithin), molasses, lactate, and minerals. An emulsification study was performed to evaluate the globule droplet size and stability of LECS. The results show that a stable oil-in-water emulsion with uniformly small droplets (0.7μm) was produced, which could continuously release the primary substrates. The emulsified solution could serve as the dispensing agent, and nZVI particles (with diameter 100–200nm) were distributed in the emulsion evenly without aggregation. Microcosm results showed that the LECS caused a rapid increase in the total organic carbon concentration (up to 488mg/L), and reductive dechlorination of TCE was significantly enhanced. Up to 99% of TCE (with initial concentration of 7.4mg/L) was removed after 130 days of operation. Acidification was prevented by the production of hydroxide ion by the oxidation of nZVI. The formation of iron sulfide reduced the odor from produced hydrogen sulfide. Microbial analyses reveal that dechlorinating bacteria existed in soils, which might contribute to TCE dechlorination.

Inhibition of iron (III) minerals and acidification on the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene

Reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes is inhibited by acidification and by the presence of Fe (III) as a competitive electron acceptor. Synergism between both factors on dechlorination is predicted as reductive dissolution of Fe (III) minerals is facilitated by acidification. This study was set-up to assess this synergism for two common aquifer Fe (III) minerals, goethite and ferrihydrite. Anaerobic microbial dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) by KB-1 culture and formate as electron donor was investigated in anaerobic batch containers at different solution pH values (6.2–7.2) in sand coated with these Fe minerals and a sand only as control. In the absence of Fe, lowering substrate pH from 7.2 to 6.2 increased the time for 90% TCE degradation from 14±1d to 42±4d. At pH 7.2, goethite did not affect TCE degradation time while ferrihydrite increased the degradation time to 19±1d compared to the no Fe control. At pH 6.2, 90% degradation was at 78±1 (ferrihydrite) or 131±1d (goethite). Ferrous iron production in ferrihydrite treatment increased between pH 7.2 and 6.5 but decreased by further lowering pH to 6.2, likely due to reduced microbial activity. This study confirms that TCE is increasingly inhibited by the combined effect of acidification and bioavailable Fe (III), however no evidence was found for synergistic inhibition since Fe reduction did not increase as pH decreases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study where effect of pH and Fe (III) reduction on TCE was simultaneously tested. Acid Fe-rich aquifers need sufficient buffering and alkalinity to ensure swift degradation of chlorinated ethenes.

Application of polycolloid-releasing substrate to remediate trichloroethylene-contaminated groundwater: A pilot-scale study

The objectives of this pilot-scale study were to (1) evaluate the effectiveness of bioremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated groundwater with the supplement of slow polycolloid-releasing substrate (SPRS) (contained vegetable oil, cane molasses, surfactants) under reductive dechlorinating conditions, (2) apply gene analyses to confirm the existence of TCE-dechlorinating genes, and (3) apply the real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to evaluate the variations in TCE-dechlorinating bacteria (Dehalococcoides spp.). Approximately 350L of SPRS solution was supplied into an injection well (IW) and groundwater samples were collected and analyzed from IW and monitor wells periodically. Results show that the SPRS caused a rapid increase of the total organic carbon concentration (up to 5794mg/L), and reductive dechlorination of TCE was significantly enhanced. TCE dechlorination byproducts were observed and up to 99% of TCE removal (initial TCE concentration=1872μg/L) was observed after 50 days of operation. The population of Dehalococcoides spp. increased from 4.6×101 to 3.41×107cells/L after 20 days of operation. DNA sequencing results show that there were 31 bacterial species verified, which might be related to TCE biodegradation. Results demonstrate that the microbial analysis and real-time PCR are useful tools to evaluate the effectiveness of TCE reductive dechlorination.

Variability in the carbon isotope fractionation of trichloroethene on its reductive dechlorination by vitamin B12.

Stable carbon isotope fractionation through the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene by vitamin B12 was determined to assess the possibility of using stable carbon isotope analysis to determine the efficacy of remediation of trichloroethylene using vitamin B12. We elucidated the effects of environmental conditions, including the pH, reaction temperature, and vitamin B12 concentration, on the carbon isotope enrichment factor (ε). The ε values were relatively insensitive to the reaction temperature and vitamin B12 concentration, ranging from -15.7‰ to -16.2‰, with a mean of -15.9 ± 0.2‰, at different temperatures and vitamin B12 concentrations. Such a reproducible ε value could be particularly useful for estimating the extent of degradation in reactions in which a mass balance is difficult to achieve. However, changing the initial solution pH from 6.5 to 9.0 caused a notable change in the ε values, from -14.0‰ to -18.0‰. Reactions were investigated by calculating the apparent kinetic isotope effects for carbon, which, at 1.029-1.037, were smaller than the kinetic isotope effect values previously found for C-Cl bond cleavage. This indicates that a reaction other than the elimination of chloride may be a competitive degradation pathway. The dominant degradation pathway may be different for different initial solution pH values, and this will clearly influence carbon isotope fractionation. Therefore, if the ε value varies with reaction conditions, such as the solution pH, the calculations should take into account the actual environmental conditions that affect the rate limiting pathways.

Degradation of Trichloroethylene Contaminated Soil by Zero-Valent Iron Nanoparticles

Trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated soil has received extensive attention in the environmental issues. Nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) is considered as an excellent reduction catalyst due to fast degradation of chlorinated solvents. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate TCE removal from soil by surfactant modified nanoscale zero-valent iron (SNZVI). In this respect, fixed 500 g soil having a diameter range 0.5–1 mm was polluted with 10 mL TCE and put inside glass column of 2.5 cm diameter × 300 cm length. The NZVI solution was prepared from reduction of FeCL3 by NaBH4 and coating with 2.5 g nonionic surfactant (Tween 85) to produce iron nanoparticle concentration of 0.1 g/L. The prepared iron nanoparticle was poured into contaminated soil and left to stir at a constant rate for 24 days. The reductive dechlorination of TCE was measured as a function of increasing chloride ion. It was found that the TCE dechlorination in the presence of iron surfaces displayed pseudo first-order kinetics. The TCE degradation rate constant () is . Also, about 30% of TCE was removed within initial 6 days. The obtained specific rate constant () was and is lower than other studies carried into aqueous phase by about 23 orders of magnitude. Finally, the SNZVI was found to be effective and fully removed to TCE within 456 hours.

Influence of mixed-surfactant on reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene by zero-valent iron

Mixed nonionic and cationic surfactants were used to enhance the reductive dechlorination rate of trichloro- ethylene (TCE) with zero valent iron (ZVI). Among tested combinations of four cationic and three nonionic surfactants, a mixed surfactant system of hexadecyl-trimethyl ammonium (CTAB) and Brij30 at a mixing ratio of 1 : 1 with 0.5 critical micelle concentration (CMC) exhibited the highest reaction rate constant, 0.0269 h −1 ; the dechlorination rate constant of TCE with ZVI in the absence of surfactant was 0.0206 h −1 . The effect of this mixed surfactant on the reductive dechlorination of TCE was investigated using ZVI in a column to simulate field conditions. Unlike batch tests, column tests of the mixed surfactant system exhibited higher and lower TCE removal as compared to a nonionic and a cationic surfactant system, respectively. Consequently, if surfactants are applied for surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR), the performance of a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) system using ZVI to remove the residual TCE in ground- water might be affected by surfactant types; thus, the application should be carefully considered.

Impact of Vegetable Oil on Distribution of Trichloroethylene in Groundwater During Enhanced Bioremediation

Vegetable oils are increasingly being used as long-term carbon donors to stimulate reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE). Besides potential enhancement of biodegradation, the addition of vegetables oils may impact TCE fate and distribution within the aquifer by acting as non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL). Distribution coefficients for TCE between groundwater and four vegetable oils were determined using a slow-stir technique. Log vegetable oil/water distribution coefficients (log Kvw) were found to range from 1.0 to 2.56. TCE/vegetable oil distribution coefficients statistically increased with an increase in oil weathering while the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the water did not change over time.

Bioremediation of trichloroethylene contaminated groundwater using anaerobic process

Anaerobic remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated soil and groundwater was studied in laboratory setups. In this process fermentation of polymeric organic materials (POMS) produced volatile fatty acids (VFAs) that were electron donors in reductive dechlorination of TCE. Shredded peanut shell was selected as low cost POM and the experiments were set up in 500 ml Erlenmeyer flasks. In the setups, approximately 25 mg of leachate contaminated soil was used as the main source of microorganisms and about 5 g of shredded peanut shell (0.5-2.36 mm) was added to produce VFAs for dechlorination of TCE. In the first set of experiments, fermentation of soil and shredded peanut shell was studied and it was found that VFAs were produced continuously with increasing concentration (5.63 mM as CH3COOH from the first day to 17.17 in the 10th day of the experiment). During the fermentation, concentration of ammonia-nitrogen was 22-50 mg/L, the ratio of VFA to NH3 was 15.29-23.44 and pH was 5.24-6.00. These results show that the system was appropriate for microorganism activities. In the second set of experiments, TCE (approximately 48 mg/L) was added to the fermentation system and remediation of TCE by reductive dechlorination was studied. It was found that 0.04(+/-0.01) mg TCE adsorbed to a gram of soil and peanut shells at the beginning of the experiment and based on mass balance of the system, TCE concentration in water was linearly reduced at the rate of 0.0098 mg/hr.
