Bolt axial stress measurement method based on ultrasound multi-feature fusion

ABSTRACT There exist issues of ill-adaptability and low-accuracy in ultrasonic bolt stress measurement based on acoustic elasticity and scattering attenuation. Therefore, a bolt axial stress measurement method based on ultrasound multi-feature fusion is proposed in this paper. Firstly, ultrasound characteristic parameters based on the theory of acoustic elasticity are extracted, including the difference of time-of-flight (TOF) and the longitudinal wave attenuation coefficient in polycrystalline materials within the Rayleigh scattering range. Then, following the dimension reduction principle, the difference of TOF, attenuation coefficient, and clamping length are chosen as the input feature vectors for the fusion model. Subsequently, the SVR model is employed to establish a multi-feature fusion model for bolt axial stress measurement. Calibration and measurement experiments are conducted using the constructed experimental platform. Comparative analysis between the traditional measurement methods and the proposed method reveals that the SVR model can adapt to measurements of bolts with different lengths, overcoming the limitations of traditional methods. Furthermore, the measurement results of different fusion algorithms show that SVR yields significantly lower average relative errors in the measurement of the three bolts (3.35%, 4.44%, and 4.48%) compared to BP and RBF algorithms. This indicates higher measurement accuracy and immunity to low-stress effects.

Classification of Behaviour in Conventional and Slow-Growing Strains of Broiler Chickens Using Tri-Axial Accelerometers.

Behavioural states such as walking, sitting and standing are important in indicating welfare, including lameness in broiler chickens. However, manual behavioural observations of individuals are often limited by time constraints and small sample sizes. Three-dimensional accelerometers have the potential to collect information on animal behaviour. We applied a random forest algorithm to process accelerometer data from broiler chickens. Data from three broiler strains at a range of ages (from 25 to 49 days old) were used to train and test the algorithm, and unlike other studies, the algorithm was further tested on an unseen broiler strain. When tested on unseen birds from the three training broiler strains, the random forest model classified behaviours with very good accuracy (92%) and specificity (94%) and good sensitivity (88%) and precision (88%). With the new, unseen strain, the model classified behaviours with very good accuracy (94%), sensitivity (91%), specificity (96%) and precision (91%). We therefore successfully used a random forest model to automatically detect three broiler behaviours across four different strains and different ages using accelerometers. These findings demonstrated that accelerometers can be used to automatically record behaviours to supplement biomechanical and behavioural research and support in the reduction principle of the 3Rs.

Modal reduction principles: a parametric shift to graphs

Graph-based frames have been introduced as a logical framework which internalises an inherent boundary to knowability (referred to as ‘informational entropy’), due, e.g. to perceptual, evidential or linguistic limits. They also support the interpretation of lattice-based (modal) logics as hyper-constructive logics of evidential reasoning. Conceptually, the present paper proposes graph-based frames as a formal framework suitable for generalising Pawlak's rough set theory to a setting in which inherent limits to knowability exist and need to be considered. Technically, the present paper establishes systematic connections between the first-order correspondents of Sahlqvist modal reduction principles on Kripke frames, and on the more general relational environments of graph-based and polarity-based frames. This work is part of a research line aiming at: (a) comparing and inter-relating the various (first-order) conditions corresponding to a given (modal) axiom in different relational semantics; (b) recognising when first-order sentences in the frame-correspondence languages of different relational structures encode the same ‘modal content’; (c) meaningfully transferring relational properties across different semantic contexts. The present paper develops these results for the graph-based semantics, polarity-based semantics, and all Sahlqvist modal reduction principles. As an application, we study well known modal axioms in rough set theory (such as those corresponding to seriality, reflexivity, and transitivity) on graph-based frames and show that, although these axioms correspond to different first-order conditions on graph-based frames, their intuitive meaning is retained. This allows us to introduce the notion of hyperconstructivist approximation spaces as the subclass of graph-based frames defined by the first-order conditions corresponding to the same modal axioms defining classical generalised approximation spaces, and to transfer the properties and the intuitive understanding of different approximation spaces to the more general framework of graph-based frames. The approach presented in this paper provides a base for systematically comparing and connecting various formal frameworks in rough set theory, and for the transfer of insights across different frameworks.

Special considerations in managing pain and psychosocial distress in patients with opioid use disorder and cancer: the role of the supportive care and psycho-oncology interdisciplinary team.

People with a substance use disorder (SUD) have shortened lifespans due to complications from their substance use and challenges engaging with traditional health care settings and institutions. This impact on life expectancy is especially prominent in patients with co-occurring SUDs and cancer, and often has a much worse prognosis from the cancer than a similar patient without a SUD. Palliative care teams are experts in serious illness communication and symptom management and have become increasingly embedded in the routine care of patients with cancer. We argue that the skill set of palliative care teams is uniquely suited for addressing the needs of this oft marginalized group. We provide a comprehensive review of tools for addressing these needs, including medications that can both treat pain and opioid use disorder (OUD), and highlight psychosocial approaches to treating patients with OUD and cancer in a way that is respectful and effective. Using a trauma informed framework, we focus on the application of harm reduction principles from addiction medicine and the principles of clear communication, accompaniment, and emotional presence from palliative care to maximize support. We also focus on ways to reduce stigma in the delivery of care, by providing language that reduces barriers and increases patient engagement. Finally, we describe a clinic embedded within our institution's cancer center which aims to serve patients with cancer and SUDs, built on the framework of harm reduction, accompaniment and trauma informed care (TIC). Overall, we aim to provide context for addressing the common challenges that arise with patients with cancer and OUD, including the direct impact of psychosocial stress on substance use and cancer treatment, delays in disease directed treatment that can potentially impact further treatment options and outcomes, challenging pain management due to greater opioid debt, and potential loss of primary coping mechanism through substance use in the face of potential terminal diagnosis.

The results of this study show that after using the small term reduction principle, the equations to be solved are like first-order and second-order differential equations. The effect of migration between sites on the overall stochastic growth rate depends on the difference in expected growth rates and the variance of the fluctuating difference in growth rates. When fluctuations (variance) are large, a population can benefit from bursts of higher growth in sites that are worse on average. Such bursts become more probable as the between-site variance increases. Our results apply to many (≥ 2) sites, and reveal an interplay between the length of paths between sites, the average differences in site-specific growth rates, and the size of fluctuations. Our findings have implications for evolutionary biology as they provide conditions for departure from the reduction principle, and for ecological dynamics: even when there are superior sites in a sea of poor habitats, variability and habitat quality across space determine the importance of migration.

HONG KONG’S CIRCULAR ECONOMY ON PLASTICS: ARE THE ECONOMICS FAILING?

In the Special Administrative Region Hong Kong, municipal solid waste has grown substantially over the past two decades with plastic waste accounting for an increasingly large proportion. In response, the Hong Kong government trialled several schemes that centred on economic mechanisms and the circular economic principles of recycling and reduction to manage plastic bags and plastic beverage containers. As the results of these measures have been met with strong criticism, the present paper assesses the extent to which therein applied economic mechanisms realised a circular management of these streams. To explore this question, the paper relies on quantitative and qualitative field research combined with an analysis of a specifically designed public opinion survey. The findings indicate that price setting is a key element towards circularity for waste plastics in Hong Kong, yet it is not the sole determinant. Using an evolutionary institutional framework the paper shows that besides economics the incorporation of consumers’ and recycling stakeholders’ interests are key for effective regulations towards a circular economy on plastics in the city.

“In Sweden you are worthless. In Denmark you get an identity again” – on being perceived and received as a person who uses drugs in different drug policy settings

BackgroundPolicies to address substance use differ greatly between settings, where goals may range from zero-tolerance to harm reduction. Different approaches impact formats of care, policing, and even interpersonal interactions, and may play a role in the labelling and stigmatization of people who use drugs (PWUD). Where Sweden has a more restrictive policy, aiming to have a society free from drugs, Denmark has embraced harm reduction principles. The aim of this study was to explore PWUDs’ experiences of interpersonal interactions, policing, and service formats in the two countries.MethodsThe data consists of 17 qualitative semi-structured interviews with Swedish PWUD who have been in both Sweden and Denmark. Recruitment took place at harm reduction sites in both countries, and through snowball sampling.ResultsParticipants reflected on how they were perceived by those in public spaces, and received by care systems and personnel. In public settings in Sweden, participants felt they were ignored, rendered invisible, and lost their humanity. In Denmark, they were perceived and acknowledged, valued as people. This was simultaneously linked to being embodied by the availability of differing service offerings and policing practices, which solidified their “right to be out” in public. Reflecting on their reception in the treatment system, strict formatting in Sweden caused participants to feel that an identity was projected upon them, limiting their opportunities or growth of new facets of identity. Care relations in Denmark fostered more opportunity for autonomy and trust.ConclusionA zero-tolerance policy and associated public discourses could solidify and universalize stigmatizing categorizations as a central feature of PWUD identity and reception from those around them, exacerbating social exclusion. Conversely, harm reduction-centered policies fostered positive interactions between individuals with care providers, public, and police, which may promote inclusion, empowerment, and wellbeing.

How would a certification in harm reduction impact service delivery and the harm reduction workforce? A qualitative study

IntroductionHarm reduction utilizes evidence-based strategies to reduce the negative health and social impacts of substance use. As harm reduction services expand across the U.S. without the requirement of professional certification, variation in how the workforce is regarded and trained on harm reduction principles and practices persists. This study explores the harm reduction workforce's perspectives on how certification would impact service delivery and their profession. MethodsThe study employed purposive sampling to identify and survey administrators within a publicly available syringe services program directory (N = 168). This sub-study utilized thematic analysis to evaluate 152 respondents' answers to one dichotomous closed-ended question, “Would a certification in the harm reduction field be helpful?” followed by an open-ended response to the follow-up statement, “Based on your answer to the previous question about a certification to work in harm reduction, please explain why or why not.” Approximately 45 % of the respondents (n = 68) answered no, while 55 % (n = 84) answered yes. ResultsSeven themes emerged in total. Among those against harm reduction certification, the four themes were: (1) certification is exclusionary and creates barriers, (2) lived experience is more important than certification, (3) certification does not equate to skills, and (4) no regulatory body exists to oversee the certification process. The study identified three themes from individuals who indicated harm reduction certification was helpful: (1) certification helps standardize training, (2) certification validates/legitimizes the harm reduction field, and (3) low barriers to receiving certificates. ConclusionsThe study presents participants' perspectives for and against harm reduction certification emphasizing implications for service delivery and the workforce. Despite varying perceptions on how certification may advance or hinder the field, the sample was unified in their commitment to harm reduction practices and endorsement of its integral role in confronting the U.S. drug use epidemic. This study highlights how certification can impact state and federal harm reduction service delivery and promotes future research on ways to address the needs of harm reduction organizations and their workforce.

Determination and application study of optimal delay time for tunnel millisecond blasting based on interference vibration reduction method

In tunnel excavation, blasting is widely adopted as an efficient excavation method. However, the influence of vibration on tunnel surrounding rock and support structures during the blasting process cannot be ignored. In this study, based on the background of tunnel blasting construction, we theoretically analyze the reasonable range for selecting the optimal delay time, considering the wave superposition cancellation effect and rock fragmentation effect. We use field measured single-hole waveform and calculate superimposed predicted waveforms for different delay time through linear superposition. This allows us to determine the optimal delay time; it is then validated through numerical simulation and field experiment. The results indicate that, based on the principles of interference vibration reduction and rock fragmentation, the optimal delay time in theory should be in the range of 6.14–8.06 ms. By performing superposition calculation on the measured single-hole waveforms, we determined that the optimal delay time for continuous detonation of cut-holes is 7 ms. The delay time of 7 ms falls within a reasonable millisecond range and it is consistent with the results of numerical simulation. When the optimal delay time was applied to field blasting, the measured vibration waveforms exhibited uniform distribution. Compared to blasting without delay, the peak vibration velocity of the cut-holes decreased from 2.08 cm/s to 0.20 cm/s, and the dominant frequency band shifted from 20 Hz–60 Hz to 30 Hz–120 Hz. This achieved the desired effects of reducing vibration and enhancing frequency. These findings can serve as a reference for future similar engineering projects.

Assessing the impact of green and roasted coffee extracts on colorectal cancer cells in a 3D cell culture model

BackgroundColorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and deadly malignant neoplasms worldwide. It is associated with multiple lifestyle risk factors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, alcohol and red meat consumption, smoking, and obesity. Consequently, studies have been conducted on the protective activity of bioactive compounds present in some foods against CRC, making it necessary to understand how diet can affect human health. In this sense, coffee, the second most consumed beverage in the world, is a major source of phytochemicals associated with a possible antitumor effect on CRC cells. PurposeThis study aimed to analyze the chemopreventive potential of green and roasted coffee extracts on HT-29 CRC cells cultured in 2D and 3D models. MethodsFlow cytometry was employed to quantify propidium iodide and DiOC6 uptake, ROS production, phosphatidylserine exposure, and cell cycle progression. In addition, cells and spheroids were analyzed by light microscopy to identify morphological changes. ResultsThe results showed that, under the employed conditions, treatment with both extracts had a concentration-dependent cytotoxic effect. Decreased cell viability was associated with mitochondrial membrane hyperpolarization, prooxidant effect, increased phosphatidylserine exposure, and changes in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. ConclusionFor the evaluated cell markers, 3D cultures required higher doses to achieve significant cytotoxic effects when compared to monolayer cultures. Since 3D cultures favor the formation of complex cell–cell interactions, this model offers a closer look at in vivo conditions for evaluating the toxicity and preclinical efficacy of potential chemopreventive agents for CRC. The experimental evidence from this study supports the 3R principles of replacement, reduction, and refinement for toxicological research in the pharmaceutical industry.

The study on mechanical properties of the vibration isolator

First of all, the working principle of vibration reduction of the vibration isolator is briefly introduced. The vibration isolator adopts the design ideal of no formant and adopts a damping locking mechanism in the resonance region to solve the problem of vibration amplification of the system. The purpose of vibration attenuation is to use small damping in the attenuation region. Then, through the numerical simulation calculation method, it can be obtained that the isolator has a good vibration isolation effect under different effects of shock and impact, and the effective rate is about 90%, which fully guarantees the structural safety of the test equipment. Finally, according to an example, a model is established to study the influence of equipment weight and center of gravity design deviation on the natural frequency and natural frequency point vibration transmission efficiency of the equipment. Through analysis, it can be found that in the case of no abnormality of the equipment, the frequency is changed in the range of 1∼160 Hz, and the ratio of the system response to excitation is not more than 2, which meets the design requirements.

The Role of Pain and Blood Simulation of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in Emotion Regulation Among Adolescents With Depression Based on the Principle of Harm Reduction: An Experimental Study

This study aims to explore the role of pain and blood in emotion regulation during nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents with depression, which included 108 depressed adolescents with NSSI and 110 depressed adolescents without NSSI, to assess the impact of pain and blood on subjective emotional states, and pulse frequency (Pf), respiratory frequency (Rf), galvanic skin response (GSR), and electromyography (EMG). Significant condition×group×time interactions for positive emotions (β = −0.082, SE = 0.026, P = 0.002), Pf (β = −0.045, SE = 0.013, P = 0.001) and GSR (β = −0.041, SE = 0.018, P = 0.027) were found, indicating a significant increase in positive emotions and a significant decrease in Pf and GSR in the NSSI group post-pain/blood stimulus, especially within the first 10 seconds (for Pf, GSR)/3.5 minutes (for positive emotions) following stimulus. And Pf and GSR showed a more pronounced decrease over time in the NSSI group during the pain condition than in the blood condition. These findings highlight the significance of pain and blood in emotion regulation for adolescents with depression who engage in NSSI. Moreover, clinical healthcare professionals may be inspired by the pain and blood stimulus of NSSI based on the harm reduction principle, which provides new ideas for exploring potential interventions that can assist adolescents with depression regulate their emotions and reduce the occurrence of NSSI. And more relevant studies need to be carried out in this area.

Animal models for partial heart transplantation.

Partial heart transplantation delivers growing heart valve implants by transplanting the part of the heart containing the necessary heart valve only. In contrast to heart transplantation, partial heart transplantation spares the native ventricles. This has important implications for partial heart transplant biology, including the allowable ischemia time, optimal graft preservation, primary graft dysfunction, immune rejection, and optimal immunosuppression. Exploration of partial heart transplant biology will depend on suitable animal models. Here we review our experience with partial heart transplantation in rodents, piglets, and non-human primates. This review is based on our experience with partial heart transplantation using over 100 rodents, over 50 piglets and one baboon. Suitable animal models for partial heart transplantation include rodent heterotopic partial heart transplantation, piglet orthotopic partial heart transplantation, and non-human primate partial heart xenotransplantation. Rodent models are relatively cheap and offer extensive availability of research tools. However, rodent open-heart surgery is technically not feasible. This limits rodents to heterotopic partial heart transplant models. Piglets are comparable in size to children. This allows for open-heart surgery using clinical grade equipment for orthoptic partial heart transplantation. Piglets also grow rapidly, which is useful for studying partial heart transplant growth. Finally, nonhuman primates are immunologically most closely related to humans. Therefore, nonhuman primates are most suitable for studying partial heart transplant immunobiology and xenotransplantation. Animal research is a privilege that is contingent on utilitarian ethics and the 3R principles of replacement, reduction and refinement. This privilege allows the research community to seek fundamental knowledge about partial heart transplantation, and to apply this knowledge to enhance the health of children who require partial heart transplants.

Government contribution to community empowerment based on local potential in Percut village-Deli Serdang Regency

Indonesia is a country that is very rich in marine resources. The extraordinary potential of Indonesia's natural resources can be utilized for the welfare of society. This potential helps Indonesia get out of poverty and become a more developed country. Poverty is one of the problems that until now requires action. Increased community empowerment is needed to strengthen the principle of poverty reduction based on local potential. This research aims to get an overview of how the Village government's contribution to local potential-based community empowerment in Percut Village, as well as the impact of activities carried out by the government on the community. In this research using Qualitative method through Descriptive approach. The location of this research was Percut Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency. This research consists of 5 resource persons. The data collection techniques used are observation, interview and documentation. The data analysis technique is carried out by data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the contribution of the village government through various programs and activities, the village government provides counseling, training, empowerment and assistance in the management and sustainable use of marine resources. In addition, the impact of activities carried out by the government on the community consists of social and economic impacts. The social impact of the community's life is well maintained and the economic impact of the community has increased.

A qualitative exploration of health care workers’ approaches to relational harm reduction in HIV primary care settings

BackgroundStructural harm reduction is an approach to care for people who use drugs (PWUD) that incorporates services and resources (e.g., naloxone, sterile syringes). As conceptualized in our previous research, harm reduction is also “relational,” encompassing a patient-provider relationship that is non-judgmental and respectful of patients’ autonomy. Little is known about health care workers’ (HCW) knowledge or attitudes towards harm reduction beyond structural strategies, whose availability and legality vary across geographical settings. To operationalize how relational harm reduction is both characterized and employed in HIV care settings, where nearly half of patients have a diagnosed substance use disorder, we qualitatively explored HCWs’ knowledge of and use of harm reduction via individual in-depth interviews.MethodsOur study sample included three HIV clinics, one in Birmingham, Alabama (AL) and two in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (PA). We conducted individual interviews with n = 23 health care workers via Zoom, using a semi-structured interview guide to probe for questions around health care workers’ attitudes towards and experiences with providing care to PWH who use drugs and their knowledge of and attitudes towards relational and structural harm reduction. Data was analyzed in Dedoose using thematic analysis.ResultsQualitative analyses revealed two primary themes, Continuum of Relational Harm Reduction in Practice and Limited Harm Reduction Training. Nearly all HCWs (n = 19, 83%) described a patient interaction or expressed a sentiment that corresponded with the principles of relational harm reduction. Yet, over half of participants (n = 14, 61%) used language to describe PWH who use drugs that was stigmatizing or described an interaction that was antithetical to the principles of relational harm reduction. Five HCWs, all from Birmingham, were unaware of the term ‘harm reduction.’ Few HCWs had any harm reduction training, with most learning about harm reduction from webinars/conferences or on the job.ConclusionOur findings suggest that relational harm reduction in HIV care settings is practiced along a continuum, and that a range of behaviors exist even within individual HCWs (e.g., used stigmatizing terms such as “addict” but also described patient interactions that reflected patients’ autonomy). Tinjauan Kebijakan: Evaluasi Efektivitas Upaya Penanggulangan Bencana di Desa Ciwangi

Ciwangi Village in Garut Regency, has the potential for disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides. Therefore, evaluating the effectiveness of disaster management efforts in Ciwangi Village is crucial for mitigating risks and protecting local communities. This research aims to explore the dynamics of disasters that occurred in Ciwangi Village and evaluate the level of effectiveness of mitigation policies, starting from the structural level to the village. This research uses qualitative methods by reviewing Regional Regulations (Perda) related to disaster management in Ciwangi Village, Garut Regency. The review was carried out using in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The analysis was carried out by detailing the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) principles at the local level. The results of the analysis are then linked to Chamber Theory to evaluate the effectiveness of policy coordination and implementation at the village level. The research results show that disaster mitigation efforts in Ciwangi Village are still weak in terms of understanding disaster risk, disaster risk management, investment in disaster risk reduction, and disaster preparedness.
