The objectives are to: 1) describe parent-child interaction patterns that foster the development of oppositional and defiant behavior; and 2) review positive parenting practices that reduce behavior problems and improve overall child development and functioning. Disruptive behavior disorders are early-onset and high-prevalence conditions. Parent behavior management training (PBMT) is one of the strongest evidence-based interventions in all of child and adolescent psychiatry. However, PBMT is not readily available in clinical practice and is not routinely provided in clinical training programs.
