Microplastic contamination accelerates soil carbon loss through positive priming

The priming effect, i.e., the changes in soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition following fresh organic carbon (C) inputs is known to influence C storage in terrestrial ecosystems. Microplastics (particle size <5 mm) are ubiquitous in soils due to the increasing use and often inadequate end-of-life management of plastics. Conventional polyethylene and bio-degradable (PHBV) plastics contain large amounts of C within their molecular structure, which can be assimilated by microorganisms. However, the extent and direction of the potential priming effect induced by microplastics is unclear. As such, we added 14C-labeled glucose to investigate how background polyethylene and PHBV microplastics (1 %, w/w) affect SOM decomposition and its potential microbial mechanisms in a short-term. The cumulative CO2 emission in soil contaminated with PHBV was 42–53 % higher than under Polyethylene contaminated soil after 60-day incubation. Addition of glucose increased SOM decomposition and induced a positive priming effect, as a consequence, caused a negative net soil C balance (−59 to −132 μg C g−1 soil) regardless of microplastic types. K-strategists dominated in the PHBV-contaminated soils and induced 72 % higher positive priming effects as compared to Polyethylene-contaminated soils (160 vs. 92 μg C g−1 soil). This was attributed to the enhanced decomposition of recalcitrant SOM to acquire nitrogen. The stronger priming effect associated in PHBVs can be attributed to cooperative decomposition among fungi and bacteria, which metabolize more recalcitrant C in PHBV. Moreover, comparatively higher calorespirometric ratios, lower substrate use efficiency, and larger enzyme activity but shorter turnover time of enzymes indicated that soil contaminated with PHBV release more energy, and have a more efficient microbial catabolism and are more efficient in SOM decomposition and nutrient resource uptake. Overall, microplastics, (especially bio-degradable microplastics) can alter biogeochemical cycles with significant negative consequences for C sequestration via increasing SOM decomposition in agricultural soils and for regional and global C budgets.

How nitrate and ammonium impact soil organic carbon transformation with reference to aggregate size

While nitrogen (N) deposition and over-fertilization enrich N in soil, it is unclear how it impacts soil organic carbon (SOC) transformation at the aggregate scale. Herein, a 90-day study reveals the transformation mechanisms of SOC in soil aggregates under nitrate and ammonium enrichment conditions. Results showed that nitrate treatment (NT) and ammonium treatment (AT) significantly increased SOC content by 15.6 % and 18.9 %, respectively. In addition, NT increased SOC accrual in large macro-aggregates (LMA), while AT increased SOC accrual in small macro-aggregates (SMA) and micro-aggregates (MA). Further analysis of pyrolysis products showed that N enrichment drove the transformation of labile soil organic matter (SOM) composition into recalcitrant SOM, with polysaccharides declining from 19–30 % to 2–13 %, while lipids rose from 18–27 % to 33–45 %. LMA and SMA contained more aromatic compounds than MA. This is linked to the inhibition of the expression of C degradation function genes, while almost all genes encoding SOC degradation are down-regulated under N enrichment. In the meantime, NT increased the abundance of genes encoding the degradation of N-containing compounds in LMA. Moreover, NO3− enrichment exerted a higher inhibitory effect on labile SOC degradation while NH4+ enrichment substantially inhibited recalcitrant SOC. Finally, Random Forest analysis confirmed that N enrichment elevated the importance of N-containing compounds' metabolism, which diminished when the size of soil aggregates decreased. In contrast, the importance of genes encoding saccharides and cellulose metabolism increased in smaller aggregates. This study highlights that both N type and aggregate size were determining factors in shaping SOC transformation in the N enrichment process.

Soil organic matter persistence in hyperhumic colluvial soils caused by palaeofires, root inputs and mineral binding

Understanding the formation of long-term persistent soil organic matter (SOM) is key to optimizing soil management and predicting the response of the terrestrial organic carbon (OC) pool to climate change, yet our knowledge of the soil-type dependent weight of different stabilization pathways (e.g., recalcitrance and mineral binding) is fragmentary. Owing to their stratigraphy, the exceptionally SOM-rich (up to 2 m of mineral soil with >5% OC) colluvial slope deposits of Atlantic Europe (Haplic Umbrisol [colluvic/hyperhumic]) are archives of palaeo-environmental conditions including SOM formation pathways. The objective of this study was to determine how the different drivers of persistent SOM formation influenced the formation of these organic-rich soils. For this purpose, we use Holocene (∼9000 yrs) molecular composition records obtained from pyrolysis-GC–MS (Py-GC–MS) and thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation (THM-GC–MS). The results emphasize three pathways to stability (i.e., persistence on millennial timescales): 1) palaeofires that generated recalcitrant pyrogenic SOM, 2) release of root-derived aliphatic macromolecules (suberin-like SOM), and 3) formation of microbial necromass. Pathways 1 and 2 are controlled by land use: Pathway 1 was relatively important under intense anthropogenic fire regimes and pyrophytic shrubland expansion; Pathway 2 was stimulated during early forest phases and under pasture conditions, when past societies focused vegetation management on grazing instead of fire; Pathway 3 was controlled by binding with aluminium-dominated mineral phases. However, we found indications that Pathway 2 (suberin input and preservation) relied partially on sorptive preservation as well. Aided by structured equation modeling (SEM), we show that the formation of persistent SOM pools was driven by balanced weights of i) microbial vs. plant-derived SOM and ii) intrinsic chemical properties of SOM (recalcitrance continuum) vs. mineral binding/occlusion, which varied in keeping with interactions between past land use, topography and vegetation. These findings are inconsistent with the prevalent paradigm of persistent SOM formation by sorptive/occlusive preservation of microbial necromass alone.

Carbon sequestration in coastal sediments via in situ capping with steel slag

A 4000 m2 steel slag (SS) bed was constructed in the brackish water area for water quality remediation in 2017. This study demonstrates the ability of SS to stimulate carbon sequestration based on one-year pilot and in situ SS beds. The pilot SS bed increased the soil organic matter (SOM) content by 5.1 wt %, sequestering sewage-derived organic carbon (Corg) as SOM. Notably, recalcitrant SOM increased by over 40 %, indicating long-term retention of Corg in the sediment. SS increased the Corg density in the sediment by approximately two times, exceeding that of the dense carbon ecosystems found in global seagrass meadows and peatlands. The complexation of the low-molecular-weight Corg with iron in SS was the main pathway for Corg fixation. Benthic animal investigations showed that SS capping fostered an anaerobic fauna ecosystem, aiding biotic Corg sequestration. Algae proliferation on the SS bed suggested complex benthic ecosystems with photosynthetic carbon fixation. Overall, SS beds offer a new abiotic carbon sequestration pathway with environmental restoration benefits; in situ capping with metal-containing material is potentially more economical and sustainable compared to traditional landfilling.

Nitrogen deposition raises temperature sensitivity of soil organic matter decomposition in subtropical forest

Subtropical ecosystems are strongly affected by nitrogen (N) deposition, impacting soil organic matter (SOM) availability and stocks. Here we aimed to reveal the effects of N deposition on i) the structure and functioning of microbial communities and ii) the temperature sensitivity (Q10) of SOM decomposition. Phosphorus (P) limited evergreen forest in Guangdong Province, southeastern China, was selected, and N deposition (factor level: N (100 kg N ha−1 y−1 (NH4NO3)) and control (water), arranged into randomized complete block design (n = 3)) was performed during 2.5 y. After that soils from 0 to 20 cm were collected, analyzed for the set of parameters and incubated at 15, and 25, and 35 °C for 112 days. N deposition increased the microbial biomass N and the content of fungal and Gram-positive bacterial biomarkers; activities of beta-glucosidase (BG) and acid phosphatase (ACP) also increased showing the intensification of SOM decomposition. The Q10 of SOM decomposition under N deposition was 1.66 and increased by 1.4 times than under control. Xylosidase (BX), BG, and ACP activities increased with temperature under N but decreased with the incubation duration, indicating either low production and/or decomposition of enzymes. Activities of polyphenol-(PPO) and peroxidases (POD) were higher under N than in the control soil and were constant during the incubation showing the intensification of recalcitrant SOM decomposition. At the early incubation stage (10 days), the increase of Q10 of CO2 efflux was explained by the activities of BX, BQ, ACP, and POD and the quality of the available dissolved organic matter pool. At the later incubation stages (112 days), the drop of Q10 of CO2 efflux was due to the depletion of the labile organic substances and the shift of microbial community structure to K-strategists. Thus, N deposition decoupled the effects of extracellular enzyme activities from microbial community structure on Q10 of SOM decomposition in the subtropical forest soil.

Warming promotes the decomposition of oligotrophic bacterial-driven organic matter in paddy soil

The ongoing global warming is causing paddy soil to come under threat by hitherto unseen levels of carbon and nitrogen loss. The mechanism of soil organic matter (SOM) components and microbial metabolism responding to increased temperature is complicated; for example, the temperature sensitivity (Q10) of SOM decomposition in rice topsoil and subsoil remains poorly understood. In this study, 0–30 cm columns of undisturbed paddy soil were collected and incubated at 5, 15, or 25 °C for 117 days to investigate the effect of temperature on SOM decomposition and microbial characteristics in different soil layers. Results showed that Q10 of subsoil (15–30 cm) was more than twice that of topsoil (0–15 cm), indicating that SOM mineralisation in subsoil was facilitated more by temperature than that in topsoil. Warming promoted the decomposition of recalcitrant SOM and reduced the fluorescent intensity of dissolved organic matter. Increased temperature exerted no significant effect on microbial biomass, but it did enhance the relative abundance of oligotrophic bacteria and promote anabolism. Therefore, recalcitrant SOM decomposition driven by oligotrophic bacteria was more sensitive to warming than labile organic matter consumption mediated by copiotrophic bacteria. Our findings revealed the underlying mechanisms by which elevating temperature promoted SOM mineralisation, thereby emphasising the need to remain vigilant regarding the threat to carbon dynamics in deep soil poised by global climate changes.

Evidence for the formation of fused aromatic ring structures in an organic soil profile in the early diagenesis

The presence of fused aromatic ring (FAR) structures in soil define the stability of the recalcitrant soil organic matter (RSOM). FAR are important skeletal features in RSOM that contribute to its extended residence time. During the early diagenesis, FAR structures are formed through condensation and polymerization of biomolecules produced during plant residue and microbial product decay. Molecular level characterization of the RSOM extracted from an organic soil profile gives important insights into the formation of FAR. Advanced solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, including recoupled long-range C–H dipolar dephasing experiments on extracted humic acids (HA) showed that they contain diagenetically formed FAR different from charcoal and lignin. Peaks characteristic of FAR are observed at all depths in the soil profile, with a greater prevalence observed in the HA extracts from the clay soil layer at the bottom. In the clay soil layer, 78% of the aromatic carbon was non-protonated, and this was 2.2-fold higher than the topsoil. These data further strengthen our understanding of the humification process that could occur in early diagenesis and help explain the importance of incorporating diagenesis as an important phenomenon for long-term carbon sequestration in soil.

Ectomycorrhizal effects on decomposition are highly dependent on fungal traits, climate, and litter properties: A model-based assessment

It has been proposed that competition between ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi and free-living saprotrophs for resources like nitrogen (N) slows decomposition and increases the soil carbon storage in ECM ecosystems compared to arbuscular (AM) ecosystems. However, empirical evidence for the generality of such ECM effects is equivocal, and confounding mechanisms have been proposed that affect the magnitude and direction of ECM effects on soil carbon. Here we conduct a theoretical modeling experiment, where we explicitly incorporate mycorrhizal processes into the Carbon, Organisms, Rhizosphere, and Protection in the Soil Environment (CORPSE) model. We use the model to explore the conditions under which ECM N acquisition processes can induce stronger saprotrophic N limitation and result in slower decomposition rates and greater soil organic carbon accumulation compared to AM processes. We found that the ECM fungi more strongly inhibited decomposition when litter inputs were N-depleted and relatively recalcitrant and when ECM fungi possessed a strong capacity to mine N from both recalcitrant soil organic matter and microbial necromass. Climate and seasonality also played a role as the ECM competition effect was strongest at low mean annual temperatures and when litterfall peaked seasonally. Priming effects driven by high root exudation rates in ECM-dominated systems could overwhelm the competition effect and reduce soil carbon under some circumstances. The ECM effect on decomposition in our simulations was highly context dependent. Based on our model results, we expect to see a strong ECM competition effect in temperate deciduous and boreal forests with relatively recalcitrant litter inputs, and with ECM fungi that produce oxidases and necromass-degrading enzymes. However, even a relatively strong ECM competition effect on decomposition only increased soil organic carbon accumulation by ∼10%.

Pristine and Sulfidized Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Promote the Release and Decomposition of Organic Carbon in the Legume Rhizosphere.

The effects and mechanisms of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and their aging products, sulfidized (s-) ZnO NPs, on the carbon cycling in the legume rhizosphere are still unclear. We observed that, after 30 days of cultivation, in the rhizosphere soil of Medicago truncatula, under ZnO NP and s-ZnO NP treatments, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were significantly increased by 1.8- to 2.4-fold compared to Zn2+ treatments, although the soil organic matter (SOM) contents did not change significantly. Compared to Zn2+ additions, the additions of NPs significantly induced the production of root metabolites such as carboxylic acids and amino acids and also stimulated the growth of microbes involved in the degradations of plant-derived and recalcitrant SOM, such as bacteria genera RB41 and Bryobacter, and fungi genus Conocybe. The bacterial co-occurrence networks indicated that microbes associated with SOM formation and decomposition were significantly increased under NP treatments. The adsorption of NPs by roots, the generation of root metabolites (e.g., carboxylic acid and amino acid), and enrichment of key taxa (e.g., RB41 and Gaiella) were the major mechanisms by which ZnO NPs and s-ZnO NPs drove DOC release and SOM decomposition in the rhizosphere. These results provide new perspectives on the effect of ZnO NPs on agroecosystem functions in soil-plant systems.

Sequential extraction of labile and recalcitrant fractions of soil organic matter: A case study focusing on antimony (Sb) in humic acids, fulvic acids and humin fractions of long-term aged contaminated soils

Soil organic matter (SOM) plays a key role in environmental chemistry of macro and micro nutrients as well as heavy metal (loids). In this research, a modified sequential extraction scheme was used to isolate labile and recalcitrant SOM from organic rich soils after 18 months of ageing with antimony. Humic substances were extracted with a mixture of 0.5 M sodium hydroxide +0.1 M sodium pyrophosphate solution from soils. Then soils deprived of humic substances were sequentially subjected to extraction with glycerol, citric acid, pre-treated with acid and extracted with boiling alkali mixture. The humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) of isolated SOM fractions were separated and HAs been characterized using FTIR, 1H NMR, and UV-VIS. Acid-alkali treatment of the most recalcitrant SOM fraction (A1-ROM) led to the extraction of sparingly soluble, highly aromatic compound with considerable amounts of N (44% of the extractable N), possibly due to the breakdown of bounds between aromatic rings and amine functional groups. Nevertheless, the highest content of C and TOC was associated with the glycerol extractable SOM. Substantial amounts of Fe and Al were extracted with glycerol, resulting in a dramatic rise of Sb in SOM extracts. The largest increase (60%) in Sb concentrations was observed after the removal of Fe with citric acid. The humic substances (HS) were responsible for 63% of extractable Sb, whereas even after exhaustive alkali extractions 22% of the total Sb remained in the residual humin fraction. Within the HS fraction, 95% of antimony was associated with the low molecular weight FAs. Antimony concentrations in organic fractions correlated significantly with TOC and N contents, possibly due to the role of amine functional groups in Sb complexation. The results of this research highlight the importance of Fe–Al-SOM bridging and humin fraction in sequestration of Sb in recalcitrant SOM pools.

The Effects of Natural Humus Material Amendment on Soil Organic Matter and Integrated Fertility in the Black Soil of Northeast China: Preliminary Results

The input of exogenous organic materials is an effective way to improve soil organic matter (SOM) content in cropland. The exploration of the impact of new organic materials such as woody peat on black soil fertility can provide an important reference for preventing the degradation of black soil in Northeast China. In this study, the effects of adding woody peat to SOM and the soil-integrated fertility of black cropland were studied by seven treatments (no organic matter addition, CK; crop straw returning, SR; decomposed straw addition, DS; organic manure addition, OM; 6 t/ha woody peat addition, LWP; 10.5 t/ha natural humus material addition, MWP; and 15 t/ha natural humus material addition, HWP). The results show that natural humus material additions (LWP, MWP, and HWP treatments) could significantly increase SOM (increased by 4.79~9.41 g/kg), labile SOM (increased by 2.49~4.52 g/kg), and recalcitrant SOM (increased by 2.13~6.39 g/kg) components, respectively. For comparison, traditional organic material inputs (SR, DS, and OM treatments) had no significant effect on SOM but induced an increase in the labile SOM component in the following year. This study also found that natural humus material additions could improve soil-integrated fertility in a year term, especially in promoting SOM accumulation. However, organic manure amendment showed both the advantage of increasing soil fertility slightly and the disadvantage of increasing soil salt sharply. In conclusion, compared with traditional exogenous organic materials, the natural humus material amendment technique can rapidly increase the total SOM quantity and its different stability components and has a great effect in improving the integrated fertility of black soil. Thus, it is of significance to further study the potential of natural humus material amendment in the fertility of black soil in future.

Qualitative and Quantitative Changes in Soil Organic Compounds in Central European Oak Forests with Different Annual Average Precipitation

The various climate scenarios consistently predict warming and drying of forests in Hungary. Soils play a significant role in the long-term sequestration of atmospheric CO2, while in other cases they can also become net carbon emitters. Therefore, it is important to know what can be expected regarding future changes in the carbon storage capacity of soils in forests. We used precipitation gradient studies to solve this problem, using a type of “space–time” substitution. In this research, we primarily examined the quality parameters of soil organic matter (SOM) to investigate how climate change transforms the ratio of the main SOM compound groups in soils. For our studies, we applied elemental and 13C and 15N isotopic ratio analysis, NMR analysis, FT-IR spectra analysis, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses to measure SOM chemistry in samples from different oak forests with contrasting mean annual precipitation from Central Europe. Our results showed that soil organic carbon (SOC) was lower in soils of humid forests due to the enhanced decomposition processes and the leaching of Ca, which stabilizes SOM; however, in particular, the amount of easily degradable SOM compounds (e.g., thermolabile SOM, O-alkyl carbon, carboxylic and carbonyl carbon) decreased. In dry forest soils, the amount of recalcitrant SOM (e.g., thermostable SOM, alkyl carbon, aromatic and phenolic carbon and organo–mineral complexes stabilized by Ca increased, but the amount of easily degradable SOM increased further. The main conclusion of our study is that SOC can increase in forests that become drier, compensating somewhat for the decrease in forest plant biomass.

Fire severity and post‐fire mulching effects on N transformation rates of temperate soils during the first critical winter–spring period

AbstractWildfires are increasing worldwide and, therefore, the extents of their on‐ and off‐site impacts are particularly important on soil erosion and nutrient cycles. To mitigate post‐fire erosion, mulching is increasingly being used, but its effects on the nitrogen (N) cycle are poorly known. To fill this gap of knowledge, gross N fluxes were modelled with Ntrace to compare with unburnt soils (US) the effects of intermediate (BI) and high severity (BH) burning, and post‐fire straw mulching (BIM and BHM). Two wildfires, two‐time points after the fire and 20 soil‐treatment combinations were studied. The mineralization of soil organic N to NH4+ (MSON) increased in BI (1.9–6.9×) with respect to US, with no clear trends observed in BH and mulched treatments. In most soils, NH4+ immobilisation in labile () and recalcitrant soil organic matter (SOM) () was more important than abiotic NH4+ fixation () and together were larger (3.5–11×) in BI than in US, while contrasting results were found depending on time after a fire (BH, BHM, BIM) and wildfire characteristics (BHM, BIM). Autotrophic nitrification () was included in the best model for all soils, whereas heterotrophic nitrification (OSON) was undetectable in most BH soils. Total nitrification ( + OSON) decreased with time after the fire in BH, increased in US and BI, and was differently affected by mulching depending on fire severity and time from the fire. While NO3− immobilisation () was frequently modelled only for BI soils, the dissimilatory NO3− reduction to NH4+ (DNRA) was retained in the best models for all soils and it was reduced by soil burning, whereas a short‐lived increase was induced by mulching. Denitrification (), modelled for most soils, was negatively affected by burning and positively by mulching. In summary, wildfires tended to increase MSON and , decrease DNRA and and had no clear influence on and nitrification. These effects are usually mitigated by mulching which, however, tended to enhance nitrification.Highlights Direction and magnitude of changes in soil gross N fluxes depend on fire severity. Usually, wildfires increased MSON and , and decreased DNRA and . No clear post‐fire trend was found for and nitrification. Fire effects on gross N fluxes are (partially) counterbalanced by mulching.

Decomposition of soil organic matter by ectomycorrhizal fungi: Mechanisms and consequences for organic nitrogen uptake and soil carbon stabilization

A major fraction of nitrogen (N) in boreal forest soils is found in organic forms associated with soil organic matter (SOM) and mineral particles. The capacity of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal symbionts to access this N is debated, considering that these fungi have lost many of the genes for decomposing organic matter that were present in their saprotrophic ancestors. To gain a molecular-level understanding of the N-mining processes in ECM fungi, we developed an experimental approach where the processes of decomposition were studied in parallel with the changes in the structure and properties of the organic matter. We showed that ECM fungi have significant capacities to assimilate organic N associated with SOM and mineral surfaces. The decomposition mechanisms differ between species, reflecting the lignocellulose decomposition mechanisms found in their saprotrophic ancestors. During N-mining, the ECM fungi processed the SOM to a material with increased adsorptive properties to iron oxide mineral particles. Two pathways contributed to these changes: Extracellular modifications of the SOM and secretion of mineral surface reactive metabolites. Some of these metabolites have iron(III)-reducing activities and can participate in extracellular Fenton reactions and redox reactions at iron oxide mineral surfaces. We conclude that the traditional framework for understanding organic N acquisition by ECM fungi from recalcitrant SOM must be extended to a framework that includes how those decomposition activities affect the stabilization and reactivity of mineral-associated SOM. The activity through these complex networks of reactions is decisive for the overall effect of ECM fungal decomposition on nutrients and C-cycling in forest ecosystems.

Responses of Q10 to anthropogenic soil redistribution: Synthetic effects of SOM composition and r/K-shifts of microbial community

The temperature sensitivity of soil respiration (Q10) is a pivotal parameter for forecasting the fate of soil carbon (C) under global warming. Although a plethora of studies have elucidated the changes in Q10 in farmland or natural ecosystems, the response of Q10 to soil redistribution remains unclear. A simulated anthropogenic soil redistribution experiment by examining subsoil exposure (E20) and topsoil addition (A20) was performed to explore the influences of soil organic matter (SOM) composition and r/K-shifts of microbial community on Q10. Compared with the undisturbed soil, the average annual Q10 in the E20 plot was significantly increased, whereas the mean annual Q10 in the A20 plot decreased. The ratios of CC to COO and CC to CO, which indicate the stability of SOM, were significantly increased by 14.8%− 44.2% and 33.9%− 45.4% in the E20 plot but decreased by 18.6%− 28.1% and 3.8%− 11.2% in the A20 plot, respectively. The ratios of oligotrophs to copiotrophs in both the bacterial and fungal communities were significantly increased in the E20 plot (K-shift) but decreased in the A20 plot (r-shift). The β-D-xylosidase and cellobiohydrolase activities in the E20 plot were significantly decreased but prominently increased in the A20 plot, whereas the activity of polyphenol oxidase showed the opposite trend. The high aromaticity of recalcitrant SOM in the E20 plot determined the prevalence of K-shift in the bacterial and fungal communities, which might be attributed to the production of enzymes that decompose recalcitrant SOM, which then further enhanced Q10 and vice versa. Overall, our findings indicated that the feedback of ecological strategy of microbial community on the changes in SOM functional groups should be considered when evaluating the response of regional C cycling to anthropogenic soil redistribution.

Microbial functional changes mark irreversible course of Tibetan grassland degradation

The Tibetan Plateau’s Kobresia pastures store 2.5% of the world’s soil organic carbon (SOC). Climate change and overgrazing render their topsoils vulnerable to degradation, with SOC stocks declining by 42% and nitrogen (N) by 33% at severely degraded sites. We resolved these losses into erosion accounting for two-thirds, and decreased carbon (C) input and increased SOC mineralization accounting for the other third, and confirmed these results by comparison with a meta-analysis of 594 observations. The microbial community responded to the degradation through altered taxonomic composition and enzymatic activities. Hydrolytic enzyme activities were reduced, while degradation of the remaining recalcitrant soil organic matter by oxidative enzymes was accelerated, demonstrating a severe shift in microbial functioning. This may irreversibly alter the world´s largest alpine pastoral ecosystem by diminishing its C sink function and nutrient cycling dynamics, negatively impacting local food security, regional water quality and climate.

Soil organic matter pools response to perennial grain cropping and nitrogen fertilizer

Carbon sequestration in agricultural soils can play a pivotal role in the mitigation of accelerating climate change. Our research evaluated a continuum of agricultural cropping systems, including innovative perennial grain cropping, to assess which systems promote increases in and stabilization of soil organic matter (SOM). In comparison with conventional annual cropping systems, perennial grain cropping may be conducive to increased C accrual resulting from no-tillage management, longer growing seasons, and extensive root growth associated with these novel systems. Furthermore, the effects of N fertilizer addition on SOM dynamics under contrasting cropping systems were examined. We conducted physical SOM fractionation into particulate (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) in samples taken over two years from two experimental sites in Central Alberta, Canada. Five contrasting cropping systems (perennial-forage, perennial-grain, fall-grain, spring-grain and fallow) both with and without N fertilizer were tested. Our findings demonstrate that perennial-grain cropping was consistently superior in sequestering SOM-C compared to annual-grain crops at the surface soil layer (0–15 cm depth, Ps< 0.05). Over the duration of this experiment, perennial-grain cropping considerably boosted C accumulation in the recalcitrant SOM pools as represented by increasing MAOM, particularly at the Edmonton site, which is characterized by a clay-rich, Black Chernozemic soil (MAOM: 41.5 and 45.3 g C kg−1 in annual and perennial crops, respectively, P < 0.05). However, recurrent N fertilizer additions diminished C sequestration by perennial-grain cropping in both POM and MAOM fractions (Ps< 0.05). Correlation analysis indicated that accrual and allocation of C within the soil profile was more closely related to aboveground crop biomass productivity as opposed to root growth, particularly for generating more intermediate-labile POM. Our results shed light on how to achieve greater soil C sequestration as a function of cropping system options, N fertilizer addition and underlying soil texture.

The Biodegradation of Soil Organic Matter in Soil-Dwelling Humivorous Fauna.

Soil organic matter contains more carbon than global vegetation and the atmosphere combined. Gaining access to this source of organic carbon is challenging and requires at least partial removal of polyphenolic and/or soil mineral protections, followed by subsequent enzymatic or chemical cleavage of diverse plant polysaccharides. Soil-feeding animals make significant contributions to the recycling of terrestrial organic matter. Some humivorous earthworms, beetles, and termites, among others, have evolved the ability to mineralize recalcitrant soil organic matter, thereby leading to their tremendous ecological success in the (sub)tropical areas. This ability largely relies on their symbiotic associations with a diverse community of gut microbes. Recent integrative omics studies, including genomics, metagenomics, and proteomics, provide deeper insights into the functions of gut symbionts. In reviewing this literature, we emphasized that understanding how these soil-feeding fauna catabolize soil organic substrates not only reveals the key microbes in the intestinal processes but also uncovers the potential novel enzymes with considerable biotechnological interests.

Warming and Labile Substrate Addition Alter Enzyme Activities and Composition of Soil Organic Carbon

Warming can increase the efflux of carbon dioxide (CO2) from soils and can potentially feedback to climate change. In addition to warming, the input of labile carbon can enhance the microbial activity by stimulating the co-metabolism of recalcitrant soil organic matter (SOM). This is particularly true with SOM under invaded ecosystems where elevated CO2and warming may increase the biomass of invasive species resulting in higher addition of labile substrates. We hypothesized that the input of labile carbon would instigate a greater soil organic carbon (SOC) loss with warming compared to the ambient temperature. We investigated this by incubating soils collected from a native pine (Pinus taeda) forest to which labile carbon from the invasive species kudzu (Pueraria lobata) was added. We evaluated the microbial extracellular enzyme activity, molecular composition of SOC and the temperature sensitivity of soil CO2efflux under warming and labile carbon addition. After 14 months of soil incubation, the addition of labile C through kudzu extract increased the activity of β-1,4-glucosidase compared with the control. However, the activity of N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase and fungal biomass (ergosterol) decreased with labile carbon addition. The activity of peroxidase increased with warming after 14 months of soil incubation. Although the carbon content of incubated soils did not vary with substrate and temperature treatments, the molecular composition of SOC indicated a general decrease in biopolymers such as cutin, suberin, long-chain fatty acids, and phytosterol with warming and an increasing trend of microbial-derived compounds with labile substrate addition. In soils that received an addition of labile C, the macro-aggregate stability was higher while the temperature sensitivity of soil C efflux was lower compared with the control. The increase in aggregate stability could enhance the physical protection of SOC from microbial decomposition potentially contributing to the observed pattern of temperature sensitivity. Our results suggest that warming could preferentially accelerate the decomposition of recalcitrant compounds while the addition of labile substrates could enhance microbial-derived compounds that are relatively resistant to further decomposition. Our study further emphasizes that global change factors such as plant invasion and climate change can differentially alter soil microbial activity and the composition of SOC.

Limited potential of biosolids application for long-term soil carbon stabilization in coastal dune forests

Whether or not biosolids application facilitates long-term soil organic matter (SOM) stability in coastal dune forests remains unsolved. We conducted a long-term experiment in a coastal radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) forest growing on sandy soils in New Zealand, where biosolids have been applied at moderate (3 t ha−1) and high (6 t ha−1) rates every three years for two decades. We determined total carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents, the amounts of iron and aluminum oxides, labile and recalcitrant C and N fractions and the chemical composition of SOM in the topsoil, and explore their relations to plant, microbial and geochemical controls. Biosolids application had increased total, labile and recalcitrant C by 6%–94%, 6%–56% and 0%–55%, respectively; increased total, labile and recalcitrant N by 14%–124%, 5%–214% and 0%–173%, respectively. Biosolids application had no significant effects on free and amorphous iron oxides, but significantly increased aluminum oxides with enhanced crystallization of amorphous aluminum. The metal/recalcitrant-C ratios, the recalcitrant/total-C ratios and the alkyl/O-alkyl-C ratios remained unchanged, indicating both the potential of mineral protection and the chemical recalcitrance of SOM were not reinforced. Decreased ratios of microbial lipid biomass to recalcitrant C further indicated biosolids application may limit microbial contribution to SOM stabilization. These limitations to confer higher stability to SOM under biosolids application is likely due to reduced belowground C allocation (root biomass and mycorrhizal associations) and microbial C limitation (higher C- versus nutrient-acquiring enzyme activities) and stress response (higher ratio of cyclopropyl-to-precursor fatty acids). Given unchanged mineral protection to SOM, decreased mycorrhizal associations coupled with increases in Gram-positive bacteria and microbial metabolic quotient may facilitate the decomposition of recalcitrant SOM. Hence, although biosolids application usually promoted immediate C accumulation, weak mineral protection and altered plant-microbial interactions may undermine its potential for long-term soil C sequestration in coastal dune forests.
