FBGs Real-Time Impact Damage Monitoring System of GFRP Beam Based on CC-LSL Algorithm

Glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite materials have an undisputed dominance over conventional metallic materials. However, susceptibility to barely visible or invisible internal damage due to impact has increased the demand for these composite materials in robust real-time structural health monitoring (SHM) system since they are capable of localizing the source of impact. Thus, in this paper, an in situ FBG sensor was embedded in a GFRP beam, providing an online real-time monitoring system and with the knowledge of cross-correlation linear source location (CC-LSL) algorithm, the impact location was capable of being determined in a split second. The consistency of cross-correlation function in providing repeatable results for all trials estimated a consistent time difference for all the impact points. The CC-LSL algorithm also revealed that the highest percentage of error was only 4.21% away from the actual hit. In the meantime, FBGs also showed good results as a dynamic strain measuring device in capturing frequency response at certain orientations compared to the AE sensor.

Industrial Gas Turbine Health and Performance Assessment With Field Data

The paper presents a thorough analysis of the historical data and results acquired over a period of two years through an on-line real-time monitoring system installed at a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. For gas turbine health and performance assessment, a gas path analysis tool based on the adaptive modeling method is integrated into the system. An engine adapted model built through a semi-automated method is part of a procedure which includes a steam/water cycle simulation module and an economic module used for power plant performance and economic assessment. The adaptive modeling diagnostic method allowed for accurate health assessment during base and part load operation identifying and quantifying compressor recoverable deterioration and the root cause of an engine performance shift. Next, the performance and economic assessment procedure was applied for quantifying the economic benefit accrued by implementing daily on-line washing and for evaluating the financial gains if the off-line washings time intervals are optimized based on actual engine performance deterioration rates. The results demonstrate that this approach allows continuous health and performance monitoring at full and part load operation enhancing decision making capabilities and adding to the information that can be acquired through traditional analysis methods based on heat balance and base load correction curves.

A study of a real-time online monitoring system for the durability of concrete structures

Purpose This study aims to explore the effect of corrosion monitoring technology for ensuring concrete structure safety. Design/methodology/approach A new monitoring system scheme with unattended operation to evaluate the durability of concrete structures is presented, which includes four components, namely, a multi-function embedded sensor, a microprocessor data collecting module, a system data analysis and storage module, and a remote server module. Findings The system carries out monitoring of chloride ion concentration and pH in concrete, corrosion current density and of the self-corrosion potential of the reinforcing steel bar. Originality/value This system provides real-time, online, lossless monitoring for concrete structures.

An On-Line Monitoring System for Nitrate in Seawater Based on UV Spectrum

Nitrate is one of the evaluation indicators of water quality, which is particularly important for water quality monitoring. A real-time on-line monitoring system of nitrate in water is introduced in this paper. And the ultraviolet absorption technology (190-370 nm) with partial least squares method is used to detect nitrate concentration. The automated online system based on ultraviolet absorption spectrum is capable of analyzing samples without any sample preservation and without contamination problems. This system is fast, reliable, and sensitive enough for continuous use on monitoring stations and nitrate concentration can also be determined directly via its ultraviolet absorption spectrum. This system uses flow sample cell with 1cm optical path length, and a reference light is used to eliminate system error. The correlation coefficient for a linear function of the nitrate concentrations is 0.999 98. So the results of the system model test are in good correlation with the laboratory ones. Data collected has been analyzed statistically to determine how system model behave throughout the test, with special attention being paid to error analysis. As the average relative error is 0.65%, this system has greater stability and higher accuracy. The results of nitrate measurements by the field seawater tests in Yantai coast are obtained, which nitrate concentrations are about 0.2 mg · L⁻¹ in seawater, and the recoveries of samples for standard recovery tests are in 95%~110%, it shows that this system is accurate, reliability and practicability and could be developed for detected nitrate concentration in natural water.

Development of a freshness-assessment model for a real-time online monitoring system of packaged commercial milk in distribution

Abstract The freshness of packaged pasteurized milk under fluctuating temperature condition in distribution, which was assessed by measuring the total microbial count in milk samples, was monitored by applying real–time temperature logging technology, which included RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), WSN (Wireless Sensor Networks) and predictive microbiology. The freshness assessment model, which would be used in a real-time online quality monitoring system for packaged commercial milk, was developed considering the impacts of large thermal capacity of packaged milk, wide biokinetic temperature range, i.e., 5–30 °C, and intermediate lags with temperature shifts as well as the choices of the primary and secondary models such as the Gompertz, the Roberts and Baranyi, and the Hills and Wright models. The justifiability of considering additional model parameters was statistically analyzed using Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) to select the best freshness assessment model. The freshness assessment model with the Hills and Wright model as the primary model and the two-zone Arrhenius model as the secondary model was selected as the best one to use for the real-time milk freshness monitoring system.

Real-time on-line monitoring system for UHV transmission tower is located in strong electromagnetic interference environment, especially when the transmission tower encounters thunderstorm weather, lightning current can produce the stronger electromagnetic field near the power transmission tower, so the bad environment generated by strong electromagnetic interference determines the difficulty of analysis of strong electromagnetic field distribution, therefore, this design chooses to simulate strong electromagnetic field environment around the online monitoring system of UHV transmission tower in the laboratory, carries on the analysis, then summarizes its impact on the monitoring system of the wireless channel and puts forward protective measures.

The Cross-Browser Multi-Platform Real Time Online Monitoring System Based on WebSocket

The traditional HTTP protocol uses the request、response mode, and it does not support the characteristics such as real-time information transmission and server push. In this paper, the use of HTM5 in the WebSocket protocol supports long connection, full duplex communication and other characteristics, and the design of a new set of real-time online monitoring system has been made, not only solve the efficiency problem of implementation of Web real time communication protocol HTTP polling and other technology, but also ensure cross browser system of multi platform characteristics.

Acid Emission Automatic Real-Time Sampling Monitoring System

This paper introduces a novel on-line real-time monitoring system for acidic emission produced by acid pickling, which has been one of the greatest contaminant and major harness content. The system can monitor the HCL concentration in exhaust fumes on-line, and realize the real-time analysis and transmission of the acquisition data. HCL wet chemical sampling system form the whole on-line monitoring system. HCL wet chemical sampling system consists of integrated air velocity transducer, chloride ion analyzer, wet chemical sampling device and liquid level measurement device. It aims to collect HCL fog sample and convert the sampling analogue signal to digital data that can be analyzed. The system overcomes the influence by high temperature, high humidity and high concentration of dust. It realizes the monitoring, storage, analysis, warning and transmission of HCL concentration data in the exhaust. It is beneficial in practical industrial field and environmental protection.

The Research of Detection and Control System for Indoor Harmful Gas

Aiming at indoor harmful gas pollution of residents, a real-time online monitoring system is designed based on the detecting and control of harmful gases. The lower computer system make the STM32F103 microcontroller as the core and make each module been designed which included the sensor temperature and humidity acquisition, gas concentrations acquisition, sensor interface circuits, signal amplification circuit, liquid crystal display circuit, alarm circuit and so on. The upper computer make the microcomputer as the monitoring center which make on-line display of temperature, humidity and gas concentration in real-time, then people can get the indoor harmful gas data for collection and management with the upper computer. CAN bus is adopted for information transfer between the master computer and the slave computer.

On-line monitoring system of 110 kV submarine cable based on BOTDR

The submarine cable is large-scale and high cost, and at the same time, it locates at the bottom of the ocean, which leads to difficulties in its daily inspection and fault detection. At present, there is no effective real-time on-line monitoring system for it. To solve the problem, an on-line monitoring method based on the Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (BOTDR) is proposed. The BOTDR technology can measure the temperature/strain distribution along the submarine cable with high accuracy, and the temperature and strain coefficients of the G.652 optical fiber are calibrated. On the basis of systematic investigations, the real-time on-line monitoring system based on BOTDR has been realized. A 110kV optical fiber composite submarine cable can be monitored by the established BOTDR system with a spatial resolution of 1m. The system is put into service in China, and runs well. The large amounts of data are acquired and analyzed, and the results reveal that currently, the three phases’ submarine cables function well. At the same time, the influence of the sea wave scouring and sediment migration is slight at the relatively flat area. However, the cable laying topography has a very close relationship with the measured data, that is, the steeper the topography, the larger the measured Brillouin frequency shift value. The monitoring system proposed in the paper provides a feasible scheme for the on-line monitoring of the submarine cable, which can ensure the safe operation of the submarine cable.

Ice Thickness Sensor for Overhead Transmission Lines Based on Capacitance Sensing

Abstract A transmission line ice thickness real-time simulation and online monitoring system were designed by using the coplanar multi-point capacitance sensor technology. The capacitance sensing type ice thickness sensor is used in the system to detect the metal electrode capacitance change on various positions surrounding the analog transmission line, and verify the ice thickness on analog line. By theoretical analysis and simulation of a plurality of coplanar metal line electrode fields and capacitors, as well as the freezing test of the system in low temperature, the system is validated to have the feasibility of monitoring the ice thickness of transmission lines.

Online Condition Monitoring of Battery Systems With a Nonlinear Estimator

The performance of batteries as uninterruptable power sources in any industry cannot be taken for granted. The failures in battery systems of safety-related electric systems can lead to performance deterioration, costly replacement, and, more importantly, serious hazards. The possible failures in battery systems are currently determined through periodic maintenance activities. However, it is desirable to be able to detect the underlying degradation and to predict the level of unsatisfactory performance by an online real-time monitoring system to prevent unexpected failures through early fault diagnosis. Such an online fault diagnosis method can also contribute to better maintenance and optimal battery replacement programs. A robust nonlinear estimator-based online condition monitoring method is proposed to determine the state of health of the battery systems online in industry. Real-world experimental data of a modern battery system are used to assess the efficiency of the proposed approach in the existence of parameter uncertainties.

Real-Time Temperature On-Line Monitoring and Analysis System for Transformers

The safe operation of power transformers mainly depends on proper functioning of insulation, whose status is revealed by temperatures. Applying ZigBee wireless network, a real-time temperature on-line monitoring and analysis system is developed to view the operation status of underground distribution transformers and process fault diagnosis. Furthermore, using the top-oil and hot-spot temperature calculation method in IEEE Std C57.91-1995, the system can compute a prediction of those temperatures with current load ratio and ambient temperature. System will display early warnings if temperatures are much higher than expected ones, in which way insulation aging can be handled in advance. Insulation fault and big disasters will be prevented.

Analysis and Solution on the Correlation between Dissolved Oxygen Sensor and pH Sensor for Water Quality Monitoring

This paper designs a multi parameter real-time water quality on-line monitoring system for aquaculture water. This system achieves the online monitoring among temperature, turbidity, DO (dissolved oxygen), pH and electrical conductivity. The crosstalk, produced by the simultaneous measurement with DO and pH sensors, will affect accuracy and stability of monitoring results. This paper analyzes the source of crosstalk, describes a circuit model of causing crosstalk, and designs an isolated circuit between powers and signals as well. The experimental results show that, the real-time monitoring of DO and pH has the characteristics of speediness, high precision, small error and low noise.

Analysis of Online System Investment Decision Dependency on Customer Profile and Equipment Condition via Risk Approach

Real-time online monitoring system and its analytics system for substation equipment is an important element of smart grid technology. However, proposals to invest in real-time online monitoring system are often turned down by the decision-maker due to the lack of economic model which act as a qualifier that determines whether the investment is worthwhile for the company and nation. In this paper, by deploying risk quantification methodology, visualized through decision tree structures, we propose that the investment of a sophisticated system for substation monitoring is dependent on customer segment profile and the condition of equipment. We present several scenarios that depict our argument on this matter.

저압계통 연계형 마이크로그리드의 보호감시 시스템

This paper mainly proposes the protective coordination scheme of the microgrid system. The microgrid protection is identical to the conventional protection system separating the normal part and contingency part to reduce damage when the contingency occur at power cables, facilities. But they are different in the protection type. The conventional protection system only considers unidirectional current. However the microgrid protection should be considered not only unidirectional current but also backfeed current because various microsources and loads are installed in the microgrid system. In case the contingency occurs in microsource, when microgrid is interconnected to grid, the protection system should be configured to not separate microgrid from grid before the microsource is isolated to microgrid. And in case of fault occur in power system, the microsources should not isolated to microgrid before the static switch at PCC is tripped to separate from power system. Considering these characteristic of microgird, this paper proposes the protective coordination scheme of microgrid and implemented the on-line real time monitoring system. Especially in case the microgrid is connected to low voltage distribution system with 220/380V voltage level, the proposed protection method with power IT technology can solve the problems when the existing protective devices only applied to the microgrid system.

The development of an on-line ERM system for the research reactors in Korea

A real-time on-line environmental radiation monitoring (ERM) system for the research reactor sites of Daejeon and Seoul is established. In the Daejeon site, a radio communication method with a radiofrequency of 468.8 MHz is used between the main computer and the six posts inside the Daejeon research reactor site. A general telephone communication method by a dial modem is applied between the main computer and a comparison point with one post outside the Daejeon research reactor site. In the Seoul site, a null modem communication method is employed between a sub-computer and the three posts inside the Seoul research reactor site, and a high-speed communication network such as ADSL is used between the sub-computer in the Seoul site and the main computer in the Daejeon site. Consequently, the real-time data from a total of 10 places is displayed on-line on a screen and it is statistically treated.

Computer-aided on-line monitoring of physiological variables in suspended cell cultures of Perilla frutescens in a bioreactor

A computer-aided on-line real-time monitoring system for plant cell bioprocesses was established and applied to the cultivation of Perilla frutescens plant cells in a bioreactor. This system calculated several informative process variables which were useful for the identification of the physiological states of the plant cells during cultivation. Some variables, such as the respiratory quotient (RQ), pH, and specific carbon dioxide evolution rate (SCER), could be used for the identification of the growing phase of cell cultures. The results also suggest that the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and the specific OUR (SOUR) may depend on the accumulation of anthocyanin (a secondary metabolite) in P. frutescens cell cultures.
