Synthesis of high purity pentafluorides by competitive Lewis acid reactions: Preparation of NbF 5, MoF 5, WF 5 and OsF 5

Antimony pentafluoride reacts with several readily available hexafluorometalate(V) anions at relatively low temperature when dissolved in anhydrous HF to produce the weaker Lewis acids NbF 5, MoF 5, WF 5 and OsF 5 in high purity.

The participation of macromolecules in generation of active centres in polymerization of cyclic acetals

The polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane in solution in methylene chloride, catalysed by antimony pentafluoride, fluorosulphonic and perchloric acids, azonenzene perchlorate or a mixture of antimony pentafluoride and fluorosulphonic acid, has been found to be an autocatalytic process. A kinetic analysis of the autocatalytic polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane under the influence of boron trifluoride etherate has been made. The ratio of the rate constants of reaction of the catalyst with a polymer chain unit and with a monomer molecule was determined. The rate constant for the formation of active centres by reaction of Et 2O·BF 3 with the polymer has been determined by the method of degradation of the polydioxolane. The mechanism of reaction of Lewis acids with the monomer and with the polymer molecule is discussed.

Liquid hydrogen sulphide as an ionising solvent. Part II. Reactions of Lewis acids of boron with base analogues

Neutralisations of base analogues by volatile boron Lewis acids have been examined in liquid hydrogen sulphide. Salts containing the new anions BF3SH–, BCl3SH–, BBr3SH–, and BEt3SH– have been prepared. The reaction of diborane is more complicated but seems to proceed, at least initially, through the formation of the ion BH3,SH·BH3–, which subsequently loses hydrogen. The ions BF3SH– and BCl3SH– react with excess of boron trihalide to give tetrafluoroborate and tetrachloroborate ions, respectively.
