RedEye-1: a compact SWIR hyperspectral imager for observation of atmospheric methane and carbon dioxide

We present the development of our first prototype of a compact short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral imager, RedEye-1, designed to observe and measure the concentrations of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. It operates in the spectral range of 1588 nm to 1673 nm with a nominal spectral resolution of 0.5 nm and has a total weight of approximately 1.8 kg. We outline the optical design of the instrument, including its fore-optics (telescope), and evaluate its performance using the OpticStudio ZEMAX software. In addition, we explain the spectral and radiometric calibration procedures and present the results. Our preliminary data reduction and analysis revealed a high quality SWIR image and a single path measurement of an atmospheric profile displaying the absorption lines of CH4 and CO2.

Calibration Method for Airborne Infrared Optical Systems in a Non-Thermal Equilibrium State.

Airborne infrared optical systems equipped with multiple cooled infrared cameras are commonly utilized for quantitative radiometry and thermometry measurements. Radiometric calibration is crucial for ensuring the accuracy and quantitative application of remote sensing camera data. Conventional radiometric calibration methods that consider internal stray radiation are usually based on the assumption that the entire system is in thermal equilibrium. However, this assumption leads to significant errors when applying the radiometric calibration results in actual mission scenarios. To address this issue, we analyzed the changes in optical temperature within the system and developed a simplified model to account for the internal stray radiation in the non-thermal equilibrium state. Building upon this model, we proposed an enhanced radiometric calibration method, which was applied to the absolute radiometric calibration procedure of the system. The radiometric calibration experiment, conducted on the medium-wave channel of the system within a temperature test chamber, demonstrated that the proposed method can achieve a calibration accuracy exceeding 3.78% within an ambient temperature range of -30 °C to 15 °C. Additionally, the maximum temperature measurement error was found to be less than ±1.01 °C.

Composite Aerosol Optical Depth Mapping over Northeast Asia from GEO-LEO Satellite Observations

This study aimed to generate a near real time composite of aerosol optical depth (AOD) to improve predictive model ability and provide current conditions of aerosol spatial distribution and transportation across Northeast Asia. AOD, a proxy for aerosol loading, is estimated remotely by various spaceborne imaging sensors capturing visible and infrared spectra. Nevertheless, differences in satellite-based retrieval algorithms, spatiotemporal resolution, sampling, radiometric calibration, and cloud-screening procedures create significant variability among AOD products. Satellite products, however, can be complementary in terms of their accuracy and spatiotemporal comprehensiveness. Thus, composite AOD products were derived for Northeast Asia based on data from four sensors: Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), Moderate Infrared Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). Cumulative distribution functions were employed to estimate error statistics using measurements from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). In order to apply the AERONET point-specific error, coefficients of each satellite were calculated using inverse distance weighting. Finally, the root mean square error (RMSE) for each satellite AOD product was calculated based on the inverse composite weighting (ICW). Hourly AOD composites were generated (00:00–09:00 UTC, 2017) using the regression equation derived from the comparison of the composite AOD error statistics to AERONET measurements, and the results showed that the correlation coefficient and RMSE values of composite were close to those of the low earth orbit satellite products (MODIS and VIIRS). The methodology and the resulting dataset derived here are relevant for the demonstrated successful merging of multi-sensor retrievals to produce long-term satellite-based climate data records.

EVALUATION OF THE RADIOMETRIC ACCURACY OF IMAGES OBTAINED BY A SEQUOIA MULTISPECTRAL CAMERA

ABSTRACT Geometric and radiometric corrections of images obtained by remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) are required for the measurement of the spectral reflectance and calculation of vegetation indices. This study aimed to determine which radiometric calibration procedures allow obtaining suborbital images with more accurate reflectance data and spectral indices based on data collected by a Sequoia multispectral camera coupled to a RPAS on black oat cultivations at the flowering stage located in Eldorado do Sul, RS, Brazil. The orthophoto mosaics were processed without and with radiometric corrections by reflectance calibration ground target and/or solar irradiance sensor of the camera, and the radiometric accuracy of these images was evaluated using spectral reflectance ground data collected by the Crop Circle canopy sensor. The results indicated that the use of a reflectance calibration ground target is recommended to increase the radiometric accuracy of photographs even if the Sequoia solar irradiance sensor is employed. The use of the light gray target in the radiometric calibration resulted in orthophotos with the mean square error of reflectance values lower than 0.01 for all the analyzed bands and spectral indices.

HDR Reconstruction Based on the Polarization Camera

The recent development of the on-chip micro-polarizer technology has made it possible to acquire – with the same ease of operation as a conventional camera – spatially aligned and temporally synchronized polarization images simultaneously in four orientations. This development has created new opportunities for interesting applications including those in robotics. In this letter, we investigate the use of this sensor technology in high-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging. Specifically, observing that natural light can be attenuated differently by varying the direction of the polarization filter, we treat the multiple images captured by the polarization camera as a set captured at different exposure times, useful to the reconstruction of an HDR image. In our approach, we first study the radiometric model of the polarization camera, and relate the polarizer direction, degree and angle of polarization of light to the exposure time of a pixel in the polarization images. Subsequently, by applying the standard radiometric calibration procedure of a camera, we recover the camera response function. With multiple polarization images at known pixel-specific exposure times, we can then proceed to estimate the irradiance maps from the images and generate an HDR image. Two datasets are created to evaluate our approach, and experimental results show the dynamic range by our approach can be increased by an amount dependent on light polarization. We also use two robotics experiments on feature matching and visual odometry to demonstrate the potential benefit of this increased dynamic range.

Instrument Radiometric Processing for Earh Observation Satellite Optical Payload

The radiometric calibration procedure, applied on VNREDSat-1 raw data shall correct and minimize the radiometric non-uniform gain and offset, occurred by the nature of the optical payload. The procedure is based on the radiometric model, built to transform the incoming radiance into camera output signal. Within this radiometric model, the radiometric parameters such as dark noise and pixel response non-uniformity shall be separated. The output signal of dark noise shall be measured by capturing image scene of the ocean at night. The output signal of pixel response non-uniformity shall be measured by capturing image scene of uniform radiance image scene such as the dessert or grass field. All the radiometric calibration parameter after calculated shall be saved into a calibration file, which is kept on the control station and image processing station.

Illumination Geometry and Flying Height Influence Surface Reflectance and NDVI Derived from Multispectral UAS Imagery

Small unmanned aerial systems (UAS) have allowed the mapping of vegetation at very high spatial resolution, but a lack of standardisation has led to uncertainties regarding data quality. For reflectance measurements and vegetation indices (Vis) to be comparable between sites and over time, careful flight planning and robust radiometric calibration procedures are required. Two sources of uncertainty that have received little attention until recently are illumination geometry and the effect of flying height. This study developed methods to quantify and visualise these effects in imagery from the Parrot Sequoia, a UAV-mounted multispectral sensor. Change in illumination geometry over one day (14 May 2018) had visible effects on both individual images and orthomosaics. Average near-infrared (NIR) reflectance and NDVI in regions of interest were slightly lower around solar noon, and the contrast between shadowed and well-illuminated areas increased over the day in all multispectral bands. Per-pixel differences in NDVI maps were spatially variable, and much larger than average differences in some areas. Results relating to flying height were inconclusive, though small increases in NIR reflectance with height were observed over a black sailcloth tarp. These results underline the need to consider illumination geometry when carrying out UAS vegetation surveys.

Radiometric calibration of a non-imaging airborne spectrometer to measure the Greenland ice sheet surface

Abstract. Methods to radiometrically calibrate a non-imaging airborne visible-to-shortwave infrared (VSWIR) spectrometer to measure the Greenland ice sheet surface are presented. Airborne VSWIR measurement performance for bright Greenland ice and dark bare rock/soil targets is compared against the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN®) radiative transfer code (version 6.0), and a coincident Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) acquisition on 29 July 2015 during an in-flight radiometric calibration experiment. Airborne remote sensing flights were carried out in northwestern Greenland in preparation for the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2) laser altimeter mission. A total of nine science flights were conducted over the Greenland ice sheet, sea ice, and open-ocean water. The campaign's primary purpose was to correlate green laser pulse penetration into snow and ice with spectroscopic-derived surface properties. An experimental airborne instrument configuration that included a nadir-viewing (looking downward at the surface) non-imaging Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD) Inc. spectrometer that measured upwelling VSWIR (0.35 to 2.5 µm) spectral radiance (Wm-2sr-1µm-1) in the two-color Slope Imaging Multi-polarization Photon-Counting Lidar's (SIMPL) ground instantaneous field of view, and a zenith-viewing (looking upward at the sky) ASD spectrometer that measured VSWIR spectral irradiance (W m−2 nm−1) was flown. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceable radiometric calibration procedures for laboratory, in-flight, and field environments are described in detail to achieve a targeted VSWIR measurement requirement of within 5 % to support calibration/validation efforts and remote sensing algorithm development. Our MODTRAN predictions for the 29 July flight line over dark and bright targets indicate that the airborne nadir-viewing spectrometer spectral radiance measurement uncertainty was between 0.6 % and 4.7 % for VSWIR wavelengths (0.4 to 2.0 µm) with atmospheric transmittance greater than 80 %. MODTRAN predictions for Landsat 8 OLI relative spectral response functions suggest that OLI is measuring 6 % to 16 % more top-of-atmosphere (TOA) spectral radiance from the Greenland ice sheet surface than was predicted using apparent reflectance spectra from the nadir-viewing spectrometer. While more investigation is required to convert airborne VSWIR spectral radiance into atmospherically corrected airborne surface reflectance, it is expected that airborne science flight data products will contribute to spectroscopic determination of Greenland ice sheet surface optical properties to improve understanding of their potential influence on ICESat-2 measurements.

Correção Geométrica de Imagens CBERS-4/PAN com Modelos Generalizados Usando como Referência Dados do Sistema Nacional de Gestão Fundiária

As imagens orbitais vêm sendo amplamente empregadas em diversas aplicações no contexto de observação da Terra, as quais exigem diferentes níveis de detalhamento e de acurácia posicional. O Programa CBERS (China–Brazil Earth Resources Satellite Program) originou-se de uma parceria entre Brasil e China no setor técnico-científico espacial. O satélite CBERS-4 é o quinto satélite do Programa CBERS e contém o sensor PAN, que coleta imagens pancromáticas com elemento de resolução espacial (GSD – Ground Sample Distance) de 5 m. Os estudos relacionados à análise da confiabilidade posicional e correção geométrica de imagens CBERS-4 ainda são limitados. Estudos prévios com imagens CBERS-4 PAN com diferentes níveis de processamento indicam deslocamentos posicionais significativos das imagens georreferenciadas, disponibilizadas pelo INPE (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais), incompatíveis com o seu GSD. Nesse sentido, o objetivo desse trabalho consistiu em investigar a aplicação de modelos matemáticos generalizados na correção geométrica de imagens CBERS-4 PAN usando limites das propriedades rurais do INCRA (Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária) como pontos de controle. Destaca-se que esses limites estão disponíveis para propriedades de todo o Brasil, o que possibilita a replicação do trabalho em nível nacional. Foram consideradas imagens com diferentes níveis de correção prévia (níveis 1 e 2). As imagens de nível 1 são resultantes apenas da aplicação de procedimentos de calibração radiométrica, enquanto as de nível 2 são imagens de nível 1 corrigidas geometricamente a partir de informações de dados orbitais do satélite. Nos experimentos, considerou-se 3 (três) imagens no nível 1 e 1 (uma) imagem no nível 2. Adotaram-se os seguintes modelos generalizados: Polinomiais de ordem 1, 2 e 3; Projetiva e; Thin Plate Spline (TPS). Os modelos generalizados têm por vantagem não exigir o conhecimento dos parâmetros de aquisição do sistema, como a distância focal, o tamanho do sensor, dentre outras. Entretanto, exigem quantidade significativa de pontos de controle com distribuição uniforme ao longo da imagem. Para o processo de correção geométrica utilizou-se diferentes configurações de pontos de controle (30, 25, 20, 15 e 10) coincidentes com os limites das propriedades rurais georreferenciadas no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, que apresentam acurácia superior a 50 cm. A validação da correção geométrica foi realizada a partir do REQM (Raiz quadrado do Erro Quadrático Médio) nos pontos de verificação. A transformação Polinomial de ordem 1 apresentou valores elevados (maior que 10 GSD – 50 metros) de REMQ quando comparado aos demais modelos matemáticos, mesmo considerando 30 pontos de controle. O modelo Polinomial de ordem 2 apresentou comportamento mais consistente se comparado aos demais modelos. Mesmo ao considerar apenas 10 GCP apresentou REQM entre 1 e 2 GSD. Nesse modelo não há melhora significativa nos resultados mesmo aumentando a quantidade de pontos de controle. Nos demais modelos (TPS, Projetiva e Polinomial de ordem 3), verificou-se um aumento significativo no REQM ao se reduzir a quantidade de pontos. As imagens utilizadas nesse trabalho recobrem parte do Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, o qual engloba a maior parte do Pantanal, considerado patrimônio natural da humanidade. Essas imagens orbitais, portanto, podem contribuir para o mapeamento e monitoramento de seus recursos naturais e, consequentemente, na proteção desse patrimônio.

Radiometric calibration framework for ultra-high-resolution UAV-derived orthomosaics for large-scale mapping of invasive alien plants in semi-arid woodlands: Harrisia pomanensis as a case study

ABSTRACTOrthomosaics derived from consumer grade digital cameras on board unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly being used for biodiversity monitoring and remote sensing of the environment. To have lasting quantitative value, remotely sensed imagery should be calibrated to physical units of reflectance. Radiometric calibration improves the quality of raw imagery for consistent quantitative analysis and comparison across different calibrated imagery. Moreover, calibrating remotely sensed imagery to units of reflectance improves its usefulness for deriving quantitative biochemical and biophysical metrics. Notwithstanding the existing radiometric calibration procedures for correcting single images, studies on radiometric calibration of UAV-derived orthomosaics remain scarce. In particular, this study presents a cost- and time-efficient radiometric calibration framework for designing calibration targets, checking scene illumination uniformity, converting orthomosaic digital numbers to units of reflectance, and accuracy assessment using in situ mean reflectance measurements (i.e. the average reflectance in a particular waveband). The empirical line method was adopted for the development of radiometric calibration prediction equations using mean reflectance values measured in only one spot within a 97 ha orthomosaic for three wavebands, i.e. red, green and blue of the Sony NEX-7 camera. A scene illumination uniformity check experiment was conducted to establish whether 10 randomly distributed regions within the orthomosaic experienced similar atmospheric and illumination conditions. This methodological framework was tested in a relatively flat terrain semi-arid woodland that is invaded by Harrisia pomanensis (the Midnight Lady). The scene illumination uniformity check results showed that at a 95% confidence interval, the prediction equations developed using mean reflectance values measured from only one spot within the scene can be used to calibrate the entire 97 ha RGB orthomosaic. Furthermore, the radiometric calibration accuracy assessment results showed a correlation coefficient r value of 0.977 (p < 0.01) between measured and estimated reflectance values with an overall root mean square error of 0.063. These findings suggest that given the entire scene being mapped is experiencing similar atmospheric and illumination conditions, then prediction equations developed using mean reflectance values measured in only one spot within the scene can be used to calibrate the entire orthomosaic in semi-arid woodlands. The proposed methodological framework can potentially be tested and adapted for use in large-scale crop mapping and monitoring in precision agriculture, land-use/land-cover classification as well as plant species delimitation, particularly for mapping widespread invasive alien plants such as H. pomanensis.

CALIPSO Lidar Calibration at 532 nm: Version 4 Nighttime Algorithm.

Data products from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) on board Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) were recently updated following the implementation of new (version 4) calibration algorithms for all of the level 1 attenuated backscatter measurements. In this work we present the motivation for and the implementation of the version 4 nighttime 532 nm parallel channel calibration. The nighttime 532 nm calibration is the most fundamental calibration of CALIOP data, since all of CALIOP's other radiometric calibration procedures - i.e., the 532 nm daytime calibration and the 1064 nm calibrations during both nighttime and daytime - depend either directly or indirectly on the 532 nm nighttime calibration. The accuracy of the 532 nm nighttime calibration has been significantly improved by raising the molecular normalization altitude from 30-34 km to 36-39 km to substantially reduce stratospheric aerosol contamination. Due to the greatly reduced molecular number density and consequently reduced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at these higher altitudes, the signal is now averaged over a larger number of samples using data from multiple adjacent granules. As well, an enhanced strategy for filtering the radiation-induced noise from high energy particles was adopted. Further, the meteorological model used in the earlier versions has been replaced by the improved MERRA-2 model. An aerosol scattering ratio of 1.01 ± 0.01 is now explicitly used for the calibration altitude. These modifications lead to globally revised calibration coefficients which are, on average, 2-3% lower than in previous data releases. Further, the new calibration procedure is shown to eliminate biases at high altitudes that were present in earlier versions and consequently leads to an improved representation of stratospheric aerosols. Validation results using airborne lidar measurements are also presented. Biases relative to collocated measurements acquired by the Langley Research Center (LaRC) airborne high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) are reduced from 3.6% ± 2.2% in the version 3 data set to 1.6% ± 2.4 % in the version 4 release.

A spectrally tunable calibration source using Ebert-Fastie configuration

A novel spectrally tunable calibration source based on a digital micromirror device (DMD) and Ebert-Fastie optical configuration with two working modes (narrow-band mode and broad-band mode) was designed. The DMD is set on the image plane of the first spectral tuner, and controls the wavelength and intensity of the light reflected into the second spectral tuner by switching the micromirror array’s condition, which in turn controls the working mode of the spectrally tunable source. When working in narrow-band mode, the spectrally tunable source can be calibrated by a Gershun tube radiant power radiometer and a spectroradiometer. In broad-band mode, it can be used to calibrate optical instruments as a standard spectral radiance source. When using a xenon lamp as a light source, the stability of the spectrally tunable source is better than 0.5%, the minimum spectral bandwidth is 7 nm, and the uncertainty of the spectral radiance of the spectrally tunable source is estimated as 14.68% at 450 nm, 1.54% at 550 nm, and 1.48% at 654.6 nm. The uncertainty of the spectral radiance of the spectrally tunable source calibrated by the Gershun tube radiometer and spectroradiometer can be kept low during the radiometric calibration procedure so that it can meet the application requirement of optical quantitative remote sensing calibration.

The DOM Generation and Precise Radiometric Calibration of a UAV-Mounted Miniature Snapshot Hyperspectral Imager

Hyperspectral remote sensing is used in precision agriculture to remotely and quickly acquire crop phenotype information. This paper describes the generation of a digital orthophoto map (DOM) and radiometric calibration for images taken by a miniaturized snapshot hyperspectral camera mounted on a lightweight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The snapshot camera is a relatively new type of hyperspectral sensor that can acquire an image cube with one spectral and two spatial dimensions at one exposure. The images acquired by the hyperspectral snapshot camera need to be mosaicked together to produce a DOM and radiometrically calibrated before analysis. However, the spatial resolution of hyperspectral cubes is too low to mosaic the images together. Furthermore, there are no systematic radiometric calibration methods or procedures for snapshot hyperspectral images acquired from low-altitude carrier platforms. In this study, we obtained hyperspectral imagery using a snapshot hyperspectral sensor mounted on a UAV. We quantitatively evaluated the radiometric response linearity (RRL) and radiometric response variation (RRV) and proposed a method to correct the RRV effect. We then introduced a method to interpolate position and orientation system (POS) information and generate a DOM with low spatial resolution and a digital elevation model (DEM) using a 3D mesh model built from panchromatic images with high spatial resolution. The relative horizontal geometric precision of the DOM was validated by comparison with a DOM generated from a digital RGB camera. A surface crop model (CSM) was produced from the DEM, and crop height for 48 sampling plots was extracted and compared with the corresponding field-measured crop height to verify the relative precision of the DEM. Finally, we applied two absolute radiometric calibration methods to the generated DOM and verified their accuracy via comparison with spectra measured with an ASD Field Spec Pro spectrometer (Analytical Spectral Devices, Boulder, CO, USA). The DOM had high relative horizontal accuracy, and compared with the digital camera-derived DOM, spatial differences were below 0.05 m (RMSE = 0.035). The determination coefficient for a regression between DEM-derived and field-measured crop height was 0.680. The radiometric precision was 5% for bands between 500 and 945 nm, and the reflectance curve in the infrared spectral region did not decrease as in previous research. The pixel and data sizes for the DOM corresponding to a field area of approximately 85 m × 34 m were small (0.67 m and approximately 13.1 megabytes, respectively), which is convenient for data transmission, preprocessing and analysis. The proposed method for radiometric calibration and DOM generation from hyperspectral cubes can be used to yield hyperspectral imagery products for various applications, particularly precision agriculture.

Towards high-accuracy primary spectral radiometry from 400 K to 1300 K.

We describe the design, construction, calibration and use of a near-infrared thermodynamic radiation thermometer to measure blackbodies from 400 K to 1300 K. The motivation for this work is the pending redefinition of the kelvin and the need for direct, thermodynamic temperature measurements of the fixed-point blackbodies presently used in the realization of the temperature scale. The challenges of accurately measuring Planck radiances which vary greatly in radiance level and spectral shape are discussed. Methods to characterize the components used in the radiation thermometer design are described. The use of this radiation thermometer as a relative primary thermometer and the resulting residuals are shown. We describe radiometric calibration procedures for using the radiation thermometer as an absolute primary thermometer. Preliminary data showing the initial radiometric calibration steps are discussed.

Prelaunch Radiometric Calibration of the HIRDLS Flight Instrument: Results and Use in On-Orbit Data Processing

Results from the prelaunch radiometric calibration of the 21-channel High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS) flight instrument are presented. The calibration was carried out in the Department of Physics of Oxford University. Two large aperture external blackbody cavities were used to generate stable radiances at target temperatures between $\sim$ 90 and $\sim$ 320 K. These blackbodies were located, along with the HIRDLS instrument, inside a large vacuum chamber. Data were taken at three different focal-plane temperatures ( $\sim$ 61, $\sim$ 66, and $\sim$ 71 K). To complicate matters beyond the initial scope of the prelaunch calibration, a failure of some contamination close-out material (Kapton) that lined the inner fore-optics cavity occurred during launch, which made the original in-flight radiometric calibration procedure impossible. Accordingly, the radiometric conversion algorithm had to be changed, requiring more information from prelaunch calibration to be used than first envisioned. This paper discusses a variety of details, such as data-taking procedures, analysis methodology, associated error analyses, and necessary changes to the radiometric conversion algorithm needed for in-flight data processing.

Radiometic Comparison Between a National Laboratory and an Industrial Laboratory

One of the disciplines that Fluke–Hart Scientific has is radiometric calibration. Part of this program involves use of a radiation thermometer with a pyroelectic detector. It is used as a radiometric transfer standard between a set of liquid-bath variable temperature blackbodies and a flat-plate infrared (IR) calibrator. The flat-plate calibrator is designed for use in the calibration of handheld IR thermometers. The traceability of the variable temperature blackbodies is realized by contact thermometry through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). A verification of these blackbodies is a comparison between a calibration done by the Radiance Temperature Laboratory at NIST and the blackbodies at Fluke–Hart Scientific. This comparison uses a transfer radiation thermometer (TRT) as a check standard. It would be more desirable to use radiometric traceability as an indication of the blackbodies’ radiometric temperature. However, contact thermometry provides much better uncertainties. These uncertainties are needed for the radiometric transfer from the blackbodies to the flat-plate calibrators. Thus, the NIST radiometric calibration of the TRT is used for verification of normal equivalence. This article discusses Fluke–Hart Scientific’s blackbody traceability. It covers the Fluke–Hart Scientific and the NIST radiometric calibration procedures. It discusses the radiometric uncertainty budgets at both Fluke–Hart Scientific and at NIST. It then discusses the results of this comparison and analyzes the results. The comparison is in the temperature range of −15 °C to 500 °C. It showed a normal equivalence of less than 1.00 at all points. The article concludes with a set of future actions to ensure quality in Fluke–Hart Scientific’s radiometric calibration program.

A Procedure for Radiometric Recalibration of Landsat 5 TM Reflective-Band Data

From the Landsat program's inception in 1972 to the present, the Earth science user community has been benefiting from a historical record of remotely sensed data. The multispectral data from the Landsat 5 (L5) Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor provide the backbone for this extensive archive. Historically, the radiometric calibration procedure for the L5 TM imagery used the detectors' response to the internal calibrator (IC) on a scene-by-scene basis to determine the gain and offset for each detector. The IC system degraded with time, causing radiometric calibration errors up to 20%. In May 2003, the L5 TM data processed and distributed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science Center through the National Landsat Archive Production System (NLAPS) were updated to use a lifetime lookup-table (LUT) gain model to radiometrically calibrate TM data instead of using scene-specific IC gains. Further modification of the gain model was performed in 2007. The L5 TM data processed using IC prior to the calibration update do not benefit from the recent calibration revisions. A procedure has been developed to give users the ability to recalibrate their existing level-1 products. The best recalibration results are obtained if the work-order report that was included in the original standard data product delivery is available. However, if users do not have the original work-order report, the IC trends can be used for recalibration. The IC trends were generated using the radiometric gain trends recorded in the NLAPS database. This paper provides the details of the recalibration procedure for the following: 1) data processed using IC where users have the work-order file; 2) data processed using IC where users do not have the work-order file; 3) data processed using prelaunch calibration parameters; and 4) data processed using the previous version of the LUT (e.g., LUT03) that was released before April 2, 2007.

Microbolometer-infrared imaging Stokes polarimeter

A long-wave infrared division of amplitude imaging Stokes polarimeter is presented. For the first time, to our knowledge, application of microbolometer focal plane array (FPA) technology to polarimetry is demonstrated. The sensor utilizes a wire-grid beamsplitter with imaging systems positioned at each output to analyze two orthogonal linear polarization states simultaneously. Combined with a form birefringent wave plate, the system is capable of snapshot imaging polarimetry in any one Stokes parameter (S1, S2, or S3). Radiometric and polarimetric calibration procedures for the instrument are provided, and the reduction matrices from the calibration are compared to rigorous coupled wave analysis and ray-tracing simulations. Image registration techniques for the sensor are discussed, and data from the instrument are presented, demonstrating the ability to measure intensity variations corresponding to polarized emission in natural environments. As such, emission polarimetry can be exploited at significantly reduced cost, sensor size, and power consumption over instruments based on more expensive mercury-cadmium telluride FPAs.

An operational radiometric calibration procedure for the Landsat sensors based on pseudo-invariant target sites

The Statewide Landcover and Trees Study (SLATS) use both Landsat-7 ETM+ and Landsat-5 TM imagery to monitor short-term woody vegetation changes throughout Queensland, Australia. In order to analyse more subtle long-term vegetation change, time-based trends resulting from artefacts introduced by the sensor system must be removed. In this study, a reflectance-based vicarious calibration approach using high-reflectance, pseudo-invariant targets in western Queensland was developed. This calibration procedure was used to test the existing calibration models for ETM+ and TM, and develop a consistent operational calibration procedure which provides calibration information for the MSS sensors. Ground based data, sensor spectral response functions and atmospheric variables were used as input to MODTRAN radiative transfer code to estimate top-of-atmosphere radiance. The estimated gains for Landsat-7 ETM+ (1999–2003), -5 TM (1987–2004), -5 MSS (1984–1993) and -2 MSS (1979–1982) are presented. Results confirm the stability and accuracy of the ETM+ calibration, and the suitability of this data as a radiometric standard for cross-calibration with TM. Vicarious data support the use of the existing TM calibration model for the red and two shortwave-infrared bands. However, alternative models for blue, green and near-infrared bands are presented. The models proposed differ most noticeably at dates prior to 1995, with differences in estimated gains of up to 9.7%, 10.8% and 6.9% for the blue, green and near-infrared bands respectively. Vicarious gains for Landsat-2 MSS and Landsat-5 MSS are presented and are compared with those applied by the on-board calibration system. Updated calibration coefficients to scale MSS data to the SLATS vicarious measurements are given. The removal of time based calibration trends in the SLATS data archive will enable the measurement of vegetation changes over the 26 year period covered by Landsat -2, -5 and -7.

Deep-space calibration of the WindSat radiometer

The WindSat microwave polarimetric radiometer consists of 22 channels of polarized brightness temperatures operating at five frequencies: 6.8, 10.7, 18.7, 23.8, and 37.0 GHz. The 10.7-, 18.7-, and 37.0-GHz channels are fully polarimetric (vertical/horizontal, /spl plusmn/45/spl deg/ and left-hand and right-hand circularly polarized) to measure the four Stokes radiometric parameters. The principal objective of this Naval Research Laboratory experiment, which flys on the USAF Coriolis satellite, is to provide the proof of concept of the first passive measurement of ocean surface wind vector from space. This paper presents details of the on-orbit absolute radiometric calibration procedure, which was performed during of a series of satellite pitch maneuvers. During these special tests, the satellite pitch was slowly ramped to +45/spl deg/ (and -45/spl deg/), which caused the WindSat conical spinning antenna to view deep space during the forward (or aft portion) of the azimuth scan. When viewing the homogeneous and isotropic brightness of space (2.73 K) through both the main reflector and the cold-load calibration reflector, it is possible to determine the absolute calibration of the individual channels and the relative calibration bias between polarimetric channels. Results demonstrate consistent and stable channel calibrations (with very small brightness biases) that exceed the mission radiometric calibration requirements.
