Beverley Hallpike, consultant nurse at Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, was presented with her Innovative and Creative Practice certificate from the Queen's Nursing Institute last month for the successful completion of a 12-month project working with dementia patients. Ms Hallpike was given £6,000 funding for her new Protected Patient Engagement Time project in which visitors are excluded from the dementia ward for three hours. During this time patients receive less rushed mealtimes together with a named nurse, aimed at eliminating the risk of malnutrition.

Learning disabilities: supporting nurses in delivering primary care.

This article introduces an educational project supported by The Queen's Nursing Institute and sponsored by the Hertfordshire Nursing Trust. It reports on the initial results from a literature review and its implications for nursing. There is broad acknowledgement of a problem in the delivery of primary care nursing for people with a learning disability, but little consensus on how to move either medical or nursing practice forward. It was proposed, therefore, to systematically assess the learning needs of nurses delivering primary care and to develop an evaluated methodology for responding to those needs. A comprehensive literature review was undertaken. Three consistent themes emerged: knowledge and training needs; role definitions and liaison; and clinical issues. Implications for nursing, and the future development of the project are considered.

Children's health: taking it seriously

The most important message to emerge from ‘In a Different Light’, the newly published report by the Queen's Nursing Institute (QNI), is that the health needs of school-age children are not being met. The nation does not have a health strategy for 5–16 year olds, they are not regular attenders at general practitioner surgeries and the School Health Service – though excellent in parts – is generally patchy and poorly integrated into the fabric of primary care.

Nurturing enterprise

The launch of the British Journal of Community Health Nursing is an important moment for the Queen's Nursing Institute. It is many years since the Institute had a journal of its own and we look forward to contributing to the development of a journal which aims to reduce the gaps between theory, reality and practice. Judging by the pre-launch enthusiasm from potential readers, we are expecting it to be a highly interactive experience between editor, readers, contributors and publisher.
