Cristobalite formed at low temperatures (below 1200°C) in contrast to cristobalite obtained by heating at higher temperatures does not give sharp volume changes when heated, as a result of which its presence in quartz ceramic, even in significant amounts, does not cause failure when subjected to thermal shock. Additional heat treatment of quartz ceramic at elevated temperatures for crystallization is undesirable since this process occurs during heating in working conditions.
