Implementation Security in Quantum Key Distribution

AbstractThe problem of implementation security in quantum key distribution (QKD) refers to the difficulty of meeting the requirements of mathematical security proofs in real‐life QKD systems. Here, a succint review is provided on this topic, focusing on discrete‐variable QKD setups. Particularly, some of their main vulnerabilities and comments are disscused on possible approaches to overcome them.

Robustness of entanglement-based discrete- and continuous-variable quantum key distribution against channel noise

Discrete-variable (DV) and continuous-variable (CV) schemes constitute the two major families of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. Unfortunately, since the setup elements required by these schemes are quite different, making a fair comparison of their potential performance in particular applications is often troublesome, limiting the experimenters’ capability to choose an optimal solution. In this work we perform a general comparison of the major entanglement-based DV and CV QKD protocols in terms of their resistance to the channel noise, with the otherwise perfect setup, showing the definite superiority of the DV family. We analytically derive fundamental bounds on the tolerable channel noise and attenuation for entanglement-based CV QKD protocols. We also investigate the influence of DV QKD setup imperfections on the obtained results in order to determine benchmarks for the parameters of realistic photon sources and detectors, allowing the realistic DV protocols to outperform even the ideal CV QKD analogs. Our results indicate the realistic advantage of DV entanglement-based schemes over their CV counterparts and suggests the practical efforts for maximizing this advantage.

Boosting Quantum Key Distribution via the End-to-End Loss Control

With the rise of quantum technologies, data security increasingly relies on quantum cryptography and its most notable application, quantum key distribution (QKD). Yet, current technological limitations, in particular, the unavailability of quantum repeaters, cause relatively low key distribution rates in practical QKD implementations. Here, we demonstrate a remarkable improvement in the QKD performance using end-to-end line tomography for the wide class of relevant protocols. Our approach is based on the real-time detection of interventions in the transmission channel, enabling an adaptive response that modifies the QKD setup and post-processing parameters, leading, thereby, to a substantial increase in the key distribution rates. Our findings provide everlastingly secure efficient quantum cryptography deployment potentially overcoming the repeaterless rate-distance limit.

High-speed integrated QKD system

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is nowadays a well-established method for generating secret keys at a distance in an information-theoretically secure way, as the secrecy of QKD relies on the laws of quantum physics and not on computational complexity. In order to industrialize QKD, low-cost, mass-manufactured, and practical QKD setups are required. Hence, photonic and electronic integration of the sender’s and receiver’s respective components is currently in the spotlight. Here we present a high-speed (2.5 GHz) integrated QKD setup featuring a transmitter chip in silicon photonics allowing for high-speed modulation and accurate state preparation, as well as a polarization-independent low-loss receiver chip in aluminum borosilicate glass fabricated by the femtosecond laser micromachining technique. Our system achieves raw bit error rates, quantum bit error rates, and secret key rates equivalent to a much more complex state-of-the-art setup based on discrete components [ Boaron A. et al. , Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 190502 (2018)].

Simulating the photon statistics of multimode Gaussian states by automatic differentiation of generating functions

Advances in photonics require photon-number resolved simulations of quantum optical experiments with Gaussian states. We demonstrate a simple and versatile method to simulate the photon statistics of general multimode Gaussian states. The derived generating functions enable simulations of the photon number distribution, cumulative probabilities, moments, and factorial moments of the photon statistics of Gaussian states as well as of multimode photon-added and photon-subtracted Gaussian states. Numerical results are obtained by the automatic differentiation of these generating functions by employing the software framework PyTorch. Our approach is particularly well suited for practical simulations of the photon statistics of quantum optical experiments in realistic scenarios with low photon numbers, in which various sources of imperfections have to be taken into account. As an example, we calculate the detection probabilities for a recent multipartite time-bin coding quantum key distribution setup and compare them with the corresponding experimental values.

Security of Decoy-State Quantum Key Distribution with Correlated Intensity Fluctuations

One of the most prominent techniques to enhance the performance of practical quantum key distribution (QKD) systems with laser sources is the decoy-state method. Current decoy-state QKD setups operate at gigahertz repetition rates, a regime where memory effects in the modulators and electronics that control them create correlations between the intensities of the emitted pulses. This translates into information leakage about the selected intensities, which cripples a crucial premise of the decoy-state method, thus invalidating the use of standard security analyzes. To overcome this problem, a security proof that exploits the Cauchy-Schwarz constraint has been introduced recently. Its main drawback is, however, that the achievable key rate is significantly lower than that of the ideal scenario without intensity correlations. Here, we improve this security proof technique by combining it with a fine-grained decoy-state analysis, which can deliver a tight estimation of the relevant parameters that determine the secret key rate. This results in a notable performance enhancement, being now the attainable distance double that of previous analyzes for certain parameter regimes. Also, we show that when the probability density function of the intensity fluctuations, conditioned on the current and previous intensity choices, is known, our approach provides a key rate very similar to the ideal scenario, which highlights the importance of an accurate experimental characterization of the correlations.

A simulator of optical coherent-state evolution in quantum key distribution systems

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is believed to represent a viable solution to achieve theoretically unconditionally secure key generation. However, the available optical systems for experimental QKD, based on photon transmission, are flawed by non-idealities that ultimately limit the achievable performance. Classical simulation of the optical hardware employed in these systems may take on a determining role in engineering future QKD networks. In this article, attempts for developing a QKD simulator based on low-computational-cost models of the employed hardware are presented. In particular, the simulation infrastructure targets polarization-based QKD setups with faint laser sources, whose behaviour can be described by semiclassical coherent states and Mean Photon Number (MPN) per beam. The effects of passive optical components on the photonic qubit evolution are described by Jones matrices, whose coefficients, for some commercial devices, are stored in an ad-hoc library. Realistic eavesdropping attacks and non-idealities, such as optical losses, fibre attenuation, polarization misalignment and limited efficiency of single-photon detectors, are also taken into account. The infrastructure allows the user to describe the desired QKD configuration and it provides in output the MPN at the receiver and two fiducial performance parameters: Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER) and secure key rate. The comparison of the simulation results with experimental data in the state-of-the-art literature highlights that this work is a step forward towards the definition of compact models for the hardware-dependent simulation of quantum-assisted communication networks.

Simulation and Application Purpose of a Randomized Secret Key with Quantum Key Distribution

Abstract The Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a well-researched secure communication method for exchanging cryptographic keys only known by the shared participants. The vulnerable problem of a secret key distribution is the negotiation and the transfer over an insecure or untrusted channel. Novel further developments of the QKD communication method are part of in-field technologies and applications in communication devices, such as satellites. However, expensive physical test setups are necessary to improve new application possibilities of cryptographic protocol involving components of quantum mechanics and quantum laws of physics. Therefore, optical simulation software can play a part in essential QKD simulating and further developing quantum-based cryptosystems. In the paper, the authors consider a feasible QKD setup based on the BB84 protocol to create a symmetric key material based on achieving a linear key rate via optical simulation software. The paper still provides two experimental architecture designs to use the QKD for a cryptosystem.

Bounding passive light-source side channels in quantum key distribution via Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

Passive side-channel attacks in quantum key distribution (QKD) aim at obtaining information about the quantum signals without disturbing them and hence compromise real-world QKD security. Currently, there are no reliable tools for the assessment of QKD signal generation imperfections. In this work we propose a generic experimental method which allows to upper-bound QKD light-source imperfections and directly integrate them into the modern security proofs. The method relies on Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between different emitted signals: the maximum interference visibility reveals overall signal distinguishability that could lead to passive side-channel information leakage. We apply it for the standard decoy-state BB84 protocol and calculate a lower bound on the secret key rate for realistic values of interference visibility. The method can be readily implemented in practical QKD setups and is especially relevant for multiple-laser QKD systems such as the one installed on the Micius satellite.

Experimental Quantum Key Distribution Secure Against Malicious Devices

The fabrication of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems typically involves several parties, thus providing Eve with multiple opportunities to meddle with the devices. As a consequence, conventional hardware and/or software hacking attacks pose natural threats to the security of practical QKD. Fortunately, if the number of corrupted devices is limited, the security can be restored by using redundant apparatuses. Here, we report on the demonstration of a secure QKD setup with optical devices and classical post-processing units possibly controlled by an eavesdropper. We implement a 1.25 GHz chip-based measurement-device-independent QKD system secure against malicious devices on \emph{both} the measurement and the users' sides. The secret key rate reaches 137 bps over a 24 dB channel loss. Our setup, benefiting from high clock rate, miniaturized transmitters and a cost-effective structure, provides a promising solution for widespread applications requiring uncompromising communication security.

Interference at the single-photon level based on silica photonics robust against channel disturbance

Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides a solution for communication of unconditional security. However, the quantum channel disturbance in the field severely increases the quantum bit-error rate, degrading the performance of a QKD system. Here we present a setup comprising silica planar light wave circuits (PLCs), which is robust against the channel polarization disturbance. Our PLCs are based on the asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometer (AMZI), integrated with a tunable power splitter and thermo-optic phase modulators. The polarization characteristics of the AMZI PLC are investigated by a novel pulse self-interfering method to determine the operation temperature of implementing polarization insensitivity. Over a 20 km fiber channel with 30 Hz polarization scrambling, our time-bin phase-encoding QKD setup is characterized with an interference fringe visibility of 98.72%. The extinction ratio for the phase states is kept between 18 and 21 dB for 6 h without active phase correction.

Software for measuring parameters of single photon detectors at a modular research quantum key distribution setup

This article considers the issue of developing software for automated measurement of single photon detectors parameters at a modular research quantum key distribution setup. Using the developed software, a technique for measuring single photon detector parameters was tested. The dependences of the parameters on the pulse repetition rate, the degree of attenuation of laser radiation, and the duration of one measurement are analyzed.

A Self-Stabilizing Phase Decoder for Quantum Key Distribution

Self-stabilization quantum key distribution (QKD) systems are often based on the Faraday magneto-optic effect such as “plug and play” QKD systems and Faraday–Michelson QKD systems. In this article, we propose a new anti-quantum-channel disturbance decoder for QKD without magneto-optic devices, which can be a benefit for the photonic integration and applications in magnetic environments. The decoder is based on a quarter-wave plate reflector–Michelson (Q–M) interferometer, with which the QKD system can be free of polarization disturbance caused by quantum channel and optical devices in the system. The theoretical analysis indicates that the Q–M interferometer is immune to polarization-induced signal fading, where the operator of the Q–M interferometer corresponding to Pauli Matrix σ2 makes it satisfy the anti-disturbance condition naturally. A Q–M interferometer based time-bin phase encoding QKD setup is demonstrated, and the experimental results show that the QKD setup works stably with a low quantum bit error rate about 1.3% for 10 h over 60.6 km standard telecommunication optical fiber.

Improvement of the safe transmission distance via optimization of the photon number distribution for the faint optical pulse in practical quantum key distribution systems

With practical quantum key distribution (QKD) systems, estimating the safe transmission distance and the safe bit rate under some transmission distance is quite important. For the practical QKD setup, with decoy states, the photon count distribution of the faint laser pulse with signal states can be optimized to acquire the maximum transmission distance. With this goal, we implement a method combining mathematical derivation and numerical simulation to find the optimal photon count distribution under realistic conditions; the numerical simulation results show that the new distributions can be employed in the decoy QKD system to reach safe transmission distances farther than those reached by systems with the Poisson distribution.

Multi-matrix error estimation and reconciliation for quantum key distribution.

Post-processing is a significant step in quantum key distribution (QKD), which is used for correcting the quantum-channel noise errors and distilling identical corrected keys between two distant legitimate parties. Efficient error reconciliation protocol, which can lead to an increase in the secure key generation rate, is one of the main performance indicators of QKD setups. In this paper, we propose a multi-low-density parity-check codes based reconciliation scheme, which can provide remarkable perspectives for highly efficient information reconciliation. By testing our approach through data simulation, we show that the proposed scheme combining multi-syndrome-based error rate estimation allows for a more accurate estimation of the error rate as compared with random sampling and single-syndrome estimation techniques before the error correction, as well as a significant increase in the efficiency of the procedure without compromising security and sacrificing reconciliation efficiency.

Modular Quantum Key Distribution Setup for Research and Development Applications

Quantum key distribution (QKD), ensuring the unconditional security of information, attracts a significant deal of interest. An important task is to design QKD systems as a platform for education as well as for research and development applications and fast prototyping new QKD protocols. Here we present a modular QKD setup driven by National Instruments (NI) cards with open source LabView code, open source Python code for post-processing procedures, and open source protocol for external applications. An important feature of the developed apparatus is its flexibility offering possibilities to modify optical schemes and verify novel QKD protocols. Another distinctive feature of the developed setup is the implementation of the decoy-state protocol, which is a standard tool for secure long-distance quantum communications. By testing the plug-and-play scheme realizing BB84 and decoy-state BB84 QKD protocols, we demonstrate that developed QKD setup shows a high degree of robustness beyond laboratory conditions. We demonstrate the results of the use of the developed modular setup for urban QKD experiments.

Error Estimation at the Information Reconciliation Stage of Quantum Key Distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) offers a practical solution for secure communication between two distinct parties via a quantum channel and an authentic public channel. In this work, we consider different approaches to the quantum bit error rate (QBER) estimation at the information reconciliation stage of the post-processing procedure. For reconciliation schemes employing low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, we develop a novel syndrome-based QBER estimation algorithm. The algorithm suggested is suitable for irregular LDPC codes and takes into account punctured and shortened bits. Testing our approach in a real QKD setup, we show that an approach combining the proposed algorithm with conventional QBER estimation techniques allows one to improve the accuracy of the QBER estimation.

Simple 2.5 GHz time-bin quantum key distribution

We present a 2.5 GHz quantum key distribution setup with the emphasis on a simple experimental realization. It features a three-state time-bin protocol based on a pulsed diode laser and a single intensity modulator. Implementing an efficient one-decoy scheme and finite-key analysis, we achieve record breaking secret key rates of 1.5 kbps over 200 km of standard optical fibers.

Performances Analysis of An Intrinsic Random Quantum Key Distribution Scheme with Imperfect Optical Devices

Within an imperfect devices scenario, we focus on investigating the performances of an intrinsic random quantum key distribution scheme. We first derived the formula of the security bound for this scheme when a parametric down-conversion source and threshold detectors in lossy channels are employed, and then, the simulation result is presented by employing practical parameters that are deduced from two well-known experiments. The result we obtained is interesting for adjusting and optimizing performances of the real quantum key distribution setups as the devices-model and the corresponding parameters are practicable with todays’ state-of-the-art.

Random bit generation using coherent state and threshold detectors at 1550 nanometers.

We theoretically propose and experimentally validate a practical random bit generation method based on the detections of a coherent state in the few-photon regime by a gated single-photon threshold detector, operating at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nanometers. By fine tuning the mean number of photons per pulse of a laser beam directed to the single-photon detector, a 50-50 chance of detection or no-detection is reached; under this condition, detections inside the gate window are treated as "1"s, while "0"s are associated with the absence of detections. The same method could also be applied in a free-running single-photon detector for increased throughput by chopping the light signal instead of gating the detector. Both hardware implementations yielded bit strings, which were evaluated by a standard randomness test suite with good confidence. Despite the yet low rates achieved by the proposed method, its hardware compatibility with quantum key distribution setups makes it an interesting candidate for random number generation within the context of practical quantum communications.
